Producer Arbaaz Khan has opened up on why the story of ‘Patna Shuklla’ starring Raveena Tandon, is important to tell, saying it had to be told to create conversations about education scams.
‘Patna Shuklla’ revolves around the uncommon journey of Tanvi Shukla (Raveena), a common woman, who takes matters into her own hands when she sees a student entangled in a roll number scam, and soon realises that she is pitted against a Chief Minister candidate.
Arbaaz said: “When I read the script of the film, I was inspired by it. It evoked so many emotions in me, it was unreal, even though I’ve not experienced something like this in real life, the way characters navigated each experience was so relatable and of course Raveena.”
“I couldn’t have imagined anyone else playing Tanvi Shukla. From the minute I read about Tanvi and Raveena being in the talks, I...

Gulmohar (Disney+Hotstar)
Directed by Rahul V Chittella
Rahul V Chittella has worked extensively with Mira Nair. It shows in his debut film. Gulmohar is like Mira’s Monsoon Wedding without a wedding, or for that matter, even a semblance monsoonal bliss.
There is a peculiar sterility and joylessness about the characters, scattered and rudderless even as they speak repeatedly about keeping the family together, they seem to have little interest in actually sharing the same roof.
Chittella and his co-writer Arpita Mukherjee spread out the plot onto a wafer-thin canvas. For such a tediously skimpy scenario to come alive, one needed a more dedicated storytelling and performances. Tragically the actors seldom get a chance to have a say, let alone cohere in a familial clasp.
This family doesn’t believe in group hugs. The matriarch Kusum Batra(Sharmila Tagore) makes much out of keeping the family together. But she...

Hit: The First Case
Starring Rajkummar Rao, Sania Malhotra, Jatin Goswami,
Written & Directed by Sailesh Kolanu
One can always depend on Rajkummar Rao to carry a film to its finish even if the material tends to stumble at crucial points. As it does in this thriller, Hit, a remake of the Telugu film of the same title where Vishwak Sen played the troubled cop looking for two missing girls, one of them his life partner.
The set-up is intriguing and skilled cinematographer S Manikandan who also shot the original telugu film, uses the Udaipur locales to create the visual equivalent of a calm ocean with rumbles within. The director uses extraneous props such as the background score to create a sense of distant foreboding.
The film’s biggest Usp is some of the talented cast. There are some well-honed actors in supporting role including Milind Gunaji, a very dependable actor...

OTTThis has not been a good year for Netflix India, who seem to be working with popular names but creating poor content.Saraswati DatarThere is no other way to say it. I have perhaps the lowest tolerance to horror or scares of any kind. But as I sat through the four increasingly painful episodes of Betaal, now streaming on Netflix, I was reminded of Joey’s reaction to Chandler dressed as a pink bunny. So, to Netflix, I ask, “Dude, what happened?” The series is produced by Blumhouse Television, Sk Global and Shah Rukh Khan’s Red Chillies Entertainment, and created by Ghoul showrunner Patrick Graham. Zombie thriller meets Indian folklore’s Vikram-Vetaal or Betaal here, is a great one-line pitch for a show. But, creator Patrick Graham and his co-writer Suhani Kanwar throw in the legacies of colonialism, the dangers of neo-colonialism, corporate greed, and even a splash of...

It starts with a roar, literally. Unseasonal floods envelope Kerala, as journalist Prateik Babbar, looking distinctly befogged as though caught on the wrong foot (age), almost drowns in the devastation. If he had, we would have been spared the effort of wading through the calamitous climate.
"This is serious," say the ecological experts who huddle together in an important looking techno-office as though waiting for the cricket scores at the Ipl match.
Serious is how novelist Aroon Raman meant to pitch his environmental warning. As directed by Soumik Sen (who last did the underrated "Cheat India"), "Skyfire" comes across as a half-hearted attempt to capture the bite and the warning in the novel.
Firstly, the screenplay compresses all the wrong plot-points, plays up episodes that look dramatic, but also underdeveloped. The Muslim policeman (played rather effectively by Jatin Goswami) has to be honest and duty-bound.
There's a madman who roams...

Actor Jatin Goswami, who featured in Babumoshai Bandookbaaz, will make his digital debut with sci-fi show "Skyfire", in which he essays an intelligence agent.
Jatin said: "I'm playing the character Sayed Ali Hassan, an intelligence agent who is brutally honest. He is on this once-in-a-lifetime kind of case that takes him to some extremely dark places."
"In solving the case, he is sucked into a freaky chain of events. It is a gritty, edge-of-the-seat sci-fi thriller," added the actor, who also has appeared in the film Hum Chaar.
"Skyfire" will premiere on May 22 on ZEE5. The show also features Prateik Babbar, Sonal Chauhan and Jisshu Sengupta.
The story revolves around the drastically changing weather that brings life to a standstill, as well as touches upon human trafficking and children going missing in Delhi. Amidst all this tension, an intelligence agent, a journalist and a teacher go on a hunt to solve the mystery.
