James Mangold is not hiding his distaste for Hollywood Elsewhere founder and writer Jeff Wells. The “Logan” director lashed out against Wells on Twitter after the film writer made a jab at Mangold’s latest Wolverine film by calling it “too violent.”

Mangold replied to Wells by saying he could’ve predicted his negative reaction. Wells tried to amend his comment by linking to his article “Logan.” Wells’ piece isn’t exactly positive, although it does praise Dafne Keen’s breakout performance.
“Really? Jesus, Jeff. I’m gonna have to assume you have aspergers or otherwise I just can’t keep up the good will,” Mangold replied. “Aw, fuck it. Shove your self promoting links to your crooked prognostications up your pompous ass. And find a new hairstyle, that pomp is getting Trumpy.

The Muse Rich Juzwiak on the recent Lgbt scraps thrown in mainstream Hollywood movies. Frankly I've been insulted, rather than thankful, by both of them. Few fall films, foreign or otherwise, are as likely to generate conversation as Park Chan-wook‘s The Handmaiden, a sprawling and seductive story of deceit, murder, and plenty of sex — or the kind that leaves quite an impression. Early on in The Hateful Eight‘s lifecycle, an untimely leak cast doubt over the chances that Quentin Tarantino’s bounty hunter Western would ever see the light of day, after the director threatened to scrap the project once its screenplay had surfaced online. Low and behold, Tarantino returned at the helm and we’re now within touching distance of the film’s release, but things could have been so different.
Doing the press rounds for The Weinstein’s feature, Tarantino revealed in an interview with David Poland that a novelized series had prompted him to pitch The Hateful Eight as a follow-up to fellow Western Django Unchained.
“After doing Django I knew I didn’t want to do any Django movie sequels or anything, but I liked the idea of there being several paperbacks that could be the further adventures of Django or maybe go back in time, a couple more Django/Schultz adventures.

If you're ever feeling down about your own relative lack of creative accomplishments, take solace in the fact that even Quentin Tarantino has novels in his head he'll likely never write. While speaking to David Poland, Tarantino revealed that the idea for the upcoming Hateful Eight originally came to him as the plot of a Django Unchained spinoff book. "I hadn’t written a novel before and I thought I would just try my hand at writing a Django paperback," he said. "At the time it was called Django In White Hell. Instead of Major Warren [played by Samuel L. Jackson in the film], it was Django." However, he soon discovered there was a problem: In order for the story to work, there couldn't be a hero. "A certain point I realized, Well, you know what’s wrong with this piece? It’s Django. He needs to go," he recalled. "Because you shouldn’t have a moral center...

While Jedi training tells you not to give into hate, when it comes to "The Hateful Eight," you'll probably want to walk over to the dark side. Quentin Tarantino's vengeance western is on the way, and he's been making good use of the press circuit to provide long-form conversations. His latest is with David Poland, and as ever, it's a good watch. Don't worry about spoilers, as the half-hour talk avoids those, but it's no less fascinating. In fact, the discussion kicks off with Tarantino revealing that the genesis of the movie was spurred from an aborted novel he was writing about Django from "Django Unchained" called "Django In White Hell." It's where the stagecoach scenes originated from, and "The Hateful Eight" grew from there. Meanwhile, the chorus is growing louder for The Weinstein Company to release an official list of where 70mm screenings of the movie will be available.

The performance and fine arts-focused multi-channel network has struck deals with Kuma Films and David Poland to produce specials, for both linear and video-on-demand distribution, which feature the creators’ artistic works.
Ovation, which was founded in March by the cable TV channel of the same name, will work with Kuma Films on an original TV documentary special centered on Kuma’s work and the creative process behind it. The yet-unnamed special will include new footage as well as Kuma’s human performance videos from its YouTube channel, which boasts over 180,000 subscribers. The Kuma Films special is set to air on Ovation’s linear TV channel and VOD service in the fall of 2015.

With a number of critically and commercially successful films to their names, Christopher Nolan, David Fincher and Paul Thomas Anderson have their admirers, those who assume they could do no wrong. But there are those who are divided in their opinions. Nolan’s Interstellar and Fincher’s Gone Girl topped the domestic box office when they were released and currently hold the No. 15 and No. 17 spots, respectively, for the highest-grossing films in the domestic box office for 2014; however, the films received mixed reviews from Academy members and critics. So Jessica Chastain, inbetween taking super cute photos on the Oscar campaign trail, is on it, she told People:
I think there are some incredible actresses in their 50s and 60s that are not getting opportunities in films. And for someone to say there are plenty of roles for women that age – they're not going to the movies enough."
Preach, Jessica. Preach!

Sony Pictures is releasing the controversial Seth Rogen/James Franco action-comedy The Interview in Australian cinemas on February 12, as counter-programming against Fifty Shades of Grey.
The film was due to open on January 22 but was withdrawn amid the Sony hacking scandal, threats to Us cinemas and North Korea.s objections to the plot depicting an attempt to assassinate Kim Jong-un.
The crude satire was released in the Us on more than 300 indie cinemas on Christmas Day and on digital platforms, generating $US31 million in online revenues and $5 million in ticket sales.
Australian exhibitors are supporting the release but some worry its B.O. prospects will be diluted because many Aussies have already downloaded the title.

En route to Palm Springs yesterday afternoon, I saw the news that the National Society of Film Critics had gone against the flow, where most would have expected a "Boyhood" win, and named Jean-Luc Godard's "Goodbye to Language" the year's best film. What I wasn't fully aware of until this morning was the wave of displeasure it apparently spurred. First, some thoughts on the organization's history. They often settle on something perfectly reasonable if not inspired, and sometimes that falls outside the sphere of major Best Picture contenders. "Inside Llewyn Davis," "Amour," "Melancholia," "Waltz with Bashir," "Pan's Labyrinth," "American Splendor," "Mulholland Drive," "Yi Yi: A One and a Two" — that's just a brief, selective history. And I'm forever in love with their "Out of Sight" choice in 1998. Only five films have won all three major critics group awards (Nsfc, Lafca and Nyfcc): "The Social Network," "The Hurt Locker,...

1/2 my screener stack. The ones that are coming with me for the holiday. Just in case. What do you still have to cram in before your film year is done? I imagine a lot given the Christmas release dates, damn these last-minute movies, amirite? This Thanksgiving, I am very thankful for screenings and screeners. I couldn't keep up without them given the writing and interviewing and blog prep and awards coverage necessary in December and January.
Screener Suggestions
Over at the Gurus of Gold, David Poland asked us to name three screeners we'd suggest that Academy / SAG / etcetera voters watch over the holiday break. The collective results aren't up yet but I went with:
Pride because it might end up topping the list of 'best movies of 2014 that people didn't watch or even hear about' Nightcrawler because Jake Gyllenhaal did better work than some of the alleged frontrunners and I've...

"Interstellar" has begun to screen for critics around the world and the first reviews are coming in with some intriguingly divided reactions. Pretty much every review praises the visuals, scope, acting and ambition of the project and urge readers to see it on the biggest screen possible.
Yet, quite a few have some big issues with the script, the manipulative emotion and the themes on display. Here's a sampling of review quotes so far:
"Illustrates the very best and the very worst of Nolan as a writer-director. On the plus side, there's a stunning portrayal of how far-reaching space travel might work... and a vision of robots like nothing I've ever seen in a movie. Weighing against that, without getting into spoilers, is a third act of staggering wrongheadedness, along with female characters whose intellect takes a back seat to their exploding emotionalism and rage..." - Alonso Duralde, The Wrap...

I explain why I have taken a hiatus from project producing, why I went to Fandor, and what we are truly capable of building now — in pretty specific detail.
It is a glorious future that we are moving forward to. My faith in cinema is restored. I think yours can be too.

Patty Clarkson last night in NYCLast night I attended Teen Vogue's Maze Runner screening and though I'll be writing it up for my gig at Towleroad later this week, I must share with you, my devout fellow actressexuals and the only ones who will understand, that I made the night all about Patricia Clarkson.
I didn't even realize she was in the movie until she was there at the reception and I was powerless to stop myself from beelining straight toward her while the other guests of the studio and fans (who presumably won a contest or something?) spent the evening squealing about Dylan O'Brien who plays "Xander" excuse me... First Things First: at Movie City News the "Gurus of Gold" have begun (yes, I'm a part of it again) and as David Poland points out there are seven films that made almost every list: Birdman, Gone Girl, Boyhood, and Unbroken tied at 1st place with Foxcatcher, Selma, and Interstellar just behind them. Most pundits are feeling these as Best Picture threats. Look at the whole chart though to see how everything fared. The highest ranking films that were not on my list (we were asked to submit 15 films) are Wild and Inherent Vice.
Birdman Flies
Early rave reviews at the Venice Film Festival from The Telegraph, Variety and THR and a couple positive but not ecstatic reviews from The Guardian and The Film Stage are up and surely bode well for the film. I'm holding off on reading them as I want the movie fresh when I see it.

You gotta hand it to IFC Films. Generally speaking, the promotional efforts from the distributor are modestly matched with the art house and indie fare they tend to specialize in, but they are certainly going big for "Boyhood." We can't remember the last time an IFC Films project got airtime on "Today," but this morning it happened. Yep, the epic, coming-of-age drama got pulled out in front of the nation on network TV, and in case you missed it, you can watch below. Meanwhile, stars Ethan Hawke and Patricia Arquette talked for 30 minutes about the project with David Poland, and a clip from the film has arrived taking us back to when Hawke and the kids in the film were much, much younger. If that's not all, Rope Of Silicon recently chatted with the filmmaker and he provided a couple of updates on some projects that, unsurprisingly, still aren't moving along.

I haven't organized my thoughts. I'm warning you up front. I am just collecting them like dead leaves and throwing them at you in chunks with links to related articles. I'm doing my meager part to engage with Cannes from my Harlem apartment across the ocean...
Competition & Un Certain Regard
After that much maligned Monaco kick-off, not uncommon with festival openers, Cannes competition films have been collecting more fans. Well, not Atom Egoyan's Captive (which was booed) but the others. And frankly no film festival ever wins consensus "that was awesome" reviews anyway. It's part of the ritual this 'it's a terrible year for the fest!' hand-wringing.
Diana chimed in earlier today on the African film Timbuktu and Mike Leigh's artist biopic Mr. Turner which we can safely suspect will win plentiful Oscar talk. There's a ceiling for Leigh films with Oscar but the Academy adores him nonetheless.

It's pretty rare that we get to watch a single actor or actress interviewed for more than five or 10 minutes while they're out promoting a movie, which is why we always enjoy David Poland's 30-minute interview series. Sitting down with someone for an extensive amount of time allows for a more relaxed conversation -- one that isn't rushed due to time constraints during which only the same questions are asked over and over again. Poland's most recent 30-minute chat with Jonah Hill is a fun one to watch, as the actor opens up about how his friendship with Dustin Hoffman's son Jake eventually lead to Hoffman recruiting Hill for David O. Russell's I Heart Huckabees. At the time, Hill was making boxes for some guy, and he was forced to quit...
