Fans of anime know it well: a new dawn is upon us, with similar styles of animation and storytelling hailing from other countries that are not Japan. One of the titles that made it abundantly clear was Solo Leveling. The hit anime series is not based on a manga, but rather a manwha — a manga-style comic book made in South Korea. Even though Solo Leveling brought this type of adaptation to mainstream conversations, another popular title trod the same path before it: Tower of God. If you don't know it, you will be glad to know that Hulu is bringing Season 1 of the series to its catalog on May 27.
The fact that Tower of God and Solo Leveling hail from South Korea has sparked discussions about whether the series can actually be considered anime, but it all comes down to where the show is produced. In both cases, the production team is Japanese and,...

Isekai anime has completely taken over the medium, for better or worse, leaving several of the new/returning anime of each season as entries in the genre. Most anime aficionados are familiar with the archetypes of isekai, namely the idea of overpowered protagonists. This idea has become increasingly trite over the years, namely when a character's power level is intentionally hidden, but a few anime showcase how it can work.
Some of the best isekai make it logical for the protagonists to hide their powers, especially given the rules of this world. This can be seen in Tanya the Evil, where the main character is incredibly pragmatic about her presence. Though the anime isn't an isekai, Solo Leveling also showcased a time when the protagonist needed to hide their powers. Even an isekai parody anime was a great example of this necessary humility, proving that what's become a mere trope...

Spy x Family creator Tatsuya Endo recently kicked off February with a brand-new installment of his beloved manga series. However, the author felt compelled to issue a formal apology on social media regarding the new chapter's length.
Compared to previous installments, Chapter 111 is a relatively short episode that peers into the mind of Anya Forger, the series' adorable child telepath. Shortly after the manga's release, Endo issued a public fan message via his verified X (formerly Twitter) page. "I apologize, due to the year-end and New Year's proofreading schedule, the pages have become extremely short, but considering the content, we are treating it as part of the main story," he wrote. "Thank you for your understanding." The post was accompanied by a humorous illustration of Anya as a butterfly, which also serves as a subtle nod to the chapter's contents.

Sakamoto Daysis a delightful new anime series blending action and slice of life through its main duo: Taro Sakamoto the convenience store worker and his new friend/employee, Shin. Sakamoto is an unusual and memorable shonen anime protagonist. Taro is an ex hit man who got married, settled into domestic life, and even got a "dad bod" to distance himself from his vicious past. Even then, Taro Sakamoto has all the skills of an elite fighter, and sometimes, lets those skills shine through his humble facade.
Sakamoto is practically unique in the world of anime, but there are some characters out there who share some broad similarities with him. These characters share Sakamoto's general vibe, from elite fighters who voluntarily gave up their violent lifestyle to become peaceful members of society, to warriors who can handle themselves in a brawl but vastly prefer peace – and encourage others to embrace peace and love,...

There is no shortage of romance anime dynamics in any genre. However, shonen romances have often shown relationships getting their start when the male protagonist has feelings first. While it doesn’t always happen this way, many male main characters begin their crushes before the female leads. This has remained a popular trope that continues to have its fans to this day.
The best shonen romances where the guy falls first typically feature underdog main characters who see their love interests as too out of their league. The male protagonists are shy initially but grow to have more confidence in the end. This trope is fairly prevalent in romance anime, but these shonen stories are among the best.

Romance is a huge anime genre. While fluffy and cozy romance will always have its place, there are plenty of romance anime with high stakes where far worse can happen beyond a broken heart. Sometimes the stakes have everything to do with the romance, and sometimes it means something as catastrophic as the end of the world.
In a high fantasy romance, a princess may need to team up with her devoted bodyguard to restore her kingdom from a despot. Other fantasy anime stories revolve around fated lovers who lose their lives and find each other over and over. Even contemporary romance couples have a lot to lose should they fail in their goals.

Anime has no shortage of incredibly iconic characters who get fans hyped and move loads of merchandise. Given the success these high-profile characters have brought to their creators, fans might be surprised to learn that their creators aren't always enamored with them. The biggest names behind fan-favorite anime and manga series all have wildly different relationships to their most popular creations.
While some anime and manga creators absolutely love the characters they've crafted, others delight in revealing that some of their most popular characters are the ones they hate the most. Sometimes this is evident in the stories themselves, with the creator finding excuses to keep fan favorites out of the limelight. Still, regardless of how their creators feel, the icons of anime and manga always find a way to weasel themselves back to the forefront of their story and of fan attention.

When it comes to anime, characters use different methods of fighting in battle. Each of them specializes in something, whether it's with weapons, words or even fists. Various characters display excellent swordsmanship, manipulation of ki, and other spectacular and flashy means of engaging their opponents. But nothing is as satisfying as a good punch.
While some characters are known for their knockout power, others can be surprisingly strong in a pinch or even for comic relief. That said, unlike Saitama from One Punch Man, their strength isn't meant to be a (hilarious and genuinely entertaining) gag. And in contrast to a Goku or Vegeta, some of these characters aren't universally powerful, which would make everything they do stronger. Out of the many fist fights throughout different series, these are the ten characters with the strongest punches in all of shonen.

Dandadan’s Okarun has proven to be one of the most powerful characters in the series. His ghostly abilities to move at lightning speed and his incredible durability have made him a perfect candidate to take down spirits and aliens alike. Okaun, in his spirit form, is so powerful that he could even defeat many of the best shonen heroes.
These heroes may be the best in their own shows, but Okarun has them beat in terms of strength and agility. If Okarun were to go head-to-head with any of these shonen characters, Okarun would certainly come out on top. He may have a nihilistic attitude, but he has the endurance to take down any of these shonen heroes with ease.

It's no understatement to say that women are the backbone of anime, naturally making fans try to rank the greatest female anime characters. While male anime protagonists are still generally the norm, anime still offers a wealth of interesting female characters that can't help but steal the show. From strong leading ladies to heart-wrenching love interests, no matter the plot or genre of the anime, female anime characters have captured the hearts of fans.
Though stereotypes might reduce women in anime to one-dimensional love interests, the truth is that women in anime are just as diverse as their male counterparts. Though shojo anime is always a great source of female characters, even shonen anime has its share of interesting women. Anime speeches can be some of the most exciting moments in the entire series. They usually feature a single character speaking to dozens, if not hundreds, of other characters at once, rallying their friends into a moment of pure bravery. Some speeches are much smaller in scale, but leave just as big of an impact on the people who heard them. No matter the nature of the speech, a character going on a several minute tirade to explain their ideals is always fun to watch.
Great anime speeches vary in their purpose. Some are used to encourage troops, others are to reveal hidden truths, but they're all incredibly meaningful. Speeches like Tanya's from Tanya the Evil highlight just how insanely committed their characters are to their cause. Speeches like Erwin Smith's from Attack on Titan also show a brave level of commitment, and are so unreasonably exciting, fans can't...

Strong characters are a dime a dozen in the world of anime, which is why it's so impressive when characters are able to compete with near-demi gods sheerly thanks to their intellect. While a lot of shows are about a strong character, or a character getting strong, smart characters have their own place among anime's elite. Characters like Shikamaru from Naruto are so smart, that they're able to overcome the biggest problems by simply using their brain. Other characters like Ayanokoji from Classroom of the Elite still use their intelligence, albeit for less noble means.
Intelligent characters in anime are always hard to understand. They're thinking a few steps ahead of everyone in their own series, and the viewer as well. It takes a lot of skill to write a character so smart that they're in a league of their own. Whenever an anime series does feature an extra-smart character,...

KonoSuba: God's Blessing on This Wonderful World! is the funniest isekai series of all time. It features one of the most frustratingly lovable cast of characters, a world filled with mystery, and some of the best writing in anime, all genres included. When Satou Kazuma is transported to his new world, he's allowed to bring any one thing with him. When the Goddess Aqua laughs at him during this process, he decides to take her instead, creating a hilarious dynamic within the first episode.
To be a great show like KonoSuba, an isekai series needs to have some element of humor. It also needs to have good animation, and at least decent writing. While no show can truly compare with KonoSuba's outrageous humor, some can get close. Still, there are plenty of isekai series out there that are great for anyone who loves watching Kazuma, Darkness, Aqua, and Megumin bumble their way to success.

Overlord is a popular isekai series that marries brutality and humor to create a hilarious show that's not afraid of exploring darker themes. The star at the center of the series is Ainz Ooal Gown. One-man-army moments in anime can capture the feeling of a single character being strong enough to take on legions of foes. While there are plenty of powerful people in anime, only a select few have the bloodlust, skill, and otherworldly abilities needed to single-handedly destroy all of their enemies. To be a one-man army, a character can't have any allies to help them. Usually, they become one-man-armies to defend their friends, or in some villain's cases, to go on the offensive.
Every one-man-army moment is a thrill to watch. They're jaw-dropping spectacles filled with great animation and usually end up being some of the best fights in anime. No matter if the one-man-army is fighting for good or for evil, their enemies should be worried. One-man-armies don't go down without a fight, and most times, they don't even go down with a fight either.

Re:Zero - Starting Life in Another World is a bleak isekai anime starring Natsuki Subaru. Subaru is transported to a new world, and like most isekai protagonists, he gets a new power. Unlike most other isekai protagonists, Subaru's power is brutal. Called Return by Death, Subaru's power works exactly as the name implies, as he's allowed to return to a predetermined point in time once he dies. It allows him to solve a lot of the mysteries within the series, but not without dying each time.
To be a good show like Re:Zero, a series doesn't even need to be an isekai. The biggest theme in Re:Zero is how bleak life can be, and thanks to Subaru's relentless determination, how to overcome that bleakness. The best shows that can be compared to Re:Zero have to involve a little bit of darkness, melancholy, and some existential dread at the same time.

Izuku Midoriya or Deku is My Hero Academias most prominent Hero. His inspiring story helps fans all over the world feel motivated to chase after their own dreams.
