Film festivalgoers still have an opportunity in the coming months to attend screenings of writer and director Pedring Lopez's new action horror, Nilalang (The Entity). The film hit an unfortunate snag late last year upon its release following its ceremonial presentation at the Metro Manila Film Festival, but it hasn't stopped the film from garnering some much deserved attention in the months since. And not for nothing either as the film is easily one of the most solid pieces of work coming out of the Philippines in recent memory with leading man Cesar Montano starring alongside former adult entertainer, actress Maria Ozawa making a career milestone of her own. For this and all its international appeal, a new trailer began making the rounds this week...

(I cannot start with a joke for fear of eclipsing the entire film...) Tomomatsu's "Karei Naru Erogami-ke No Ichizoku: Shinsô Reijô Wa Denki Shitsuji No yume O Miru Ka" (aka. "Erotibot" as it is known in Western markets, or even "Nippon Splatterotics 3") sure looks appealing on paper: a humorous and somewhat naughty take on the humanoid android sub-genre, written and directed by one of the co-creators of the very funny "Vampire Girl vs. Frankenstein Girl". That kind of low-budget cinema has to be gimmicky to stand out, and you can hardly get more gimmicky than casting Japan's current most popular pornstar Maria Ozawa in your science fiction comedy. Apparently science fiction agrees with her because she went on to act in "Tokyo Species", which...

Invitation Only
Stars: Maria Ozawa, Byrant Chang, Julianne Chu | Written by Sung In, Carolyn Lin | Directed by Kevin Ko
Five young strangers are unexpectedly invited to an extravagant and exclusive party at which they have the times of their lives, mingling with the rich and the beautiful. That is until they find the brutally decapitated body of one of their group and begin to figure out the true theme of the evening. The remaining four become the prey of a vicious and relentless killer for the entertainment of their sadistic hosts. As the night progresses, the only ambition they have left is to get out alive.
Heralded as Taiwan’s first ever slasher movie, Invitation Only has more in common with the so-called “torture porn” antics of Hostel than the classic slasher movie genre. The film takes all the cliches from years of American horror cinema and blends them together...

Hailed as Taiwan's first ever slasher horror movie, Invitation Only is due out on English subtitled (Hk R3) DVD next week. Director Kevin Ko does a good job of ticking off the sex, blood and gore staple requirements of a splatter fest, with some gratuitous nudity thrown in for good measure. Bryant Chang and TV star Jerry Huang lead the cast, whilst "Adult" movie siren Maria Ozawa shows of her assets (and of course acting skills!) for all she’s worth. Invitation Only is released on September 10th.
