Nestled in the rolling vineyards and Instagram-worthy towns, the Napa Valley Film Festival kicks off its ninth edition with a new leader, and a renewed mandate to build on its success. Nvff runs Nov. 13-17 in Napa, Yountville, St. Helena and Calistoga.
Entertainment industry veteran Tom Tardio took over as CEO in July, and reports to the Cinema Napa Valley board of directors, which also expanded its ranks over the summer.
But that doesn’t mean the festival, which has cultivated deep roots in the local community, is going too corporate.
“We have over 400 volunteers in the community that work all of the venues,” says Tardio. “Whole Foods supports the volunteers. That to me is a small town coming together for a five-day festival. That to me is unique.”
A potent mix of wine, food and film, Nvff programs a competition section — chosen from about 1,000 entries — and also plays host to awards season hopefuls.

“On behalf of the La Cubana family, with heavy hearts, we are deeply saddened to share the passing of our beloved Executive Chef Carl Ruiz,” the restaurant’s statement reads.
“No words can fully express our sadness at the sudden loss of our dear friend and brother. Beyond his immense culinary talent, Carl’s larger-than-life personality never failed to entertain, enlighten, and uplift every person he encountered along his #Ruizing adventures. His fierce intellect and infectious humor knew no bounds. He was a mighty force of down home Cuban cuisine, and lived life to the fullest, just as he cooked–with ‘dancing always’ as the most important ingredient. If Food Network has proven anything over the last few years, it’s that it knows how to take advantage of holidays. To get your in the mood for Halloween, there’s a special Cutthroat Kitchen headed your way. The show is plenty of fun on its own, though some of the specials have gone a little silly with the things people end up having to do, but you can’t go too far when it’s Halloween.
It’s a five-episode tournament that kicks off on September 28th, and ends with a finale episode where the four winners battle it out.
Host Alton Brown won’t be holding anything back, and it isn’t just foods with appropriately “scary” names (blood oranges, Devil’s Food cake) that come into play here. The challenges are also Halloween-themed, like cooking while in outlandish costumes, and using creepy knives.

Cooking competitions have had mixed success on network television. The Taste on ABC can hardly be considered a hit but it's survived for three seasons. Meanwhile, The American Baking Competition on CBS was dropped after one. How will Food Fighters perform for NBC? Will it be renewed for a second season or will it be cancelled instead? Stay tuned to find out.
On Food Fighters, home cooks compete with professional chefs to see who can make the cook's signature dish the best. The game show is hosted Adam Richman and the pro chefs include Cat Cora, Elizabeth Falkner, Duff Goldman, Lorena Garcia, Jet Tila, and G. Garvin.
The ratings are typically the best indication of a show's likelihood of staying on the air. The higher the ratings (particularly the 18-49 demo), the better the chances for survival. This chart will be updated as new ratings...

Food Network Star is a show that represents a bizarre high and low for me. If you’ve been following me for a while, you probably already know my take on the show, and what happens afterward. The short version is that while I actually love the competition show itself, it never (almost) ends up with a person that I would ever watch, and that’s almost always because the person I would actually watch gets cut fairly early.
On the other side of the coin, the show becomes less interesting to me (as do all reality competitions) the more we move into the category of contestants who already own restaurants, or otherwise have a fairly decent food-related career. But, that’s just me.
At any rate, the show has some new twists this time around, and the competition is going on the road.
