Luke Cage's MCU Future Gets Uncertain Update From Mike Colter
Image
Mike Colter's last appearance as Luke Cage was in 2018. While fans are hopeful the character will reappear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Colter isn't so sure about his future as Power Man.

Speaking with ComicBook.com to promote the upcoming fourth and final season of Evil, Colter shared what it would take to return as Luke Cage, admitting that he "would totally entertain a good script and idea that made sense." However, while MCU fans would like to see all the Netflix/Marvel heroes revived under Marvel Studios, Colter revealed that he's perfectly fine never playing Luke Cage again. "I don't stay up at night thinking about it, nor do I recall it unless someone brings it up," Colter added. "But I enjoyed my time. I don't look in the past. If something comes up, great, we'll talk about it. But right now, I'm [past it]."

Luke Cage Showrunner Shares Episode Titles for Scrapped Third Season of Netflix Series
Image
Luke Cage showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker recently revealed that, had Netflix renewed the Marvel series for a third season, songs by the rap group Public Enemy would have been used for the episodes' titles.

Answering some fan questions on X (via ComicBook.com), Coker shared some new details as to where Luke Cage would have gone after Season 2, which ended with the title character becoming the new Godfather of Harlem. While not divulging too much, he dropped a list of 13 Public Enemy songs that fans quickly figured out would have been the episode titles for Season 3. Those familiar with Luke Cage will know that Coker used a different hip-hop group and their songs as inspiration for the episode titles in each season; Season 1 was based on songs by Gang Starr, while Season 2 pulled from Pete Rock & Cl Smooth.

That album — Gang Starr’s first since 2003’s The Ownerz — served as DJ Premier’s tribute to his late duo partner Guru, who died in 2010. For the “Founders Remix,” Premier reenlisted rapper Big Shug, one of the MCs who frequently collaborated with the duo as part of their Gang Starr Foundation.

DJ Premier has offered up a new Gang Starr track, “Glowing Mic,” a bonus cut on the instrumental version of last year’s One of the Best Yet, which is set to arrive at midnight, December 11th.

“Glowing Mic” boasts a laidback groove, with DJ Premier topping a steady drum and bass sway with a languid guitar line, cool horns and some deft orchestral touches throughout. DJ Premier Has a Lot to Say About Gang Starr’s First New Album in 16 Years
The 2010 death of Guru, the rapper who created indelible tracks like “Dwyck” and “Mass Appeal” as half of pioneering 1990s hip-hop group Gang Starr, seemed to both cement and finalize the group’s legacy. The group hadn’t released an album since 2003’s The Ownerz and, in subsequent years, saw a falling out between Guru and his producer, the long-revered DJ Premier, over everything from ego to the rapper’s problems with alcohol.

Still, Guru remained prolific in the years following The Ownerz. “He was always known to record all the time,...

Hits Are Fleeting, but Crudo Means Raw Makes Messages That Last
Colombia’s viral chart is generally awash in tuneful reggaeton — the dominant sound of commercial pop in that country, with its tightly programmed beats and curt rumbles of bass. But in June 2018, an unusual song rocketed to the top of the Spotify ranking: “La Mitad De La Mitad” by Crudo Means Raw. The looping rhythm section evokes old funk records, rather than laptop wizardry, and instead of sketching tales of love (or at least lust), the lyrics rallied against new anti-drug laws in the country.

“La Mitad De La Mitad...

Mike Colter in Luke Cage (2016)
‘Luke Cage’ Season 2: All the References, Cameos, Crossovers, and Easter Eggs in Each Episode
Mike Colter in Luke Cage (2016)
[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers for “Luke Cage” Season 2, including the finale.]

“Luke Cage” series creator Cheo Hodari Coker is a longtime comic book fan, and it shows with the number of fun Easter eggs he includes in the show’s first outing. Since then, Netflix’s Marvel world has expanded, and therefore in Season 2, the show doesn’t hold back when it comes to pop culture references and full-blown crossovers. Many are obvious, but some are for diehards or eagle-eyed, pause-button-happy fans.

“Luke Cage” is the type of show that references the Avengers but never names them. It also exists in the present but feels retro thanks to the heavy ‘90s hip-hop influence and nods to the original comics when Luke Cage (Mike Colter) was drafting off the blaxploitation craze. Check out all the Easter eggs and pop-culture references we could find below, and let us know what we’re missing in the comments.

My 5: Mike Posner's Top Songs to Get Him Through Tough Times
Mike Posner in Conan (2010)
Mike Posner may not be the first person you'd expect to have a podcast. After all, he had a hit song in 2009 -- the earworm known as "Cooler Than Me" -- and made an impressive comeback in 2016 after a few years away from the spotlight, namely with his banger, "I Took a Pill in Ibiza."

But if you know Posner, the opportunity for introspection isn't strange at all. In fact, his new podcast, What Does This All Mean?, is a natural extension for the inquisitive Duke University grad. The new series explores what it means to be human, with a recent episode diving deep into his life-changing, chance meeting with Kanye West that ultimately led to a lesson in how to turn failure into success. Posner knows what it's like to reach the heights of fame and also how to find himself again, which makes the difficult journeys he's taking us on with his 10-episode podcast all the more...

Wood Harris, David Call, Tristan Mack Wilds, Antoine Harris, and Afton Williamson in The Breaks (2016)
Exclusive: ‘The Breaks’ Cast Brings ’90s-Era Hip-Hop to Life on VH1
Wood Harris, David Call, Tristan Mack Wilds, Antoine Harris, and Afton Williamson in The Breaks (2016)
Many of the actors on VH1’s new scripted series The Breaks (premiering Monday, Feb. 20) were just kids during the early ’90s era of hip-hop captured in loving detail on the show. Yet, they’re still able to channel the spirit of that moment in the culture’s history because of how far they’ve gone to prepare for their roles.

For Mack Wilds, who also stars on Fox’s racially charged drama Shots Fired, premiering March 22, that meant actually learning how to spin records in order to add to hip-hop producer DeeVee’s skill set. When DeeVee takes part in a DJ battle at NYC’s New Music Seminar on the show, Wilds was prepared to go through the motions.

“I’m the type of guy who, if you put me up against anything that I don’t understand, I’m gonna go try to find out,” says the actor, who also has...

'Luke Cage': Inside Marvel's Hip-Hop Ballad of a Bulletproof Black Man
"We called it 'smack fu,'" Mike Colter says, before breaking into a wide grin. The smile on the face of the Luke Cage star is startling enough, given that the superhero at the center of the latest Marvel/Netflix collaboration spends most of the show's 13 episodes with a somber look on his face since, carrying the world on your ballistics-impervious broad shoulders is serious work. Listening to him discuss his character's brute-strength combat style while nimbly digging through a bowl of sugar cubes for his coffee only adds to the oddness.

‘Luke Cage’ Showrunner Reimagines Harlem as a Hip-Hop Westeros
Mike Colter in Luke Cage (2016)
“Marvel’s Luke Cage” is a vibrant homage to Harlem in all of its cultural, political and yes, even unlawful glory. Thanks to showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker’s background as a music journalist turned TV producer, the famed New York neighborhood is reimagined with the energy of a hip-hop beat and power plays worthy of “Game of Thrones.”

It’s a kingdom based on everyday haunts like Genghis Connie’s Asian restaurant or Pop’s Barber Shop, where Luke Cage (Mike Colter) finds sanctuary after fleeing Hell’s Kitchen. While these establishments appeal to the hoi polloi, the glitterati prefer Harlem’s Paradise. The swank nightclub promises luxury, celebrity entertainment and even scandal thanks to the somewhat crooked ownership by Cornell “Cottonmouth” Stokes (Mahershala Ali), who learned his ruthless ways from his grandmother, who ran illicit businesses back in the day.

Luke Cage: Early Reviews Are In, And It Looks Like Marvel Has Yet Another Winner
Yeah, Marvel Studios is doing some pretty great stuff on the big screen. Their most recent film, Captain America: Civil War was a megahit, both critically and financially, and a lot of folks are really looking forward to where they take this world in their next movie, Doctor Strange. But while their movies are absolutely dominating the box office, Marvel's content on Netflix may very well be an even bigger hit for the hardcore comic book fans. Thus far, we've had two seasons of Daredevil, and one season of Jessica Jones, series that follow two street-level heroes with a more mature tone than your average Marvel Studios film. Their next big release is less than a month away, and comes in the form of Luke Cage, a series that follows the continuing adventures of the Jessica Jones character as he tries to defend Harlem.

The recent trailers for the film...

Daredevil Star Charlie Cox Relishing Screen Partnership With Iron Fist
Having inked a deal to reprise the role of Matt Murdock for a third season of Daredevil, coupled with the advent of next year’s Defenders series, Charlie Cox’s future in Marvel’s TV universe is looking bright.

Bringing a compelling sense of gravity to the Man Without Fear, Cox has certainly impressed in the title role, but beyond his friendship (relationship?) with Rosario Dawson’s Claire Temple, we haven’t really seen Murdock’s stoic lead interact with any Marvel characters outside of Daredevil. Unlike, say, Jessica Jones, who holds an on-again, off-again relationship with Mike Colter’s Luke Cage.

That is, of course, about to change very soon indeed. But the one relationship that has Charlie Cox most excited lies between Daredevil and Danny Rand himself, Iron Fist. While appearing at the Toronto Fan Expo (via Cbm), the British actor was joined by Marvel COO Joe Quesada...

Full List Of Luke Cage Episode Titles Unveiled

Kicking things off with “Moment of Truth” on September 30, you can have a gander at all 13 episode titles below. Whether Coker has gone one step further to arrange the show’s soundtrack in such a way that each tune amplifies the tone of its respective episode is up for question, but thanks to a recent and really rather insightful featurette, we know that music will play a major role in shaping the identity of Netflix’s Luke Cage.

Shifting the superhero action from Hell’s Kitchen to Harlem following Daredevil and Jessica Jones – where Mike Colter introduced Netflix subscribers to Marvel’s Hero for Hire – Coker and his creative team have consistently championed Luke Cage as...

Luke Cage Will Feature Musical Performances From Some Notable Hip-Hop Artists
Luke Cage showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker has confirmed that there will be multiple musical performances on the show and that some of the artists who will appear include Faith Evans, Method Man, Charles Bradley, The Delfonics, and Raphael Saadiq.  This comes on the heels of the teaser attached to the Daredevil season 2 finale being set to Nas' Made You Look and the official Sdcc teaser trailer being set to Ol' Dirty Bastard's Shimmy Shimmy Ya.  Add that to the fact that every episode title is a Gang Starr song and it's very clear that hip-hop permeates all throughout the upcoming Netflix and Marvel collaboration.  That fact alone sets  it apart from the likes of Daredevil and Jessica Jones.    "Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhammad in terms of the score.  We had a 30-piece orchestra - we live scored the entire series.  People don't really do that anymore.  It give...

Mike Colter in Luke Cage (2016)
Netflix Shows ‘Luke Cage’ Teaser Trailer, Renews ‘Daredevil’ for Season 3
Mike Colter in Luke Cage (2016)
“The Defenders” is so close that Comic-Con audiences could almost taste the superhero goodness.

Netflix inundated the crowd gathered in Ballroom 20 of San Diego’s Convention Center Thursday with multiple never-before-seen clips and a teaser trailer for the new series “Marvel’s Luke Cage.” The series follows super-strong and unbreakable Luke Cage (Mike Colter) in a modern-day Harlem. Alas, the clips have not been released (yet), but check out the teaser:

Cheo Hodari Coker, who directed the series, noted that in this day and age, “The world is ready for a bulletproof black man.” He also pointed out that hip-hop had a huge influence on the show — in the soundtrack, with musical guest stars and with its episode titles, all taken from Gang Starr song titles. Coker noted that “Luke Cage” was the “Wu-Tang-ification of the Marvel Universe.”

Another video the panel showed also incorporated footage from “Daredevil,” “Jessica Jones...

Jay Z Finally Breaks His Silence on Beyoncé's Lemonade With a Revealing Rap Verse
Beyoncé
Nearly a month after Beyoncé dropped her groundbreaking visual album, Lemonade, that all but confirmed Jay Z had cheated on her with "Becky with the good hair," the rapper has made a statement of his own. Jay collaborated with Fat Joe, Infared, Rema Ma, and French Montana on the "All the Way Up" remix, where he raps, "You know you made it when the fact / Your marriage made it is worth millions / Lemonade is a popular drink and it still is / Survival of the littlest." What does it all mean, Jay?! Although it might be easy to assume this is the beginning of that rumored comeback album he reportedly has in the works, the latter half of the lyric is a direct reference to a verse from the 1992 song "Dwyck" by Gang Starr ("Lemonade was a popular drink and it still is / I get more props and stunts than Bruce Willis"). On top of that,...

Diddy Always Has $100 in Cash When Mark Ronson Needs It
Amy Winehouse
Before his "Uptown Funk" gave it to us for 14 weeks straight, and before he helped Amy Winehouse go "Back to Black," Mark Ronson worked as a humble club DJ in downtown Manhattan. In conversation with John Seabrook at the New Yorker Festival on Saturday at the Gramercy Theater — where Ronson performed six songs from his latest LP Uptown Special, with fellow producer Jeff Bhasker — the music producer described how Diddy, or Puffy, as he was called back then, helped bring him into the mainstream rap scene with encouragement in the form of a $100 tip.Ronson explained that he cut his teeth spinning at underground venues for such groups as Gang Starr and Brand Nubian; however, the range of celebrity surprisingly changed one night at a club formerly known as El Flamingo, on 21st Street: Then, all the sudden, people like Puffy and Biggie and Jay Z would be coming...

Something About a Dogg Pound Biopic, with Curtis Young Playing His Father (Dr. Dre)...
Whether or not this actually comes to fruition, it's not-so crazy an idea to consider, when, as I've argued previously, that the massive success of "Straight Outta Compton" would likely inspire other "hip-hop biopics." Recently announced, DJ Premier said he was working on a Gang Starr film; and also Chuck D suggested that he would entertain the idea of a Public Enemy bio; and the long-in-development Tupac Shakur project looks like it's alive again, given a recent casting notice I shared on this blog, which indicated Carl Franklin was attached to direct, and an actor to play the lead role is being sought.  And I'm sure there are (or will be) others. In an interview...

After 'Compton' Success, DJ Premier Eyes Gang Starr Biopic
Neil Brown Jr., Aldis Hodge, Corey Hawkins, Jason Mitchell, and O'Shea Jackson Jr. in Straight Outta Compton (2015)
The overwhelming success of N.W.A biopic Straight Outta Compton may cause Hollywood execs to start digging around for more hip-hop backstories to plunder. If veteran producer DJ Premier, who worked with Dr. Dre on the latter's "Animals" track for new album Compton, has his way, his former group Gang Starr will be next on the slate for a biopic.

The producer has begun working with the sister of Keith "Guru" Elam, the rapper who worked with Premier on six albums before passing away in 2010, to turn his vision into reality,...

Argo (2012)
Exclusive: New Argo Poster
Argo (2012)
To misquote Gang Starr, the rep is growing bigger for Ben Affleck, a one-time Hollywood golden boy who's showing all the signs of maturing into a filmmaker of genuine quality and consistency. His latest, Argo, has a new poster that looks pretty nifty too. Love the frazzled looks and outlandish '70s moustaches.A drama-stroke-satire-stroke-thriller, Argo is set in the days of the Iranian revolution. Students and assorted radicals stormed the Us embassy - like that could ever happen again! - and took six Us staffers hostage. A cunning plan is needed and CIA wonk Tony Mendez (Affleck) thinks he might have one. It's a fake sci-fi flick called 'Argo' that's to be filmed in Tehran to form a clever front to smuggle the hostages out of the country. brightcove.createExperiences(); Argo is out in the UK on November 7 but if you can score a ticket, it's showing...
