Despite a prolific career stretching back almost two decades, the British-born Joe Wright rarely comes up in conversations about generational best filmmakers. At minimum, Wright should be, but given his predilection for period adaptations and not contemporary ones, he’s seen, if not a second-rate talent, then a second-tier one. It’s not particularly fair to Wright or the oeuvre he’s carefully crafted over close to 20 years, beginning with the visually sumptuous adaptation of Jane Austen’s Pride & Prejudice in 2005, turning the then little-known Keira Knightly into a certifiable movie star practically overnight, through Atonement two years later, and skipping a few films and years, Darkest Hour...

Season 2 of His Dark Materials will feature the talents of someone who’s been Superman’s (kinda) dad and also one of his greatest enemies.
Terrence Stamp, who voiced Jor-El in Smallville and played General Zod in the Superman films, has signed on to portray Giacomo Paradisi in the HBO series. As readers of Philip Pullman’s book trilogy know, Paradisi shows up in the novel series’ second installment, The Subtle Knife, as the onetime bearer of the titular weapon.

Dark Phoenix doesn’t just suck big time. It’s the worst movie ever in the X-Men series. That’s 12 films since the first X-Men in 2000. Even series low points — that’s you X-Men Apocalypse — offered compensations. The degree of awfulness is surprising since the man falling into the abyss with this Phoenix is debuting director Simon Kinberg, who has served long and well as the series producer and sometimes screenwriter. Shouldn’t he know these characters best? You’d think.

The entire cast of X-Men thrilled fans at Comic-Con by uniting on stage Saturday in the San Diego Convention Center's largest hall.
Ian McKellan, Patrick Stewart, Halle Berry, Anna Paquin, Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender, James McEvoy, Ellen Page, Peter Dinklage, Hugh Jackman and others made for an impressive panel.
Director Bryan Singer also gave fans a first look at X-Men: Days of Future Past, which is currently filming in Montreal.
McKellan said he was happy to be back in California at Comic-Con.
"I feel safe here now that you got rid of Prop. 8," he said, referring to the recently abolished law that prohibited same-sex marriage.
"I'm looking for a husband," he said. "It's great to meet you, Michael."
Fassbender blushed.
McKellan also said that the friendship he developed with Stewart making the X-Men movies led the two to work together on Broadway in two productions this fall.
