The term “alien” takes on multiple meanings in writer-director Moin Hussain’s intriguing and rather gloomy debut feature, Sky Peals, which follows a lonely rest-stop cook whose life is upended by the death of his estranged father. Although extraterrestrials are evoked at some point, this intimate indie is less of a sci-fi thriller than a minimalist character study, focusing on a multiracial protagonist who doesn’t seem to be at home anywhere.
Screening in Venice’s International Critics’ Week sidebar, the film marks a promising first feature for Hussain, who shows a steady command of tone in a story that’s basically set in one colorless, extremely alienating place. But it can also be too much of a one-note affair at times, lacking the dramatic energy to take it to wider audiences.

Netflix and Sky have revealed the six screenwriters selected for the inaugural, year-long Bisha K. Ali screenwriting talent program.

Applicants were required to submit a full script and, as part of the program, will be assigned a mentor as well as getting to have one-on-one chats with industry heavyweights including Charlie Brooker, Charlie Covell, Kate Herron, Chandni Lakhani and Laurie Nunn.

Cornerstone Films announced this week that multi-talented writer, director, and actor Paddy Considine has found his next filmmaking gig, the boxing drama “Journeyman.” Considine directed the excellent and underrated BAFTA-Award winning “Tyrannosaur,” and his second feature continues his collaboration with producing partner Diarmid Scrimshaw of Inflammable Films. Currently in pre-production and shooting in early March, Considine wrote the screenplay, will direct it and will also star. Jodie Whittaker (“One Day”), Faraz Ayub (“Honor”), Tony Pitts (“War Horse”) and Paul Popplewell (“’71”) will form the main members of the supporting cast. Here’s the official synopsis: Journeyman is a powerful and beautiful story about loss and, ultimately, triumph. Coming off her well-deserved Oscar nomination for 45 Years, Charlotte Rampling has found a new project. Screen Daily reports that she’ll be leading an adaptation of Jane Austen‘s Sanditon, the first time it will come to the screen. Directed by Jim O’Hanlon and scripted by Simon Reade, it follows a summer at a sea bathing resort in which society can be seen at play. Production is set to kick off this summer for a likely 2017.
We’ve been patiently waiting for Paddy Considine (Hot Fuzz, Macbeth) to follow up his impressive directorial debut Tyrannosaur with another feature and now it looks like he’s finally settled on one. THR reports he’ll direct and write Journeyman, a boxing drama starring himself as a world middleweight boxing champion who takes on one last fight and succumbs to a coma, but is then awakened and must deal with the repercussions.

Mona (Aiysha Hart) arrives home late, suitcase in hand, and it’s clear in the way she sneaks in that she’s hiding something. Her mother (Harvey Virdi) welcomes her, but the older woman’s chilly demeanor barely conceals her disapproval of her daughter’s late-night gallivanting. Mona’s older brother, Kasim (Faraz Ayub), shows up, and the three eat dinner and relax in front of the television. Except none of them are even the slightest bit relaxed. Mona’s furtive glances at a knife in the kitchen and Kasim’s equally covert looks to mother add to a growing tension between them all. It’s broken as Kasim suddenly begins to strangle his sister while their mother holds Mona’s legs. The young woman struggles and writhes to no avail, attempting and failing to reach the knife she had secured in her back pocket, and before long her movements cease and she crumples, dead...

The statistics for honour killings in the UK makes for a disquieting read. The idea that so many people are murdered for bringing shame upon their family or community, most of which are women, and predominantly for cultural and religious reasons, is inconceivable. It’s therefore somewhat refreshing to see a filmmaker, in this instance Shan Khan, approach such intriguing, yet mostly untouched cinematic territory. However, this particular endeavour loses its way somewhat, and the more delusory it becomes, the further away from reality we find ourselves.
The victim, in this instance, is the young Mona (Aiysha Hart), who is targeted by her mother (Harvey Virdi) and two brothers, Kasim (Faraz Ayub) and Adel (Shubham Saraf), when they learn of her intentions to run away with her boyfriend Tanvir (Nikesh Patel). A grim reflection of contemporary Britain and the so-called 'honour killings' that take place within certain communities, Shan Khan's directorial debut is a gritty thriller that doesn't know whether it wants to educate or entertain. The film's relatively engaging nature is largely reliant on the authenticity and tenacity of the performances from its impressive leads Aiysha Hart, Paddy Considine and Faraz Ayub.
Honour explores the repugnant repercussions of Mona (Hart) angering her Muslim family by embarking on an affair with a Punjabi man (Nikesh Patel). Mona's policeman brother Kasim (Ayub) and mother (Harvey Virdi) want her dead for supposedly dishonouring their family and hire an unnamed racist bounty hunter (Considine) to track her down on the streets of London.
