Sofia Vergara is back on our small screens in a big way thanks to the her new Netflix series “Griselda.” The lavish production chronicles the rise of Griselda Blanco, known as the “cocaine Godmother,” as she flees from Medellín, Colombia, to Miami and creates one of the most notorious cartels in history.
Vergara gives her best performance in years as the ruthless, demanding, and brutal Griselda. She owns every scene she’s in and eats up not just the scenery but the entire cast, too. She commands every moment and delivers a complex portrait of a powerful woman, with critics agreeing Vergara is at the top of her game.
Barry Levitt (Empire) observed: “‘Griselda’ has given Vergara the chance to prove that she’s also a gifted dramatic actor — a challenge she more than rises to. Vergara (who also serves as executive producer) practically dissolves into the role, delivering an astonishing performance…...

Netflix's Griselda is one of the best hits of 2024 so far, and there's a good reason that the show is breaking ground. Fans and critics alike have sung praises for the six-episode limited series.
The biographical crime drama tells the story of The Cocaine Godmother Griselda Blanco, who ruled the Miami underworld in the '70s and '80s and helped establish cocaine trade links between Colombia and the United States.
Sofia Vergara's role as the titular character is highly praised, and many want more to do with this crime drama. While we may not get more Griselda, there are several shows to watch that are similar to the series.
10. Weeds
Weeds is a funnier, lower-stakes version of Griselda, in a way. Hard times drive Nancy Botwin (Mary-Lousie Parker) into the marijuana trade. A widowed mother of two boys, this mom is willing to do anything for her family.

Griselda’s six episodes have scored 1.59B minutes, easily topping the Disney+ animated series Bluey, the leader of the last cycle, which was second with 1.25B minutes streamed for its 151 episodes.
Among streaming originals, Reacher was still hanging on in the No 2 position, scoring 741M minutes for its 16 Prime episodes. A pair of 2024 debuts, American Nightmare (676M minutes) and Fool Me Once (669M minutes) were right behind.

Almost everyone knows the name of Tony Montana, the fictional drug lord immortalized by Al Pacino in the 1983 movie "Scarface," yet few know the name of Miami's real-life most notorious king, er, queenpin, Griselda Blanco Restrepo. In the late 1970s, Blanco seized control of Miami's drug trade through incredible violence, waging war on any who opposed her. This led to the "Cocaine Cowboy" wars, in which Blanco's enforcers would kill their opponents in broad daylight, sometimes in motorcycle drive-by shootings. Blanco's life story is both fascinating and terrible, full of sex, drugs, and murder, and is totally ripe for a fictionalized interpretation.
Sofia Vergara stars as Blanco in "Griselda," a six-part limited series on Netflix that tells the story of the infamous self-made billionaire, drug pusher, and multiple murderer, although the real story is even more brutal and impossible to believe than the miniseries depicts. Most remember Griselda Blanco as the “Black Widow,” a ruthless Colombian drug lord whose network flooded Miami with cocaine, brought in $80 million a month nationally, and who’s been personally implicated in a rumored 200 murders. Michael Corleone Blanco, her youngest son raised at the height of her drug-trafficking empire, admits she was a rigid, stern woman he affectionately called cariñosa — an endearing term given to loved ones.
“As a kid, you can’t really comprehend what is wrong, what is right, and what is the family business,” Blanco tells Rolling Stone.

A lawsuit aimed at the Sofia Vergara-starring Netflix show Griselda has been settled. In documents obtained by The Hollywood Reporter on Friday, the counsel of the family of the late Griselda Blanco dismissed the complaint with prejudice, which means the same claim can’t be brought back to court.
The settlement comes weeks after the actress and the streamer were sued over the miniseries, in which Vergara portrays the Colombian drug lord, who was killed in 2012.
Blanco’s son, Michael Corleone Blanco, and his wife, Marie, filed the suit on Jan. 17 in a Miami-Dade County Court, claiming the family did not authorize Netflix to use their “image, likeness and/or identity” and wanted to block the six-part show from airing on Jan. 25.
According to the complaint, Michael alleged that he discussed the possibility of developing a book and show about his mother’s story with producers from 2009 to 2022, as...

Griselda is not the story of a hero. Inspired by the life of Colombian businesswoman Griselda Blanco, it’s a fictionalized dramatization in which “there are so many nuances to explore in terms of who she was as a woman, as a mother, and, of course, as a drug lord who created one of the most profitable cartels in history,” says executive producer and star Sofía Vergara.
The limited series recreates the early days of the cocaine craze — and new money — sweeping Miami in the late ’70s and early ’80s. When the cast for Season 2 of “The Traitors” was announced by Peacock, some names jumped out to reality TV junkies as the ones to watch. Who would expect the likes of Johnny “Bananas” Devenanzio, Maksim “Maks” Chmerkovskiy, Janelle Pierzina, and Dan Gheesling to be booted out so early in the process? Furthermore, who would have thought icons like Trishelle Cannatella, Sandra Diaz-Twine, Parvati Shallow (a traitor herself), and Chris “Ct” Tamburello would be overshadowed and outplayed by two stars coming from non-competition shows: “Real Housewives of Atlanta’s” Phaedra Parks and “The Bachelor’s” Peter Weber?
When Phaedra was chosen as a traitor, many questioned how successful she would be in the role compared to Dan and Parvati, who were already known for their villainous pasts and winning ways on “Big Brother” and “Survivor,” respectively. Turns out, she is easily the most adept in the role and seems unafraid to make big moves,...

According to Sofía Vergara’s makeup artist Todd McIntosh, three prominent and iconic features needed to be covered up when transforming Vergara into Griselda Blanco, also known as “The Godmother,” for her latest role in Netflix’s “Griselda“: her nose, her “white smile” and her eyebrows.
McIntosh, who worked closely with the actor, notes “Griselda was not a pretty lady. So, the idea was to take away the things that make [Vergara] pretty and to make her look average. On top of that, tell the story through traditional makeup.”
In the six-part limited series, Vergara’s transformation is remarkable. Completely unrecognizable, she plays the notorious and ruthless Griselda. The story charts Griselda’s move from Colombia to Miami in the 1970s and follows her into the 1980s as she builds her drug empire, fearlessly taking on the other cartels to run one of the biggest cartels in history.

Sofia Vergara, who plays famed Colombian drug kingpin Griselda Blanco in the new hit Netflix series Griselda, is facing a lawsuit from the Blanco family for using her likeness without consent. They say the truth is stranger than fiction, but in the real world of Griselda Blanco, the truth is more brutal.
Inspired by the true story of Colombian drug trafficker Griselda Blanco and starring Sofía Vergara (who also serves as executive producer) as the ambitious and murderous Miami cartel head, Griselda tracks the dramatized life, business acumen, and downfall of “the Godmother,” one of America’s highest earning drug traffickers in the ’70s and ’80s… and one of the most deadly.
She went by many nicknames: “La Madrina,” “The Black Widow,” “La Dama de la Mafia.” But for her foes, the name Griselda became synonymous with death.

Sofia Vergara‘s new show Griselda premiered on Netflix on January 25, in which the Modern Family star plays Colombian drug lord Griselda Blanco.
Blanco, nicknamed “Cocaine Godmother,” was a prominent figure in the Colombian drug trade and business in Miami. Blanco had ties to the Medellín Cartel and was known for her vicious reign during the Miami drug world of the 1980s, often hiring hits on people who crossed her, including her husbands. In 2012, Blanco was shot and killed in Medellín, Colombia.
On January 17, Blanco’s youngest son, Michael Corleone Blanco, and his wife filed suit against Vergara and Netflix.
Blanco’s son says that for years, people have approached him to adapt his mother’s story into various forms of media, Netflix included.
According to Michael’s claims, Netflix did not hire him as a consultant during the show’s production. He stated they relied on other accounts rather than the family’s.

Of the dozens of people introduced in Netflix's Griselda, only one remains alive: Michael Corleone Blanco, the youngest son of notorious drug trafficker Griselda Blanco (played by Sofía Vergara). As the docudrama reveals in its finale, Griselda had her husband Darío Sepúlveda (Alberto Guerra) assassinated when he fled to Colombia with Michael, while her three eldest sons, Dixon, Uber, and Ozzy, are suspected to have been murdered by her rivals. The "cocaine godmother" faced a similar fate in 2012, when, after her release from prison, she was gunned down in Medellín by an assailant on a motorcycle — a style of killing she's often credited with bringing to the streets of Miami.

I suppose it’s one of those shows that you can gobble up in one sitting, so you’ll be looking for some sort of replacement now that it’s over. We know you’re as addicted to these shows as the cokeheads who fell at the Godmother’s feet. The rise of the Godmother was quick and dramatic,...

Few series acclimate the viewer as quickly and completely to its period as Netflix‘s “Griselda,” a drama set in the ’70s and ’80s about cocaine magnate Griselda Blanco (Sofia Vergara). From the show’s opening frames, the filmmakers immerse the viewers in 1970s Miami, giving an immediate and persuasive sense that what we’re watching is something more than a typical reconstruction of an era — it feels as though someone just happened to drop a camera in the middle of the real Griselda’s life and captured everything that occurred as it occurred.
Some of this comes from the carefully chosen and steadily accumulating period details in the production design and costumes, but what really allows “Griselda” to establish its ’70s milieu within seconds is the gorgeously textured cinematography by Armando Salas, ASC. In partnership with director Andrés Baiz, who, like Salas, worked on all six of the series’ episodes,...

Netflix’s Griselda is as much about Griselda Blanco as it is about June Hawkins, the female police officer who played a crucial part in catching the Godmother of Coke in Miami back in the day. In many ways, the show puts the two women in parallel positions, and despite their opposite professions, they face the same sort of problems. While Griselda was trying to make her name in the world of narcotics and drug lords, June was simply trying to do her job in the machismoland of the Miami police department. While in the show, we start with events that take place after 1978. June started as a police officer back in 1975. Not only was she a woman, but she was also a single mother, so you can only imagine the sort of discrimination she faced for simply existing, or at least, that’s how it’s depicted on the show.

Griselda on Netflix stars Sofia Vergara as the godmother Griselda Blanco, and is a decently accurate representation of the real-life events that occurred in Miami soon after Griselda fled to Miami after killing her then-husband Alberto. It’s an entertaining show that familiarizes us with the rise and eventual fall of the drug lady who took over Miami with her coke. I suppose it’s quite a tragic tale at the end of the day, and it makes you feel a little bit empathetic towards the queenpin despite all of the blood on her hands. After a dramatic turn of events in episode 5 of the show, where all hell broke loose, Griselda finds herself under the “protection” of one man alone, Rivi. In the final episode of the show, we learn about how she got caught and what happened to her family after that. Let’s quickly take a walk...

Griselda Blanco, a formidable criminal mastermind, instilled fear throughout the 1970s and 80s Miami.
Recently, the infamous drug lord has undergone a Hollywood transformation, with Sofía Vergara of Modern Family fame teaming up with the creators of the crime drama Narcos to portray the leader of the criminal underworld.
The six-part Netflix series Griselda unfolds with intense shoot-outs, portraying the notorious criminal as a relatable yet ambitious and ruthless woman.
However, the authentic narrative of the woman nicknamed the “Cocaine Godmother” and linked to the deaths of her three husbands is considerably more complex.
As the mid-1980s approached, Blanco’s criminal empire began to crumble, and her reign of terror abruptly concluded with her arrest in Irvine, California.
On February 17, 1985, Blanco was apprehended in her residence by DEA agents, facing charges of manufacturing, importing, and distributing cocaine. Subsequently, Blanco spent two decades behind bars, marking the end of her tumultuous and notorious criminal career.

The actress known for her role on the ABC hit show Modern Family, which ran for 11 seasons, was spotted with Emilio Estefan, husband of Latin pop star Gloria Estefan, during the event. Estefan wore glasses with red lenses, a white suit and black pants. Carolina Giraldo, also known as Karol G, who plays Carla in the series, attended the event as well, along with other co-stars.

Netflix brings the story of a notorious drug queenpin to life in Griselda. The six-episode limited series is inspired by the real saga of “Cocaine Godmother” Griselda Blanco, a Colombian woman who became a prominent player in Miami’s violent cocaine trade in the 1970s and 1980s.
Sofia Vergara plays Blanco, a ruthless underworld figure who relies on a combination of charm and savagery to navigate between business and family. Argentinean actor Martín Rodríguez plays her right-hand man, enforcer Rivi Ayala, who was in thrall to his powerful boss.
“Rivi Ayala is based on a real person who was very close to Griselda,” Rodríguez told Showbiz Cheat Sheet. “He is completely fascinated by her and is willing to do anything for her.”

While Sofía Vergara was delighting millions of viewers for more than a decade as Gloria Pritchett on Modern Family, she was thinking about Griselda Blanco.
For 15 years, Vergara pored over the life of the woman known as the cocaine trade pioneer — who also earned the nicknames “The Godmother” and “The Black Widow” — for transforming the drug trade from Colombia to the United States, making her biggest mark in Miami, in the 1970s to the early 2000s.
Narcos boss Eric Newman had also spent time thinking about Blanco. The executive producer behind Netflix’s hit drug cartel franchise says he always wanted to tell the Colombian queenpin’s story and even considered bringing her into the Narcos fold while working the flagship series and spinoff Narcos: Mexico.
“The challenge that I found immediately with Griselda [Blanco] is that her story is so compelling; she’s such an anomaly,” he tells The Hollywood Reporter.

After “Narcos” and “Narcos: Mexico,” director Andrés Baiz was hesitant to return to the world of cartel crime dramas. At least until “Modern Family” star Sofía Vergara and her business partner Luis Balaguer approached Baiz and executive producer Eric Newman with the story of Griselda Blanco, the Cocaine Godmother.
“I’m going to be very honest here. Because I’m Colombian and had been working in ‘Narcos’ for seven years, I was a little bit over [the subject matter]. I wanted to do something different,” Baiz, who has also directed episodes of “The Sandman,” told TheWrap.
But when he was given the opportunity to guide Vergara through her prestige drama debut by directing and producing all six episodes of “Griselda,” Baiz changed his mind.
“It was less about the character and more about the opportunity to work with somebody and getting her to reinvent herself as an actor. That was what really drew me,...
