Quentin Tarantino has often faced criticism for a gratuitous use of the N-word in his films.
Pam Grier, star of Tarantino’s third film, 1997’s “Jackie Brown,” shot down the notion Tarantino was at fault, saying during a SiriusXM appearance Thursday that if anyone was to blame, it was Samuel L. Jackson — or moreso, his characters.
“That was Sam’s acting craft doing it,” Grier told show host Bevy Smith. “So, and people brought that up. And Quentin says, ‘I don’t know why they do it. I didn’t do it.’ And Sam said, ‘No, I did it. I said it.'”

Babyface is weighing in on the King of R&b debate.
The musician joined Bevy Smith this week on SiriusXM’s Bevelations, where she mentioned that Usher had been on the show and was willing to take the crown.
Babyface responded, “It’s interesting. When you say king, what makes you king? Is it how many hits that you have or is it how many people you touch?
“You know, how many people that you give that feeling to where when they think of home, they think of R&b, and that you take them and you make them feel good.
“R&b’s a really hard one to figure out like a king of, even when we picked the King of Pop. And when Michael picked the King of Pop… it was overwhelming with the hits that he had and the songs that he had.
“So it’s just a little overwhelming.

As “The Wendy Williams Show” prepares to close out its current 13th season with Sherri Shepherd seated in the signature purple chair, TheWrap has learned producers are moving forward without input from the show’s namesake host, Wendy Williams.
“She’s currently not involved with the show in any way,” an individual close to Williams told TheWrap.
The individual confirmed Williams won’t return for the current season and added, “Next season is up in the air depending on her health.”
This latest turn comes as Shepherd moves closer to finalizing a deal to take over as permanent guest host on the syndicated daytime talk show.
Williams has been on medical leave throughout the current season after suffering a breakthrough case of Covid-19 as well as complications from a previous diagnosis of Graves’ disease.

Wendy Williams will not be returning to her daytime talk show this season, but the future of her show remains in flux, Variety has learned.
Meanwhile, Sherri Shepherd is in advanced discussions with Lionsgate’s Debmar-Mercury for her own daytime talk show, which could potentially replace Williams’ series, sources say.
Currently in its 13th season, “The Wendy Williams Show” is one of the biggest hits in daytime TV history. Launching in national syndication from Debmar-Mercury in 2008, the show was built around Williams, who, at the time the show premiered, was a popular radio host known for her no-holds-barred take on celebrity gossip.
Williams has been absent from her show all this season, as she has been battling ongoing health issues. Williams suffers from Graves’ disease, an autoimmune disorder.

Sherri Shepherd is finalizing a deal to become a permanent host on The Wendy Williams Show, sources tell Deadline. A rep for the syndicated daytime talk show’s producer, Lionsgate’s Debmar-Mercury, declined comment.
Along with fellow actor Michael Rapaport, Shepherd emerged as the lead guest hosts on the show, filling in on a regular basis for Williams since the beginning of the 13th season as the veteran talk show host took time off to recover from a variety of health issues.
This would mark Shepherd’s return to being a full-time daytime talk show host following her stint as co-host of The View.
The news of Shepherd’s pending deal for The Wendy Williams Show, which will likely be renamed, comes as major station groups solidify their daytime lineups for next season. The Wendy Williams Show, which is expected to be renamed, has been a staple on the Fox stations from its inception.

Harlem is a vibrant and multicultural community, so it's fitting that the cast of Harlem matches that same energy. Some criticism of the Amazon Prime series drew from the fact that none of the four leading actors are members of that community. While Shoniqua Shandai was born in New York City, she was raised in Richmond, Virginia. After the U.S. Supreme Court on Wednesday night denied a request to issue emergency relief blocking Texas’ new law that bans abortion at six weeks and, say opponents, effectively eliminates access to abortions statewide, some big names in entertainment expressed their opinions about the legislation.
A group of prominent actors, musicians and other artists and companies swiftly responded to the news on social media. Director George C. Wolfe highlighted the kindness of the late Chadwick Boseman during Tuesday night’s Celebration of Black Cinema event. Wolfe recalled a moment while shooting “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” when all eyes were on 17-year-old actor Dusan Brown, who played Sylvester.
Co-stars Boseman and Viola Davis as well as producer Denzel Washington were all watching.
“[Dusan’s] nervousness took over and he was starting to freak out…Chadwick pulled him aside and said, ‘We are here for you. We are here to support you. This is your moment, and that’s why all of us are here.’ What an astonishing, incredible, generous thing for someone to do for another actor,” Wolfe said. “That was Chadwick. He was so present, not just as an actor, but present as a human being.”

Cicely Tyson gave several interviews in the days before her death, timed to the release Tuesday of her memoir “Just As I Am”. She most recently spoke with Kelly Ripa and Ryan Seacrest on Live with Kelly and Ryan on Wednesday, one day before she died at the age of 96. The episode was pre-taped and aired this morning.
“To say Cicely Tyson was an American legend would be too great an understatement,” Ripa said in a special tribute to Tyson at the top of the show. “We were honored to speak with her … and devastated to learn of her passing. She was a trailblazer who broke barriers for Black actresses and women everywhere. Cicely was a portrait of courage, dignity and grace. We feel very fortunate to share with you her last interview.”
Ripa began the interview by asking Tyson about a prediction a stranger made about her when she was a baby.

Bevy Smith is opening up in her new memoir “Bevelations: Lessons From a Mutha, Auntie, Bestie.” And it’s the perfect companion to start off a new year. The book, to be released on Jan. 12 (and published by Andy Cohen‘s imprint with Henry Holt & Co.), documents her transformation in her late 30s from a magazine advertising exec — she was a powerhouse at Vibe and Rolling Stone — to a television and pop culture personality. “I think the main ‘bevelation’ of the book is it gets greater later,” Smith tells me during a Zoom call from her Harlem apartment. “I want people to understand that no matter what your age is, and no matter what your circumstances are, you have the ability to chase your passions and to dare to dream. You really do.”

Leading the list of honorees for the Critics Choice Association’s third annual Celebration of Black Cinema are Delroy Lindo receiving the Career Achievement Award, John Legend and Mike Jackson as Producers of the Year, Tessa Thompson winning the Actors Award, recent Emmy winner Yahya Abdul-Mateen II for the Breakthrough Award, Andra Day as a Special Honoree, and the cast of Amazon Studios’ One Night in Miami taking the Ensemble Award. The virtual ceremony will take place on Tuesday, February 2, and will be hosted by author and media personality Bevy Smith.
The event will also showcase a series of powerful photographs captured by Black filmmaker Tommy Oliver around Los Angeles in the wake of the murder of George Floyd. Oliver utilized his platform as a multi-hyphenate visual artist to channel the energy of the protests, seeking to inspire, incite, and challenge those who would see the final images.

Derek Hough may have moved on from “Dancing with the Stars,” but he too was stunned about Tom Bergeron‘s and Erin Andrews‘ sudden exits from the series.
“I was pretty shocked,” Hough told Bevy Smith on Tuesday’s “Bevelations” on SiriusXM (listen below). “I think Tom Bergeron is such a staple of ‘Dancing with the Stars, and he’s a good friend of mine. He’s just a good man. He’s been there from the beginning, and you know he’s just a great guy.”
Bergeron and Andrews were dropped from the show on July 13 amid a revamp to take it in a “new creative direction.” Tyra Banks was announced as the new host and executive producer the next day.
While Hough, who left “Dancing” in 2016 after 17 seasons and a record six wins, was surprised by the shake-up, he also knows that it’s part of the fickle nature of showbiz.

During an appearance on Bevy Smith’s SiriusXM show, “Bevelations,” Tyler Perry revealed that, in 2019, he’s planning a farewell stage tour and film: “Tyler Perry’s a Madea Family Funeral” will mark the end of the character upon which his media empire was built. “It’s time for me to kill that old bitch,” he said. “I’m tired, man. “I’m happy to kill that old bitch, I’m tired, man,” Perry said on Bevy Smith’s SiriusXM show “Bevelations” on Monday. “I just don’t want to be her age, playing her.”
He also said on the program that his team finished shooting the film two years ago, but wanted to stagger its release following 2016 and 2017’s Madea Halloween films. Perry also wanted to focus on other projects like “Acrimony,” released earlier this year, and “Nobody’s Fool,” which will be out Nov.

“This is it,” Perry told SiriusXM radio host Bevy Smith on her show “Bevelations” on Monday. “It’s time for me to kill that old bitch. I’m tired!”

The New York Post has launched a new entertainment division focused on scripted and unscripted television.
Veteran TV producer Troy Searer has joined the news organization as president of New York Post Entertainment. He will oversee efforts to develop projects for cable, streaming, broadcast and emerging platforms, tapping into the Post’s store of intellectual property and its newsroom resources.
“It’s a real opportunity,” Jesse Angelo, CEO and publisher of the Post, told Variety. “There is so much hunger for original television content for differentiated IP, for storytellers that have voice, and we have those things. We were able to show some success with ‘Page Six TV’ and show that we could swim in these waters, and we wanted to take it to the next level. We have a couple other deals in development, a couple other projects that we’re working on, and I just realized the time...

Page Six TV, the half-hour daily syndicated program focused on pop culture, has upped Bevy Smith, Elizabeth Wagmeister and Carlos Greer to co-hosts for the show’s upcoming second season.
When Page Six TV launched last fall with the Fox O&Os as a core station group, it featured John Fugelsang as host and Smith, Wagmeister and Greer as a panel of “insiders.” After the series was renewed for a second season in January by the Fox station group, it was announced that Fugelsang would not be coming back. Over the past few months, the show tested various guest hosts. It scored best with episodes featuring only Smith, Wagmeister and Greer, which led to the decision to make them co-hosts. The setup of the program is expected to be tweaked, with the trio sitting instead of standing. Page Six Editor Emily Smith and Deputy Editor Ian Mohr will continue as contributors.
