The studio description of Mark Burnett and Roma Downey‘s new faith-based film “Little Boy” calls it “powerful and moving,” but the majority of critics prefer adjectives like “manipulative,” “shameless” and “deeply stupid.” The drama set in a sleepy California town during World War II has a mere 12 percent approval rating from a total of 33 critics counted, so far, on Rotten Tomatoes. Alejandro Monteverde (“Bella”) directed the PG-13 family-oriented film about eight-year-old Pepper (Jakob Salvati), nicknamed Little Boy for his short stature, who befriends elderly Hashimoto (Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa), a Japanese-American man regularly tormented by racist townspeople, while waiting for his.

Interview Transcript Cbm (Nate Best): Hey, how are you doing Jakob? Jakob Salvati: Good, how are you? Cbm: I’m doing great! Thanks for taking the time to hop on the phone with me. So Jakob, I heard that you are kind of into comics. Is that true? Jakob: Yes, very true. Cbm: What comics do you read? What ones do you collect and keep up on? Jakob: Well, I don’t exactly collect any, but I read them. Mostly I read ones about Spider-Man and Hulk. Cbm: Out of the comic book characters, are those two your favorite? Jakob: Yes, out of all of the comic book characters. Cbm: I just got back from the Avengers: Age of Ultron premier, are you as excited as everybody else to go see it? Jakob: Yes, very excited. I’ve been counting down the days until it comes out, if that’s what you mean.

So, what’s the cure for overloading on the all-depressing news (now bombarding you with 24-hour cable channels along with the “interweb”)? Well, a time machine would be great. Imagine pulling the lever on Rod Taylor’s 1960 model or Doc Brown’s DeLorean-based 1985 sweet ride (thirty years, can’t be!). Too bad they don’t exist, but buying a ticket at the multiplex can whisk you away for a couple of hours or so, right? The feel-good nostalgia flick has become almost as popular a genre as the haunted house spook show or the sports “underdog” story. The 1940’s have proved a most popular destination for, well over forty years (remember Summer Of 42 back in 71’?). It’s been the setting for a very recent Oscar winner, The Imitation Game, and even a big superhero blockbuster with Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Hey, we just visited it two weeks ago in...

Little Boy takes us back to the days of World War II and into the life of an 8-year old boy named Pepper Flint Busbee (played by newcomer Jakob Salvati). Pepper is nicknamed Little Boy because of his diminutive size, and as a result, he’s the target for the town bullies.
He ends up escaping those troubles, however, with his dad James (Michael Rapaport), as they employ their vivid imaginations to go on a number of incredible adventures. It’s not long though before the real world comes crashing down on them and Pepper’s father is drafted to fight in the war, leaving the young boy determined to end the conflict and bring his father home.

On April 24th, sappy, beautiful goodness is going to see if it can’t push through, and get your heart to grow three sizes in something like 90 minutes.
Little Boy, an inventive yarn in the grand tradition of just generally wild and impossible yarns, tells the story of a boy who just wants his father to come home from World War II, and really, really believes he can bring him back himself.
With an amazing cast, including: Emily Watson, Michael Rappaport, Tom Wilkinson, Jakob Salvati, and Ben Chaplin, and direction by Alejandro Monteverde (the fantastic, and woefully under-appreciated Bella), Little Boy is poised to be the surprise hit of early part of the year.
Make sure you check the trailer above, and mark your calendar.

For those of you looking for a little inspiration to brighten your life, here’s a trailer for a film called Little Boy, and it centers around faith. The film tells the inspirational story of a 7-year old boy who is “willing to do whatever it takes to end World War II so he can bring his father home. The story reveals the indescribable love a father has for his little boy and the love a son has for his father.”
The movie is obviously geared toward more of a Christian audience, but it looks better than most of those kinds of films that have been released. It also has a decent cast that includes Emily Watson, Tom Wilkinson, Michael Rapaport, and Kevin James. The little boy in the film, who has faith that can move mountains, is played by Jakob Salvati.

If films blatantly aimed at a Christian audience are your thing, then you're absolutely going to love this cheesy, melodramatic trailer for Little Boy. The film takes the phrase that "faith can move mountains" literally as a young boy believes he has some kind of mind powers to make things happen, like moving a mountain. What's interesting is that this film actually has a decent cast with Emily Watson, Tom Wilkinson, Michael Rapaport and Kevin James for some reason. They all surround Jakob Salvati as the title boy who just wants to bring his father home from World War II. This movie looks tailor made for people who see only the most tame family films in theaters, and that's just not my cup of tea at all. Watch? Here's the first trailer for Alejandro Monteverde's Little Boy from Open Road Films: Little Boy is directed by Alejandro Monteverde (Bella...

The notion that if you just believe in something hard enough, good things will happen and your dreams will come true, is a powerful one. It's a concept that has been peddled for decades in various packages and most recently caught the public imagination again with "The Secret." And now that idea gets a new spin in the movie "Little Boy," and the first trailer is here. Starring Jakob Salvati, Emily Watson, Michael Rapaport, Ben Chaplin, Tom Wilkinson, with Kevin James (yep, Paul Blart himself) in a small role, the movie tells the story of one plucky little boy who wishes with all his might to bring his dad back from the war. And he soon finds out he has enough faith to literally move mountains. Basically, this is a big sticky piece of Americana with a heartwarming message in the middle, told in a manner That The Whole Family Will Enjoy.

Tonight marks the season finale of Red Widow since ABC ordered just eight episodes of the series. Is this the end? Will the drama be back for a second season or will it be cancelled instead?
For those unfamiliar with the show, Red Widow revolves around a San Francisco housewife and mother who finds herself forced to continue her husband's work in organized crime after his death. The large cast includes Radha Mitchell, Clifton Collins Jr., Luke Goss, Sterling Beaumon, Suleka Mathew, Erin Moriarty, Jaime Ray Newman, Jakob Salvati, Lee Tergesen, Wil Traval, Rade Serbedzija, and Goran Visnjic.
Unfortunately, it doesn't look like we'll be seeing a second season renewal for Red Widow. The show's ratings were poor at the start -- debuting to a 1.5 demo rating with 7.13 million viewers -- and have gotten a lot worse as the weeks have worn on.

ABC hasn't had much luck Sundays at 10pm. Gcb was cancelled last year and 666 Park Avenue was dropped this season. Has the network found a winner in Red Widow or will it be rubbed out as well?

ABC's Zero Hour has already been cancelled due to terrible ratings. Will the network have better luck with Red Widow, their newest drama? Is it even worth watching?
Red Widow revolves around a suburban housewife and mom whose husband is killed after he steals from the Russian mob. The mobsters don't consider the debt paid however and the widow must now do their bidding -- while she tries to protect her children and dodge the FBI.
The show's cast includes Radha Mitchell, Clifton Collins Jr., Luke Goss, Sterling Beaumon, Suleka Mathew, Erin Moriarty, Jaime Ray Newman, Jakob Salvati, Lee Tergesen, Wil Traval, Rade Serbedzija, and Goran Visnjic.
Sound interesting? Sound kinda like Fox's (cancelled) Mob Doctor? Here's what some of the television critics think:

The Gospel of Matthew quotes Jesus as saying, in part, "All those who take up the sword shall perish by the sword."
But sometimes it's not so much a matter of taking up the sword as being taken up by it, in the form of circumstances beyond your control.
On Sunday, March 3, ABC premieres "Red Widow," executive produced and written by Melissa Rosenberg ("Dexter," the "Twilight" films) and adapted from the Dutch series "Penoza."
Radha Mitchell stars as Marta Walraven, a stay-at-home mom in Marin County, just north of San Francisco. She loves her three children, her husband, Evan (Anson Mount, "Hell on Wheels"), and the life he has built for them. But there's a rub -- this domestic bliss comes from what Marta believes is Evan's illegal trade in marijuana.
It's not a completely unfamiliar situation for Marta, since she is the daughter of Russian gangster Andrei Petrov (Rade Serbedzija). She and her sister,...

Terry O'Quinn as Gavin Doran in "666 Park Avenue" (ABC/Andrew Eccles)
ABC‘s slate of new shows for fall has a strange flavor to it, and it’s going to be a bumpy ride. The network has about as many new shows as returning ones (if you count all the midseasons), and a good percentage of the returning offerings are a year old or less, making this look a bit like a rebuilding year.
Not only is it a rebuilding year, but it’s the year of bringing back every actor and actress who ever had a decent run on a show before. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a network’s new season slate that was so crammed with people returning from something else. If you can’t make it good, I suppose, make sure viewers recognize the faces.
It’s tricky to get a solid feel...

[1] While Disney figures out [2] what it wants to do with The Lone Ranger, would-be star [3] Tom Wilkinson has entered negotiations for the indie Little Boy. Directed by Alejandro Monteverde, the historical family drama follows a developmentally disabled 8-year-old brother (newcomer Jakob Salvati) and his teenage brother (David Henrie). When the boys' father is sent off to fight in World War II, the boys must contend with the cruelty of their peers. Wilkinson will be joining a cast that includes Ben Chaplin and Emily Watson -- but not, apparently, previously announced [4] star Kevin James, whose name was mysteriously omitted from the Variety [5] story. While I'm happy to see Wilkinson board, I'll be disappointed if James really is out. I haven't been a huge fan of his previous roles, but I was actually looking forward to him trying something completely different with Little Boy. Shooting on the project began earlier this week...

Park Chan-wook will be making his English-language debut next year with Stoker, and he has a great lineup starring for him. Led by Mia Wasikowska, the Wentworth Miller-scripted film also stars Nicole Kidman, Matthew Goode, Alden Ehrenreich, Jackie Weaver, and Dermot Mulroney. The story focuses on India (Wasikowska), a young girl who loses her father, and how the appearance of her uncle, Charlie (Goode), makes things a little more sinister; Kidman is playing India’s mother.
BloodyDisgusting now reports that Phyllis Somerville has jumped on board the movie, playing “Mrs. Garrick,” the housekeeper of Goode‘s titular character. She’s not an actress who seems to have had a ton of starring roles, but she did leave a big impression in Little Children, where she played the mother to Jackie Earle Haley‘s character. Sometimes there's no way to make a casting roundup conform to any sort of sense. Such is the case here, as we've got info on a wild reality-based political thriller set in 1979, an animated sequel, and an indie family drama with a very unlikely cast. In other words, after the break you'll find info on: Monsters star Scoot McNairy joining Ben Affleck's Argo, Nick Frost and seven hundred other actors doing voices for the fourth theatrical Ice Age movie, and an indie called Little Boy, which has Kevin James and Emily Watson set to star. There was a point a few months ago where Scoot McNairy, one of the two leads of Gareth Edwards' film Monsters, was pegged [1] as the Next Big Thing, with a bunch of possible projects supposedly in the wings. That seemed to fizzle out a bit -- that report was perhaps a little PR...

"Wizards of Waverly Place" star David Henrie and Kevin James (Zookeeper) usually make us laugh but it sounds like they'll be making us cry soon in the family drama Little Boy. The movie is about an 8-year old (played by newcomer Jakob Salvati) with developmental issues whose only friend is his dad (James). When his dad has to leave to fight in World War II, the boy has to deal with vicious teasing and bullying from his classmates. Emily Watkins and Ben Chaplin, both of whom starred in The Water Horse, have also signed on for starring roles.
The film is set in "small-town America" but is being shot in Baja California and locations in Mexico. Toronto Film Festival prize winner Alejandro Monteverde is directing.
