Apparently Lionsgate held a special press screening of The Hunger Games (3/23) in Los Angeles for select movie bloggers and today lifted the embargo to the point those that were in attendance were allowed to tweet their reactions. I know someone that will be at the premiere tonight so I'll soon be getting an opinion from someone that knows my specific tastes, but for now we have this Tweet round-up: "I have visited The Hunger Games. And they were awesome. I think I loved the movie, as good as the book. Had a Lotr-epic feeling by the end." ~ Alex Billington (FirstShowing.net) "I'm getting in line behind my colleagues to say that The Hunger Games is terrific- thoughtful, thrilling, well-acted & emotionally engaging." ~ Todd Gilchrist "Completely surprised by The Hunger Games. Loved it. Dark, exciting, ambiguous sci-fi allegory. Another amazing performance from J. Lawrence." ~ Jeremy Smith (Ain't It Cool News) "Oh, right:...

A test sceening for Rian Johnson's Looper recenly occurred, and the feedback so far has been very positive. The film stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Bruce Willis, Paul Dano, Jeff Daniels and Emily Blunt and is about a group of hitmen who receive their assignments from the future. They use time-travel to cover the tracks of their murders.
Here are some early reviews for you to check out:
Devin Faraci at Badass Digest:
Looper represents a major leap for Johnson, a huge step forward in style and scope. It’s smart and funny and thrilling, the kind of science fiction movie that wildlyentertains while never shortchanging characters or ideas. Johnson tackles time travel with confidence; at first the rules are waved away, but eventually the ways that time travel works begins to become clear to us. The rules have to work, because Looper is tight as a drum, and any hiccup...

One of our most anticipated 2012 releases is Looper, which comes from Brick and The Brothers Bloom director Rian Johnson. The movie shot some time ago, but will not be distributed until next year, and the wait is one I'm not suffering patiently. Looper is a time travel movie, of sorts. It stars Bruce Willis (in the first still from the film, above) and Joseph Gordon-Levitt as two men on opposite ends of a timeline. The central conceit is that there is a society in which time travel exists and is banned. Time-travel tech is still in use, however, as an execution tool: gangsters send targets back in time. When the target lands in the past, specialized hit men, 'loopers,' make the kill. But what happens when a target escapes the execution? And what further complications ensue when the target is the future self of the looper meant to pull the trigger?...

I try not to think about Looper a lot. Coming from Rian Johnson, the director of the Brick and The Brothers Bloom, the anticipation for his third feature is killing me. And it is almost an entire year away from hitting theaters. But distributor FilmDistrict (who picked it up at Cannes this year) decided to go ahead and test-screen it in Los Angeles last night, heightening the anticipation even further.
The sci-fi/time travel film stars Bruce Willis and Joseph Gordon-Levitt (as an younger version of Willis’ character), Emily Blunt, Paul Dano, Jeff Daniels, Garret Dillahunt and Piper Perabo. The high-concept story follows “hitmen whose victims are sent back in time from the future to be executed. The Loopers bump them off in the present, so there is no trace of a crime in the future.” Sound somewhat confusing? Judging from these first impressions, it looks like Johnson nailed it.

We hate to convey a band’s sound by comparing it to that of another, but sometimes there is no way around it, especially when the comparison is layered with compliments. So, City Lights, you guys are the exception to our no association rule. It is time for you guys to meet your parents, Simple Plan and Bowling For Soup. The Columbus, Ohio band, which consists of vocalist, Oshie Bichar, guitarist, Joey Kasouf, guitarist, Jeremy Smith, bassist, Chase Clymer and drummer, Sean Smith, formed in 2008 and released their debut Ep, “Rock Like A Party Star” in April of that same year. I know that I have always been very publicly in favor of novel to film adaptations that throw out the notion of extreme fidelity to the source. So I don't really have a leg to stand on in this argument. But if you're casting Jack Reacher, a French/American ex-military cop who stands 6'5" and often breezes into any given burg looking like a giant disheveled blond bum, then Tom Cruise is the opposite of the man you should be looking for. And yet that's what could happen. Can't say I'm surprised, though. Several of Lee Child's Jack Reacher novels have been optioned, and all have taken their sweet time to the screen in large part because finding the real Jack Reacher is a difficult task. In the novels, almost all of which fall distinctly above the 'average' line for pulp thrillers and many of which are damn good,...

There is no better news than hearing about the signing of band. It might not mean the band’s struggles for fame are resolved, but it does take a considerably large bullet off of the group’s to-do-list. So without further ado, we are pleased to announce Columbus, Ohio’s City Lights has inked a deal with InVogue Records. Usually a fresh sign means some unheard tunes and this linkage between a band and a label is no different. City Lights, who formed in early 2008, consists of vocalist, Oshie Bichar, guitarist Joey Kasouf, guitarist, Jeremy Smith, bassist, Chase Clymer and drummer, Sean Smith. Thirty-five women (and one man) sat at the edge of their seats in the Gold Ballroom at the Penn Plaza Pavilion Sunday morning as they listened to actor James Marsters' recitation of Shakespeare’s sonnet 18. It was so quiet that you could hear a wand -- brought for Tom Felton from "Harry Potter" to sign later, of course -- drop.
So unfolded Marsters' two-hour long "Bard Seminar" at the Big Apple Comic Con (Bacc) Spring Edition this past weekend. The convention, which was started in 1996 in the basement of the Church of St. Paul the Apostle, had humble beginnings, but it was bought by Wizard Entertainment in 2009 and has since gone above ground.
"Shakespeare, man… you're immortal because little did you know one day you'd be read by some TV actor," said Marsters, who played Spike, the bleach-blond vampire on "Buffy the Vampire Slayer." Noting that Shakespeare had written...

Plain White T's have debuted a music video in support of their latest single "Boomerang". Talking about the clip, Tom Higgenson said, "We wanted the Boomerang video to have a dream-like feel, so we used a lot of stop-motion animation and a spinning floor to give it that surreal effect. Art for art's sake."
The video revolves around Tom who's blindly in love with a heart breaker. "You treated me like I'm your little toy, You tell me I'm not like other boys/ And next thing I know you toss me aside/ And you don't even bother with goodbye/ But when you say hello, I can't ignore you," he sings his heart out.
"Boomerang" is co-written by Tom and Jeremy Smith. It's released as a second single of Plain White T's sixth studio album "The Wonders of the Younger".

This week, on a very special episode of Reject Radio, we celebrate April Fool’s Day by talking seriously about great movies, director’s cuts and movies about people cutting other people up. Junkfood Cinema specialist Brian Salisbury gets together with Gordon and the Whale editor (and VHS enthusiast) Brian Kelley as we all rejoice in the 25th anniversary of the ridiculous teen slasher flick April Fool’s Day and bathe in the acid bath of a few others. Plus, Jordan Hoffman of Ugo and Jeremy Smith from Aint it Cool go mano y mano in our Movie News Pop Quiz in an epic battle to save the world from impending destruction (and to talk about director’s cuts, when they work, and when they don’t). You've got to hand it to Quentin Tarantino: he can go months or even years without a peep, and then he comes out of the gate with a big project. Last time it was Inglourious Basterds, the WWII film that he'd been talking up for years, but actually made in a year, exactly as he said he would when announcing it at Cannes 2008. Now he's got a Western project. Rumblings of the film emerged last week [1], then were confirmed yesterday [2] with word that the film is a western that will feature Christoph Waltz and perhaps Franco Nero, Keith Carradine and Treat Williams. Now the director has talked about it at the Weinstein Company Oscar afterparty. In short: he's on track to deliver the script within two months (seemingly to The Weinstein Company) and then get the film before cameras later this year. Quite a turnaround for the director, who...

We're gearing up for a Tarantino-heavy March here in Los Angeles, what with Qt's month-long programming stint at the New Beverly. And here's some news you can expect to hear more on as fan boys corner the director between screenings: Ain't It Cool's Jeremy Smith reports that Tarantino will direct a spaghetti Western starring his Inglorious Basterds Oscar-winner, Christoph Waltz. Previously, Django himself (Aka Franco Nero) revealed his own involvement, name-dropping Keith Carradine and Treat Williams as additional co-stars. How do you say it? That's a bingo! Franco NeroIn an article I wrote up on Saturday discussing the seemingly inevitable death of film as digital filmmaking is sweeping the landscape I made brief reference to Quentin Tarantino's upcoming film, which was apparently starting to come together. However, at that time there was no word one what the film was, who would be in it or when we should expect to see it. Today that's changed.
News first surfaced when Italian actor Franco Nero told MoviePlayer (via The Playlist) his next project would be a spaghetti western called The Angel, the Bad and the Wise, a tribute to Sergio Leone that he said Quentin Tarantino would have some involvement in along with the likes of Keith Carradine and Treat Williams. "It's a movie that contains humor, lots of action, but also a great plot," Nero added.

Last week, in addition to finding that the full cut of Kill Bill complete with new anime sequence (aka Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair) would play the New Beverly Cinema in March, there were whisperings that Quentin Tarantino is busy assembling his new film [1]. At the time we didn't have any real word about what the movie would be, but now Italian actor and one-time spaghetti western star Franco Nero says that he is involved in a western with Quentin Tarantino. Further reports say that the director's next film is definitely a western, and that it will star breakout Inglourious Basterds star Christoph Waltz. Franco Nero told Movieplayer [2] (via The Playlist [3]), My next project will be a western, but not in Italy. Here it is hard work. Remember in 2004, when Quentin Tarantino started promising that he’d release both parts of his kung-fu/revenge-western opus Kill Bill as one uncut feature? And remember how the thing was screened in 2006, left people slobbering for a DVD release, and then nothing? Well, now that the Oscar season has finally limped to a whimpering, predictable close, the film blogosphere can finally get back to what we the most: Tarantino!
According to /Film, Quentin Tarantino will unveil the long-awaited Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair at the New Beverly Cinema in Los Angeles. The full version will run for a week as part of Taratino’s takeover of the New Beverly for all of March 2011 and part of April. As for whether or not we’ll see it on DVD, that’s another story. Here’s was Tarantino said in 2008:

Ever since the opening of the first part of Quentin Tarantino's two-film opus Kill Bill, there have been rumblings about a domestic release of the full unified version of the film that ended up playing Cannes in 2006. The film would be both halves of Kill Bill plus new animation expanding the backstory of O-Ren Ishii, and some other bits and changes to Part I that were seen in the Japanese release, but not in the Us and Europe. Since 2009, the director has been talking about releasing Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair, as it is called, on DVD. It has been shown here and there, and a 'coming soon' placeholder page has been on Amazon [1] for years. Now Quentin Tarantino has programmed Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair for a full week at the New Beverly Cinema in Los Angeles, as part of his takeover of the...

Like a lightsaber to the midsection, reactions to news that George Lucas is planning to rerelease 3D versions of the "Star Wars" sextet have been swift and, more often than not, deadly.
But when the Force actually is with them, will fans be able to stay away?
For every "I'll be first in line," there are another 20-30 Web comments along the lines of "Sw is just a machine now," "I'll stay away in droves," "Lucas is beating a dead horse" or "Never have I seen something so amazing be systematically destroyed." The outcry has been visceral and widespread.
Waves of complaints and other cris de coeur in the past 24 hours have attacked everything from Lucas' perceived greed to the fear that he'll further "ruin" the hallowed original trilogy, from his choice of "Episode I: The Phantom Menace" to start the 3D series as lunatic to the bandwagon glut...

"Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World" hits shelves on DVD and Blu-Ray in November, and Universal has released the full specs for every iteration of Edgar Wright's live-action adaptation of Bryan Lee O'Malley's hit comic book series.
While the movie didn't quite meet expectations at the box office, it was difficult to find anyone who didn't have high praise for Wright's kinetic, effects-driven celebration of everything that made O'Malley's comic so great. And like any good DVD/Blu-Ray release, the movie comes packed with some cool bonus features, too.
Personally, I'm a little intrigued by the deleted scenes and alternate footage, as I managed to sneak into an early workprint of the film and, well... the ending of the unfinished version of the film was quite different from the theater cut I saw.
