We’re still in the process of developing and growing Daily Dead, so while I’d love to be able to review every single film sent my way, there is not enough time in the day to get everything done. However, I am watching new horror films regularly and wanted to offer my impressions on a number of recently released titles.
This will be my first impressions or mini-review feature and I’m planning on testing the waters with it over the next few months. For the first feature, I’m covering three “survival” movies: [Rec] 3 Genesis, Dead Season, and The Collapsed.
[Rec] 3: Genesis
Director Paco Plaza intentionally set out to create a movie that felt very different from the first two [Rec] films. The found footage elements are mostly removed and we’re presented with a romantic horror film that is carried by Leticia Dolera’s performance.

Some directors just have it. They take what shouldn't work and breathe new life into it. That's exactly what writer / director Justin McConnell did with his post-apocalyptic thriller The Collapsed. When I opened up the envelope and saw it was another grim look at our destroyed Earth, I put up a mental wall and said to myself, "Another one of these movies?"
The movie revolves around a family making their way to the town where they once lived. The parents' oldest son still lives there and they want to make sure he is still alive after an apocalyptic event knocks out all communications and wipes out most of civilization. They find themselves running for their lives through the forest while being hunted by two things: armed scavengers they can see and an unseen force that follows them at a distance but won't reveal itself.

Canadian filmmaker Justin McConnell shot The Collapsed for only $40,000 and the movie was picked up for distribution by Anchor Bay Entertainment. The film was released on DVD this week and I caught up with Justin to talk about the making of The Collapsed. I also learned about future projects and he shared advice for independent filmmakers who are looking to attract distributors:
While many independent horror films tend to go the slasher route, The Collapsed takes a slower approach and is a more character driven film. What made you decide to go this route for your first film?
Justin McConnell: We knew going into this that we had a small budget. We shot it for $40,000 and we knew that if we wanted to have a lot of gore and non-stop action that it would not look good with the limited budget and time. From the beginning, we wrote it...

Low budget but surprisingly well put together horror-thriller from Canada sees a family of four . mother, father, daughter and son . fleeing Toronto as the end-of-the-world takes place around them. An unseen force is causing the population to start randomly murdering one another and it.s turned the cities into nightmarish war zones. After boosting a car the group makes their way into the forest with the plan of hiking to safety, but their troubles are only just beginning. Justin McConnell.s feature debut is a nuts-n-bolts thriller with broadly decent acting and effects; it.s nothing amazing but certainly passes the time and takes a few surprising risks in its plotting and twist ending.
We begin with a bank of television screens showing stock footage of rioting and police brutality, as...

The Collapsed is a Canadian produced thriller released May 27th, 2011 theatrically. This title has also moved to certain cable providers (June 10th) and director Justin McConnell's first feature film is not without its flaws. However, there is a lot to enjoy in The Collapsed. One of the more interesting elements is the post-apocalyptic landscape in which the film is set. As well, the genre of psychological thriller is one, which if done right, creates tension amongst characters while balancing opposing forces of dark and light. The Collapsed gets many of the broad strokes correct, but some of the tension is reduced by a predictable plotline.

As well, the genre of psychological thriller is one, which if done right, creates tension amongst characters while balancing opposing forces of dark and light. The Collapsed gets many of the broad strokes correct, but some of the tension is reduced by a predictable plotline.
A family of four begins in a ruined urban setting, as the father, Scott Weaver (John Fantasia...

A family heads out to the country to escape the madness of the city as the world falls victim to a devastating force that is killing off everyone, but are they any safer? Has this force followed them? And could could that be the least of their problems as they have to fight off ordinary citizens who have turned into crazed killers?
Intriguing film where the story feels more like the sub-plot in a bigger film, but it still has enough interesting and unique story tangents to make for satisfying entertainment. The Collapsed starts out a little slow, but once The Collapsed gets going, it doesn't let up. The most admirable quality is that The Collapsed doesn't play it safe. The Collapsed takes risks and makes bold moves that result in...

Anyone who has a passing interest in post-apocalyptic motion pictures would do well to thoroughly investigate the first trailer for Justin McConnell’s promising indie feature “The Collapsed”, which, according to Quiet Earth, is being presented at this year’s American Film Market. The story concerns itself with a family of four as they attempt to return home after the proverbial “end of the world”. And while this premise may sound brutally familiar to those of us who frequent these productions, the clip nestled below certainly seems to suggest that McConnell knows exactly what he’s doing. “The Collapsed”, which stars John Fantasia, Steve Vieira, Anna Ross, Lise Moule, and Vincent Thomas, will hopefully see the light of day sometime next year. function getVideo() { var so = new SWFObject("http://cdn.springboard.gorillanation.com/storage/xplayer/yo033.swf", "mplayer", "590", "375", "8", "#000000"); so.addParam("wmode","transparent"); so.addParam("swliveconnect", "true"); so.addParam("allowscriptaccess", "always"); so.

As evidence of the sad reality that financing for independent projects is getting harder and harder to come by, director/producer Justin McConnell of Canadian company Unstable Ground has informed us that production of his upcoming horror film The Eternal has been postponed until 2011. However, that's not stopping McConnell from proceeding with a slightly less ambitious film: The lower budget horror/thriller The Collapsed begins shoots in Toronto during August-September, 2010.
With regard to The Eternal (click here for more info), McConnell says, "The Dtv market is close to dead, and The Eternal as packaged, with the budget and cast that we have attached, is too much of a risk for most investors, given the economy. It’s difficult to get an original independent film budgeted between $2-$3 million off the ground without A-list attachment; therefore, we’re going to rework the project to target a lower production budget and continue to move forward.
