The last love of Franz Kafka, the celebrated Czech author of “Metamorphosis,” will be portrayed in romantic drama “The Glory of Life.” TrustNordisk has boarded international sales ahead of Cannes, while Majestic is handling the domestic rights.
Currently shooting, “The Glory of Life” is directed by Georg Maas (“Two Lives”) and is inspired by the love story between Kafka and Dora Diamant.
The period drama was penned by Michael Gutmann and Maas. Producers are Helge Sasse and Solveig Fina for Tempest Film and Tommy Pridnig for Lotus Film.
Kafka and Diamant met in 1923 on the Baltic Sea coast, a year before the author died from tuberculosis. The worldly wise Diamant, who was working in a Jewish community, took him to Berlin, and as Kafka’s health deteriorates rapidly, they traveled together to a sanatorium in Austria. The memory of their time together will shape Diamant for the rest of her life.

Beloved Sisters producer Uschi Reich on Dominik Graf at the New York Film Festival: "It was very important for Dominik to work with the language." Photo: Anne-Katrin Titze
Dominik Graf's Beloved Sisters (Die Geliebten Schwestern) starring Florian Stetter, Henriette Confurius and Hannah Herzsprung alongside Claudia Messner, Ronald Zehrfeld, Michael Wittenborn, Maja Maranow and Andreas Pietschmann, sharply re-invents the costume drama with an historical fiction centered around the ménage-à-trois love story between writer Friedrich Schiller (Stetter) and the sisters Caroline (Herzsprung) and Charlotte (Confurius) von Lengefeld.
I met up with producer Uschi Reich during the New York Film Festival to discuss her role in bringing the story to the screen. Independent production and distribution company Main Street Films (which recently had a domestic success with the male stripper doc "La Bare") will theatrically release Christian Schwochow’s acclaimed spy drama "West" across the U.S. on November 7. Set during the Berlin Wall-era, the film’s release date will commemorate the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall on November 9. "West" was also one of the films shortlisted to be Germany’s candidate for the Foreign Language Academy Award.
The film was also part of the Kino! Fetival of German Films, which we covered back in June. Read More Here
"'West' is a strong and emotional film that accurately portrays the fear and tension that existed between the East and the West during the Berlin Wall-era and is an important reminder of Germany’s recent history,” said Craig Chang, Chairman of Main Street Films.
“This is a very personal film for me,” said Christian Schwochow, director. “My family left in 1989 just after the wall came down, but it was still a time of great uncertainty. All we had was hope that life would be better and that’s a great motivator. Releasing "West" during the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall is very special, especially after having the opportunity to collaborate with my mother, who wrote the screenplay.”
Winning the Fipresci prize at the 2013 Montreal Film Festival and the Best Actress award for Jôrdis Triebel at the 2014 German Film Awards, West is based on Julia Franck’s autobiographical novel Camp Fire and adapted by the director’s mother and regular screenwriting partner, Heide Schwochow.
Set during the late 1970s, three years after Nelly Senff’s boyfriend Wassilij’s apparent death, she decides to escape from behind the Berlin Wall with her son Alexej, leaving her traumatic past behind. Pretending to marry a West German, she crosses the border to start a new life. But soon her past starts to haunt her as the Allied Secret Service begin to question Wassilij’s mysterious disappearance. Fraught with paranoia, Nelly is forced to choose between discovering the truth about her former lover and her hopes for a better tomorrow.
"West" stars Jördis Triebel, Alexander Scheer, Tristan Göbel, and Jacky Ido (who is currently the lead actor in Luc Besson's TV series Taxi Brooklyn), and is produced by ö Filmproduktion’s Katrin Schlösser, zero one film’s Thomas Kufus, and Terz Filmproduktion’s Christoph Friedel. Helge Sasse of Senator Film Produktion, Barbara Buhl of Wdr, Stefanie Groß of Swr, Cooky Ziesche of rbb, and Georg Steinert of Arte are co-producers.

CEO of the Berlin-based producer-distributor resigns after eight years in the role and “takes responsibility” for major losses in 2013.
Helge Sasse, the CEO of Germany’s Senator Entertainment, is to step down next month after more than eight years in the role.
Under his leadership, Senator Film Verleih released blockbusters such as The Reader, The King’s Speech and The Intouchables in German cinemas, of which the latter earned Senator $80m in 2012.
However, Sasse invested that money into acquisitions of titles such as Silver Linings Playbook, Side Effects and The Master, which did not meet expectations at the German box office. It saw the company record a net loss of $38m (€27.4m) in 2013 as revenues fell 47.1% to $37.5m (€27.1m).
Part of a major restructure will see British investment group Sapinda take majority control of Senator and refocus the group more on in-house productions and less on international acquisitions. This resulted in a $15m (€10.8m) write-down on film...

If I’m a betting man I’m thinking John Le Carré novels play out extremely well for the big screen (last two items were The Constant Gardener, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy) and that former video helmer Anton Corbijn has transitioned so well into feature film with the two films in his fiche: unconventional biopic Control (2007) and a Euro art-house thriller that we don’t get to see enough of with, The American (2010). A Most Wanted Man has an incredible cast in Rachel McAdams, Robin Wright, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Willem Dafoe, not to mention the German actors also on board.

Cologne, Germany – Daniel Bruhl is set to star in a soccer-themed period film about the man who brought the beautiful game to Germany.
The "Inglourious Basterds" star will play teacher Konrad Koch in "Der Ganz Grosse Traum des Konrad Koch," the debut feature from director Sebastian Grobler.
Loosely based on real events, the film is a "Dead Poet's Society" style tale of an English teacher who takes up a position at a strict, German school in 1874. The unorthodox Koch captures his pupils' imagination by teaching them the strange English game of "football."
English fans probably rue that day. In its World Cup match with England last week, the German team soundly defeated soccer's mother country 4-1.
"Konrad Koch" also stars Burghart Klaussner ("The White Ribbon") and Justus von Dohnanyi ("Men in the City"). Anatol Nitschke of Berlin-based deutschfilm is producing together with Raoul Reinert of Cuckoo Clock Entertainment and Senator Film's Helge Sasse.
