Netflix is moving from quarterbacks to wide receivers and tight ends in its latest NFL docuseries.
The streamer has ordered Receiver from the team behind Quarterback – NFL Films, Peyton Manning’s Omaha Productions and Patrick Mahomes’ 2Pm Productions.
The series follows stars such as Las Vegas Raider Davante Adams, Minnesota Viking Justin Jefferson, San Francisco 49ers George Kittle and Deebo Samuel and Detroit Lion Amon-ra St. Brown.
It comes after Netflix last year launched Quarterback starring Kansas City Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes, Kirk Cousins, then of the Vikings, and Marcus Mariota, then of the Atlanta Falcons. Manning said Netflix had renewed Quarterback for a second season, but admitted that finding subjects was also tricky, hence the pivot to receivers.
The series follows this group throughout the 2023 season, which saw the 49ers beaten in the Super Bowl by the Chiefs.

‘Bye Bye Barry’ Overtakes ‘Kelce’ To Become Prime Video’s Most-Watched Documentary Film Ever In U.S.
Exclusive: There’s a new sports documentary on top at Prime Video.
Bye Bye Barry, which tells the story of hall-of-fame running back Barry Sanders, has become the streamer’s most-viewed documentary movie ever in the U.S. — taking the title from Kelce, just over two months after that sports doc set the record for Prime Video.
In the documentary, Sanders finally explains why he retired from the Detroit Lions in 1999 while at the height of his career. It’s an explanation that sports fans appeared eager to hear, given the film had the biggest first week of any documentary movie ever on Prime Video in the U.S. after debuting on November 21.
Bye Bye Barry premiered at No. 1 among Prime Video’s Top 10 domestic films and has remained there ever since, according to the streamer.

If you’re a sports league or a superstar athlete, it used to be that you wanted all eyes to be on the field, court or track. Now, the real action occurs as much after the game’s over, with cameras still rolling. The runaway success of Netflix’s Formula 1 docuseries Drive to Survive and golf docuseries Full Swing has sparked a mini frenzy from leagues, teams and athletes, all of which are hoping that a hit docuseries of their own can drive new interest in their in-game performances, or at least provide an ancillary stream of revenue to an already lucrative sports business.
Netflix, for its part, is happy to crow about its success in the genre. “After Drive to Survive took off, fans started packing the stands at the races,” the streamer’s vp ad sales Peter Naylor told a crowd at Advertising Week New York on Oct.

Peyton Manning and Netflix are searching for more quarterbacks to profile in a second season of their NFL docuseries.
Manning, who exec produces Quarterback, which starred Patrick Mahomes, Kirk Cousins and Marcus Mariota, revealed that the streamer had greenlit the series for a second season.
Speaking on The Pat McAfee Show, the Colts legends said, “Season 2 has been greenlit by Netflix, we’re excited, we’re hoping for more quarterbacks, it’s easier to say yes. I don’t want to hear ‘It’s going to be a distraction’ because that’s not true, Patrick Mahomes proved that, Kirk Cousins proved that, Marcus, the way he handled that, proved that. We’re hoping that guys after seeing it say this is going to be a cool thing that I can show to my kids when I’m older, show to my grandkids one day. Hopefully the pitch will be easier.

It will debut on September 5 at 8pm. It will also stream on The CW app.
It comes after The CW made the controversial decision to air the Liv Golf League and has been making noise about wanting to increase its sports coverage.
Produced by NFL Films, The CW is now looking for new hosts and producers. Previous hosts have included Dan Marino, Phil Simms, James Brown, Cris Carter, Cris Collinsworth, Brandon Marshall and Ray Lewis.

Roku, NFL Films and Skydance Sports are teaming on a documentary feature about the NFL Draft.
Once an obscure, bureaucratic ritual involving a conference room full of league officials, the draft has mushroomed into a pop culture event drawing millions of live TV viewers. Long held at New York’s Radio City Music Hall, the draft has adopted a rotating schedule with large outdoor venues hosting it in various cities.
Kevin Costner and Jennifer Garner starred in a 2014 scripted film, Draft Day, in the same milieu.
The new documentary will focus on the three days of the draft and plans call for an annual edition to be produced. It will be designated as a Roku Original, from Skydance Sports and produced by NFL Films for the Roku Channel, a hub for free, ad-supported content wit reach to an estimated 100 million U.S. households.

Skydance Sports, NFL Films and the Jerry Jones family are collaborating on what they call a “defining” docuseries about the Dallas Cowboys and the arc of Jones as the owner and builder of the franchise over 30-plus years.
As president and general manager, Jones is credited with engineering a massive turnaround that led to three Super Bowl titles in the 1990s. While the Lombardi Trophy has remained out of reach during the past quarter-century-plus, Jones and his family have shepherded the rise of the Cowboys to the status of the most valuable franchise in professional sports.
Using never-before-seen footage from the NFL Films archive, the as-yet-untitled series will trace Jones’ rise from the son of an Arkansas community store owner to the top of the pro sports heap. Interviews will feature ex-Cowboys players Troy Aikman, Michael Irvin, Emmitt Smith and Deion Sanders; former head coaches Jimmy Johnson and Barry Switzer...

HBO’s NFL docuseries for the first time will feature two teams, and they share the same city: The Los Angeles Rams and Chargers.
Additionally, HBO renewed the series for an additional four years, which will take it through 2024. The franchise has been on HBO since 2001.
The Rams were previously featured on the docuseries in 2016, the franchise’s first year back in L.A. after spending 20 years in St. Louis. This will be the first time the Chargers will get the “Hard Knocks” treatment. Both teams are set to move into the new SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, Calif. this season, provided the coronavirus pandemic doesn’t mess up those plans. The new season will debut on Tuesday, Aug. 11.

HBO’s annual NFL-sanctioned look inside the process of teams preparing for the season will this year follow both the Rams and Chargers in one of the most unusual summer training camps ever held.
Hard Knocks: Los Angeles will premiere August 11 at a moment of uncertainty about how Covid-19 will shape pro football, a contact sport where an NBA-style “bubble” of isolation is not possible.
Ratings-wise, the popularity of football has carried over to the NFL Films-produced Hard Knocks, whose last four seasons have averaged four million weekly viewers. The series, which premiered in 2001, has never previously focused on two teams at once.
The coronavirus pandemic is apt to be a major storyline, regardless of how much it is reflected in the show’s five episodes. The NFL has proceeded largely with business as usual, conducting its annual draft online in April and announcing that training camps would proceed this summer,...

The NFL and Pluto TV have reached a deal to launch the NFL Channel, a curated library offering, on the ad-supported streaming service.
Because Pluto is available free for consumers, much of the programming on its 150-plus networks approximates but does not duplicate what pay-tv subscribers get via the traditional bundle. That means the NFL Channel will not mirror the NFL Network, which has evolved into a well-distributed staple in the league’s media portfolio. Instead, according to the official launch release, the new initiative will be dedicated to “celebrating the NFL’s iconic and classic moments spanning over a decade of past seasons.”
Pluto, which was acquired last January by Viacom and now has 18 million monthly active users, offered the NFL an appealing way to broaden the audience for its in-house production arm’s offerings. Ross Ketover, senior executive of NFL Films, told Deadline in an interview that the...
