Overlong and erratically paced, Brendan Kyle Cochrane’s New York City-based “Equal Standard” opens with a self-conscious scene that heavy-handedly hints at an impending tragedy. There in the sun-dappled kitchen of the happy Jones family, Detective Chris (Tobias Truvillion), Sergeant Jackie (Syleena Johnson) and their adorable daughter lovingly go about their rosy morning routine, while an over-sentimental score embellished with stark notes of caution (one of the film’s various recurring motifs of unsubtlety) accompanies the perfect picture. As the doting husband and wife exchange their daily goodbyes before taking off for their high-risk professions, there is so much weight and emphasis placed on the concerned Jackie when she says “Be safe” that you prophetically know Chris is soon going to need that advice.

The Isley Brothers have enlisted Snoop Dogg for their first new song in four years, “Friends and Family.”
“Friends and Family” is a breezy party-starter with a thumping bass groove and some slick guitar work from Ernie Isley. The track finds Ronald Isley celebrating the most important things in life — “Although we didn’t have much we still had each other,” he croons, “And what we went through, we went through it together/We stick together through thick or thin/I thank God for family and all my day one friends!

Grammy-nominated R&B recording artist and reality star Syleena Johnson doesn't have memories of an idyllic childhood. Growing up, Johnson recalls being cursed at and bullied by her own mother. Though Johnson is now an adult with children of her own, her painful past has continued to affect her volatile relationship with her mom, Brenda Thompson, who now lives with Johnson. The family is at a breaking point.
So, Johnson called relationship expert Iyanla Vanzant to help her repair her relationship with her mother. In the above video from "Iyanla: Fix My Life," Iyanla sits down with Johnson to talk about her childhood experiences. Johnson tells her, "My mom cusses at us. She would call us b*tches and h*es, stuff like that."
Iyanla asks Johnson what she thinks she did to make her mother speak to her like that. Johnson says, "I used to hide all the time.

R&B recording artist and reality star Syleena Johnson hasn't had a good relationship with her mother, Brenda Thompson. As a child, Syleena says her mother called her names and bullied her, and now, as an adult, the lingering resentment and hurt has made moving on next to impossible. Still, Syleena invited her mother to live with her when Brenda began struggling with alcohol again and the family dynamic has since gone from bad to worse.
Enter Iyanla Vanzant. On the season premiere of "Iyanla: Fix My Life," Iyanla travels to Georgia to help Syleena work through her pain and begin to mend her relationship with Brenda. In the above video from the episode, Iyanla has the women sit down to talk about their issues face-to-face.
Syleena begins by admitting her fear. "I don't want anyone to know that I'm scared because... I feel that that's a weakness," she says.

Phew, was there a lot that went down in this week’s episode! Some good, some bad, some drama filled, some hopeful. I can’t believe there’s already been six episodes this season—it feels like we’re only getting started! But this episode also felt like a turning point of where things might be headed for the rest of the season.
We begin with everyone minus Syleena and Faith gathering at Monifah’s apartment, to help fill in Angie Stone and Latocha about how "Divas Simply Singing" went down last week. When Angie hears about the divas coming on stage to support Nicci during her breakdown, she once again is moved by a “we can do this tour as sisters” spirit. She says, “I firmly believe women can work together.” Hallelujah.
We then move on to Syleena, who’s at a gym where...

You guys. This episode. Oh lawd, just prepare yourself for this episode.
It begins in the Atl where all the divas meet for lunch. Faith informs the group that they’ve been invited by Sheryl Lee Ralph (of the original broadway cast of Dreamgirls) to all perform at "Divas Simply Singing," a benefit concert in La for raising HIV/AIDS awareness which is going on its 22nd year. While Latocha and Angie Stone can’t make it, all of the original divas are on board and begin packing their bags. And when I say packing their bags, we’re talking clothes, three ounce bottles of lotion, and a whoooole truckload of emotional baggage.
Get ready for some real talk about AIDS, kids.
Let’s start with Monifah. As she prepares her fabulous purple suitcase, she talks on the phone with Terez. We learn that her brother,...

Last season on R&B Divas, out singer Monifah introduced her partner Terez to her fellow divas Faith Evans, KeKe Wyatt, Syleena Johnson and Nicci Gilbert. When Season 2 premieres on May 1, it looks like Terez might be popping the question. Of course, should Monifah say yes, she'll have to find time to plan a wedding amongst the drama of planning an R&B Divas tour, as seen in the below promo.
R&B Divas will air Mondays on TV One in May. We'll resume recapping the show, but you can read our recaps from Season 1 now to get all caught up.

I was hooked on R&B Divas as soon as I heard the title. But if you need a little more information, here’s the set-up of this new reality show on TVOne that premiered last night: Faith Evans, singer, author, and former wife of the Notorious B.I.G., has decided to round up a bunch of her favorite R&B singers to Atlanta to record an all-star compilation record. This cast includes Syleena Johnson, Nicci Gilbert, Keke Wyatt, and the girl we’ve only recently learned plays for our team, Monifah.
Turns out Faith got inspiration for the idea from one of the all-time best-ever divas: the one, the one and only Whitney Houston. Faith was in charge of helping to organize a Grammys party which included Whitney’s last-ever performance before her untimely death. At this event, Faith was reunited with Monifah and...

Love and Hip Hop Sneak Peek: Can Nancy and Chrissy Patch Things Up?
The ladies of Love and Hip Hop have spent a vast majority of their time in season two in a state of transition, as the four "main characters" are all at a crossroads in their lives. Whether it be careers or men, each cast member is in a certain gray area where it's not quite clear how things will ultimately turn out, be it record deals for Somaya and Olivia, independence for Emily, or harmonious family relationships for Chrissy.
In the nine minute sneak peek for episode four of Love and Hip Hop, three of the four women are facing their current demons head on, with only Somaya not included. Career chameleon Chrissy looks to be getting into another new business venture; this time, she may be involved in Jim's t-shirt business, literally ran from the couple's garage.
