Australia's doctors call for overhaul of 'sick care' system
Image
Canberra, June 14 (Ians) Australia’s peak doctors’ body on Wednesday called for a comprehensive overhaul of the nation’s healthcare system to place greater emphasis on preventative care.

In a speech to the National Press Club on Wednesday, Australian Medical Association (Ama) president Steve Robson said that leaders must reconsider how they think about healthcare investment, reports Xinhua news agency.

He described the current system as one of “sick care” rather than one focused on keeping Australians well, increasing pressure on hospitals.

According to Robson, a significant boost in spending on preventative care would reap in benefits for the economy.

The speech coincided with the release of a new Ama report showing that public hospital elective surgery waiting lists cost the Australian economy A$4.6 billion ($3.1 billion) annually.

The report highlights the growing rate of chronic disease, with almost half the population in the country having one or more chronic diseases...

'Too early' to scrap mandatory Covid isolation in Aus
Image
Canberra, Oct 7 (Ians) The Australian Medical Association (Ama) on Friday said it was “too early” to end the mandatory Covid-19 isolation periods, warning that it would trigger another wave of the pandemic.

Federal, state and territory leaders late in September agreed to end mandatory isolation requirements for Covid-19, which will come into effect on October 14, with each jurisdiction implementing the change via relevant public health legislation, reports Xinhua news agency.

Commenting on the decision, Ama President Steve Robson said he was “very concerned” about another wave.

“All the signs are that we’re looking at another wave of Covid,” he told local media.

“We’re coming out of one of the biggest waves of Covid yet and it has absolutely crushed hospital workforce and left us with a massive logjam and backlog in hospitals at the moment that has to be dealt with.

“If we have another wave over the holiday season,...

Brett Eldredge’s ‘Sunday Drive’ Video Will Make You Cry
Image
Life is a blink. One minute you’re in the backseat of your parents’ car, being driven for ice cream, and the next you’re taking care of your folks, ushering them into the car to take them to some appointment or another. That’s the message of Brett Eldredge’s music video for “Sunday Drive,” the title track of his latest album.

The video casts Eldredge as the narrator, playing an upright piano on a deserted road in his native Illinois, while actors depict the lyrical arc. It’s...

Christina Aguilera
Christina's Latest: Not Great, Not Horrible
Christina Aguilera
-- Christina Aguilera, "Lotus" (RCA Records)

Christina Aguilera is easily one of contemporary music's best voices. She's got pipes that music-lovers need to hear at a time when Top 40 radio features studio-enhanced vocals and award shows are full of lip syncing. That's why her fifth album, "Lotus," is somewhat disappointing – not because it isn't good, but because it isn't great.

Sure, it's an improvement from 2010's "Bionic," a chaotic album that is Aguilera's only one not to reach platinum status. "Lotus" is more focused, thankfully, but not as satisfying as her first three releases.

The new 13-track album is the singer's first music offering since she filed for divorce two years ago. And when she's emotional, she sounds best.

The title track kicks off the album nicely as Aguilera sings about starting over. On "Best of Me," she sings: "Words cut through my skin, tears roll down my chin, my walls crumble within.

Olly Murs discusses debut album
Olly Murs in Nikki & Sara Live (2013)
Olly Murs has revealed that he has finished recording his debut album - but has yet to decide on the final tracklisting. The 26-year-old singer, who finished second on last year's X Factor, has earmarked ten songs for the as-yet-untitled LP, but "seven or eight other tracks" are also in contention. Murs co-wrote the album's lead single 'Please Don't Let Me Go', with songwriters Steve Robson, who has worked with Take That and Leona Lewis, and Claude Kelly, who has written hits for Britney Spears and Kelly Clarkson. However, he collaborated with an extensive palette of songwriters and producers across the record as a whole. "Two songs were given to me late in the process - two big ballads - that I just couldn't turn down because they're so amazing, but apart from that I co-wrote pretty much everything," (more)...
