Welcome back to Dead Time. I hope you left a light on for me, because this month we’re talking about things that go bump in the night, but in a new way—from a queer and transgender perspective.

Dash Kwiatkowski (they/them) is a writer, podcaster, and paranormal investigator who created a new queer paranormal series called Liminal, which can be seen on YouTube. Dash has assembled a paranormal team that includes comedian and journalist Rosa Escandón (she/her), who co-hosts the podcast Psychic Friendz with Dash, and storyteller, performer, artist, and practicing witch Rockette Fox (she/her), who also hosts the podcast Fantastically Strange.

It was 2017, and I was sifting through a hundred pages of printed-out poetry, essays, photography, and art. Earlier that day, I'd gone to my college campus's library and paid - at a painful 10 cents per page - to have the soon-to-be journal issue printed in its entirety.

I was just starting an internship with Sinister Wisdom, the nearly 50-year-old pillar of lesbian literary and arts publishing. I was an editorial assistant of sorts, helping the editor ready a journal issue for print and distribution. Now, sitting on the floor of my bedroom with hundreds of pages of writing fanning out around me, it was time to order the manuscript, paying attention to flow, theme, and genre.

A new feature film based on Leslie Feinberg’s “Stone Butch Blues” is currently seeking a lead actor. The story follows Jess Goldberg in a journey of self discovery through labor and community, eventually leading them to transition to male. Beginning in 1960s blue-collar Buffalo, New York, Jess grows up as a masculine girl “struggling with identity and self-acceptance.” Jess lands a job at a local factory, discovering “some semblance of community.” Working with butch women during the day, Jess spends nights at underground gay bars. Jess “comes into their own” as a passionate union leader at the factory. After starting to take testosterone, Jess feels alienated from their community in Buffalo, New York.
