Upon its release, Chloé Zhao’s Eternals made history by becoming the first Marvel Cinematic Universe film to have received a Rotten score on Rotten Tomatoes. Currently, the film sits at a meager rating of 47%. However, having given a 77% score, the audience clearly does not agree with the critics and believes that the film was not really as bad as they are saying. Many fans would agree that while Eternals was not one of the MCU’s greatest works, it still was an entertaining one-time watch, at least.
Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Eternals (2021)
Eternals explored many impressive themes including faith and loyalty and the characters somehow managed to make a tiny place in the viewers’ hearts. Richard Madden’s Ikaris was a fan-favorite character who suffered the dilemma of either fulfilling his purpose or staying loyal to his family. In the end, Ikaris chose to sacrifice his life. The Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid series in the works at Amazon has found its showrunners.
Variety has learned that Alex Metcalf has boarded the show, currently titled “Butch & Sundance,” as showrunner and executive producer. Series creators Kaz Firpo and Ryan Firpo will serve as co-showrunners and executive producers alongside Metcalf. The Firpos most recently wrote the screenplay for the Marvel film “Eternals.” Amazon has ordered the show straight-to-series.
The show was first reported as being in development in September, with Regé-Jean Page attached to play Cassidy and Glen Powell playing Sundance. At that time, it was reported that deals for the show were not yet closed and discussions were ongoing.
Plot details from the show are now official, with the logline stating, “In an alternate version of America, legendary outlaws Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid take on their biggest heist yet — this time with the fate of...

It’s over! It’s officially over. Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is finally in our rear view mirror, and what did we learn? We learned that Marvel Studios wasn’t going to stop taking risks after capping off Phase 3 with the box office juggernaut of Avengers: Endgame. In fact, they were going to take more risks than ever. Sometimes, those risks paid off. Other times, they did not. But during a transformative time for the MCU, Phase 4 was, for the most part, determined not to offer the one thing that would have made older fans happy but would have perhaps discouraged newer, younger fans from emerging: more of the same.
As such, the MCU got a whole slate of brand-new and diverse characters. Moon Knight, the Eternals, Ms. Marvel, Shang-Chi, She-Hulk, Kate Bishop, Yelena Belova, John Walker, Ironheart, Agatha, Red Guardian, Clea, Echo,...

Kumail Nanjiani is talking about the potential sequel to Eternals, the Marvel film directed by Oscar winner Chloé Zhao.
During an appearance in a podcast, Nanjiani was asked about the superhero movie after his co-star Patton Oswalt hinted that a sequel was in the works.
“I have no idea,” Nanjiani said on the Bingeworthy podcast by The Playlist. “I don’t think Patton was right. I think that there was a hoax website – one of those where it’s like one letter off from the real one. They tweeted it, and it spread around and I think that’s what Patton saw. I honestly don’t know anything. I would love for Kingo to come back. I love playing that character. That one’s very fun to play, you’re just in a good mood. You do finger guns, you’re like a movie star – what’s not to love?...

This feature contains spoilers for Marvel’s Eternals.
Eternals is now streaming on Disney+, and many people who missed seeing it on the big screen are finally getting a chance to check out what they might have heard is a rare misstep from Marvel Studios in the comfort of their own home. Meanwhile, others are wondering if Eternals is worth revisiting at all after struggling with it the first time.
I fall into a different category. I found Eternals pretty enjoyable and a welcome departure from your standard MCU installment, but was looking forward to seeing it again because I had a feeling that some of the film’s problems might be reduced after I’d had time to sit with its secrets, and I did indeed find that to be the case. Mostly.
There are things that still feel lackluster about Eternals and that probably won’t age as...

Those hoping to see a major character in "Eternals" return after his somewhat ambiguous death are going to be disappointed, according to screenwriter Kaz Firpo. Needless to say, there are some huge spoilers ahead.
For a long time, but especially since the whole "Death of Superman" thing that happened in the '90s, death has been basically meaningless in comic books. That's what happens when you have a whole magical multiverse full of convenient ways to bring characters back from the dead. But so far the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been surprisingly good about keeping dead characters in...

Sorry Marvel bros, Harry Styles was part of the "Eternals" game from day one. In fact, according to Ryan and Kaz Firpo — who wrote the script alongside director Chloé Zhao and co-writer Patrick Burleigh — Styles' Starfox was originally considered as a main player in the film, not just the post-credits scene.

The two big "Eternals" credits scene cameos might have surprised fans, but they weren't all that shocking to screenwriters Ryan Firpo and Kaz Firpo, who had planned on including at least one of them since the very beginning. In an interview with /Film's Jacob Hall (full interview coming later), the screenwriting duo shared the history behind those mid-and-post credits sequences, and revealed that they came up with nearly a "half dozen" possible credits sequences before narrowing them down to the final two.

When an ostensibly crowd-pleasing superhero movie ends up with as much of a mixed reaction as "Eternals" did, there are bound to be several very specific elements that can be singled out as divisive. Although the narrative to this point has largely focused on how Chloé Zhao's singular vision proved to be at fundamental odds with the more conventional approach that Marvel Studios prefers to run things, the truth would seem to be that the film was a very smooth collaboration between Zhao and the other credited writers on the screenplay -- Patrick Burleigh, Ryan Firpo, and Kaz Firpo.

Oscar-winner Chloé Zhao directs the latest Marvel superhero adventure, Eternals, which attempts to make a few subtle-but-important shifts in the MCU. As such, it’s largely successful, though the standard Marvel formula is nigh-on indomitable and remains firmly in place.
Based on characters and concepts created by Jack Kirby in 1974, Eternals posits that alien beings called Celestials created a race of immortal, super-powered humanoids called Eternals and sent them to Earth 7,000 years ago, in order to protect humanity from invading alien monsters known as Deviants. The Eternals extinguished the last of the Deviants some 500 years ago, so it’s understandably concerning when one of them attacks Sersi (Gemma Chan) in present-day London.

[Editor’s note: The following post contains spoilers for both “Eternals” and its post-credits scenes.]
The Marvel Cinematic Universe has never shied away from tossing major narrative bombs into its films after they’ve — quite literally — ended, but Chloé Zhao’s “Eternals” offers a few more twists to the formula. Not only does the Oscar winner’s first Marvel feature conclude with plenty of table-setting for more action to come, it does that within both the film’s primary running time (kinda new!) and in a pair of post-credits scenes (the usual land of all those late-breaking twists).
Zhao’s eons-spanning epic introduces the titular Eternals — essentially, a race of immortal beings who have been (secretly) hanging out on Earth for thousands of years — and sees what happens when their apparent dedication to the safety of Earth’s inhabitants is threatened by a wide variety of forces. That’s the short version, but suffice it to say, it ends with...

Chicago – At some point, everything evolves. This isn’t something that’s exclusive to Pokemon, but a process that all of us have undergone to get to where we are. Following the first two films of Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe – Black Widow and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings – earlier this year, the MCU, having apparently exhausted the current universe of heroes, now embarks – with Eternals – on telling the tale of a new team of heroes who are, in actuality, ancient aliens that have been coexisting with humans for thousands of years subtly guiding and protecting the planet and it inhabitants from those that may cause it harm. Now, the old foes of the Eternals, the Deviants, have surfaced again in an attempt to gain control of the world, forcing the Eternals themselves to emerge from hiding to battle their fiercest enemy.

Spoiler Warning: This article discusses brief references in Marvel Studios’ “Eternals” that, while in no way related to the plot of the film that opens on Nov. 5, could be considered spoilers.
A throwaway pop-culture reference in a Marvel Studios movie is usually as common as a form-fitting unitard. But when Disney released a featurette last week for Chloé Zhao’s “Eternals,” in which a child refers to the Eternal named Ikaris (Richard Madden) as “Superman,” the moment was enough to launch dozens of deep-dive reaction videos and head–spinning tweets wondering “What does this all mean?!”
In the scene in question, Ikaris and Sersi (Gemma Chan) are at the home of Phastos (Brian Tyree Henry), a fellow Eternal who has started a family with his human husband, Ben (Haaz Sleiman), and their child, Jack (Esai Daniel Cross), who saw Ikaris fighting an evil Deviant on TV.

He knew there were more planets to rule, more parallel dimensions to explore, and more revenue streams for Disney shareholders to tap dry.
Most of all, Feige knew that it wasn’t enough to dominate the creative arts; if the Marvel brand were to achieve its rightful place in the hearts and minds of all humanity, it would have to unseat the Creator themselves. A major step towards achieving a kind of singularity between the Marvel Cinematic Universe (lucrative and popular) and the Actual Physical Universe (prestigious but full of fading stars), “Eternals” starts by...

It’s not every day that a Latina woman in her 50s stars in a Marvel movie. It’s something that director Chloé Zhao was very aware of when she cast 54-year-old Salma Hayek to play Ajak in the upcoming “Eternals.”
“Ageism in Hollywood is a very concerning issue that we must stand against as artists,” Zhao tells Variety. “Aging is a beautiful part of life that should be celebrated. It’s really an honor for us to have Salma to lead the ‘Eternals’ family. I can’t take all the credits. When [executive producer] Nate Moore first showed me the treatment, which he worked on with [writers] Kaz Firpo and Ryan Firpo, I was impressed with the age diversity of the characters they put together, and it was a big part of what got me really excited about ‘Eternals.’”
While audiences have only seen a glimpse of Hayek in character, she says...

Chloé Zhao picked up four Oscar nominations for “Nomadland” this year as its producer, director, writer, and editor, winning the categories of Best Picture and Best Director. Zhao has been a credited editor on two of her films, “Songs My Brother Taught Me” and “Nomadland,” receiving sole editor credit on her recent Oscar winner. The director confirmed to Variety following the 93rd Academy Awards that for “Eternals,” her upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe tentpole and major studio filmmaking debut, she is not the editor. That credit is being shared by Dylan Tichenor and Craig Wood.
“No. I’m working with two incredible editors, Wood and Tichenor,” Zhao said when asked if she’s editing “Eternals” in addition to directing and co-writing the film. “And they’ve taught me so much. They were very patient with me, because they know it’s the first time that I’ve collaborated with editors that way.

After making one of the most acclaimed films of the year with “The Rider[/link],” Chloé Zhao[/link] is set to take on a considerably larger project: Marvel[/link]’s “The Eternals[/link].” She’ll become just the second woman to helm a film for the studio, as next year’s “Captain Marvel[/link]” is co-directed by Anna Boden[/link]; the first 20 movies, from “Iron Man[/link]” and “Avengers: Infinity War[/link]” to “Guardians of the Galaxy[/link]” and “Thor: Ragnarok[/link],” all come from male directors.
“The Eternals” leans toward the stranger end of the Marvel spectrum, taking place millions of years in the past and concerning cosmic beings called Celestials whose experiments on humans result in both heroes and villains with supernatural abilities. It’s a far cry from the subject of Zhao’s breakout film, which premiered at Sundance last year and was nominated for four Independent Spirit Awards (including Best Feature and Best Director). One imagines...

Under Executive director Roger Durling, the Santa Barbara International Film Festival has flourished by riding the awards season wave via starry onstage interviews with Oscar contenders.
Every year, screenwriters, directors and producers promote their causes on panels, and the likes of Jeff Bridges (a local), Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling, Denzel Washington, and Casey Affleck and Michelle Williams submit to in-depth tributes from Leonard Maltin and Pete Hammond, among others. This year I had the pleasure of a wide-ranging conversation with Best Actress Oscar-nominee Isabelle Huppert. (See video excerpts below.)
And Saturday, the festival wound up its 32nd edition by handing out its annual jury prizes. All eleven are listed below.
The Audience Choice Award went to Yonatan Nir’s “My Hero Brother,” which also took home the Best Documentary Award. It tells the story of a group of young people with Down syndrome who embarking on an arduous trek through the Himalayas.
