Candy is dandy, but liquor is quicker. After the Thursday preview box office totals arrived, it appears Warner Bros. Pictures‘ wallet is getting thicker! Wonka is off to a sweet start with $3.5M in previews from 3,500 locations. The candy-coated musical starring Timothée Chalamet expands to 4,203 theaters this weekend, with an estimated opening of $30M-$40M.
Wonka is one of three movies from Warners hitting theaters during the holiday season, with Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom and The Color Purple occupying screens in the lead-up to Santa’s big night. Aquaman 2 could breach the box office with $45M-$50M during its four-day debut, with The Color Purple bowing on Christmas Day with $8 million. Marketing for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom has been odd, considering the James Wan sequel is DC’s final film before James Gunn and Peter Safran reboot the Dcu in 2025 with Superman: Legacy.

The first reactions to Paul King’s Wonka, the prequel to Roald Dahl’s beloved Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, are in, with much praise for the film’s star Timothée Chalamet as the enigmatic Willy Wonka.
The origin film follows Chalamet’s Willy Wonka from his beginnings selling candy in a small shop to his rise as an eccentric genius chocolatier and the creation of his fantastical chocolate factory.
“#Wonka/ #WonkaMovie is a winning confection, filled with perfect amounts of charm, whimsy & poignancy, powered by pure imagination & bright, nimble musical numbers,” wrote Courtney Howard. “Timothée Chalamet is a charisma factory. His full committal is intoxicating. Hugh Grant in exceptional Idgaf mode.”
Gizmodo senior reporter Germain Lussier wrote that Chalamet “alone is reason to see the film,” adding “He’s infinitely charming and a blast to watch.” However, he wrote, “The movie around him isn’t as good but it’s enjoyable.

Paul King, director of Wonka, is teasing the film and Timothée Chalamet’s singing voice. The filmmaker compared Chalamet to Bing Crosby.
“[Chalamet]’s got a beautiful singing voice,” King said in an interview with Total Film magazine. “The person it reminded me of was Bing Crosby. There’s quite a range, because it does go from a couple of bigger, showstopper-y sort of things, to moments of real, pure emotion and he can do it all… I’m going to sound like a crazed fan.”
Although the film has musical numbers, King doesn’t want to classify the movie as a musical saying, “The Oompa Loompas sing a lot in the book, and Dahl always uses poetry. But I didn’t want it to just become a musical where people are singing dialogue to each other for no discernible reason. I felt like it was more like a movie with songs than a musical.

Warning: contains finale spoilers for Netflix’s Treason
Netflix’s five-part limited series Treason was released on Boxing Day and has a promising pedigree, as creator Matt Charman was Oscar-nominated for co-writing the screenplay for Steven Spielberg’s 2015 film Bridge of Spies. With just five episodes of about 45 minutes each, it’s a quick series to consume and digest over a couple of cold winter evenings, but it did come with something of a surprise in its tail… Spoilers ahead.
The Fate of Adam Lawrence
Halfway through the final episode, the show’s apparent protagonist, Adam Lawrence (Charlie Cox) is unexpectedly shot dead. CIA agent Dede Alexander (Tracy Ifeachor) has been convinced by corrupt Control of MI6 Sir Martin Angelis (Ciarán Hinds) that Adam is the double agent code-named ‘Dorian’ that everyone is trying to track down. Dede confronts Adam and holds him at gunpoint, demanding that Adam’s wife...

What would it take for you to believe that your partner has been compromised by a foreign power? Muttered Russian words in their sleep? A stash of secret documents under the floorboards? Mysterious phone calls during movie night? These are the questions posed in Netflix’s new conspiracy thriller, Treason, which finds Charlie Cox at the reins of MI6 but under the spotlight of both the CIA and his wife.
Adam Lawrence (Cox) becomes the new C, head of the Secret Intelligence Service, after his predecessor (Ciarán Hinds) is poisoned in a London private members’ club. “Your whole career has been building up to this,” his wife Maddy (Oona Chaplin) tells him. “Will you still be taking the bins out?” Of course Adam will still be taking the bins out! That’s because he balances a high-flying career with being a reliable family man. Two kids from his first marriage,...

Charlie Cox (of "Daredevil" fame) is suiting up for his grand return for Netflix, but sadly, there are no devil ears involved this time around. He won't be prowling the streets of Hell's Kitchen or defending New Yorkers with his background in law. But don't start moping quite yet — just because Netflix is no longer the home of his breakout role, doesn't mean they've forgotten Cox's virtues as an action star.
The actor is set to don a suit and tie as an agent for MI6 in the espionage thriller "Treason," a five-episode limited series from Matt Charman, the co-writer of "Bridge of Spies." In case you weren't sure about what to binge this holiday season, Charlie Cox has you covered. Just curl up on the couch, get cozy before the fireplace and watch Cox balance his conflicting loyalties, struggle to keep secrets from those closest to him, and desperately...

"You betrayed your country! For her!" Netflix has revealed a trailer for a limited series titled Treason, arriving for streaming at the end of December just before the New Year. Adam Lawrence was trained and groomed by MI6, his career seems set. He becomes the newly appointed head of the entire agency after an attempted assassination on the former leader. But when the past catches up with him in the form of Kara, a Russian spy with whom he shares a complicated past, he is forced to question everything and everyone in his life. Secrets, lies and diplomatic relationships will all come to light. A new spy series from the writer of the Bridge of Spies screenplay. Charlie Cox stars with Oona Chaplin, Olga Kurylenko, Ciaran Hinds, Tracy Ifeachor, and Brian Law. This seems like a very sneak, mysterious spy thriller with a lot of double-crossing, tricky things going on.

It's a good time to be named Charlie Cox. Netflix's — and now Marvel's — "Daredevil" star is set to lead the next phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the blind lawyer with excessive Catholic guilt in "Daredevil: Born Again." With that renewed social currency, Cox is finding a wealth of other stories to tell. Among them is Netflix's upcoming limited series, "Treason," which the United Kingdoms and Ireland branch of the streaming juggernaut's Twitter account revealed the show's release date.
The announcement came bundled with a collection of first-look images showcasing Cox and some of his fellow cast members (more on them later) all looking very serious in suits and bulletproof vests. Considering "Treason" is set to be a spy thriller piece in the same vein as "James Bond" and "The Bourne Identity," the attire seems appropriate.

“Quantico” star Tracy Ifeachor, “Star Trek: Discovery’s” James Frain (left) and “Rocks” actor Sharon D. Clarke are set to star in BBC drama “Showtrial” from “Bodyguard” producer World Productions.
The five-part series, which will air on flagship channel BBC One, is now in production. Ben Richards (“The Tunnel”) writes, while Zara Hayes (“Poms”) directs.
Ifeachor, Frain and Clarke have been cast alongside Sinéad Keenan (“Little Boy Blue”), Celine Buckens (“Bridgerton”), Kerr Logan (“Strike”) and Lolita Chakrabarti (“Vigil”).
Filmed and set around Bristol, “Showtrial” explores how prejudice, politics and the media distort the legal process. The show centers on Talitha Campbell, the estranged daughter of a wealthy property developer, who is charged with conspiring to murder fellow university student Hannah Ellis.
The trial that follows places victim and accused — and their families — in the eye of a media storm. Into that storm enters Cleo Roberts, the duty solicitor on the night of Talitha’s arrest.

USA Network appears to be exiting the scripted market.
The latest casualties at the cable network are Treadstone and The Purge.
They are both spinoffs of wildly popular movie franchises, but neither set the ratings alight upon their launches.
Treadstone is ending after just one season.
The series explored the origin story and present-day actions of a fictional CIA black-ops program known as Operation Treadstone — a covert program that uses a behavior-modification protocol to turn recruits into nearly-superhuman assassins.
The series follows sleeper agents across the globe as they’re mysteriously 'awakened' to resume their deadly missions.
The program breaks down these assassins' personalities, erases their memories, and eliminates their moral code so they can effectively kill targets around the world. Treadstone's legacy was present and begins in an East Berlin incident that transpires in 1973.
This involves John Randolph Bentley (Jeremy Irvine), one of the program's agents, who escapes his Soviet captors.

This comes after the project went straight to series, after originally being announced as a pilot order, thanks to an international distribution deal between Ucp and Amazon, similar to the arrangement that Ucp had with Netflix on Nightflyers.
The series explores the origin story and present-day actions of the infamous covert program that uses behavior modification protocol to turn recruits into nearly superhuman assassins. The first season of Treadstone follows sleeper agents across the globe as they’re mysteriously awakened to resume their deadly missions.

“Treadstone,” which begins in East Berlin in 1973 and zooms ahead to multiple locations in the present day, is, we’re told in its credits, “based on an organization from the Bourne series of novels by Robert Ludlum.” The description seems apt, in its clunky way. The Treadstone organization, which trains people to be supersoldiers and to keep their tactical knowledge subconsciously buried, is an element of Jason Bourne’s story now surgically cut off from the context and narrative richness of a good novel or film. And “Treadstone” feels, too, based on an organization and not a novel or film in its rigorous movement between plotlines, something that comes to feel less like narrative balance and more like mandated check-ins on a show that hasn’t yet decided what it wants to be about.
These plotlines are generally similar enough: A person, somewhere, comes to realize the powers they contain within them,...
