There are 7,386 state lawmakers in the United States of America. Together, they’re responsible for more discretionary spending each year than the entire federal government. They are also, for the most part, total amateurs: inexperienced part-time elected officials, woefully underpaid and understaffed, vastly outnumbered by armies of lobbyists whose only objective is to influence them.
Jessie Ulibarri represented Colorado Senate district 21 from 2012 to 2016. “I was one of 100 state legislators: there were 35 senators, 65 house reps, and there were 600 registered lobbyists,” he says. Ulibarri’s office consisted of himself (paid a salary...

Exclusive: Kat Taylor & Tom Steyer’s TomKat MeDiA has unveiled its slate of social justice-themed projects for 2022. The multi-platform media company has secured rights to Duff Wilson’s eco-thriller Fateful Harvest and Aaron Bobrow-Strain’s award-winning work of narrative non-fiction, The Death and Life of Aida Hernandez, with plans to develop both as feature films.
Based on a Seattle Times investigative series reported by Wilson that was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize, Fateful Harvest is the riveting account of an alarming environmental scandal. Published in 2001, the book tells the story of Patty Martin — the mayor of a small Washington town called Quincy — who discovers American industries are dumping toxic waste into farmers’ fields and home gardens by labeling it “fertilizer.” She becomes outraged at the contaminated soil, failed crops, dead horses, and fatal, rare diseases in her town, as well as the direct threat to her own children’s health.

When University of Chicago scholars Michael Dawson and Rovana Popoff took a survey of American attitudes in 2000, they found that only four percent of white Americans endorsed black reparations. By 2016, a Marist Poll indicated that the proportion had increased to 15 percent. A 2018 survey taken by Data for Progress discovered that a slight majority of all voters under 45 supported black reparations. An April 2021 Washington Post-ABC News poll reported that close to 30 percent of white Americans now support black reparations.

“SNL” is back, now deep into its 46th season. The most recent new episode, which aired on Feb. 27, was hosted by Nick Jonas, who also acted as the musical guest. The cold open sketch saw cast member Aidy Bryant once again dress up as Ted Cruz for a game show in which contestants win the Covid-19 vaccine.
Since Donald Trump lost the election and is now all the way out of office, Alec Baldwin very well might be done playing Trump. He hasn’t appeared since the episode immediately after the election in November — he held up a little “Thank you” sign at the end of it.
But with Trump’s impeachment trial over — and once again making some TV appearances and speeches — it seems like it’s certainly possible he could pop back up on “SNL” at some point.
This week, on Saturday, March 6, there Will Not be a new episode of “SNL.

Two days after Disney announced some 28,000 layoffs in its U.S. parks business, chairman Bob Iger has resigned from California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s task force on the state’s economic recovery.
The Sacramento Bee reported this afternoon that Iger has quit the post, citing a Disney spokesperson. Deadline has reached out to the company for comment.
A week ago, Josh D’Amaro — the new chairman of Disney Parks, Experiences and Products — begged California officials to let Disneyland reopen and to “treat theme parks the way you treat other sectors.” On Monday, several state lawmakers sending a letter to Newsom this week requesting that he issue reopening guidelines for parks such as Disneyland, Universal Studios and Knott’s Berry Farm. Dr. Mark Ghaly, California’s top health official, said Tuesday in response to Monday’s letter: “We’re working hard to get that out in a responsible way as soon as possible.

Fox News Sunday anchor Chris Wallace, moderator of the season’s first presidential debate on September 29, has selected the six topics that President Donald Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden will face.
The topics are the Trump and Biden records, the Supreme Court, Covid-19, the economy, race and violence in our cities and the integrity of the election. The topics might not be in the order that they are listed.
The Commission on Presidential Debates said that the debate will feature six 15-minute segments, for a total of 90 minutes.
The first debate will take place at Case Western Reserve University and Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland.

Other speakers on Monday will include Bernie Sanders, but more notable are Republicans who will get a prime-time speaking slot: John Kasich, former governor of Ohio; Susan Molinari, former congresswoman from New York; Christine Whitman, former governor of New Jersey; and Meg Whitman, former CEO of Hewlett Packard and 2010 California gubernatorial candidate. Exclusive: California Gov. Gavin Newsom may see the state as mere days away from new guidelines to open up further from the coronavirus pandemic, but entertainment industry insiders are feeling broadsided by today’s announcement.

“We’ll look at the guidelines when they come out on Monday,” a spokesperson for the WGA West succinctly told Deadline of the upcoming Memorial Day plan from the Governor to enter the latest phase of reopening the Golden State’s battered economy.

Governor Gavin Newsom brought his Economic Recovery & Reinvention Listening Tour to Hollywood on Wednesday, virtually that is.
Newsom hosted a Zoom roundtable with Californians who work in the film and television industry. It started late but, once it got going, streamed live on the governor’s YouTube page.
“We’re in realtime drafting guidelines” for specific sectors, including the entertainment industry, said the governor.
Those guidelines will be released on Monday and will allow some counties to move deeper into the governor’s four-phase plan for reopening. Newsom made clear that this includes film and TV production. But it will not likely include Los Angeles.
“It remains a challenging part of the state for us still,” Newsom admitted, referring to L.A.

California’s Gov. Gavin Newsom announced on Friday the formation of an 80-person task force to develop economic recovery strategies amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic — and that group includes at least one or two well-known Hollywood executives.
Disney executive chairman Bob Iger and Apple CEO Tim Cook will participate in the task force, which will be co-chaired by billionaire investor and philanthropist Tom Steyer.
“We recognize that if we are going to learn anything from the past, it’s not to repeat the mistakes of the past and have a sustainable mindset, not just a situational mindset,” said Newsom in a press conference. “In terms of how we recover, it is in the ‘how’ we recover that I think ultimately we will be judged, and judge ourselves, and I think that is the spirit of the group of people and advisers we’ve put together.”

When CNN and Univision host the next Democratic presidential debate, it is likely to be a matchup of the two last remaining major candidates, Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders.
That’s because the Democratic National Committee on Friday released new qualification criteria for the next debate, set for March 15 in Phoenix. It requires that participants have at least 20% of all of the pledged delegates awarded from primaries and caucuses up to that point.
Tulsi Gabbard, the only other candidate remaining in the race, does not meet that criteria. She so far has only two delegates from American Samoa, which held its caucuses Tuesday.
Jake Tapper, Dana Bash and Jorge Ramos will moderate the next debate at Arizona Federal Theatre. It will be held in advance of the March 17 primaries in Illinois, Florida and Ohio. The debate is sanctioned by Chc Bold and the DNC.

Political advertising floods the airwaves every four years like clockwork. But this time around, two candidates alone — billionaires Mike Bloomberg and Tom Steyer — delivered an unprecedented $600 million gift to local TV stations during the past few months.
Bloomberg and Steyer together spent about $599.6 million in total TV advertising, according to Kantar/Cmag, which tracks political ad spending. That total includes coin shelled out for local spots on broadcast stations, cable and satellite TV platforms as well as national buys on broadcast and cable networks. The lion’s share of the spending flowed into the coffers of the largest broadcast groups with TV stations spread around the country, notably Nexstar Media, Sinclair Broadcast Group and Tegna.
“Broadcasters are definitely appreciative of the windfall they’ve had,” said Jason Wiese, senior VP and director of strategic insights for New York-based Vab, a trade association for media outlets that sell video-based advertising.

Farewell to Mike Bloomberg 2020, the Most Colossal Flop of a Presidential Campaign in Modern History
Washington — Mike Bloomberg took the stage in the early evening on Super Tuesday and made a bold assertion. No matter how the results shook out that night, he told his supporters, “we have done something no one else thought was possible.”

Joe Biden’s campaign debuted a last-minute campaign spot in Minneapolis on Super Tuesday, one that featured Amy Klobuchar endorsing Biden just after dropping out of the race. The last-minute ad speaks to the stakes involved in the 2020 presidential race.
Michael Bloomberg’s injection of hundreds of millions of dollars, coupled with the buys of another self-funder, Tom Steyer, who dropped out on Saturday, has changed the dynamics and shattered records for presidential primary spending, and has given TV stations a greater-than-expected boost in the early months of the year.
Last week, some of the largest station groups, including Nexstar Media Group, Gray Television and Sinclair Broadcast Group, reported their earnings and all highlighted political ad spending as bright spots, in some cases raising their revenue projections for the rest of the year.
Chris Ripley, the CEO of Sinclair, told analysts that “we expect 2020 to be our highest political revenue on record.

As Joe Biden enjoyed pre-Super Tuesday endorsements from former opponents Pete Buttigieg, Amy Klobuchar and Beto O’Rourke on Monday, he’s getting more celebrity endorsements and a big boost in showbiz fundraising.
Backers expect Biden will emerge as the more moderate alternative to Bernie Sanders, who himself has a long list of celebrities, musicians and industry creatives among his supporters. After a long campaign in which Hollywood has been spreading its support to multiple candidates or watching from the sidelines, the expectation is that Super Tuesday will provide some clarity of a Biden vs. Sanders race, if it hasn’t already.
Sherry Lansing, the philanthropist and former Paramount Pictures chairwoman, said interest in a fundraiser she is hosting for Biden at her home on Wednesday increased substantially since his blowout win in the South Carolina primary, a victory that was followed by the exits of Tom Steyer, Buttigieg and Klobuchar from the race.

Super Tuesday has led to a super amount of political TV advertising dollars being spent. The campaigns for the four main Democratic contenders left in the race — Bernie Sanders, Joe Biden, Elizabeth Warren and Michael Bloomberg — have spent more than $200 million in TV ads in the 14 states, according to data from Advertising Analytics, a company that tracks political campaign advertising. The 14 states heading to the polls Tuesday include California and Texas in what will be the largest single-day voting during the primary season. The other states are: North Carolina, Montana, Massachusetts, Colorado, Alabama, Tennessee, Virginia, Oklahoma, Utah, Arkansas, Maine and Vermont. Washington — At his final rally in South Carolina last Friday, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) made a plea to the boisterous crowd gathered to see him. “I’m asking you to bring out your friends and your coworkers and your neighbors,” Sanders said, “so we can have the largest voter turnout in the history of the South Carolina primary.”
Sanders isn’t alone. It’s a staple of the Democratic stump speech that voters must mobilize in historic numbers this year. Faced with an incumbent president whose supporters are dedicated to the point of fanaticism,...

Democratic Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar ended her presidential bid on Monday.
Klobuchar, who positioned herself as a Midwestern moderate, will endorse former Vice President Joe Biden at a rally in Dallas on Monday evening, according to her campaign.
The senator finished third in New Hampshire but she couldn’t establish more of what she called “Klomentum” in Saturday’s South Carolina primary, where she garnered only three percent of the vote and no delegates.
During the campaign, Klobuchar focused on her Midwest pragmatism, positioning herself as a Democrat who could garner moderate votes.

After skewering the clip of former presidential candidate Tom Steyer dancing with rapper Juvenile to his song “Back That Azz Up”, John Oliver did a deep dive into the coronavirus on Sunday night’s episode of Last Week Tonight and how the world — specifically Donald Trump — has been responding to the virus which is will more than likely spread across the world even more than it already has.
With confirmed deaths, stock markets plummeting and misinformation spreading like wildfire, there is a lot to unpack about coronavirus. First off, Oliver pointed out that you cannot get rid of the virus by gargling bleach — which is something people have been actually saying. More importantly, you cannot catch it by eating Chinese food, which is an ignorant claim.

Pete Buttigieg made history as the first openly gay presidential candidate to win a presidential nominating contest and after running a trailblazing campaign which included winning the race for delegates in Iowa, he announced that he would be dropping out of the race on Sunday.
As reported earlier, the news was revealed as Buttigieg was en route to his home court of South Bend, Indiana, where he served as that city’s mayor. When word got out that Buttigieg’s was bowing out, his fellow candidates kindly bid adieu to him and congratulated him on running a strong campaign.
“Thank you, @PeteButtigieg. I know you’ll continue giving back and serving our country for many years to come,” tweeted Elizabeth Warren.
Tom Steyer, who also recently dropped out of the race, added “@PeteButtigieg brought a fresh perspective and sense of optimism to the race. His call for inclusivity is laudable.

Not even bizarre pandering in the form of dancing onstage to Juvenile’s “Back That Azz Up” could save billionaire Tom Steyer’s presidential campaign. After placing third in the state’s primary on Saturday, with only 11 percent of the vote, Steyer announced he would suspend his campaign.

President Donald Trump offered congratulations and condolences in his tweetstorms over the last 24 hours. On the one hand, he saluted Joe Biden’s South Carolina primary victory. On the other, he shed some crocodile tears over the fates of billionaires Tom Steyer and Michael Bloomberg, who fared less well.
The Commander-in-Tweet has the luxury of sitting on the sidelines and observing the chaos of the Democratic primaries, where no clear frontrunners have emerged. He’s even looking ahead and musing whether the candidates who have or may drop out will support the party with donations, given their crash and burns. And he had some harsh words for “consultants” who are clearly the hogs at the trough when it comes to advice to the candidates.
The President did have one happy note, giving a shout-out to Sammy’s Mexican Grill in Phoenix. The proprietors have received backlash for supporting the President at a Feb.

Update: Joe Biden celebrated his blowout victory in South Carolina’s primary by taking a few shots at Bernie Sanders and Mike Bloomberg.
“If the Democrats want a nominee who is a Democrat, a lifelong Democrat, an Obama-Biden Democrat, a proud Democrat, then join us,” he said at a victory rally in Columbia, Sc.
Sanders is a Democratic socialist, and Bloomberg switched his party affiliation from independent to Democrat in 2018.
But Biden also singled out Sanders when he said that “most Americans don’t want the promise of revolution….They want results.”
“This is the moment to choose the path forward for our party. If Democrats nominate me, I believe we can beat Donald Trump,” Biden said.
In recent weeks it looked as if Biden was in danger of losing the state to Sanders, a scenario that likely would have ended his candidacy. Polls earlier this week still showed Sanders closing the gap with Biden.

Joe Biden has won the South Carolina Democratic presidential primary, marking the former Vice President’s first-ever state primary win despite two previous runs for the White House.
CNN reported that Biden commanded an easy win with about 49% of the vote. Current Democratic frontrunner Bernie Sanders (I-Vt) came in a distant second with about 20% of the vote. Tom Steyer, the California businessman who has spent millions of his own money on TV ads, placed third with about 11%. He is expected to drop out of the race soon, CNN reported.
Biden was the favorite going in to the Palmetto state’s contest, and he lived up to his reputation as a respected figure among African American voters. The former Vice President to Barack Obama was under pressure to deliver a decisive win in South Carolina to kickstart his flagging campaign effort.

CBS came out easily on top in the Tuesday night TV ratings race, thanks to the tenth Democratic debate of the election cycle.
Last night’s chaotic affair averaged around 15.3 million viewers, with ViacomCBS network Bet drawing 523,000 more. That makes it the third most watched debate of this cycle, behind two debates on NBC and MSNBC, the latter of which scored 19.7 million viewers, a record total for a Democratic debate. Ratings-wise, the debate scored a 3.4 in the key news demographic of adults aged 25-54.
None of the Democratic debates thus far in this cycle have come near to the 24 million viewership figure posted by Donald Trump’s first debate on Fox News in August of 2015.

Trevor Noah had a difficult time watching tonight’s “crazy” Democratic debate.

The video showed Sen. Bernie Sanders sniping at billionaire Tom Steyer; Steyer attacking former Vice President Joe Biden; Sen. Amy Klobuchar arguing with Biden over who wrote a crime bill; and Biden shouting at the CBS moderators: “I’m not over time. He spoke over time and I’m gonna talk!”
“Damn!” Noah quipped. “It was wild tonight. I haven’t seen white people go at each other that hard since khakis were on sale at Banana Republic.”

Days before the South Carolina primary and exactly a week before Super Tuesday, seven candidates — Michael Bloomberg, Pete Buttigieg, Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders, Joe Biden, Amy Klobuchar, and Tom Steyer — appeared on stage in South Carolina for the 10th Democratic presidential debate.
Candidates sustained their attacks on Bloomberg, and Sanders was also the focus of much criticism, something he’s largely avoided until now. But none of the candidates, including Bloomberg and Sanders, landed any real punches during the debate. It largely amounted to a recitation of prior criticisms and reiteration of stump speeches — though booing audience members made things lively more than once.
Here are four highlights from the evening:
1. Candidates go after Bernie Sanders: “I’m hearing my name mentioned a little bit tonight…”
Early into Tuesday’s debate, several candidates went on the attack against Senator Bernie Sanders, who recently notched a victory in the Nevada caucuses.
