Horror is, without question, still the backbone of cinema, even as cinema struggles in these uncertain times. This year saw a number of wins for the genre; original movies like Smile, Barbarian, and X and its prequel Pearl achieved both critical acclaim and box office success, and franchises like Scream, Predator and Hellraiser were all reignited with praised returns.
Like last year, there were a lot of horror movies to watch in 2022. This resulted in movies slipping through the cracks as the year continued, and bigger releases held the spotlight.
These ten hidden gems might have been overlooked at the time, but it’s never too late to discover them.

Chicago – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com appears on “The Morning Mess” with Ben Thompson on Wbgr-fm on July 29th, reviewing “Vengeance,” which is written, directed and features B.J. Novak of “The Office,” opening in theaters beginning July 29th.
Rating: 4.5/5.0
B.J. Novak portrays Ben, a dyed in the wool New Yorker who works as a podcaster for New Yorker Magazine. When the family of an old hook-up named Abilene (Lio Tipton) calls to tell him that she died, they expect him to come to the funeral, thinking he was her boyfriend. Curious, he goes to her Texas hometown, and finds an unexpected story that Abilene might have been murdered, and it would make a great podcast. He stays with Abilene’s family, including overly affectionate brother Ty (Boyd Holbrook) and kid brother nicknamed El Stupido (Eli Bickel). This review originally ran following the film’s world premiere at the 2022 Tribeca Festival.
The scattershot new media satire “Vengeance” might have been merely a toothless provocation replete with both-sides false equivalences were it not so well-scripted and well-directed on a scene-to-scene basis.
This post-truth black comedy, about a wannabe podcaster who investigates the death of a fair-weather romantic partner, benefits from writer-director B.J. Novak’s experience and command of sitcom-style humor. Novak also plays Ben, the smarmy, if basically sympathetic lead, but he fares much better behind the camera.
There’s consequently a genuine playfulness and appreciable back-and-forth rhythm in even the most obnoxious and played-out comedic routines, like an introductory scene where presumptuous New Yorker magazine writer Ben commiserates with John (John Mayer) about hooking up with random women. They frequently complement each other’s shallow talking points with “100,” which gives a little snap to an otherwise unpleasant...

The horror genre and mental illness don’t quite go hand-in-hand but movie directors have always found the genre a good way to express and show these problems. From 1963’s The Haunting (and even before that) to more recent films such as Daniel Isn’t Real, real-life problems can always be portrayed in scary ways.
Hypochondriac explores the life of Will (Zac Villa) who as a young boy was nearly murdered by his own mother. She was subsequently put away but despite not seeing her, remained in Will’s thoughts. Now, eighteen years later, he is living a happy life until he starts to hear from his mum in the form of parcels and phone messages. This coincides with Will starting to see things, and although the doctors tell him he is physically okay,...

A thirtysomething man’s traumatic past won’t let him move on in first-time director Addison Heimann’s Hypochondriac. Heimann’s own mental and physical breakdowns inspired this story of an otherwise happy potter descending into paranoia as a result of long-term familial pressures and undiagnosed mental illness. This film feels like a personal catharsis for the director, played out by a solid cast led by a fearless Zach Villa in the semi-autobiographical role of Will. We join Will as he is living the life. A great, creative job, a loving and supportive – if a bit stiff – boyfriend, and the kind of general upbeat disposition that makes others gravitate toward him when they feel down. However, when his estranged mother tries to get back in touch after...

Each year, the Fantasia International Film Festival is full of stories about supernatural horrors and fantasy worlds, but sometimes the most horrific experiences occur in real life, especially when people become overwhelmed and find it difficult to tell reality and fantasy apart. Addison Heimann’s directorial début puts its cards on the table at the outset with the legend ‘based on a real breakdown’. The film utilises several key elements from Heimann’s own life, but its narrative is slightly different and its characters fictional, so there’s no reduction in tension as a result.
The film opens when its hero, Will (played for most of its duration by Zach Villa) is just a boy. His mother (Marlene Forte) spirits him away to a motel one night, distraught about the idea that people are tracking them, and at first it seems as if they might be in real danger, perhaps from an abusive.

“Hypochondriac” informs viewers right away that it is “based on a real breakdown,” which certainly provides a new wrinkle on the now-wildly-overused “true story” proviso. Nonetheless, clarity of hindsight is not a major virtue in this adventurous first feature by writer-director Addison Heimann.
The offbeat indie drama features Zach Villa as a Los Angelean whose troubled past threatens to unravel his domestic partnership and his very sanity. The combination of gay protagonists, mental illness exploration, horror tropes, and surreal elements that gesture toward “Donnie Darko” make for an ambitious mix that holds attention, even if the uneven, somewhat muddled results are ultimately more effortful than insightful.
Following a festival tour that includes a midnight berth at SXSW and fitting slot in genre-focused Fantasia, XYZ Films will open the film in limited release on July 29, with digital and VOD release following Aug. 4.

July is a busy time for us here at Eye For Film as we bring you coverage of two major festivals, Fantasia and Outfest Los Angeles. Next month we’ll be covering Frightfest. Addison Heimann’s tale of family strife and emotional breakdown, Hypochondriac, is screening at all three. Based on a true story, it stars Zach Villa as Will, a young man with a loving relationship and a job he loves whose life abruptly starts to break down after he is contacted by his mentally ill mother, from whom he has been estranged for many years after a violent incident in his childhood. Experiencing panic attacks and hallucinations, Will is tormented by uncertainty over whether these are a result of stress, a manifestation of trauma or a sign that he is developing the same illness. "It will disturb you." "It will rip at you." XYZ Films has debuted an official trailer for an indie horror titled Hypochondriac, marking the feature debut of filmmaker Addison Heimann. This premiered at the 2022 SXSW Film Festival back in March, and also played at Panic Fest, Outfest LA, and the Neuchâtel Fantastic Film Festival in Switzerland most recently. Will is a young Hispanic potter / artist with a loving boyfriend and a good life, but when his deranged, mentally ill mother re-emerges after a 10 year absence, it erodes the foundation of the world he has created and exposes a dark past of violence he was desperate to keep hidden. Starring Zach Villa as Will, with Devon Graye, Paget Brewster, Marlene Forte, Madeline Zima, Yumarie Morales, and Chris Doubek. This looks crazy – in a good way. The setup with the story is fine, then it goes to some freaky places in the second half of this trailer.

“I have very little to say except that I think it very charming and kind of you all to give us your Sunday night,” said a disarming Julian Fellowes at the NYC premiere of Downton Abbey: A New Era last Sunday. Distributor Focus Features – and the broader industry — hopes audiences will give the film many more Sunday nights, and other days and dayparts, jumpstarting the return to theaters of older demos.
Downton opens this weekend on over 3,800 screens, not a specialty release but leading here as a bellwether for that elusive audience, a staple of arthouses, that had raised hopes briefly by turning out for No Die To Die last fall. Lingering Covid jitters or an entrenched streaming habit have kept the 45-plus crowd sparse in cinemas even as they flock to restaurants and other public activities. In honor of 4/20, Colson Baker aka Machine Gun Kelly debuted the Red Band trailer for his stoner comedy “Good Mourning,” which he wrote, directed, and stars in with Mod Sun.
The rom-com follows movie star London Clash (Baker) after the love of his life Apple (Becky G) breaks up with him via text. The timing couldn’t be worse as London has the most important meeting of his career on the same day. Compounded by chaotic roommates and wildly unpredictable twists and turns, London’s day keeps going downhill until, ultimately, he is forced to choose between pursuing his one true love and landing a life-changing, starring role in a major motion picture.
Whitney Cummings plays London’s agent, while Mod Sun and Pete Davidson star as his friends. Megan Fox also has a special guest appearance, with the ensemble cast rounded out by Dove Cameron, GaTa, Zach Villa, Jenna Boyd and Boo Johnson.

A thirtysomething man’s traumatic past won’t let him move on in first time director Addison Heimann’s Hypochondriac, one of several films dealing explicitly with long-buried psychoses in this year’s SXSW Midnighters section. A great, creative job, a loving and supportive – if a bit stiff – boyfriend, and the kind of general upbeat disposition that makes others gravitate toward him...

A debut like Addison Heimann's "Hypochondriac" turns heads, the same way Richard Bates Jr. once did with "Excision" — an intentional comparison because "Hypochondriac" channels the energy of Bates Jr. doing a "Donnie Darko" riff about mental health. It's impassioned, embraces LGBTQ+ authenticity, and feels fresh despite nearly cloning Donnie's pal Frank except with a wolf costume instead of a bunny. Heimann seamlessly blends nightmarish hallucinations into a traumatic breakdown that roots itself in traumas without treatment. Never as cheap exploitation, just as an alarming in-your-grill metaphor meant to posterize its messages of finding the courage to challenge hopelessness.

There is nothing funny about having a nervous breakdown, so it’s extremely admirable when someone can not only share their story with the world, but also manage to insert humor into a difficult situation. Writer/director Addison Heimann’s feature film debut, Hypochondriac, is an intimate, and sometimes hysterical, glimpse into his own personal experience with mental illness and the film is premiering at this year’s SXSW Film Festival.
Hypochondriac follows a young, gay man named Will, played by Zach Villa (American Horror Story), who gives a wonderfully authentic performance. When Will was a child, his mother (Marlene Forte) began acting strangely and after becoming violent, was admitted to a psychiatric hospital. Will then cut off all communication with his mother, partially on the advice of a therapist, played by Paget Brewster (Criminal Minds), and eighteen years later, he has a boyfriend and a job as a potter for an exclusive gallery.

Dubbed creepy nicknames such as "Hotel Death" and "The Suicide," the Cecil Hotel harbors a dark history as a hotbed for death, suicide, and murder. A magnet for crime, it was formerly home to serial killers such as Richard Ramirez and Jack Unterweger. In 2013, its notoriety hit off once more when 21-year-old Canadian traveler Elisa Lam was found dead in the hotel's water tank days after police released a chilling video of her in an elevator.
Lam's story is now the focus of Netflix's Crime Scene: The Vanishing at the Cecil Hotel, which interviews experts and hotel workers to clarify the context around her case. But this docuseries isn't the first time we've seen the Cecil or Lam's story referenced on the small screen. Back in 2015, the Cecil actually inspired Ryan Murphy to create American Horror Story: Hotel, which focuses on the disturbing events at the fictional Hotel Cortez.

One of the reasons why American Horror Story remains must-watch terrifying TV is the way in which it craftily utilizes real-life figures in its otherwise fantastical story plots, from making the Black Dahlia, Elizabeth Short, one of the unfortunate victims to pass through the Murder House to the banquet of ghostly serial killers convening at the Hotel Cortez in season six. Moving from Devil's Night dinner guest to recurring nightmare in AHS: 1984 was Richard Ramirez, played in the latter season by Zach Villa as a reliably murderous presence at Camp Redwood, imbued with supernatural powers that made him unkillable. Which can't be far from how...

The 2020 Emmy ballots have been released by the Television Academy, so we now know which shows, actors, etc. are in contention for this year’s golden statues. FX’s “American Horror Story: 1984” accounts for a whopping 29 entries across all competitive ballots, including 10 actors for their roles as counselors/workers at the hauntingly tubular Camp Redwood. This ninth season of the popular anthology series welcomed back fan favorites like John Carroll Lynch (as Mr. Jingles) and Emma Roberts (as Brooke Thompson) while also introducing some new blood in the form of Angelica Ross (as Nurse Rita) and Gus Kenworthy (as Chet Clancy).
This installment, which aired last September-November, is also notable for producing the show’s landmark 100th episode, which flash-forwarded a year after the massacre at Camp Redwood. Will “Ahs: 1984” continue the franchise’s winning streak at the 2020 Emmys? The first eight cycles took home 16 trophies, including acting wins...

All 22,000 plus voting members of the TV academy have until July 13 to cast their 2020 Emmy Awards nominations ballots for programs (save for animated documentary/nonfiction which are restricted to their peer groups). Unlike the Oscars, voters for the Emmys do not rank their choices and nominees are determined by a simple tally. In the past, voters were limited in the number of programs that they could put forth. Three years ago that cap (which was usually 10 per category) was lifted.
While there has been an explosion in the number of comedy and drama series recently, the limited series genre had been almost static. There were 25 entries in 2015, 26 in 2016 and 25 again in 2017. But there has been an uptick as of late, with 33 such shows submitted in 2018, 35 last year and 41 for this awards cycle. Even so, with five nominees for Best Limited Series, the odds for each of the entries detailed below is pretty good.

(Spoilers ahead for the entirety of “American Horror Story: 1984”)
It’s finally, mercifully, time for me to move on from “Ahs: 1984.” The season ended this week, after a season that somehow managed to establish a new standard for being all over the place for a series that is best known at this point for being all over the place. That’s quite an accomplishment, but not really a good one.
Before I can forget all of this ever happened, I have a laundry list of things that happened in “Ahs: 1984” that were super irritating and frustrating to watch, and I feel like I’m gonna go crazy if I don’t try to share this madness with our dear readers. So let’s do this. I have 18 items right now. I’ll probably add some more because I keep thinking of new ones.

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not yet watched “Final Girl,” the finale episode of “American Horror Story: 1984.”
The final episode of “American Horror Story: 1984” is appropriately called “The Final Girl,” a reference to the term given to that one (usually virginal) young woman who manages to survive the massacre in most horror movies. Who was could that be this time? Brooke (Emma Roberts) was the obvious choice, although Donna (Angelica Ross) would have been great — even if she did say last week, “A black final girl? Sweetheart, they kill folks with my complexion off first.”
Before finding out who the final girl was, however, the show jumped forward to 2019, when Ben’s (John Carroll Lynch) son Bobby (Finn Wittrock) came to Camp Redwood. He ran into Montana (Billie Lourd), who made some pretty funny comments about his smartphone — because obviously she doesn’t know anything about cell phones,...

Spoiler Alert: This recap contains major reveals from tonight’s American Horror Story season 9 finale “Ahs 1984: Final Girl”
Tonight’s season 9 finale of Ahs 1984 didn’t end like your run-of-the-mill ’80s slasher movie. There was no protag looking over their shoulder, worried the killer was still out there. There wasn’t a bad dream that the slayer was still alive. Instead, we end on syrupy note, literally Mike + the Mechanics’ Living Years, as we see the son of the father, completely cleaned of papa’s sins. And Billy Idol is a no-show, at least on the show which has served up singers playing themselves in the past, i.e. Stevie Nicks in Ahs: Coven.
In Final Girl, written by Crystal Liu and directed by John Gray, we meet Bobby Richter, played by Ahs troupe member Finn Wittrock. But instead of Wittrock playing a loose cannon, clown-obsessed rich brat like...

American Horror Story: 1984 Episode 8
The action at Camp Redwood has jumped forward in time to 1989, and it shows both in character actions and in character motivations. That's a big milestone; the change-over from one decade to another always seems like a big deal to people, and in a lot of ways to the characters on American Horror Story: 1984, the end of the Reagan era is also the end of their era of relevance. It's been a common retrain in the later portions of the season. Their time is ending, and they'll all soon be forgotten, but never is it more explicitly stated than in this week's episode, with multiple people eulogizing the good and ill of Reagan's America in long rhapsodies.

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not yet watched “Rest in Pieces,” the eighth episode of “American Horror Story: 1984.”
It’s almost time for the big finish on “American Horror Story” Season 9. The penultimate episode of the “1984” season, entitled “Rest in Pieces,” started on the day before Halloween, 1989, and saw a return to Camp Redwood for all of the key players.
Sitting in a diner, Brooke (Emma Roberts) vowed to Donna (Angelica Ross) that she was going to kill Margaret (Leslie Grossman) before she runs off to start a new life. But because they were talking about such dark things in a public place, it didn’t take long for a motor-mouth reporter named Stacy to wander up to them. At first she just wanted to complain about how awful their time period is, ranting about “Iran-Contra, the TV show ‘Small Wonder’ and crack.” But she obviously...

(This post contains spoilers for “American Horror Story: 1984” through the episode that aired Nov. 6. You have been warned.)
The penultimate episode of “American Horror Story: 1984” aired Wednesday, setting up what we can only assume is going to be a bonkers finale to a season which had such a seemingly straightforward premise that we had no idea it would get this crazy by Episode 8.
Tonight’s installment was all about introducing more questions than ever before, as we prepare for the end of this ’80s-slasher story. And because there have already been so many twists, we can’t help but wonder: how will Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk and their camp bring “Ahs: 1984” to a close without a bunch of loose ends.
See below for TheWrap’s list of the biggest questions we have and check back next week to find out which ones have — and haven’t — been answered by the finale.

Outspoken Olympic figure skater Adam Rippon launched his YouTube channel in May with a Portal A-produced series dubbed Break The Ice, in which the bronze medalist has heart-to-heart conversations with various celebritity guests while teaching them how to ice skate.
Following the success of the first season of Break The Ice-- which featured appearances from fellow YouTube stars like Manny Mua, Todrick Hall, and Molly Burke, and which garnered roughly 3.5 million views across all platforms -- Rippon has nabbed a sponsor for the show's sophomore outing: none other than luxe vodka brand Ketel One.
Season two, which will run from Oct. 30 to Dec. 18, comprises eight ten-minute episodes with appearances from: Queer Eye's Bobby Berk, Zach Villa of American Horror Story fame, Glow’s Jackie Tohn, YouTube duo Superfruit, musician Betty Who, YouTube sexologoist Shannon Boodram, and fellow figure skater (and Dancing With The Stars alum) Meryl Davis.
