FX has ordered a new comedy created by and starring Brian Jordan Alvarez. “English Teacher” will follow a high school English teacher in Austin, Texas, as he tries to balance the demands of parents and students “in a world where the rules seem to change every day,” a press release for the series reads.
In addition to Alvarez, Paul Simms will executive produce the series. Simms is best known for his work on other FX series including “What We Do in the Shadows” and “Atlanta.” He is the current showrunner of the comedic vampire series.
“Brian is an incredibly talented writer, actor and creator who has fully delivered on his vision for ‘English Teacher,’” Nick Grad, president of FX Entertainment, said in a press release. “Together with a creative team featuring Paul Simms and Jonathan Krisel, along with this brilliant cast, they have created a hilarious, original comedy that is fresh,...

Exclusive: This Joka, a stand-up comedy series exec produced by Will Smith, will not be returning for a second season on Roku.
The streaming service launched the series, which came via its acquisition of short-form service Quibi, in March.
The series features a raft of stand ups including Punkie Johnson and Chris Estrada.
Deadline understands that the decision had nothing to do with the Oscars incident, where Smith slapped comedian Chris Rock on stage, but a somewhat unusual issue with timing.
Roku is believed to never really have had the option to renew the series, which is produced by Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith’s Westbrook Studios and Topgolf Entertainment Group. The option to renew lapsed before Roku launched the show, and certainly before the streamer had the chance to analyse its viewing data, meaning that it was unlikely to return for a second season on the platform.

Aziz Ansari made his first stage appearance since being accused of sexual misconduct in January. According Brooklyn Vegan, the comedian performed multiple sets at The Comedy Cellar, a New York club favored by Louis C.K., who was accused of sexual misconduct in November of 2017. While Ansari’s appearance was not advertised, he reportedly performed multiple surprise drop-in sets from Wednesday to Sunday of last week. Topics covered included Starbucks, racism, millennials, as well as some crowd work. The comedian and “Master of None” creator has been keeping a low profile since the allegations initially broke.
On January 13, the website Babe.net published a firsthand account from an anonymous 23-year-old woman who said Ansari behaved inappropriately while on a September 2017 date with her. “I believe that I was taken advantage of by Aziz,” she said. “I was not listened to and ignored. It must be a little hard to be famous partly for your voice work. People will recognize you, but it's hard for them to remember how they do. It results in stories like the below from Eugene Mirman, in which a salesclerk lets him in on a secret that the kid from Bob's Burgers comes into their store. The clip is from A Night at Whiplash, a Splitsider Presents documentary about the famed New York stand-up show. The film also includes performances from Janeane Garofalo, Michael Che, Sean Patton, Jared Logan, Carmen Lynch, and Sheng Wang. It's available here for download and stream. And if you ever see Eugene Mirman in public, don't even say hello, just list his credits and be on your way.

Bet you can guess which two Esquire magazine franchises have been ordered as specials by NBCU’s Esquire Network. If you guessed the franchises are: women, and bars — you’re right! Women We Love is an hour-long “celebration of some of the most captivating, impressive and alluring women from entertainment, sports, pop culture and more.” And we’re guessing you’ve already figured out it’s going to coincide with the mag’s annual “Sexiest Woman Alive” issue in November in which Scarlett Johansson is, for a second time, named Swa — because Esquire is apparently running out of them. In the magazine, Johansson says, sexily, “You know, I gotta hustle…I’m a 28-year-old woman in the movie business, right? Pretty soon the roles you’re offered all become mothers. Then they just sort of stop.” In the cable TV special, “fascinating women who inspire us with their beauty, intelligence,...

Standup comic Sean Patton's looks, voice, and wild energy have drawn comparisons to a young Jim Belushi, but this rising comedian's style is all his own. He was featured as one of the "New Faces" at the 2008 Montreal Just for Laughs Festival, and he's returning to perform as part of the fest's 30th anniversary this month. In between, Patton has developed his standup on comedy stages in New York, Los Angeles, and across the country; was featured on "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon" and Comedy Central's "Live at Gotham"; and performed at the Melbourne Comedy Festival. He currently co-hosts the weekly show "Comedy as a Second Language" with Chesley Calloway at Kabin Bar & Lounge in New York's East Village. And in June, Patton recorded his standup comedy album at NerdMelt in L.A. The album will be released in September on A Special Thing Records.Read our Back Stage Q&A with.

Montreal -- Montreal's Just for Laughs comedy festival wrapped its English-language industry showcase over the weekend without U.S. network talent scouts pulling out their wallets.
As in recent years, performing comics secured hearty applause and the occasional standing ovation at comedy's Woodstock, with possible deal-making to follow down the road after meetings back in Los Angeles or New York.
The big stage in Montreal as ever was the twice-nightly galas at the St. Denis Theatre, hosted Saturday night by Steve Martin, who brought his banjo and his Steep Canyon Rangers bluegrass band.
"It feels good to be doing something purely for the money," Martin joked while making his first-ever Just for Laughs appearance.
Dane Cook was a late and unpublicized addition to the gala bill, at the request of Martin.
"No one expected Cook, so it really surprised and delighted the (St. Denis) audience," Just for Laughs COO Bruce Hills said Sunday.
