How ‘The Other Two’ Cameos Became New York’s Hottest Club
Image
Editor’s Note: The following interview took place before HBO confirmed “The Other Two” would end with Season 3 and The Hollywood Reporter revealed that showrunners Chris Kelly and Sarah Schneider were the subject of an Hr investigation.

“The Other Two” may have definitively ended at HBO Max, but the series’ star-studded celebrity roster unique and untouchable. Season 3 included appearances from Simu Liu, Fin Argus, Ann Dowd, Edie Falco, Ben Platt, Dylan O’Brien, Lukas Gage, Kiernan Shipka, Lawrence O’Donnell, Spike Einbinder, Andrea Boehlke, and Dana Delany — some as themselves, others as hyperspecific characters.

In their three seasons with the show, casting directors Allison Estrin and Henry Russell found the right balance in casting the very meta, very weird, but beloved cult series created by Chris Kelly and Sarah Schneider. In a joint Zoom interview with IndieWire, Estrin and Russell talked about the unique logistics of their roles, a balance between planning...

Edie Falco would complete Emmy triple play with nomination for ‘Bupkis’
Image
Although Edie Falco’s Emmy Awards history began with a successful Best Drama Actress bid for “The Sopranos” in 1999, she has since racked up more comedy nominations than drama ones. After receiving a comedy guest notice for “30 Rock” in 2008, she earned half a dozen lead ones for “Nurse Jackie” between 2010 and 2015, the first of which led to a win. Now, as a Best Comedy Supporting Actress contender for Peacock’s “Bupkis,” she could become the eighth entrant on the list of women who have earned recognition in every possible comedy Emmy category.

After “Nurse Jackie,” “Bupkis” is only the second comedy series on which Falco has played a regular role. Her character, Amy Davidson, is a fictionalized version of series star Pete Davidson’s own mother, who raised him and his younger sister as a single parent after her husband died during the 9/11 attack on the World Trade Center.

When Allison Estrin, who just earned her first Emmy nomination as one of the casting directors of Netflix’s “Inventing Anna,” was offered congratulations on her recognition, she didn’t initially know for which of her projects she had been acknowledged (other eligible shows she had worked on included HBO Max’s “The Other Two” and Showtime’s “Super Pumped: The Battle for Uber”).

“I just started getting a lot of texts and emails saying, ‘Congratulations!’ And I called Henry Russell Bergstein, whom I cast this with — and we also work on a couple of other projects together, like ‘The Other Two’ — and I was like, ‘Wait, do you know what we’re getting congratulations on?'” shared the nominee with Gold Derby in a new webchat, highlighting how “exciting” it was to learn that they had landed their citation for “Inventing Anna.” “This show just has such a special place in my heart.

‘The Other Two’: How Writing For ‘SNL’ Inspired the Creators of Comedy Central’s New Pop Culture Comedy Series
On the surface, Comedy Central’s newest original series “The Other Two” – a show about the flailing older siblings of a pre-teen pop sensation – wouldn’t seem to have that much in common with “Saturday Night Live.” But its creators, Chris Kelly and Sarah Schneider, began coming up with the idea for the show during their second-to-last year as head writers of the iconic sketch comedy show, and in talking to them about it, the connections become quite clear.

“I think as you start to leave ‘SNL,’ you have to figure out what you’re gonna do next. ‘We should try to come up with some TV show,'” Kelly said. Kelly had been branching out already, making his film directorial debut with the Sundance favorite “Other People,” but to him returning to TV made sense: “I didn’t really think about it that way other than it seemed fun...

The Casting Society of America has announced the nominees of its 31st annual Artios Awards. J.J. Abrams' "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" is among the nominees in its Big Budget Drama category. According to its site, "Artios" from the ancient Greek, meaning "perfectly fitted." So how fitting! Here's more info on the Artios Awards:

In October of 1985 the Casting Society of America presented the first-ever Artios Awards for Excellence in Casting at an awards luncheon. Held in the Crystal Room of the Beverly Hills Hotel, the event was attended by more than 500 industry leaders and seven Csa members were honored for their work in four different casting categories. 5 Pieces of Must-Know Casting News
In case you didn’t get your fill of Alec Baldwin and Salma Hayek’s zany relationship on “30 Rock,” the charismatic characters will be getting tipsy together in “Drunk Parents.” Noting the self-explanatory title, the film will find two empty nesters drinking their cares away after their daughter goes off to college; hilarity and bad decisions ensue. Allison Estrin and Henry Russell Bergstein are the designated casting directors for the feature. Fred Wolf will direct the New York–based production that’s looking to kick off in mid-January. Bryan Cranston is tackling Nathaniel Hawthorne in his next big-screen venture, “Wakefield.” The film, based on Hawthorne’s short story of the same name, follows a man who suddenly leaves his wife and disappears in an effort to detach from his life. But when his estate is settled and his wife, assuming her widowhood, restarts her life, he reappears. Robin Swicord will...

'Guardians,' 'Whiplash,' and… '12 Years a Slave' (throwback!) among Casting Society’s nominees
Francine Maisler
Because the Casting Society of America shifted the date of its Artios Awards, this year’s nominees include films released theatrically from July 1, 2013 to Dec. 31, 2014, paving the way for last year’s Best Picture winner to nuzzle its way into contention along with 2014 hopefuls like "Birdman," "Boyhood," and "Selma." With categories ranging from Big Budget Drama to Low Budget Comedy, nearly every film that one expects to make the cut made the cut. And then some. The Csa’s nominees put "Guardians of the Galaxy" side by side with "Wolf of Wall Street," "Whiplash" with "Inside Llewyn Davis," and Disney’s "Planes" with "Frozen." If you were dreaming of a re-evaluation of "We’re the Millers," your time is now. 2015’s bicoastal Artios Awards will be hosted by Patton Oswalt (Los Angeles) and Michael Urie (New York City). The evening will also honor two-time Academy Award®-nominee Richard Linklater ("Boyhood...

The Casting Society of America has super-sized its Artios Awards feature film nominations this year, honoring 42 different films and putting some of 2014’s top contenders in categories where they’ll compete against 2013’s awards movies.

For its 30th annual ceremony, the awards for casting directors have moved from their usual fall slot to a late-January date that placed them in the middle of awards season. To accommodate the new date, this year’s eligibility period spanned 18 months instead of a single year, encompassing films released in the second half of 2013 and all of 2014.

New NYC Casting Company Opens Its Doors
Allison Estrin fell for the camaraderie that exists on independent film productions during her years working under casting director Kerry Barden. “He really set the groundwork for what independent film casting is,” she told Backstage. “He helped me fall in love with the entire process of working on independent films.” Estrin spent six years at Barden/Schnee in New York before deciding recently to hang her own shingle with Casting Collective in New York City. But before that could happen, she needed to find some partners. Enter Henry Russell Bergstein and Matthew Maisto, who were both eager for the same opportunity. “The great thing about the three of us is we come from very different backgrounds and have all dabbled in all three mediums between film [Estrin], TV [Maisto], and theater [Bergstein],” she said. Two months after opening its doors, Casting Collective is casting the Dylan Thomas biopic “Dominion”—“a beautiful, small film,...

Ifp Announces The 34th Edition of Independent Film Week - Industry Activities, plus Project Forum Slate
In the early 80s a small group of filmmakers, including myself, under the invitation of Sandra Schulberg gathered at NYC's 92nd Street 'Y' to found a filmmaker-run and oriented organization to facilitate networking and 'to give us a voice'. I am still very happy with the result as seen in today's 34th edition of Independent Film Week.

Ifp is announcing its industry activities for the 34th edition of Independent Film Week, as well as the 2012 slate of 165 new films in development selected for its esteemed Project Forum.

Independent Film Week takes place September 16-20, 2012 at various locations throughout Lincoln Center and is a one-of-a-kind event that brings the international film and media community to New York City to advance new voices and projects on the independent scene. The event is purely focused on supporting the future of storytelling by nurturing and providing opportunities for both emerging and established artists to connect with the financiers, executives, influencers and decision-makers in film, television, new media and cross-platform storytelling that can help them complete their latest works and connect with audiences.

Expanding from its core mission Ifp's Film Week has been re-focused to ensure that artists, industry and audiences have the educational, networking and access opportunities necessary to create and enjoy work across a variety of platforms. The Week provides multiple ways for the independent film and media communities to come together.

These include:

•Project Forum which facilitates over 2,000 meetings for talent with new projects in development;

•Future Forward Industry Initiatives allow established professionals to meet to discuss new opportunities in creative media, as well as debate key issues critical to the future of visual storytelling;

•Filmmaker Conference Offering audiences the opportunity to discuss the future of film;

•Filmmaker Magazine - Celebrating tomorrow’s filmmakers today through Ifp’s signature publication, celebrating its 20th Anniversary this year.

“Ifp is proud to present this year’s Independent Film Week, which includes a truly original, exciting, and diverse slate of U.S. and international projects that are sure to pique the interest of our attending industry friends,” said Joana Vicente, Executive Director, Ifp. “Not only does Film Week remain an important space for filmmakers with unique vision to connect with industry and peers, but it is also a destination for aspiring filmmakers and film fans alike to explore the art and business of 21st century storytelling with the Filmmaker Conference.”

Project Forum

Under the curatorial leadership of Deputy Director/Head of Programming Amy Dotson & Senior Director of Programmer Milton Tabbot, Ifp’s Project Forum has had a prolific history in the independent community supporting independent filmmakers at critical stages in their development processes. 165 U.S. and International projects have been selected for the 2012 Project Forum, evenly split between documentary and narrative features. Projects hail from the U.S., throughout Europe and Canada, as well Australia, Columbia, Dubai, Hong Kong, India, Israel, New Zealand, South Africa and Turkey.

This year’s selection of docs includes a range of stories equally divided among - and embedded within - the American political and social landscape, the international scene, history, and the arts world – with new projects from an exciting lineup of new and established indie filmmakers.

In addition, SAG Indie’s Emerging Narrative Reading will highlight short excerpts from new work by upand-coming writer/directors, featuring a live reading from leading independent actors cast by Paul Schnee and Alison Estrin of Barden/ Schnee Casting (Winter’s Bone, The Help).

The Ifp organization championed the early work of pioneering independent filmmakers Charles Burnett, Todd Haynes, Mira Nair, Michael Moore, Joel and Ethan Cohen, Kevin Smith, and Todd Solondz. Recently, it has also played a vital role in launching the first films of many of today’s rising stars on the independent scene.

Future Forward Industry Initiatives

Film Week also consists of a number of initiatives aimed at expanding the networks and educating established film and media professionals on issues prevalent within the art and business of 21st Century storytelling and audience engagement.

• Ifp Producer of Marketing & Distribution Labs - Ifp & director Jon Reiss (Bomb It!) have created the world’s first Producer of Marketing & Development (Pmd) Labs, a six month fellowship providing select producers, marketing and digital strategists the tools and networks necessary to create a audience engagement strategy for select feature films from Ifp’s 2012 Independent Filmmaker Labs.
