British actor and filmmaker Sir Kenneth Branagh has been a Hollywood staple for years, between his adaptations of Shakespeare plays like 1993's "Much Ado About Nothing" and 1996's "Hamlet" and blockbuster projects like "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets," as well as the first "Thor" movie in 2021. He also won his first Academy Award in 2021 thanks to the autobiographical film "Belfast," which was based on his own childhood in the Northern Irish city during the Troubles. Branagh is clearly a curiously-minded and ambitious filmmaker and performer who's always looking for a new challenge, which might explain why, in 2017, he started adapting Agatha Christie's Hercule Poirot stories for the big screen.

Branagh kicked off this new project with "Murder on the Orient Express" that year and followed It up with two other Poirot stories, "Death on the Nile" and "A Haunting in Venice," which came out in 2022 and 2023, respectively.

Hannah Waddingham, Emmy winner for Apple TV Plus series “Ted Lasso,” is joining leads Solly McLeod and Sophie Wilde in the cast of Masterpiece and U.K. broadcaster ITV’s literary classic adaptation, “Tom Jones.”

Waddingham has been cast as the seductive and vengeful Lady Bellaston in the miniseries, which is currently filming in Northern Ireland.

Based on Henry Fielding’s classic 1749 novel “The History of Tom Jones, a Foundling,” the series follows the romantic and chivalrous adventures of adopted Tom Jones in 18th-century England.

Emmy winner Hannah Waddingham (Ted Lasso) has joined Solly McLeod and Sophie Wilde in the cast of Tom Jones, a miniseries reimagining of Henry Fielding’s classic novel The History of Tom Jones, A Foundling, for PBS’ Masterpiece, Mammoth Screen (Poldark) and ITV.

First published in 1749, Tom Jones is the scandalous tale of a young man’s attempt to find a place in the world. It is widely regarded as a British classic and has been adapted previously, most notably in the 1963 feature film version starring Albert Finney as the titular character.

Waddingham will play the seductive and vengeful Lady Bellaston.

She joins McLeod as the hero Tom, Wilde as the heroine Sophia Western and Pearl Mackie as Sophia’s trusted maid, Honour.

Cast also includes James Fleet, Alun Armstrong, Shirley Henderson, Tamzin Merchant, Julian Rhind-Tutt, Susannah Fielding, Daniel Rigby, James Wilbraham, Felicity Montagu, Janine Duvitski Dean Lennox Kelly and Lucy Fallon.

Steadman is joined by Peter Davison, who starred as the Doctor in the fifth iteration of Doctor Who, Adrian Lester (Riviera), Victoria Hamilton (Doctor Foster) and Rachael Stirling (The Bletchley Circle) in the six-part series.

The Drama Republic-fronted series, which has just begun filming in Manchester, follows the stories of the residents in a large house in Manchester divided into flats. As each of the four separate, relatable yet surprising strands unfold, they tell a larger story about what happens when we decide to step out of our own personal space and take a closer look into other people’s lives.

Gail, played by Steadman, who is married to Henry, played by Davison, is about to celebrate her 70th birthday when a chance encounter throws her whole life into question.

Johnny English Strikes Back and Paddington 2 star Ben Miller has joined the cast of ITV psychological drama The Man.

Miller will star alongside Christopher Robin and Killing Eve star Ken Nwosu in the three-part bullying drama, which was created by Doctor Foster and Press creator Mike Bartlett.

Also joining the cast are Sean Sagar (Top Boy), Susannah Fielding (Black Mirror), Gwilym Lee (Bohemian Rhapsody), Phoebe Nicholls (Downton Abbey), Ritu Ayra (Humans), Alexandra Roach (Black Mirror), Michael Cochrane (The Archers) and Debbie Chazen (Doctor Who).

Last August, Steve Coogan revealed he was writing a new Alan Partridge series for the BBC, and we had word last week that production had begun on 6 new half-hour episodes, that are set to air later on this year. Yes, a quarter-century after he first appeared on the Beeb, Partridge will return in This Time With Alan Partridge.

The fact that CBS’s newest comedy, The Great Indoors, airs after the network’s longest-running, mega-hit The Big Bang Theory bodes well for the freshman comedy’s potential to gain some kind of an audience. It’s stocked with fine actors from a collection of other well-known shows and movies, it’s got a decent workplace comedy premise, and series creator Mike Gibbons (Tosh.0) at least knows how to wrangle together the show’s quirky cast into something resembling a neighborhood in the vicinity of charming.

Yet, it’s an effort to make it through just the 20-minute pilot. Many listable reasons throw themselves onto the rails that is the eventual train wreck of The Great Indoors, all acceptable excuses for changing the channel until Mom comes on, or maybe just turning off the TV completely and discovering these mythical “outdoors” that...

Given its perception as an older-skewing network, it’s hardly a shock that it would be CBS day at the Television Critics Association press tour which highlighted the disconnect between generations — and just how damaging that might be to the show’s odds, and television in general.

The upcoming Joel McHale sitcom “The Great Indoors” features the former “Community” star as a “Generation X” outdoorsman whose return to civilization puts him in close contact with a group of “Millennials.” Putting these generational labels in quotes is a deliberate choice because of how often the terms get thrown around — not just in the pilot, but in general discussion of the show. The show’s portrait of those born roughly between 1982 to 1995 features a lot of jokes about PC culture and social media, with the under-30 cast largely portrayed as “coddled.”

Though it doesn’t feature alternate timelines or extensive meta humor, CBS’ upcoming The Great Indoors comedy rang a few Greendale bells for star Joel McHale.

The workplace comedy, which follows McHale’s outdoor-magazine reporter character as he transitions to a job in the publication’s millenial-run digital department, is “a big sandbox,” McHale told an audience Wednesday at the Television Critics Association summer press tour. “That’s how I felt about Community when I first read it.”

CBS is ready to jumpstart its fall season with a paper clip, rubber band, and lighter.

The network has ordered six new shows, including a reboot of the 1980s action series "MacGyver" and an adaptation of the movie "Training Day." The new shows also include comedies with big names as headliners: Matt LeBlanc and Joel McHale.

CBS has a lot of holes to fill in its schedule this fall. "The Good Wife" ended, "CSI: Cyber" was canceled (leaving the network without a "CSI" series for the first time in 16 years), and "Supergirl" is moving to The CW.

Here's a rundown of all the new CBS shows:

Bull

Synopsis: A drama inspired by the early career of Dr. Phil McGraw as the founder of one of the most prolific trial consulting firms of all time.

CBS is enlisting MacGyver to help fortify its 2016-2017 schedule.

The much-hyped reboot was one of four dramas the Eye network ordered to series on Friday, joining Jerry Bruckheimer’s Training Day remake, the Michael Weatherly-fronted Bull, and Jason Katims’ medical entry Pure Genius (fka Bunker Hill).

On the comedy side, CBS has Ok’d Joel McHale’s workplace sitcom The Great Indoors and Matt LeBlanc’s family satire Man With a Plan (fka I’m Not Your Friend). Speaking of the latter, The Office‘s Jenna Fischer — who was set to play LeBlanc’s wife — has exited the project for creative reasons.

Susannah Fielding (4.3.2.1) is set as a series regular opposite Joel McHale and Stephen Fry on The Great Indoors, CBS’ multi-camera pilot written and executive produced by Mike Gibbons. The comedy, from CBS TV Studios, centers on Joel (McHale), an adventure reporter who must adapt to the times when he becomes boss to a group of millennials in the digital department of their magazine. Film directors and their crew discuss the techniques and approaches to capturing fruitiness on the big (and small) screen...

John Badham has written a couple of excellent books where he passed on advice about directing movies, and the lessons he's learned across his own career. In the latest, John Badham On Directing, he raises the spectre of filming sex scenes, and the problems that ensue.

Actors get really spooked when it comes to intimacy in a scene, even kissing", he wrote. "This is where the director has to be extremely patient with the actors and know that the emotional or intimate part of scenes don’t always shoot as easily as the production department thinks they should. The actors are not robots on a Toyota assembly line".

But just how do different filmmakers approach putting intimacy on film? In lots of different ways, is the answer...

Noel Clarke...

EastEnders actress Hetti Bywater will appear in an episode of Death in Paradise.

The actress will make her first TV appearance since leaving the BBC One soap as Lucy Beale in the upcoming fourth series of the crime drama starring Kris Marshall.

Will Mellor, Outnumbered star Tyger Drew-Honey, Strictly Come Dancing runner-up Natalie Gumede and Downton Abbey's Amy Nuttall will also make appearances.

Filming has begun in Guadeloupe for the fourth series, with Sara Martins and Danny John-Jules also returning as Camille and Dwayne.

However, Gary Carr has reportedly left the show as Fidel, after the character left Saint Marie for a new job, and will be replaced by Josephine Jobert as Florence Cassell. Don Warrington is expected to play a larger role as Commander Selwyn.

Soon to depart "Doctor Who" star Matt Smith is about to tackle a distinctly different character - Patrick Bateman.

Smith is set to star as Bateman in a West End stage musical adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis' controversial novel "American Psycho" which will run from December 3rd to January 25th.

He begins rehearsals today for a production that includes several dance numbers and songs.

Almeida Theatre Artistic Director Rupert Goold will direct from a production book by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa ("Spider Man: Turn Off The Dark") and music and lyrics by Duncan Sheik ("Spring Awakening").

Also starring are some notable British stage and TV actors like Ben Aldridge, Charlie Anson, Jonathan Bailey, Katie Brayben, Cassandra Compton, Holly Dale Spencer, Susannah Fielding, Simon Gregor, Holly James, Lucie Jones, Tom Kay, Gillian Kirkpatrick, Eugene McCoy and Hugh Skinner.

The serial-killing 1980s Wall Street investment banker character was previously portrayed by Christian Bale in the 2000 film adaptation.

Donmar Warehouse, London

Best known for movies such as Atonement and Anna Karenina, Joe Wright has finally got round to directing his first play, and, appropriately, he has chosen Pinero's warm-hearted tribute, written in 1898, to the theatrical medium itself. But, while it makes a perfectly amiable evening, Wright can't help pushing Pinero's faithful re-creation of a past theatrical age to the edge of caricature.

Pinero's play deals with class, change and the enduring power of theatre. It starts by showing Rose Trelawny, the darling of 1860s Sadler's Wells, quitting the stage to marry into the gentry. But once ensconced in Cavendish Square, where she's very much on trial with her fiance's grandfather and great-aunt, she's appalled by the stifling tyranny of upper-class life. Sacrificing her lover, she goes back to the boards only to find her talent has evaporated. Her one hope would seem to lie with an emerging playwright,...

Arriving in theatres in the UK and Ireland tomorrow, The Knot sees Noel Clarke (Kidulthood, Storage 24) starring alongside an excellent cast, headed up by Mena Suvari (American Pie), Matthew McNulty (Misfits), and Talulah Riley (Pride & Prejudice).

Jesse Lawrence is making his feature directorial debut, and ahead of the film’s release, three inter-linked red-band trailers have been released to give you a taste of what to expect.

Duke of York's, London

A study of personal discontent, written by and starring the American actor Zach Braff, All New People gets under way with a visual gag about suicide. Silent, delicate, funny, it's a last moment of calm for some time – soon characters are running around and falling over, spilling drinks, throwing crisps. When the farce eventually simmers down, a tight, touching comedy emerges.

Braff plays Charlie, whose bid to theatrically hang himself in a New Jersey beach house is ruined by the staggered arrival of three strangers: Emma (Eve Myles), an expat Brit employed to rent out the space; Myron (Paul Hilton), a suitor to Emma; and Kim (Susannah Fielding), a call girl hired to buck up Charlie's spirits. Charlie wants rid of everyone, but soon he's unpicking melancholy disclosures, offering some too.

Braff gifts the best lines to the others. Emma is chomping antidepressants, cheap and unbranded.

Thanks to the TV series Scrubs and the film Garden State, Zach Braff clearly enjoys cult status in Britain. His first appearance in his own play, All New People, is greeted by his young fans with a whoosh of delight, abruptly terminated by the fact that he is perched on a chair trying to hang himself. But what promises to be a savagely black comedy turns into a muddled, meandering affair that reeks of self-gratification.

Braff's character, Charlie, is a suicidal thirtysomething intent on ending his life in a friend's deserted beach house in midwinter. But his plans are thwarted by a succession of visitors. First comes Emma, a gabby British estate agent hoping to rent the property. Confronted by a potential suicide, Emma sends for her mate Myron, who is the drug-dispensing local fire chief.
