Actors are often faced with walking a tightrope between their creative ambitions and the strict guidelines laid down by the all-powerful Marvel Studios. One such actor, Anthony Mackie, who has played the iconic character Falcon / Sam Wilson / Captain America in several MCU films, recently opened up about the creative constraints that actors face behind the scenes.
Mackie has made a name for himself as an action star thanks to his work as Captain America. Of course, because of his success as Sam Wilson, the actor, 45, has been able to venture outside of the comic book industry. This includes his starring role (John Doe) in the Twisted Metal series. How was his time working away from MCU, then?

Twisted Metal is a video game franchise that began in 1995 on the original PlayStation. David Jaffe, brought gamers a zany world that involved vehicular combat and cool character design. Winning a simple demolition derby served as the game’s main premise and goal. Between now and then, multiple sequels were released, with the last one being in 2012, although the franchise then lay dormant for around ten years.
Then in 2021, it was officially announced that Anthony Mackie would lead a Twisted Metal TV series that would feature iconic characters and imagery from the game, but would tell a unique, original story. The show premiered in the US in July of 2023, but it is being aired in the UK for this first time on Paramount+ later this month, on March 21 2024.

With Peacock’s Twisted Metal adaptation getting the green light for a second season, showrunner Michael Jonathan Smith and team dropped a few tidbits during an interview with NBC Insider on what to expect for season 2. That includes not only the focus on the tournament itself, but also the appearance of several more fan favorites from the video game series.
“I’m really excited,” says Smith. “We have an amazing team of writers and we’re discussing the arc of the season and what the first episode might be, looking at the big picture.” Among the characters the team is looking to introduce in the show, tournament organizer Calypso will finally be making an appearance, along with Dollface (who in Peacock’s adaptation is John Doe’s long-lost sister), Mr. Grimm, and perhaps the most challenging for the showrunners, Axel.

When the TV series based on the popular video game franchise Twisted Metal made its premiere on the Peacock streaming service back in July, it quickly became one of Peacock’s top five original series, racking up 400 million viewing minutes in its first weekend and earning the honor of being the streamer’s “most-binged” premiere. Now season 2 is moving full steam ahead, and showrunner Michael Jonathan Smith (who also happens to be a writer on Cobra Kai) has given Syfy Wire an update, saying the writers room has been assembled for season 2 and he feels they’re going to deliver something wild.
Smith is excited to be working with characters like Dollface, Mr. Grimm, and Axel, although working a couple of those into the grounded world established in the first season presents a challenge. As he said, “(Mr. Grimm) is my favorite and I’m excited to capture what the fans are excited about seeing,...

If you went back in time to the year 2000 and told me that in 2023, one of my favorite new TV shows would be based on the "Twisted Metal" video games, I would have screamed at the top of my lungs, because time travel isn't real. But also, I would not have believed you, because the people in my life at that time who were most passionate about "Twisted Metal" were the human embodiment of a WWF promotional T-shirt that wished to be a real boy and that one scrawny goth kid in every grade that could randomly kick everyone's ass at the flexed arm hang in gym glass. And yet, the Peacock series is a total blast, and anyone smart enough to actually sit back and watch it will likely say the same. Unless they hate buff clowns driving ice cream trucks full of explosives or something.

Get ready to clown again behind the wheel as Peacock has announced a second season of Twisted Metal. Executive producer and series star Anthony Mackie revealed the news Thursday night. The announcement came during The Game Awards at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. Twisted Metal is nominated for Best Adaptation.
The television series is based on the popular PlayStation video game from the 90s. The half-hour live-action is described as a high-octane action comedy, and written by Michael Jonathan Smith. Season 1 of the series follows a motor-mouthed outsider ( Anthony Mackie) who is offered a chance at a better life, but only if he can successfully deliver a mysterious package across a post-apocalyptic wasteland. The wasteland is filled with popular characters made popular in the game.
There has been no word by Peacock on a release date, but be sure to check back soon, when more information about season 2 becomes available.

Peacock’s “Twisted Metal” is more than a dystopian series about bloodthirsty cars trying to blow each other up into smithereens. But for the show that switches gears between complete chaos and edgy rom-com, the infamous vehicles adapted from the popular video game franchise had to be characters of their own. Creating them was a balance in aesthetics, practicality, safety, and of course, budget — an assembly line of challenges faced by production designer Victoria Paul and picture car coordinator Ty Guidroz.

After a concerning lead-up to the show’s release, Sony‘s Twisted Metal is doing donuts around audience expectations! The car combat-oriented comedy series is Peacock’s “most-binged” comedy premiere, with the average account watching roughly three episodes per sitting, with some opting to knock the entire season out in one glorious shot. The Twisted Metal Peacock premiere is an outstanding sign for Sony’s future adaptations of popular gaming properties.

Sony Pictures Television Studios president Katherine Pope says the company is being “methodical and thoughtful” about which video game IPs it turns into television series.
“We are so lucky to have such a strong relationship with our partners at PlayStation, and we absolutely are continuing to build more and more series together. With its rave reviews, three-month window of cultural supremacy and 24 Emmy nominations, HBO’s The Last of Us gave all subsequent game-to-screen translations an exhilarating new freedom. It’s no longer necessary for an adaptation to bear the weight of an entire genre’s credibility. “Greatness” has been achieved and it’s now fully acceptable for a video game adaptation to simply be “decent.”
Huzzah!
Peacock’s new series based on the venerable and versatile Twisted Metal franchise is — and I mean this generally as a compliment — quite decent. Both as colorful and as deep as a shimmering oil slick on a sweltering stretch of abandoned blacktop, Twisted Metal lacks the budget and ingenuity to consistently live up to the game’s sense of unrelenting mayhem. But its limitations make room for a solid character-based story to develop around stars Anthony Mackie and Stephanie Beatriz.

Five minutes into Peacock’s new horror comedy series “Twisted Metal,” it’s evident that the main character of John Doe – an amnesiac driver transporting goods across a war-torn nation – was written more as a vehicle for Anthony Mackie than for the gamers that sustained the original Sony Playstation franchise that inspired it.
Originally a wildly popular 1995 vehicular combat battle game, “Twisted Metal” has had over ten iterations and is the longest-running original title on the platform. The Peacock series is a live-action comedic adaptation created by Rhett Reese & Paul Wernick and written by Michael Jonathan Smith (“Cobra Kai”).
Those looking for a faithful video game adaptation should hold their applause until the end. Unlike recent shows like “The Last of Us” or “Halo,” the source material for this show is too convoluted to be adapted directly. However, those looking for sequences of vehicular-related carnage should be pleased.

There wasn't ever particularly great continuity between the games, so each had its own unique story and reason for the Twisted Metal competition, but many of the characters returned again and again, allowing fans of the franchise to really develop their favorites. Of all of the characters in the games, from motorcycle-riding reaper Mr. Grimm to tank-driving serial killer Kane to Dragula-driving musician Rob Zombie, perhaps the most famous is the killer clown Sweet Tooth, who drives a tricked-out ice cream truck.
The upcoming "Twisted Metal" live-action series on Peacock looks like it's just as wild as its video game counterparts, and that means they needed a Sweet Tooth to match. The creepy killer clown is portrayed physically by wrestler Samoa Joe, with...

With the WGA currently picketing and a looming SAG-AFTRA strike already impacting San Diego Comic-Con with several film and TV companies, i.e. Marvel, Lucasfilm, Sony, Universal, Netflix skipping, Lord knows what a truncated and tamer Comic-Con is going to look like from July 19-23, especially after an explosive 2022 which repped the confab’s return to in-person after going dark for two years during Covid for 2020 and 2021. However, here’s a glimpse at the first 3-days. Some shows and movies have promised cast appearances, but that’s still Tbd given that the SAG-AFTRA contract expires on July 12, and actors aren’t permitted to promote their wares during a work stoppage. There are some big pieces of IP below, read the new Peacock John Wick spinoff series, The Continental and Paramount’s Seth Rogen produced Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, as well as Jamie Lee Curtis, Tj Miller and...

Peacock Original series “Twisted Metal” has unleashed a brand new “explicit” trailer this afternoon, labeled as such for one particularly gory scene featuring the villain Sweet Tooth.
The latest trailer for Peacock’s action-comedy series also puts the spotlight on the automobile action you’d expect from a “Twisted Metal” series, which surprisingly hasn’t been much of a focal point of the marketing up to this point. Watch the brand new trailer below.
“Twisted Metal” premieres on July 27, 2023, only on Peacock.

Peacock has released a trailer for its forthcoming series Twisted Metal — two of them, actually, one of which is billed as a “clean version” and bleeps out a number of profanities.
But if you’re interested in a series based on the Twisted Metal video game series, a few curse words probably aren’t going to be an issue.
The trailer offers a much larger look at the series, which stars Anthony Mackie as delivery driver John Doe, than an earlier teaser did. John sets the scene with voiceover narration: “Twenty years ago, the world fell to shit. Cities put up walls to protect themselves and threw the criminals out to fight over what was left.”
John is hired (by guest star Neve Campbell’s character) to pick up and deliver a package to New San Francisco. Along the way, he takes on a passenger (Stephanie Beatriz) — who hitches a...

Peacock's take on the Twisted Metal franchise looks to have nailed the tone of the beloved Playstation video game series.
The streaming service went public with the official trailer Monday morning, boasting a compelling post-apocalyptic tale with fine acting and comedy.
There's plenty of comedy, and the series has picked an excellent cast to tell this thrilling tale.
In this universe, the government erected big walls to close certain people out of the big cities, leaving everyone else to fight for what's outside.
It's a decent concept that seemingly translates very well to the screen.
Anthony Mackie plays John Doe on the series, a man well-known for finding things.
He's tasked with completing a missing for Neve Campbell's Raven, and his demands for payment aren't what you'd expect from someone battling for survival.
Along the way, he meets Stephanie Beatriz' Quiet, a lady who doesn't speak very much... until she's caught up in conflict.

The lineup for the 2023 San Diego Comic-Con has been unveiled, giving attendees – and those refreshing their browsers the entire weekend – a little less to look forward to but still plenty of panels, reveals and anniversary spotlights. The 2023 Comic-Con is a far more limited affair this year due to major players like Marvel, Sony, Universal, Disney, and more dropping out at least partly due to the ongoing Writers Guild of America strike. And with deadlines on the potential Screen Actors Guild strike quickly approaching, could only harm the event even more.
Here are some of the highlights of the 2023 San Diego Comic-Con:
