After Writers Guild of America waged a protest regarding the Television Academy‘s decision to move the outstanding writing for a variety series or special categories out of the upcoming Emmy telecast, the TV Academy has reversed course.
In a joint release sent out today, the Television Academy, Fox and the WGA said they were “happy to announce they have reached an agreement to include the Writing for a Variety Series category in the 75th Emmy Awards telecast airing live on Fox on January 15, 2024, at 8pm Est / 5pm Pst.”
Because this year’s Primetime Emmys has moved the variety special (live) category into the telecast (it was on the Creative Arts show last year), the TV Academy was likely looking to keep the telecast capped at 25 awards, so something had to fall out. And in this case, it was the variety writing field that originally got pushed to the Creative Arts ceremony.

Nate Bargatze was an unconventional choice to host the Halloween 2023 episode of “Saturday Night Live.” But hey, the actors were still on strike, the talented comic’s standup career is taking off, and somebody had to don the George Washington wig.
The result was “Washington’s Dream,” written by SNL co-head writer Streeter Seidell and Mikey Day with an assist from Auguste White, and starring Bargatze as Washington and Day, James Austin Johnson, Bowen Yang, and Kenan Thompson as his dejected Revolutionary War soldiers. Thompson had an especially good reason to be pessimistic about America’s future.
The setting: an American army camp. The year: 1777. Bargatze-as-Washington reminds his tired troops what they’re fighting for: the right to determine their new country’s own “system of weights and measures” — one that’s independent from the British Monarchy with the added benefit of being far more random and confusing. First time host Aubrey Plaza returned to her NBC Page roots giving a backstage tour of the show, with a surprise cameo from former “SNL” cast member and “Parks and Recreation” star Amy Poehler and President Joe Biden.
“Wow, it is great to be here hosting ‘Saturday Night Live.’ This is a dream come true and yes I mean that,” she said.
“People think I’m weird because of the characters that I play,” she said. “My real family is here including my Grandma Margie. They all came up here from Delaware. I was voted most famous person from Delaware, I beat Joe Biden.”
“That’s a fact and he was pissed, he was livid,” she said.
The President then appeared, saying, “Aubrey, you’re the most famous person out of Deleware and there’s no question about that. We’re just grateful you made it out of ‘White Lotus’ alive.

“Saturday Night Live’s” final show of the season started on a sweet note, as host Austin Butler tenderly recalled watching the late-night comedy show with his late mother, Lori Anne Howell.
“I love my mom, some of my favorite memories from growing up was watching ‘SNL’ every week,” and even though he had this “crippling shyness,” he would do anything to make her laugh — including an imitation of Gollum from “Lord of the Rings.”
Being silly with her, he said, is “what broke me out of my shell” and inspired his drive to be an actor. Butler, who got his start as a child actor on both Nickelodeon and Disney Channel shows, played Elvis Presley in Baz Luhrmann’s hit biopic, “Elvis.”
“Now, my mother is no longer with us, but I have been thinking about her a lot this week, just imagining of how proud she would be...

“Saturday Night Live” was in a festive mood this weekend, as “Only Murders in the Building” co-stars Steve Martin and Martin Short opened the show with a hilarious monologue reading eulogies for each other — ending with a cameo appearance by their “Murders” co-star Selena Gomez.
Martin started the fake eulogy first, reading: “Wow, not much of a turnout. Marty did not want to be cremated. Too late.” Short’s last words, he said, were “Tesla auto pilot, engage.”
Short shot back, “Oh, Steve, you bland overrated son a bitch where did you go?.. Seeing you in that casket reminds me of that classic SNL sketch, ‘Dick in a Box.'”
While Martin pondered who he would work with after Short has passed, Gomez yelled from off-stage, “what about me?” before emerging to applause.
Among other jokes, the duo compared themselves to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle with Short saying, just like those two,...

“Saturday Night Live” returned after the holiday break with host Keke Palmer making a big announcement: She is having a baby!
“People have been in my comments, saying, ‘Keke’s having a baby,’ ‘Keke’s pregnant,’ and I want to set the record straight,” Palmer said in her opening monologue. “I am!”
Palmer revealed the huge news by unveiling her baby bump during her animated and hysterical monologue talking about her big year starring in “Nope” and being nominated for an Academy Award –which she joked didn’t actually happen.
“I was trying so hard to keep it on the down-low ’cause I got a lot of stuff going on,” she said. “You know, people kept coming up to me, ‘Congratulations,’ and I’m like, ‘Shh, can y’all stop? I got a liquor sponsorship on the line.”
All joking aside, Palmer couldn’t contain her excitement.

“Saturday Night Live”‘s cold open focused on the national drama surrounding hard-fought elections in Georgia, Pennsylvania and Arizona in the opening sketch of Season 48’s fourth episode.
Portraying Dr. Mehmet Oz, cast member Mikey Day, donned a Phillies hat and awkwardly spoke of having a delicious “Philadelphia Cheese and Steak.” Day, as Oz, referred to his Democratic rival John Fetterman’s stroke, or a “Debilitating condition,” as a lucky break before taking a moment to push diet pills guaranteed to help dieters lose 30 pounds in a day.
Portraying Kari Lake, Republican gubernatorial candidate in Arizona, Cecily Strong thanked Heidi Gardner, portraying “PBS News Hour” anchor Judy Woodruff, for welcoming her onto her “sweet little show full of lies.”
Pressed about denying the 2020 election results, Lake deflects the centerpiece of her campaign, explaining why she appeals to voters.

Jack Harlow will serve as the host and musical guest on the next episode of “Saturday Night Live,” set to air on Oct. 29. “SNL” announced the booking on this week’s episode, which also features another music star as both host and musical guest: Megan Thee Stallion.
This marks the first time Harlow has hosted “SNL,” and his second time as musical performer. He made his “Saturday Night Live” debut as musical guest on March 27, 2021, alongside host Maya Rudolph.
Harlow released his major label debut “That’s What They All Say” in 2020, and followed that up with this year’s “Come Home the Kids Miss You.” In 2021, he was named Variety’s hitmaker of the year. Harlow was just named songwriter of the year at the Sesac Music Awards.
“Saturday Night Live” returned for its Season 48 on Oct. 1, with Miles Teller making his debut as host for the first time.

“Saturday Night Live” opened its third episode of the season by taking on the Jan. 6 committee hearings, starring Kenan Thompson as United States Representative Bennie G. Thompson (D-ms). And the theme of the sketch was quite simple: No matter how bad the attempts to stage a coup and overthrow the nation were, there’s no accountability in this country… and nothing will ultimately come of it. Donald Trump will roam free, there’s little chance he’ll actually live up to the subpoena to appear in front of the committee, and there’s nothing they can do about it.
Liz Cheney, played by Heidi Gardner, noted that “Over the past few months, this bipartisan committee has presented our case to all Americans. Whether you’re a Republican who’s not watching or a Democrat who’s nodding so hard that your head is falling off, one person is responsible for this insurrection: Donald Trump.

“Saturday Night Live” lampooned the seemingly endless barrage of bad headlines in in the opening sketch of Season 48’s second episode.
Bowen Yang starred in the opener as a game show host for “So You Think You Won’t Snap,” a program which features contestants being read real-life headlines in an attempt to make them snap, whether that means breaking a glass or punching an assistant. Also in the sketch was Heidi Gardner as a yoga teacher who is forced to watch a video of President Joe Biden talking about his mental state on CNN; Chloe Fineman as a an apolitical mom outraged by Chris Pratt’s voice acting in the “Super Mario Bros” movie; Kenan Thompson as a contestant who loses it at the very mention of Elon Musk; and Devon Walker as a contestant who is confronted by a barrage of negative news involving Kanye West. Watch the sketch below.

When Zoe Kravitz calls out “SNL” for its “boy energy” in the new “Saturday Night Live” promo (watch above), we have a feeling she’s only half joking. Indeed, the star of “The Batman” is only the fourth female host so far of Season 47, following Kim Kardashian West, Billie Eilish and Ariana DeBose. Men have hosted all of the other 11 episodes. Kravitz appears on the March 12 installment of NBC’s sketch comedy series with musical guest Rosalia.

With the introduction of Disney+ and therefore the need for new shows and movies it is no surprise at all that the most well known of Christmas movies got a sequel on the streaming platform. The original Home Alone (and that first sequel) is one of my favourite movies ever and any modern day sequel was going to have a tough time being anywhere near as good as the first two films. That said, with a talented cast, I was looking forward to seeing how Home Sweet Home Alone turned out.
Apart from a child being left home alone, the story is changed up a little bit. This time, the crooks aren’t really crooks but a married couple...

The latest entry into the beloved “Home Alone” franchise hails from a stacked roster of comedy veterans.
“Borat” and “Bridget Jones’ Baby” co-writer Dan Mazer directs the film from a screenplay by Mikey Day and Streeter Seidell of “Saturday Night Live” (and of Variety’s list of 10 Screenwriters to Watch in 2021). The cast includes Ellie Kemper, Rob Delaney and Kenan Thompson. But in “Home Sweet Home Alone,” those comedians and their decades of experience stand in service of something greater.
That is, of course, the budding stardom of Archie Yates, the 12-year-old from Kent, England who made his film debut in 2019 via Taika Waititi’s “Jojo Rabbit.” He stole the screen as Jojo’s [Roman Griffin Davis] goofy and blunt best friend Yorki, then did it again during the film’s awards campaign, winning hearts and going viral online for his red carpet appearances.

Over the course of more than 30 years and five films, the “Home Alone” franchise has mostly failed to recapture the magic and charm of Chris Columbus’ 1990 original, and the latest entry into this seemingly bomb-proof franchise — the awkwardly titled “Home Sweet Home Alone” — continues that pattern, even with plenty of good intentions. Dan Mazer’s film is the closest yet the series has come to a true remake, focusing on one plucky kid, two crazed robbers, and a Christmastime backdrop engineered to make anyone feel warm and fuzzy, but
Most of that weirdness is baked right into the film’s basic premise, which dares to ask: What if our plucky kid was kind of a jerk? And what if our crazed robbers actually had a good reason for committing crimes? And what if this family-friendly comedy included jokes about O.J. Simpson’s checkered past? What follows is an uneven mishmash,...

It seems particularly cruel that the first thing we see in Home Sweet Home Alone is the 20th Century Fox fanfare—and yes, it is still the Fox fanfare when the floodlights come on and the brass section plays, no matter the text on the screen. That fallen movie studio was of course no collection of saints when it came to milking popular IPs. They even made that horrible Home Alone 3 back in ’97 you forgot existed. But Home Sweet Home Alone? The belated and opportunistic “legacy sequel” which attempts to manipulate your childhood nostalgia into crass dollar signs? That’s a modern Disney maneuver through and through.
The unique bit of ugliness about Home Sweet Home Alone’s cynicism, however, is that it’s not even nostalgia done particularly well. Disney rolls out the red carpet when they’re mining their own vaults for animated classics to remake, or...

Variety has released this year’s list of 10 Screenwriters to Watch. A conversation with the honorees will take place on Oct. 17 at the Mill Valley Film Festival. The magazine will also honor Italian helmer-scribe Paolo Sorrentino (“Hand of God”) with the Creative Impact in Screenwriting Award.
The annual 10 to Watch program celebrates breakthrough screenwriters, actors, directors, comics, animators, producers and cinematographers. Some of the screenwriters are being honored for films that have already premiered and received critical acclaim, like “King Richard,” while others, like “Tick, Tick … Boom!,” remain highly anticipated. At least half of the selected films had their production schedules or release dates altered by the pandemic.

So when a married couple attempting to retrieve a priceless heirloom sets their sights on the Mercer family’s home, it is up to Max to protect it from the trespassers, and he will do whatever it takes to keep them out. The Amber Ruffin Show and A Black Lady Sketch Show have both secured Emmy writing noms for the first time – noticeably helping to improve the diversity of the category.
The Peacock series and the HBO show will compete in Outstanding Writing For A Variety Series against HBO’s Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, CBS’ The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and NBC’s SNL.
A somewhat curious note of this category is that Ashley Nicole Black will compete against herself, having been involved in writing on both The Amber Ruffin Show and A Black Lady Sketch Show.
It marks The Amber Ruffin Show’s first Emmy nomination since the weekly show launched last year. However, it is not Ruffin herself’s first nom, having been nominated in this category for her work, alongside her head writer Jenny Hagel, on Late Night with Seth Meyers.

“SNL” has become a perennial favorite in the songwriting category. Archie Yates, Ellie Kemper and Rob Delaney will star in Disney Plus’ “Home Alone” reboot.
Dan Mazer is on board to direct the film from a script by Mikey Day and Streeter Seidell.
Sources say Yates will not be playing the iconic Kevin McCallister, but a new character in a similar premise to the original franchise. In the original 1990 film, Kevin, played by Macaulay Culkin, is accidentally left behind while his family heads to Paris over the holidays. During that time, he must protect his house from a pair of burglars, portrayed by Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern.
Though originally thought to be Yates’ parents, sources now say Kemper and Delaney will be playing someone else in the film, possibly another couple not related to Yates.
The first movie was a major hit, grossing $476.7 million worldwide, including $285.8 million domestically, leading to the 1992 sequel “Home Alone 2: Lost in New York,...

We’ve got another classic character coming to the big screen with a new Inspector Gadget movie. The film is being made by Disney and will be written by SNL star and writer Mikey Day and SNL writer Streeter Seidell, who are also penning the script for the upcoming Home Alone remake.
Inspector Gadget was a favorite cartoon series of mine in the ‘80s. It went on to have another series and two films, but nothing really lived up to the original cartoon in my opinion. Maybe just because I was a little too old for the franchise by that point. But I think with the right writing it could really be a fun movie that my kids will love.
The series followed a bumbling detective with a penchant for inventions built inside his coat… that don’t always go according to plan. He is often assisted by his niece Penny,...

According to the report, the Home Alone reimagining will follow a “husband and wife who go to war with a young boy, Max”, who has stolen something from them. Max is described as an “energetic, witty nine-year-old boy with a mischievous side. He feels wise beyond his years and has the personality to easily converse with adults—plus the uncanny ability to relentlessly push their buttons. But, he also displays a sense of innocence and a kind heart much like the original protagonist.”

Home Alone, a piece of property cheese nabbed by the monolithic Mouse in the company’s recent acquisition of Fox, happens to be on the docket for a Disney+ reboot treatment, joining similarly-fated properties in Night at The Museum and Diary of a Wimpy Kid; a reveal made by big boss Bob Iger at a Q3 earnings call back in August,...

Time will tell if The David S. Pumpkins Halloween Special will join the ranks of other hallowed Halloween specials like It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown, but you can get an idea of what to expect in the first clip from the NBC special, in which two kids unsuspectingly summon David S. Pumpkins (voiced by Tom Hanks) with a magic pumpkin (that is reminiscent of Charlie Brown's Christmas tree).
The David S. Pumpkins Halloween Special airs on Saturday, October 28th at 11:30pm Et (the SNL time slot) on NBC. Hanks will be joined in the voice cast by Peter Dinklage, Streeter Seidell, Mikey Day, and Bobby Moynihan (the lattermost two played Pumpkins' dancing skeleton sidekicks in the "Haunted Elevator" sketch).
You can view the new clip below, and in case you missed it, check out the recent promo video for the animated special. Stay tuned to Daily Dead for...

"Any questions?!" Since he first appeared in the "Haunted Elevator" sketch on Saturday Night Live last fall, viewers have indeed had many questions about the bizarre and endearing Tom Hanks character (such as, what does the "S" stand for?). Perhaps some of those questions will be answered (or perhaps not, you can never tell with this character) on NBC's The David S. Pumpkins Halloween Special. The half-hour animated show airs this Saturday night, but you can enter the house of David S. Pumpkins right now in a new promo video featuring that familiar funky music.

Tom Hanks’ David S. Pumpkins “SNL” character returns this weekend for a new family-friendly animated Halloween special — any questions? TheWrap had plenty for writers Mikey Day and Streeter Seidell. For starters, how much dialogue will the bizarre star of “Saturday Night Live’s” “Haunted Elevator” sketch have in his half-hour cartoon version? After all, the jack-o-lantern-suited freak really only said a few things in the original 2016 All Hallows’ Eve skit — and even those lines were mostly just Pumpkins speaking his own name. “We had a rule that he could never speak more than three lines consecutively because he’s kind.

Here at Et, we’re obsessed with a lot of things -- and this is what we’re most excited about as we gear up for Halloween:
Why We’re Obsessed With ‘Stranger Things 2’
The Duffer Brothers’ surprise hit Netflix series is back with a second season -- and it doesn’t disappoint! The residents of Hawkins, Indiana -- namely, Mike (Finn Wolfhard), Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo), Lucas (Caleb McLaughlin), Will (Noah Schnapp) and Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) -- find themselves dealing with the unexpected repercussions of the events of season one as new neighbors (Max and Billy, played by Sadie Sink and Dacre Montgomery, and Sean Astin as Bob) and new frights (we can’t say here!) arrive in their nostalgia-filled world. And for those keeping track, expect plenty of nods and references to everything from The Exorcist and Ghostbusters to Jurassic Park and Lost. And while you wait for the new season to premiere, we recommend streaming...

Once again, Ryan Gosling‘s poker face is no match for Kate McKinnon when she’s in character.
During the season 43 premiere of Saturday Night Live, the La La Land star was given a chance to redeem himself after getting a case of the giggles during a December 2015 sketch where he played a man who had been abducted by aliens — which apparently was a rather pleasant experience. However, his new hat couldn’t hide him breaking as he listened to McKinnon share how “the cookie crumbled a little different” for her when she was abducted.
