Arsenal are the second most successful team in the Premier League era (level with Chelsea on three league triumphs), despite now not winning the title in ten years. They could not have achieved this without making some quality signings and building strong squads over the years.
Arsene Wenger was hailed during his early years as manager as someone who could spot a potentially world class youngster and bring him to the club for buttons before developing him into a star.
He has done this countless times, signing Nicolas Anelka for £500,000 before flogging him to Real Madrid a season later for a £23 million profit. Thierry Henry was signed for £10.5 million after being labelled a flop at Juventus. Kolo Toure was brought to the club as a relative unknown and converted into a top quality centre half who became a vital part of the Invincibles team.

It’s fair to say that Liverpool’s 2014/15 season has been an utter disaster so far. Having so brilliantly finished second last season, nobody would have predicted such a poor showing this time around, regardless of the exit of the wondrous Luis Suarez. Brendan Rodgers’ side have produced consistently insipid performances, and because of it they currently lie in eleventh place in the Premier League and have been eliminated from the Champions League.
It’s incredibly hard to think of anyone who has actually played well for the Reds so far this season- Daniel Sturridge’s reputation has probably been enhanced the most because he’s been injured for the majority of the campaign. The likes of Kolo Toure and Lucas Leiva have come in and done better than many would have predicted, while youngsters Alberto Moreno, Javier Manquillo and Emre Cam have at least shown a bit of promise.

Liverpool are in Spain preparing for tonight’s daunting Champions League showdown with Real Madrid, knowing that a victory would arguably be the most unlikely triumph in the club’s history. Brendan Rodgers’ side are in extremely poor form, both domestically and in Europe, while Carlo Ancelotti’s star-studded team are scoring goals for fun and are the current champions of Europe. They key question is: has there ever been a game the Reds were less likely to win since the competition’s inception in 1992?
The 2005 Champions League Final is probably a good place to start. AC Milan, managed by Ancelotti at the time, had a ridiculous amount of talent in their side, whether it be Cafu and Paolo Maldini at the back, Andrea Pirlo, Clarence Seedorf and Kaka in midfield or the brilliant Andriy Shevchenko up front. Not many gave Rafa Benitez’s Liverpool much hope,...

Manchester City have spent hundreds of millions of pounds on transfers since Sheikh Mansour and his Abu Dhabi United Group’s multi-million pound takeover of the club in 2008, with over £1 billion being spent within the first three years of ownership alone, according to reports.
Money has been no object where the middle east private equity company are concerned and they wasted no time in making their financial muscle known with the 2009 summer transfer window ending with City as the biggest spenders in the Premier League, bringing in the likes of Gareth Barry, Carlos Tevez, Roque Santa Cruz, Emmanuel Adebayor, Kolo Toure, and Joleon Lescott.
The club’s transfer policy of ‘spend, spend, spend’ whatever the cost has reaped its rewards, with the Citizens winning two Premier League titles in the six years since the takeover – in 2012 and 2014. Some of the world’s greatest...

Liverpool have a big summer ahead of them: despite over-achieving this season, and only missing out on winning the title after an agonising slip-up – quite literally – against Chelsea, and a frustrating draw against resurgent Crystal Palace some unthinkably have called Liverpool’s second place finish a failure. Paul Merson – a man unafraid of bold statements that don’t always trouble logic – likened the “capitulation” to Newcastle’s spectacular implosion in 1995/96, which the Anfield side had a major hand in, and though that is a particularly ludicrous assessment, the fact that Brendan Rodgers came so close now changes the playing field for his side.
Even if Liverpool’s objectives next season are only to finish in the top four, since they came ahead of schedule this year, their achievements will be tempered by the fact that they almost won the league this season, and all pragmatism aside, any...

Steven Gerrard scored a 90th minute penalty as Liverpool left it late to beat Fulham and move within four points of Premier League leaders Chelsea.
Fulham led twice through a Kolo Toure own-goal and Kieran Richardson’s first of the season, but Daniel Sturridge, Philippe Coutinho and Gerrard ensured Brendan Rodgers’ team engineered a comeback.
Liverpool may have started Saturday’s victory over Arsenal on fire but it was Fulham who began the match brightly at Craven Cottage, Ryan Tunnicliffe drawing a good save from Simon Mignolet and Dan Burn heading just over from a corner.
The home side deservedly took the lead after 8 minutes, former Arsenal defender Toure slicing Richardson’s tame cross into his own net from inside the six-yard box.

Liverpool have made a shock loan bid for Micah Richards, reports The Daily Mail. Liverpool are currently short in the right back position with Glen Johnson suffering from a number of injuries that are limiting his playing opportunities.
The bid was immediately rejected by Manchester City, meaning that Brendan Rodgers will either have to come in with a better offer or look elsewhere for cover.
Richards has made only nine appearances for Manchester City in the last two seasons, as Pablo Zabaleta has been preferred at right back by manager Manuel Pellegrini. Micah Richards has let it be known in recent weeks that he would look at leaving the club if he was not able to get more first team football.

Liverpool came through a thorough Fa Cup fourth round examination from Championship club Bournemouth with Victor Moses and Daniel Sturridge scoring at Dean Court.
Eddie Howe’s Cherries made a swashbuckling start with Andrew Surman heading over. Brad Jones in the Reds goal had a torrid time from set pieces, palming over a dipping Simon Francis free kick in between dangerous corners.
Marc Pugh nodded into the side-netting from another set play on 20 minutes. Despite rarely threatening during the first quarter, Liverpool went close through Steven Gerrard’s dead ball and then caught their hosts on the counter.
Luis Suarez crossed from the right for winger Moses. His shot flew through the legs of Matt Ritchie and under Lee Camp on his near post. Bournemouth top scorer Lewis Grabban forced Jones into a low stops moments after the restart.
Harry Arter swerved a shot just wide after half an hour.

Championship club Afc Bournemouth have never beaten Liverpool in four previous attempts – all in the Fa Cup. Will their fifth ever meeting produce a giant-killing in the fourth round at Dean Court?
Reds boss Brendan Rodgers will hope to avoid such a banana skin on the eve of his 41st birthday. Cherries counterpart Eddie Howe is five years his junior, but both managers saw their own playing careers blighted by injury. Now they will be their coaching wits against one another.
Bournemouth boast a decent recent home record of just one defeat in the last two months. Nine goals have gone in during their four fixtures on their own patch since Christmas. Liverpool meanwhile have enjoyed mixed results on the road.
Defeats at Manchester City and Chelsea were sandwiched between big scoring wins away at Spurs and Stoke.

Liverpool stayed fourth in the Premier League table by winning for the first time in the top flight at Stoke City since 1984 in memorable fashion.
The Reds bested their hosts in a thrilling encounter that contained eight goals. Ryan Shawcross put through his own net early on before Luis Suarez nipped in on another defensive error that put Brendan Rodgers’s boys 2-0 up.
Peter Crouch and Charlie Adam came back to haunt their former club, however, and brought the Potters level by half time. Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard restored their lead after the break through a softly won penalty courtesy of Raheem Sterling.
Suarez then struck again when set up by the returning Daniel Sturridge to make it 4-2 to the visitors. Jon Walters set up a grandstand finish for Stoke, but Sturridge settled the points in the Reds’ favour.

If there is one thing that can be learned by Liverpool’s performances against Manchester City and Chelsea in recent weeks, it is that they are improving and they are a top side, but they’re still not quite there in terms of title contention. The Merseyside team have grown in leaps and bounds recently and performances have evidently been improving, though they tend to fall short whenever facing the creme-de-la-creme in the Premier League, with the exception of the Manchester United and Tottenham wins earlier in the season. With the goals of Suarez, solid performances from the likes of Sakho and Sturridge, and the staggering improvements in Jordan Henderson, the future looks bright for Brendan Rodgers’ side.
However, the fact remains that Liverpool were top of the league on Christmas Day and have since dropped down four places to fifth. Needless to say,...

Liverpool were perhaps the busiest of the 20 Premier League clubs in the summer transfer window, bringing in eight new faces, such as Simon Mignolet, Kolo Toure, Iago Aspas and Luis Alberto.
These investments appeared to have been paying off until recently, with the Reds fighting it out with the likes of Arsenal and Chelsea for first place in the table.
However, last weekend’s defeat to the former put into stark reality the need for further investment in January, as Brendan Rodgers’ side were played off the park by the Gunners.
Rodgers himself admitted yesterday the need for new recruits if his side are to finally crack the top four and qualify for the Champions League for the first time since 2009-10, and hinted at as many as two new arrivals.
The Northern Irishman said:

Liverpool’s steady progress this season suffered a setback when they lost their top of the table clash at Arsenal 2-0 at the weekend.
Whilst the Reds remain in the chasing pack along with the Gunners’ London rivals Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur, boss Brendan Rodgers will be targeting January reinforcements.
Central midfield may be one area in particular that the Merseyside outfit will look to strengthen. Wide areas too may receive attention from Rodgers. And then there’s Luis Suarez. Speculation continues to be rife about the controversial Uruguayan’s future at Anfield.
The Reds’ summer recruitment was substantial, but has had mixed results. Spanish forward pair Iago Aspas and Luis Alberto have struggled to make an impact. Defenders Kolo Toure and Mamadou Sakho meanwhile have been regulars in a back three in front of Belgian keeper Simon Mignolet.

Liverpool were snubbed by Toby Alderweireld this summer before the centre-back agreed a move to Atletico Madrid, according to Team Talk.
The 23-year-old former Ajax defender was linked with a move to the Reds but instead completed a switch to Spain on transfer deadline day, after being lured away from the Amsterdam club.
Liverpool were in the running to sign the young Belgian international, but appear to have had their efforts to sign the player rebuffed.
Brendan Rodgers’s side instead ended up securing deals for Mamadou Sakho and Tiago Ilori from Paris St Germain and Sporting Lisbon, respectively, while Alderweireld claims he was their first choice.
He told the Spanish press following his arrival at Atletico:
“The club have been following me now for two or three weeks, and you could see they really wanted me.

For Liverpool, this summer, or indeed their start to the new Premier League season, could scarcely have gone any better.
Three wins from three – including one against old enemy Manchester United – nine points from nine and top of the table, not a bad start at all for Brendan Rodgers’ men.
And their good performances on the pitch follows success off it, as the Reds were able to complete the bulk of their transfer business with time to spare, bringing in eight new players before last night’s deadline day cut-off.
They were even able to persuade Luis Suarez to stay at Anfield – for now – after months of speculation linking the Uruguayan with a move to Arsenal and Real Madrid.
For a while, it looked as though their top goalscorer for last season might quit, but news that he is staying will come as welcome relief for the Kop.

One of the biggest fixtures of the Premier League season is set, and with the history between the two there is no wonder why many fans of both clubs look forward to this match the most of all 19 pairings. Liverpool are at home for this one and come into the match-up off the back of two wins in their first two, whilst Manchester United won impressively away to Swansea and followed up with a 0-0 draw against title challengers Chelsea.
Liverpool have been active in the transfer window with the signings of Kolo Toure, Aly Cissokho and Simon Mignolet amongst others. Manchester United have been the polar opposite to Rodgers’ side, with the capture of Guillermo Valera remaining their lone signing of the summer. Though Moyes is poised to sign a further player or two, it will not be in time for Sunday’s match-up. Liverpool are...

Veteran goalkeeper Shay Given is wanted by Liverpool as back-up to Simon Mignolet, according to the Sun.
The Aston Villa shot-stopper was set for a season-long loan to Doncaster after being informed he is deemed surplus to requirement at the Midlands club.
However, Liverpool are now in talks over a deal for the 37-year-old and sources claim the move is set to be given the thumbs up.
Given, who has played for Newcastle United and Manchester City, won the Fa Cup with the latter side before moving on to Villa following the emergence of Joe Hart in 2011.
The Republic of Ireland international has made 37 appearances with the Villans but only two in the Premier League last season after falling down the pecking order behind Brad Guzan.

As the deadline day for this summer’s transfer window fast approaches, Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers can look back with very few regrets.
The Northern Irishman has been one of the more active Premier League bosses, buying in five new recruits in Aly Cissokho, Simon Mignolet, Iago Aspas, Luis Alberto and Kolo Toure.
And while these players will doubtlessly improve Liverpool’s strength in depth over the course of what promises to be another arduous campaign, none of them can really be considered “marquee signings”.
Last month, Rodgers admitted that he was targeting “a higher calibre of player” in order to challenge for that ever-elusive top four spot.
But, despite being linked with the likes of Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Willian, the Merseysiders have thus far been unsuccessful in landing a really notable target.

Liverpool have rejected a £10 million bid from Italian outfit Napoli for defender Martin Skrtel, according to the BBC.
The Anfield club were contacted on Tuesday over the availability of the Slovakian centre-back with new Napoli manager Rafa Benitez keen on being reunited with the 28-year-old.
Benitez signed Skrtel from Zenit Saint Petersburg in 2008 during his time as Liverpool boss.
Since then, the defender has gone on to make more than 200 appearances for the Reds and won the League Cup in 2012.
However, in recent times, he has fallen down the pecking order under new manager Brendan Rodgers, and was limited to just 25 Premier League appearances last season.
And the arrival of Kolo Toure on a free from Manchester City has only served to provide Skrtel with yet more competition for places in the starting XI.

Since the guide to the best point-per-pound Fantasy Premier League was so popular, here’s yet another little bit of statistical analysis; the best 20 players from the action on Saturday 17th August.
The opening day saw a slew of goals, assists, and clean sheets from both old and new players, and with Manchester United setting the early pace, it’s an interesting time to consider whether to buy some of their unfancied stalwarts.
I’ve gone through how they got their points, and various other little tid-bits, such as their goal/assist/clean sheet pedigrees, their likelihood of playing consistently, and various other little small factors which can be the difference between a good team and a great team. Each of these 20 players is in a different scenario, so it’s important to consider all of the various factors before choosing to buy and sell.
As mentioned previously,...

Each of these 20 players is in a different scenario, so it’s important to consider all of the various factors before choosing to buy and sell.
As mentioned previously,...

Manchester City are lining up a bid for Atletico Madrid’s Martin Demichelis after being frustrated in their efforts to sign Pepe this summer, according to the Mirror.
New City boss Manuel Pellegrini is in the market for a centre-back this summer after Matija Nastasic was ruled out of the first month-and-a-half of the new Premier League season with an ankle injury.
And, after allowing Kolo Toure go to Liverpool, the Chilean is light of options.
Pellegrini could feasibly use Yaya Toure, Javi Garcia or Micah Richards as a makeshift centre-half but his move for Real Madrid’s Pepe have signalled his concerns at the back.
And these worries were intensified by the 3-1 defeat to Arsenal in pre-season last weekend.
Real, however, continue to insist Pepe is not for sale which has led Pellegrini to veteran Argentinian centre-back Demichelis.

Liverpool are odds-on favourites for their opening game of the season against Stoke City.
During Pre-Season, Liverpool have won 6 games and have lost only once and scored 17 goals and conceding just two. Stewart Downing completed his move to West Ham early in the week for £5 million, ensuring that Liverpool must find a decent replacement. Liverpool are reportedly interested in Brazilian winger Willian, which would be a perfect addition to Liverpool’s top four hopes.
Stoke won three games out of their five, drawing once, and losing once. They scored four goals and conceding two. Stoke are interested in Mame Diouf, but were told to up their bid of £7 million, to £17 million.
Brendan Rodgers knows that nothing short of a top-four finish will do, especially as his side don’t have the demands of a European campaign after failing to qualify last season. Without the suspended and want-away Luis Suarez until late September,...

Liverpool have enjoyed an active summer transfer window with manager Brendan Rodgers wasting no time at all in bolstering his squad ahead of the new Premier League season in two weeks’ time.
Already, Kolo Toure, Luis Alberto, Iago Aspas and Simon Mignolet have been brought in while goalkeeper Pepe Reina has been loaned out to Italian outfit Napoli.
And Rodgers has promised that “more exciting” transfers are coming before the window slams shut on September 2.
Toure, Alberto, Aspas and Mignolet are all decent signings and will doubtlessly provide the Merseyside club with more depth than before, but none of them really get the pulses racing.
And Rodgers himself readily admits the club need a greater injection of quality if they are to challenge for a top four finish this term.
And that “injection of quality” might be essential if the club end up being forced into selling Luis Suarez to Arsenal.

Liverpool look to have beaten rivals Sunderland to the signature of Valencia left-back Aly Cissokho, with the player agreeing terms at Anfield, according to the Shields Gazette.
The Black Cats made an enquiry for Cissokho last month with manager Paolo Di Canio left frustrated in his attempts to bring in a new fullback at the Stadium of Light after Spurs blocked their attempts to re-loan Danny Rose.
Rose enjoyed a successful season during his short stint on Wearside in the 2012/13 campaign but the North East club have been forced into looking elsewhere for a left-back.
And their search for a new defender could continue with news that Liverpool have agreed terms with Cissokho.
Reports in Spain yesterday claimed the Valencia star has agreed on a move to Anfield, having been linked with the move for much of the summer.

Liverpool have been one of the more active Premier League teams in this summer’s transfer window with manager Brendan Rodgers wasting no time at all in strengthening the depth of his squad.
Sunderland goalkeeper Simon Mignolet, Manchester City defender Kolo Toure, Celta Vigo forward Iago Aspas and Barcelona B midfielder Luis Alberto have all joined the Anfield club in recent months.
And it is the latter of that quartet that looks the most exciting purchase, with the Spain U-21 international joining an already young and vibrant Liverpool side containing 21 stars under the age of 25.
It is these starlets that will form the bedrock of the club in years to come – with some already forming part of the starting XI on Merseyside.
Clearly, exciting times lie ahead for Liverpool as these currently unbridled players continue their development at the club and grow into hopefully world class players.

The summer transfer window has been a productive one for Liverpool and manager Brendan Rodgers so far.
Already, four new recruits have been brought in to bolster the team with Sunderland goalkeeper Simon Mignolet, Manchester City defender Kolo Toure, Sevilla midfielder Luis Alberto and Celta Vigo forward Iago Aspas all signing for the Merseyside giants in recent weeks.
Already, the Reds look well-placed to mount a serious challenge for the top four places next season, however, it has not been completely plain sailing for the Anfield outfit.
The club’s record goalscorer last season, Luis Suarez, looks set to leave the club having been the subject of two failed bids from Arsenal, one at £30 million and the other at £40 million and £1.
Despite these two offers being flatly rejected, the Uruguayan has been granted permission to hold transfer talks with Arsenal and could be about to call time on his two-year stay on Merseyside.

Liverpool have learned from their lessons last season and have wasted no time at all this summer in getting the bulk of the transfer dealings wrapped up in good time.
Sunderland goalkeeper Simon Mignolet, Manchester City defender Kolo Toure, Celta Vigo forward Iago Aspas and Barcelona B midfielder Luis Alberto have all moved to Anfield in recent months, a stark contrast to 12 months ago.
Then, the Reds allowed the likes of Craig Bellamy, Dirk Kuyt and Andy Carroll leave, and failed to replace any of them in the summer window, leaving the forward line threadbare until January, when Daniel Sturridge was plucked from Chelsea.
Those were hairy times for the Kop but now, manager Brendan Rodgers finds himself in a much healthier position following his recent acquisitions – and he hasn’t put his chequebook away quite yet, either.

Liverpool have been one of the busier Premier League teams in this summer’s transfer market.
Already, Simon Mignolet, Kolo Toure, Iago Aspas and Luis Alberto have all joined Reds manager Brendan Rodgers’ Anfield revolution as the Merseysiders plot yet another seasonal pursuit of that ever-elusive Premier League title.
Having already improved his defensive line with the purchases of Mignolet from Sunderland and Toure from Manchester City, Rodgers is still keen to bolster his back four further by bringing in a new left-back.
Earlier this week, the Northern Irishman revealed he is keen to add to this area of his squad to provide cover for first-choice left-back Jose Enrique next season.

Liverpool could miss out on Christian Eriksen this summer after Italian giants AC Milan entered the race for his signature, according to talkSPORT.
Reds manager Brendan Rodgers has signed four players so far this summer – Sunderland goalkeeper Simon Mignolet, Manchester City defender Kolo Toure, Celta Vigo forward Iago Aspas and Barcelona B midfielder Luis Alberto.
But the Northern Irishman is now looking for a “higher calibre player” and is thought to be keen on Eriksen.
The Ajax midfielder is also thought to be interested in speaking to Liverpool, with just one year left to run of his current contract in Holland.

David Moyes has been in the Old Trafford hotseat for two full weeks now and still there is no sign of activity on the transfer front.
The ex-Everton manager has watched as his former Merseyside rivals Liverpool have brought in the likes of Simon Mignolet, Iago Aspas, Luis Alberto and Kolo Toure while he himself has yet to act this summer.
United have been linked recently with Leighton Baines, and have seen a £12 million bid for the left-back knocked back by Moyes’ former club, but other than that, the Premier League champions have been relatively inactive over the summer months.
That being said, Moyes confidently declared at the weekend that money is no object at Old Trafford and that he has all the cash he wants to spend on new recruits.
The 50-year-old told The Sun:

Out of all the 20 Premier League clubs this summer, Liverpool have been the busiest in the transfer window so far.
Four players have joined the Anfield outfit so far – Sunderland goalkeeper Simon Mignolet, Manchester City defender Kolo Toure, Celta Vigo forward Iago Aspas and Barcelona B midfielder Luis Alberto.
But manager Brendan Rodgers does not intend to stop his spending there. Yesterday, the Northern Irishman stated:
“We’ve improved the squad – now we must improve the team.”
To achieve said feat, the ex-Swansea boss wants to make some “marquee signings” this summer, in order to boost his side’s chances of qualifying for Europe next season.
The signings the 40-year-old has made so far vary from the experienced to the unknown. Toure and Mignolet will undoubtedly help bolster the Red’s defence but Aspas and Alberto still have much to prove, and only time will tell if they prove to be wise acquisitions.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is tracking Galatasary striker Burak Yilmaz, according to Team Talk.
The Northern Irishman is drawing up a shortlist of forwards to replace want-away Luis Suarez, should the unsettled Uruguayan secure a move away from Anfield this summer.
A host of the continent’s leading clubs have shown an interest in Suarez, with Real Madrid, Chelsea and Arsenal all displaying a vested interest in the 26-year-old.
Should the ex-Ajax man leave Liverpool this summer, Rodgers wants to bring in a big name to replace him, and has identified Yilmaz as one option who could help fill the void.

The 27-year-old has also enjoyed spells at Beşiktaş and Fenerbahçe, and has scored 126 career goals.

Liverpool have confirmed the signing of Simon Mignolet from Sunderland in a £9 million deal, report the BBC.
The 25-year old passed a medical at the club yesterday and agreed personal terms on an undisclosed, long-term deal.
The Belgian international becomes Liverpool’s fourth summer signing following the acquisitions of Manchester City’s Kolo Toure, Sevilla’s Luis Alberto and Celta Vigo’s Iago Aspas.
Manager Brendan Rodgers said of the deal:
“I am delighted that we have been able to sign one of the top goalkeepers in the Barclays Premier League, Simon will join a club that will give him an opportunity to demonstrate and improve his huge talent.”
Mignolet joined Sunderland from Belgian side Sint-Truiden for just £2 million in June 2010.
But his market value has since sky-rocketed thanks to a series of fine performances in the Premier League recently, keeping 11 clean sheets in 40 matches last season for the Black Cats.

Liverpool look set to miss out on Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan after the Armenian rubbished speculation linking him to Anfield, according to the Express.

The Ukraine giants have already told Red’s manager Brendan Rodgers that his side would have to fork out £20 million for Mkhitaryan’s services and the Northern Irishman was keen on the player and of the prospect of the goals he’d bring to his side.

Newly promoted Premier League side Cardiff are set to rival Liverpool for the signature of Blackpool winger Tom Ince, according to the Daily Mail.
The Bluebirds have agreed to meet Blackpool’s £8 million asking price for the young England international, who has featured for the Three Lions at U17, U19 and U21 levels.
The deal would include a guaranteed fee up front plus add-ons. However, Liverpool remain favourites to land the attacking midfielder, who is a product of their youth academy but was sold to Blackpool in 2011.
The Reds have an option to match any bid for the 21-year old under the terms of his move to The Tangerines two years ago.
They also have a 35% sell-on clause which means they could re-sign the youngster for an initial fee of just over £5 million.

Liverpool’s extensive summer recruitment programme is set to continue, with the Merseyside club in advanced talks to sign Porto’s Christian Atsu, according to the Guardian.
The Reds have already signed defender Kolo Toure from Manchester City and have provisionally agreed a £7.6 million deal for Celta Vigo striker Iago Aspas, while Shakhtar Donetsk’s £22 million-rated midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Sevilla forward Luis Alberto are also believed to be on the way to Anfield.
But the spending won’t end there with manager Brendan Rodgers keen to bring in Porto’s promising winger Atsu, who is valued at just £3 million.
The Ghanaian is known as a quick and talented wideman but has at times put in some erratic performances. He was brought into the Porto first team by now-Spurs manager Andre Villas-Boas and is viewed by Rodgers as an individual who can offer his team more attacking width next season.

The Armenia intentional has been in superb form having scored 25 times in 29 Premier Liga games leading Shakhtar to the their fourth consecutive title. Mkhitaryan was the top goalscorer in the league and has proven his ability throughout the season.
Whilst it looks like the player is happy at the club, Liverpool are confident...

In professional football, instances of players being banned for ‘doping’ offences are relatively rare. In November 2005, Abel Xavier became the first Premier League player to ever be banned for using performance enhancing drugs. He tested positive for the anabolic steroid, methandrostenolone, and was suspended for 18-months; a punishment which was reduced to 12-months after appeal.
To date, no other Premier League player has been banned for intentionally using performance enhancing drugs. Kolo Toure was banned in 2011, after taking dietary tablets containing a prohibited substance. However, authorities eventually agreed that they were not intentionally taken to enhance his sporting prowess.
Cases in other major leagues are also rare. Inter’s Mohamed Kallon was banned for using nandrolone in 2003 and there have been several other cases scattered around Europe, but they are few and far between. This lack of positive tests has led many to conclude that football, unlike cycling, for example,...

After confirming their first signing of the summer, Liverpool could be looking to the Bundesliga and 21 year-old Greek International Kyriakos Papadopoulos to bolster their defensive ranks. It was announced on Tuesday that Kolo Toure will be joining The Reds from Manchester City when his contract expires. He comes on a free transfer and after almost a decade in the English game has a great deal of experience to pass on.
Valued at roughly £12 million, Papadopoulos has been recovering from injury for the second half of the 2012/13 campaign. However, in the previous seasons at German club Schalke 04 the big centre-half showed his potential with a string of high quality performances in the Champions League arousing interest from some of Europe’s bigger clubs.
With him comes several physical attributes that would hold the Greek in good stead applying his trade in English football. Papadopoulos is strong and plays taller than his 6″0 stature would suggest.

Liverpool have signed Celta Vigo forward Iago Aspas for £9 million, according to a report in the Telegraph.
Aspas will complete his move to the Premier League next week when he arrives in Liverpool for a medical following the conclusion of the La Liga season this weekend. Celta are currently embroiled in a relegation battle in Spain.
Aspas becomes Anfield boss Brendan Rodgers’ second signing in just two days after securing the signature of veteran Manchester City defender Kolo Toure yesterday, who joins the Merseyside club on July 1st on a free transfer.
Able to play in several attacking roles including as a central striker or out on the wings, Aspas would seem ideal for Rodgers’ favoured 4-3-3 formation, and a front-line of Luis Suarez, Daniel Sturridge and Iago Aspas looks particularly mouth-watering for the Reds.
Where the signing of Aspas leaves Andy Carroll should be interesting to see unfold over the coming weeks.

Liverpool have “agreed a deal in principle” to sign Kolo Toure when his Manchester City contract expires on July 1st.
The Ivory Coast international (103 caps) centre-back will join the Anfield club on a free transfer.
Toure, 32, brings a wealth of experience to the Reds having won two Premier League titles in a decade of top-flight English football, once at Arsenal (2003-2004) and once at Manchester City (2011-2012). His time at both clubs saw him win a further three Fa Cups and three Community Shield trophies.
Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has moved particularly quickly to bring in his first signing of the summer, and Toure could be seen as an ideal replacement for the retiring veteran Jamie Carragher and doubts over Martin Skrtel and Sebastian Coates’ future situation on-going. Perhaps Rodgers is also mindful that last year a failure to act swiftly to bring in a striker after Andy Carroll’s...

Liverpool will make a move for Manchester City defender Kolo Toure on a free transfer once his contract expires in June, according to the BBC.
With Jamie Carragher now retired, Brendan Rodgers is on the lookout for two new centre backs and along with the 32-year old has also identified Schalke’s Kyriakos Papadopoulos.
Toure is currently away on City’s post-season tour of America but once he returns his move to Anfield is set to be finalised quickly.
The 32-year old joined City from Arsenal in July 2009 for £14 million and was part of the Gunner’s “Invincibles” team that went a whole season without defeat in 2003/04.
His signing though would seem to go against the club’s policy of signing young players and he would become the first ever player over the age of 24 that manager Brendan Rodgers has signed since taking over from Kenny Dalglish at Anfield.

Manchester City have had a disappointing campaign and with their eyes on correcting it, The Guardian are reporting that several key players are set to leave as City look to rebuild their squad for next season.
Manchester City will embark on a clear-out of players at the end of the season. Carlos Tevez, Gareth Barry, Edin Dzeko and Samir Nasri head a group of 11 whose futures are in doubt, with Roberto Mancini determined not to repeat last summer’s mistakes in the transfer market.
This could come as a shock to many Man City fans as the likes of Barry and Dzeko have played a part this year but Mancini clearly wants to bring in more quality. Last summer the club failed to secure any of their lead transfer targets and he can’t afford to make any of the same mistakes in that department.

Arsenal’s season is entering a critical stage: on the verge of a Champions League exit to Bayern Munich, the Gunners are in danger of missing out on a top 4 spot for the first time since 1996. With eleven games to go, Arsenal need to overhaul one of their London rivals – Chelsea or Tottenham – but on the back of the North London derby defeat to Spurs hope is fading from the Emirates.
Recent transfers have left the Arsenal squad in a relatively dire state. The loss of Robin van Persie, Alex Song, Cesc Fabregas, Samir Nasri, Gael Clichy, Kolo Toure, Emmanuel Adebayor, Mathieu Flamini, Thierry Henry…(the list goes on) has helped the bank balance but their replacements have not matched their predecessors’ performances. Arsenal have slipped from title winners to potential Europa League participants, while the average of the squad has increased.

Didier Drogba hugs Gervinho. The Arsenal winger is visibly shaking. He walks forward but the nerves are still there. It’s seven goals apiece. Kolo Toure had missed but Rainford Kalaba blasted his chance over. Gervinho, unsurprisingly, does the same. The Zambian team are all knelt near the centre-circle as Stophira Sunzu walks forward. The pressure of an entire nation is on his shoulders. The memory of the 1993 team that tragically never made it to the Cup of Nations has hung over the side for almost twenty years. Sunzu strikes it and as the ball hits the back of the net the crowd erupts in jubilation.
Zambia finally lifting the African Cup of Nations trophy was one of the most emotional moments in the history of football – something everybody could enjoy. But for the Ivory Coast team it represented another missed opportunity for the golden generation. It was another story...
