Inter Yapim is in post-production on brutal revenge saga “Sayara,” directed by Turkish horror genre specialist Can Evrenol, whose film “Baskin” premiered in TIFF’s Midnight Madness section.
The Istanbul-based company has dropped a teaser for “Sayara,” which is being packaged as both a four-episode miniseries and a dark 90-minute horror thriller. Variety has been given an exclusive first look above.
“Sayara” is the moniker of the title character described in promotional materials as a “brooding femme fatale from Turkmenistan.” Sayara works as a cleaning lady in one of Istanbul’s gyms. The revenge plot kicks in when her older sister, Yonca, is raped and killed by Barış – the spoiled owner of the gym, with whom Yonca has an illicit affair – and his three friends. Barış’ father is a member of Parliament who pulls strings, so her death is ruled a suicide in court. But Sayara’s father is Shamil Hskaov,...

Can Evrenol broke into the horror scene with his Turkish nightmare Baskin, a festival smash hit that called back to 80s classics like Hellraiser.
He has since directed Housewife and Girl With No Mouth, and next up is the brutal revenge flick, Sayara, which is currently in post-production.
Bloody Disgusting has the exclusive first images from Sayara, which is described as a brutal anti-revenge film with a brutal anti-hero.
“Sayara is the name of the most unsuspected femme fatale from Turkmenistan. When her sister is murdered by a bunch of rich kids with political connections, Sayara goes on a head-bashing, eye-gouging, bone-smashing rampage of revenge, with some sambo and jiujitsu action!”
Duygu Kocabiyik stars as Sayara with Turkish heartthrob Emre Kizilirmak in a role that will truly shock his fans.
Writer-director Can Evrenol tell is the film is “a toxic psycho-sexual drama [that] slowly becomes a violent martial arts revenge flick.

Indiecan Entertainment has unveiled an official US trailer for an indie post-apocalyptic adventure film titled Girl With No Mouth, following a group of children who suffer from deformities due to a toxic explosion. The film is made by Turkish filmmaker Can Evrenol, who broke out in the genre world with his horror film Baskin from TIFF a few years ago. This is a clever concept as well - enhancing a post-apocalyptic survival story with these kids and their missing parts. Girl With No Mouth stars Denizhan Akbaba, Elif Sevinç, Özgür Civelek, Kaan Alpdayi, Sermet Yesil, and Mehmet Yilmaz Ak. I'm curious to see where it all leads and what it's trying to say. Perhaps just that they are safer with everyone's strengths working together. Here's the official trailer (+ posters) for Can Evrenol's Girl With No Mouth, direct from YouTube: In Girl With No Mouth, a group of children who...

Baskin director Can Evrenol will soon be hitting the festival circuit with his latest offering, The Girl With No Mouth, and those hoping for a little taste of the dark fable now get their wish with the arrival of a festival teaser for the film. Girl With No Mouth is a coming-of-age story about Perihan, a girl born without a mouth, who is befriended by a gang of three boys also missing body parts, while on the run from the authorities. If you're seeing shades of Guillermo Del Toro and the Brothers Grimm in there, you're not the only one, with Evrenol here putting his distinctive stamp on the sort of fairy tale intended as a dark, cautionary work as the Grimm work was before...

A few days ago Netflix dropped the trailer for its upcoming Turkish fantasy action series, The Protector. The series, starring Çagatay Ulusoy as Hakan, the titular protector, as a man given supernatural powers by a mysterious talisman. These powers translate into a whole lot of ass kicking and a new set of supercharged pals who are charged with training and protecting him from The Immortal, a kind of evil cognate. The whole thing looks pretty rad, and while I confess to not knowing a whole lot about Turkish film, but I do know that of the 13 episodes Netflix has lined up for this new event, our friend Can Evrenol is at the helm with what looks like a pretty sizable sandbox to play...

"I feel so much better now... I think Bruce cured my feelings." Rlj Entertainment has debuted a new trailer (via Bloody-Disgusting) for a psychological horror thriller titled Housewife, which initially premiered at a number of genre festivals last year. This erotic horror is about a woman who watched her mother kill her sister and father when she was a child. Her dreams remain plagued by that painful memory, and things get even creepier when a celebrity psychic takes a special liking to her. Clémentine Poidatz stars as Holly, and the cast includes David Sakurai, Alicia Kapudag, Defne Halman, and Ali Aksöz. Directed by Can Evrenol (Baskin), who also co-wrote the film with Cem Özüduru, the film stars Clementine Poidatz (Shut-In) and David Sakurai (Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald). Rlje Films plans to release the film in the fall of 2018.
“We’re truly excited to bring Housewife to audiences,” said Ward. “Housewife has been well-received by horror fans in Europe and North America at various film festivals and the word of mouth has been tremendous.”

After experimenting with his form of boundary-pushing, cinema-as-memory films to great, succesful lengths with his last three narrative features–not to mention Voyage of Time, which we’re still awaiting an actual U.S. release for–Terrence Malick will return to more of a traditional script with his WWII drama Radegund, hopefully releasing later this year. But first, after splicing in avant-garde and experiential touches with his last few films, he’s making the natural step into virtual reality.
Premiering at South by Southwest Festival–where he gave a rare public talk last year–on March 13 is the Vr experience Together, which is directed by Malick and shot by cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto (Silence, The Wolf of Wall Street, Brokeback Mountain). Clocking in at 5 minutes and 46 seconds and featuring music by Simon Franglen, see the synopsis below, as well as the first look above.
“Together” is a Vr experience about the power of human connection.

From November the 23rd till November the 28th, the German city of Constance will be hosting the Shivers Film Festival. It's the third time the festival is being held and the organizers have just revealed the entire line-up, which happens to be a very impressing one. For starters they have Martin McDonagh's Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missoury, and you can take "starters" literally, as it is the fest's opening film. Other Screen Anarchy favorites include Can Evrenol's Housewife, Yorgos Lanthimos' The Killing of a Sacred Deer, Bill Watterson's Dave Made a Maze and Nabwana I.G.G's utterly fantastic Wakaliwood extravaganza Bad Black. And hey, any festival which plays Tobe Hooper's Lifeforce and Paul Verhoeven's Starship Troopers gets our thumbs-up. And while Germany has had a (25...

Living in Chicago, I spend much of my year being jealous of all the people I see online going to the various genre film festivals held around the parts of the country that aren’t here… until now.
For the first time ever, Chicago is getting its very own full-blown genre festival with Cinepocalypse, a week-long event running November 2nd–9th at the Music Box Theatre, the best place to see a movie in the entire city. Formerly the Bruce Campbell Horror Film Festival (which I have attended since it began and always completely loved), Cinepocalypse now has a new venue, a larger and more ambitious slate of programming, and dozens of special guests. It’s going to be bigger and better than any festival of its kind the city has ever seen, and I can’t wait to be there as much as possible to see as many cool movies as possible.

Let no one say that young Turkish director Can Evrenol doesn't have an eye for film. Throughout his sophomore feature, the English-language horror film Housewife, Evrenol presents the viewer with enticing visuals, almost enough of them to distract from what is otherwise a fairly disappointing follow-up to his 2015 debut, Baskin. Housewife finds the titular woman, an emotionally scarred and frail beauty named Holly, as she and her infinitely supportive husband navigate some pretty weird goings-on. The film opens on a flashback to what appears to be the murder of her older sister by their mother going through her umpteenth mental breakdown, and this image haunts Holly's dreams to the present day. When she is reintroduced to an old friend who has become involved in...

From the emotional making of a low-budget slasher to zombie nightmares, Gothic horrors, an outrageously strange mind cult, a sci-fi alien action extravaganza, a comic strip creature feature and the last word in Killer Clowns, this year’s Horror Channel FrightFest Halloween 2017 line-up is an eclectic mix of the quirky, unusual and extreme… In celebration of the event here’s brand-new posters for threee of the films airing today at the Empire Haymarket, London.
Horror Movie: A Low Budget Nightmare
A funny, sad, candid and revealing documentary on the making of Red Christmas. Sick of playing quirky roles on Australian TV shows, actor/filmmaker Craig Anderson puts everything on the line to make his first low budget slasher about an aborted foetus seeking revenge on its family. With money issues, union troubles, an angry Hollywood Scream Queen and even a circumcision to overcome, we follow Craig’s nail-biting rollercoaster production...

Ahead of the UK premiere of his latest film Housewife at the Horror Channel Frightfest Halloween event today, director Can Evrenol tells us why film is a ‘pervert’s art’, shares his feelings for Fulci and reveals his contribution to Horror Anthology The Field Guide To Evil…
Was it important to make your follow-up film to Baskin in the English language?
I wanted to make the film available for a wider audience and to test myself with a different language movie. I thought it was a fun thing to do.
How do you describe Housewife? What would be your perfect pitch line?
Man, I had this crazy fu*ked-up dream last night! Do you want to see it?
Like Baskin, Housewife shares many similar themes of sexuality, family, social claustrophobia and surreal nightmares. Why are these elements so important to you?

Taking a journey into the mind to work out past childhood trauma can sometimes make for a pretty run-of-the-mill movie, but Turkish director Can Evrenol managed to make the journey something very out of the ordinary and visually dynamic. “Housewife” follows Holly (Clémentine Poidatz), a woman who is dealing the with the violent death of […]

Tagline: "There's Only You and Your Dreams." Housewife is the latest film from Turkish director Can Evrenol (Baskin, 2015). A film student, Evrenol has crafted a Giallo-styled feature, with Housewife. In the film, a woman loses her grip on reality after her sister and father are murdered. The film stars: Clementine Poidatz, David Sakurai and others. This title is currently on a film festival run, with upcoming appearances at the Denver International Film Festival and the Brooklyn Horror Film Festival. An official trailer and poster are available here, for Housewife. The trailer shows a whole host of strange situations. The movie poster shows more bizarre images. Recent years have seen a return to giallo, mainly in independent and foreign horror cinema. The genre doesn’t always hold up because it is inherently weird and often nonsensical. For diehard admirers of Fulci and Bava, however, Turkish director Can Evrenol has become an excitingly bizarre voice in cinema. His feature debut, Baskin, blew many a mind two years ago with its hedonistic madness. Evernol returns this year with Housewife, and while it may not reach the levels of incoherent thrills that his first feature achieved, it’s an involving vision of sensory insanity.
As the title suggests, the film centers on the wife of a true crime author, tormented by a traumatic incident in her past. When a long-lost friend convinces her to attend a cult gathering, the group’s charismatic leader—a man who claims to walk through dreams—initiates her into a bizarre mental maze that may undo her.
