[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for S.W.A.T. Season 7 Episode 6 “Escape.”] S.W.A.T. lures us into a false sense of security with the latest episode. We know it’s Kenny Johnson‘s penultimate one as Luca, and so we expected it to, in addition to welcoming him back, potentially set up his exit. Well, let’s just say that we’re so focused on how it teases another character leaving S.W.A.T. that we just aren’t expecting there to even be another scene! Luca’s home from London and counterterrorism training and eager to get back to work. From the airport, he “wanted to head straight to HQ, had to convince him to get some rest first,” Tan (David Lim) tells Hondo (Shemar Moore) while on the trail Street (Alex Russell) and Chris (Lina Esco) showed him and Cabrera (Brigitte Kali Canales) for a solid hike. “Nothing’s really going to be ...

Quantum Leap Episode 12
Quantum Leap is a show with social justice baked right into it. Whether we are talking about the revival or the original series, hope, heart and humor drive the leaps. “Let Them Play” focuses on the common good, the power of community and love for oneself and others as we follow the Mendez family–Coach Carlos, Miriam (Brigitte Kali Canales), and their daughter Gia (Josielyn Aguilera).
Ben leaps into the year 2012 and the body of Coach Carlos just as the mighty Lady Lions are playing a tight game with Stanford scouts watching from the stands. One of the Lady Lion’s best teammates gets injured. As Ben looks to the bench, only one player is healthy and ready for the court–Gia. Coach Carlos doesn’t hesitate to put his daughter, Gia, in the game and the injured player is miffed about taking a seat.

As Halloween approaches, people are looking to Netflix to provide the scares.
Luckily, the streaming giant has plenty to choose from when it comes to horror – although, as with anything, not all scary movies are created equal.
Trust in the guidance of your fellow horror lovers and find seven of the best-reviewed horror films on Netflix below… just in time for Halloween this weekend.
1. Creep 2 (100 per cent)
While the gruesome horror film was released in 2017, many viewers are just now discovering it thanks to its place on Netflix.
The sequel follows on from the 2004 cult favourite Creep, a found-footage psychological horror film (also on Netflix) directed by Patrick Brice, who co-wrote the story with Mark Duplass.
In the original, Duplass plays a stranger who hires a videographer (Brice) to film him for a day, explaining that the idea behind the video is to pass it down to his unborn son.

Fear the Walking Dead Season 6 Episode 16
So, you’ve spent the last several years surviving a violent hellscape of unliving death—lucky you! Only now, you suddenly find yourself staring down certain death in the form of a nuclear warhead. Knowing your destruction is imminent, how would you choose to live out your last moments?
That’s the basic premise of Fear the Walking Dead’s Season 6 finale, “The Beginning.” And I must admit, I went into this episode with high hopes—only to have those hopes dashed within minutes. This is through no fault of a talented cast that acts its talented heart out (as they usually do week after week). From Lennie James to Brigitte Kali Canales and everyone in between, they make the most out of what they’re given to work with.

Folklore is way more than just telling stories; it serves as a moral compass or as a guide to navigating life. From the most ancient hieroglyphics and cave paintings to Grimms’ Fairy Tales and even today’s memes, human beings have turned to story and imagery to warn onlookers of life’s woes and how to avoid them. Unfortunately, many culture’s folklore and languages are dying off, and we are losing those invaluable lessons. Even though in modern life we have so many resources and guides, how much do we risk when the “old ways” die out?
The Old Ways gives viewers a shocking glimpse of what can go wrong if we lose sight of tradition, and is just as much a lesson in exorcising our poisonous modern-day lifestyles. Have you ever felt like your work-life balance was crushing you? That your stress headaches felt like claws inside your brain?...

In the first part of my interview with director Christopher Alender, writer Marcos Gabriel and star Brigitte Kali Canales from Glasgow Film Festival Frightfest pick The Old Ways, we discussed the development of the script, which explores a Mexican/US journalist’s return to her roots and the ritual exorcism she is subjected to when local people come to believe that she’s possessed. We also talked about casting and some of the things that happened during the shoot. In part two, I began by asking Brigitte about the central emotional relationship in the film, between her character and her cousin who stayed behind when she left the country.
“I feel like I related to that because I have relationships with some of my cousins,” Brigitte says. “And some I was very close to when I was little.

It has been a long time since Cristina (Brigitte Kali Canales) visited Mexico. Having left as a young child following a traumatic experience with her mother, whom other local people believed to be possessed, she moved to the US and immersed herself in a different culture. Now she's back in Veracruz looking for some titillating tales of witchcraft with which to thrill her US readers. She may no longer take such tales seriously, but when she visits a forbidden cave and is kidnapped as a result, it becomes apparent that others still do.
To Cristina's captors, a white-haired old woman and her son, this kidnapping is not a hostile act but a rescue mission. The cave is a haunt of evil spirits and Cristina's family history means that she's at elevated risk. A demon inhabiting her could put the whole community at risk. But could a family history of mental illness.

Stars: Brigitte Kali Canales, Andrea Cortés, Julia Vera, Sal Lopez, Aj Bowen, Weston Meredith | Written by Marcos Gabriel | Directed by Christopher Alender
Directed by Christopher Alender, this US-produced horror offers a Latin American twist on the standard possession story. The result is an engaging and unsettling horror that successfully gets under your skin and throws in some strong allegorical resonance for good measure.
After a short prologue, The Old Ways opens with a bold move, whereby the story ditches the usual character introduction and set-up in favour of jumping straight into the action. American – but Mexico-born – journalist Cristina (Brigitte Kali Canales) awakens to find herself tied up and held against her will in a small room. It quickly transpires that she’s been kidnapped by a group of mysterious locals – including Luz (Julia Vera) and her adult son Javi (Sal Lopez) – who believe that she’s possessed by a demon...

At some point over the last ten or fifteen years there was a huge commercial boom in possession movies. It felt like suddenly every horror with even the tiniest whiff of supernatural about it was trying to be the new Exorcist, squashing watered-down religious chicanery into everything from cheap found-footage moulds to studio level haunted house movies. For the most part, they were white and western as ever, and very few came even close to scratching the surface of what Williams Friedkin and Blatty managed several decades earlier with their seminal Best Picture nominee.
The Old Ways is ironically, a new breed, however. A very different type of possession movie that comes a helluva lot closer to what The Exorcist got so fundamentally right all those years ago. It is, of course, a horror movie through-and-through, with nasty jumps and plenty of gnarly, go-for-broke bumps to boot. But Christopher Alender...

When a journalist who left Mexico as a child and has built her career in the US returns to the place of her birth in search of interesting cultural phenomena to write about, she gets more than she bargained for. This is The Old Ways, part of the Frightfest selection at this year’s Glasgow Film Festival. It’s a story about identity, demonic possession and ancient rituals. A few weeks before the festival, I met up with director Christopher Alender, writer Marcos Gabriel and star Brigitte Kali Canales to discuss the development process, the shoot and more.
“Marcos and I have been working together since we were teenagers in the Nineties,” says Chris. “He came up with the idea for this. We were trying to find something we could do that would be kind of contained...

The organisers of Arrow Video FrightFest Glasgow have announced that, despite continuing Covid-19 restrictions, the festival will return Digitally this year to present a virtual six-pack of tasty titles; an extravaganza of the dark arts that will leave you stirred, shaken and shocked.
There will be six online presentations, including the UK premiere of Kyle Rankin’s controversial high school siege drama Run Hide Fight, starring Isabel May as a fiercely independent student taking on a quartet of invading shooters, and the UK premiere of Out Of This World (Hors Du Monde), a disturbing, compelling study of obsession from brilliant new French director Marc Fouchard. It boasts a stunning performance by Kevin Mischel as a mentally-challenged musician turned Uber driver. A few years back Here Comes Hell, a Black & White mystery thriller, was a FrightFest Glasgow sensation, and The Woman With Leopard Shoes (LA Femme Aux Chaussures Leopard) is another...

"They have seen something inside you." An early festival teaser trailer has unveiled for an indie horror film titled The Old Ways, from filmmaker Christopher Alender. This is premiering at the Sitges Film Festival this month, which is why this trailer is being released to build more buzz after its debut. The film follows Cristina Lopez, as played by Brigitte Kali Canales, a Mexican American reporter who goes back to her homeland of Veracruz in Mexico chasing a story on witchcraft and faith healers. But then she becomes the subject of her own story, kidnapped by a local "bruja" and her son. The indie cast includes Andrea Cortés, Julia Vera, Sal Lopez, Aj Bowen, Weston Meredith, & Julian Lerma. This is just a first look teaser, but there's enough creepy footage to give me a jolt. Snakes...! Why'd it have to be snakes?! Tread carefully. Here's the first teaser trailer (+ festival...

"Do you trust her?" The Orchard has debuted an official trailer for an indie crime thriller titled Thumper, from writer/director Jordan Ross. This stars Eliza Taylor (seen on "The 100") as a new student at a drug-ridden high school in an impoverished California town. She befriends a local drug dealer, but ends up way too deep in the local drug ring. The cast includes Daniel Webber, Pablo Schreiber, Lena Headey, Ben Feldman, and Brigitte Kali. This premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival but didn't emerge with much buzz. There's some impressive cinematography in this trailer, but the rest of it seems like another typical small-town crime thriller, once again about teens caught up in the craziness unable to escape. Check it out. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Jordan Ross' Thumper, direct from YouTube: Troubled new girl Kat Carter (Eliza Taylor) struggles to fit in with her...
