Special “Black Out” performances of Jeremy O. Harris’ stage production Slave Play were well-received by the Broadway community in 2019 when producers of the controversial, acclaimed and emotionally complex play about race relations announced that they would set aside a relatively few performances to invite all-Black audiences, an effort to welcome a group traditionally marginalized or even excluded by Broadway.
The Black Out Nights promotion was intended to both expose Broadway theater to a community that may not have been in the habit of attending, and to allow Black audiences to experience, as a community, the thorny-issued satire.
But when a similar plan was announced for the upcoming West End production – starring, among others, Kit Harington – the promotion met with resistance from some quarters, most notably from the UK Prime Minister himself.

Game of Thrones star Kit Harington will return to the London stage in the upcoming production of Jeremy O. Harris’ acclaimed and controversial Slave Play.
Despite the star casting, Slave Play playwright Jeremy O. Harris assures audiences that Harington’s presence will not be a “distraction.”
In an interview with London’s The Guardian, Harris said Harington was emphatic that the ensemble piece not be turned into “the Jon Snow experience” (a reference to Harington’s character on Thrones).
“Kit was saying ‘I don’t want this to be Kit Harington in Slave Play, this is an ensemble play and I’m not even the lead,’” Harris told the newspaper. “He knows the weight his name carries and how that could become a distraction, if we allowed it to be.”

The Drama League today announced the nominations for the 2023 Drama League Awards. Honoring achievements on and Off-Broadway, the nominations were announced this morning by Roger Bart (“Back to the Future: The Musical”) and Justin Guarini (“Once Upon A One More Time”) at the New York Library for the Performing Arts. “I don’t think I’ve experienced a theater season in New York ever like this one,” noted Artistic Director Gabriel Stelian-Shanks. “There’s been a range, a breadth, an expansion of possibility that has been truly astonishing to witness. Theater makers have inspired not only with their creativity, but also with their drive and determination to serve audiences with vision and talent. These nominees reflect the promise and greatness inherent in the work of theater folk, and I can’t help but be deeply proud.

With a recession on the horizon, a year of racial protests in the rearview and a pandemic still rippling and raging, it makes sense that this season’s theater revivals lurk and pace around the American Dream. The mythical, unwieldy concept — marked by relentless striving and repeated heartbreak — is inherently Sisyphean, resembling our senseless approach to these times.
On Broadway, Miranda Cromwell, director of Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman, reintroduces the Lomans as a Black family — a change that complicates Willy (played by Wendell Pierce) and layers his tragic end. At the Public Theater in New York, Robert O’Hara directs Lorraine Hansberry’s A Raisin in the Sun, a work that examines the American Dream with a shrewd dubiousness, looking past the glamour to the festering sores. Before Danai Gurira returns this fall as the Wakandan general Okoye in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” she’s scheming and murdering her way onto the English throne in director Robert O’Hara’s new production of “Richard III” at the Public Theater’s Free Shakespeare in the Park. Here are three things to know about “The Walking Dead” star’s latest endeavors.
Her “Richard III” is all about toxic masculinity.
“We’ve always been around toxic masculinity, but I think there are ways that we’re labeling and seeing it now,” says Gurira. “There are these ongoing issues in how our nations are led and in how our politics function and in how toxic masculinity finds its way through society, and I hope it illuminates things when it’s coming through my being.”
She adds: “It’s been interesting to get an understanding of how much privilege comes with it. Women...

Danai Gurira welcomes you to the winter of discontent. The royal knave she inhabits, King Richard III, lies among William Shakespeare's oeuvres of doomed regents. The nature of the real King Richard III of England is up for historical discussion. How much does Shakespeare's text (printed around the 1590s) function as Tudor propaganda against him? This line of discourse may not apply much to this staging of "Richard III" at the Public's NYC Free Shakespeare in the Park. Director Robert O'Hara ("Slave Play") is more preoccupied with the Bard's text as an outlet to...

Danai Gurira, the actress most widely known for her roles in Marvel’s Avengers franchise and AMC’s The Walking Dead, will play one of the stage’s great villains this summer when she takes the title character of Richard III for New York’s Free Shakespeare in the Park.

Slave Play, the incendiary Jeremy O. Harris play that went rejected by Tony Award voters Sunday night two years after dazzling critics and helping start theater’s conversation about race, will return to Broadway for a limited engagement this fall.
Harris made the surprise announcement at a post-Tony party for his play last night.
Slave Play was nominated for 12 Tonys – the most nominations ever for a single play – but won zero, losing the Best Play award to The Inheritance. All five of Slave Play’s acting nominees lost to cast members of other shows.
Perhaps expecting a better Tony showing, Harris and his producers held off on announcing the return engagement until awards night. Slave Play will begin performances Tuesday, Nov. 23, at Broadway’s August Wilson Theatre, with an official opening night of Thursday, Dec. 2. The strictly limited eight-week engagement will run through Sunday, Jan. 23, 2022.

Moulin Rouge! The Musical, the stage adaptation of the 2001 film, won the Tony Award for Best Musical tonight. The Inheritance, Matthew López’s elegiac two-part drama about the AIDS scourge inspired by E.M Forster’s Howards End, won the Tony Award tonight for Best Play.
López, after thanking and acknowledging three queer artists who inspired him, noted that he was the first Latinx playwright to win a Tony Award for Best Play. He said that while the Latinx community made up 19% of the U.S. population, the number drops to only 2% on Broadway. “This must change,” he said.

After playwright Jeremy O. Harris’ hit show Slave Play had its final performance at the Golden Theatre on January 19th, 2020, he was applauded by some for changing the way audiences engaged with Broadway theater — but also found many detractors. Harris had insisted on being a co-producer of the show, made sure to offer more affordable tickets ($39 rather than the average $124), and hosted a “Black Out” performance, which reserved all 804 seats for black students, performers, journalists, and artists. It seemed a shoe-in for Tony accolades, then the coronavirus pandemic shuttered Broadway...

More than 200 theater writers – playwrights, composers, lyricists, librettists – have joined a nationwide letter writing campaign urging the incoming Biden-Harris Administration to prioritize its commitment to an arts community ravaged by Covid-19. Among other goals, many of the letters urge the administration to create a Department and Secretary of Arts & Culture.
Organized by the non-partisan grassroots coalition Be An #ArtsHero in partnership with The Dramatists Guild of America, the “Dear Mr. President and Madam Vice President” campaign asserts that “the Arts are vital to our nation’s soul and our collective humanity, as well as being an essential driver of the economy.”
Among those writing letters: Jeremy O. Harris (Slave Play), Anaïs Mitchell (Hadestown), Heidi Schreck (What The Constitution Means To Me) as well as V (formerly Eve Ensler), Craig Lucas, Theresa Rebeck, Sarah Ruhl, Marsha Norman, Lynn Ahrens, Zakiyyah Alexander, Jaclyn Backhaus, Bekah Brunstetter, Carla Ching, Vichet Chum, Paul Downs Colaizzo,...

Slave Play playwright Jeremy O. Harris will donate a collection of 15 plays by Black playwrights to 53 libraries and community centers across the country, a donation made in lieu of sending Slave Play scripts to Tony Award voters.
O. Harris made the announcement last night on Late Night with Seth Meyers, telling the NBC talk show host that a donation of The Golden Collection has been made in Meyers’ name to his alma mater Northwestern University. The playwright said the donation was made to recognize Meyers’ early and continued support of Slave Play.
The Golden Collection, named for Harris’ grandfather Golden Harris who died two weeks before the playwright learned that Slave Play had been booked at Broadway’s Golden Theatre, was launched in partnership with the Human Rights Campaign. The plays selected for the collection include Les Blancs by Lorraine Hansberry, The Colored Museum by George C. Wolfe, An Octoroon by Branden Jacobs Jenkins,...

Blame the coronavirus for this year’s drastically reduced roster of eligible Tony Award nominees, and Tony nominators for overlooking at least a few possibilities. Even with only 18 Broadway productions in the running for a 2020 award, feelings were bound to be hurt.
Let’s start with the good news: The list of nominees for the 74th Annual Tony Awards is a solid one, with no noticeable contenders – at least to my eye – sneaking in due to the decreased competition. Good luck to voters parsing their choices for one castmate over another – Sea Wall/A Life‘s Jake Gyllenhaal or Tom Sturridge? Slave Play‘s Ato Blankson-Wood or James Cusati-Moyer, and Chalia La Tour or Annie McNamara? Jagged Little Pill‘s Kathryn Gallagher, Celia Rose Gooding or Lauren Patten?
Of course we’ll never know how the list would be different if Six, West Side Story...

In an unprecedented year for the Broadway community, the Tony Awards just gifted theatre fans with a reason to celebrate: Jeremy O. Harris’ audacious and brilliant “Slave Play” now holds the record for the most play nominations in a single season with a whopping dozen.
That eclipses by one the benchmark set by the 2018 revival of Tony Kushner’s “Angels in America,” which scored 11 bids including Best Revival, Director (Marianne Elliott), Actor (Andrew Garfield), Featured Actor (Nathan Lane), two in Featured Actress, Original Score, and Scenic, Costume, Lighting, and Sound Designs. “Angels” took home three trophies for Revival, Garfield, and Lane.

The 2020 Tony Awards may represent a shortened Broadway season, but there is a wealth of contenders to consider for the play categories. Fall and winter on the rialto was full of non-musical dramas, which will make for plenty of tense races at this year’s ceremony. Nominations will be announced October 15 with a virtual ceremony sometime later this fall. To help you predict which productions and performers might come out on top this year, take a read of the potential nominees for the play categories below.

If you’re confused as to who is actually able to compete for the newly announced virtual Tony Awards this fall, you’re not alone. The Tony Awards Administration Committee announced a new cut off date of February 19, 2020. That means that the 2019-2020 Broadway season was cut incredibly short.
Musical races are most heavily affected by the shortened season. “West Side Story” will have to wait until next year to compete as it opened after the February 19th eligibility cutoff date. Other scheduled revivals of “Caroline, or Change” and “Company” were postponed due to the Broadway shutdown. As such there will be no Revival of a Musical category this year. Other categories, like Best Musical and Director of a Musical, will likely see their number of nominees reduced to three due to a limited number of contenders.
Luckily, there are plenty of plays in contention since many of these non-musical outings premiere in the fall.

Slave Play playwright Jeremy O. Harris has entered a two-year overall deal with HBO, and is developing an untitled pilot as well as returning to the HBO series Euphoria as co-producer.
The deal was announced today by Francesca Orsi, executive vice president, HBO Programming.
“Jeremy is a singular talent whose groundbreaking work in the theatrical space has already revolutionized Broadway and we couldn’t be more honored to expand the reach of his voice in television,” says Orsi.
The overall deal includes a discretionary fund that Harris can use for new theatrical projects which he will “commission, enhance and produce” for himself and others, says HBO.
