Lil Rel Howery is set to make his directorial debut and star in the horror comedy Haunted Heist, which will co-star Tiffany Haddish. The film was written by Carl Reid, who co-wrote the script for Hulu's 2024 release Mr. Crocket, a horror movie about a sinister children's television show host. French distribution outfit The Coven, which recently enjoyed big success with Terrifier 3, will distribute Haunted Heist.
The plot, according to Deadline, is as follows:
...four estranged friends reunite at what appears to be a typical house. But one friend has ulterior motives; he plans to rob the place and needs their help to find an antique worth a fortune. But the house is straight up haunted, and the group must squash their differences to survive the night and an insane pack of ghosts.
While the entire premise sounds promising, the phrase "insane pack of ghosts" will certainly pique the interest of the horror community.

The Mill is a dystopian science fiction thriller available on Hulu that follows the story of a disoriented businessman who wakes up in an outdoor prison and must push a massive grist mill to ensure his survival and that of his family. Director Sean King O'Grady was drawn to the incredible script of The Mill, which gave a unique perspective on the world we live in through the protagonist's experience, and felt it had to be made into a movie. Working in a confined space like the prison cell presented challenges, but O'Grady relied heavily on the talented actor Lil Rel Howery, who delivered a remarkable performance and truly brought the character to life.

A critique of corporate America with a technological twist, Hulu's The Mill is a single-location thriller with several well-rounded points to make. However, the film can't manage to break away from its claustrophobic location, hindering the narrative. The Mill is an hour and 45 minutes long but could have still successfully conveyed its themes with 20 minutes chopped off the runtime. Lil Rel Howery, who is usually seen as comic relief, delivers a layered and nuanced lead performance here. Despite its many strong elements, the film makes the viewer feel just as trapped as its lead character with its somber tone and tedious pacing.

Helmed by Sean King O’Grady, The Mill is set in a dystopian universe, much like a lengthy Black Mirror episode but with less intrigue. Sean King’s The Mill makes sense in every way, starting from its angry commentary on worker exploitation and the overenthusiastic activity of certain workers, which always raises the bar, becoming a double-edged sword for average employees. The Mill is all about a hard-working employee, Joe, who wakes up inside a prison cell of “Mallard,” a multinational company where he has been working for several years. An emotionless AI-generated voice constantly demanding Joe push a giant grist mill is the ultimate conflict in Joe’s life. However, The Mill decides whether it is possible for the average Joe to find a way out of the prison or if he’ll have to stay in this constant loop until he breathes his last breath.

Hulu’s savage new original film The Mill offers a nightmare vision of corporate America controlled by algorithms that physically, mentally, and emotionally punish employees who don’t achieve their quotas. The movie doesn’t seem particularly far-fetched in 2023, despite its outrageous set-up, which is something that the filmmakers have acknowledged.
“When we filmed The Mill, these discussions were hypothetical. Our film unexpectedly became relevant. But it’s not just about AI or labor. Joe’s tale isn’t merely topical — it’s universal,” director Sean King O’Grady said of the movie. “It’s about feeling trapped in a system that takes more than it gives, feeling like a replaceable cog in a lifeless machine. It's your company or your life — literally — in The Mill. The latest thriller in Hulu’s Huluween lineup gives new meaning to work burnout. Purposely claustrophobic and unsettling, it’s more than edgy enough to provoke thought, even if the film often feels forced when trying to get its main points across.
The Mill chronicles the torturous plight of Joe (Lil Rel Howery), a polished businessman working at a mega corporation named Mallard. If Google, Amazon, and Apple had a threesome, it would be this company. But Mallard is a selfish lover all around. More “give me, give me” than symbiotic flirt. One day, hard-working Joe suddenly wakes up in an ominous open-air concrete cell. How he got in this prison-like structure is not quickly revealed, but the reason he’s there becomes painfully clear: He must meet a daily work quota by pushing a grist mill around in circles...

"You still don't believe the rules apply to you. Perhaps you would respond to other incentives." Hulu has unveiled an official trailer for a sci-fi thriller called The Mill, directed by filmmaker Sean King O'Grady. Yet another new "Huluween" special offering coming to the streaming service in October. A businessman wakes up in an open-air prison cell with only an old grist mill. Forced to work as a beast of burden, he must find a way to escape before the birth of his child. This is so obviously a capitalism metaphor, literally making him grind away at a mill just to make enough for him to one day "be free". Lil Rel Howery stars, along with Pat Healy, Karen Obilom, and Patrick Fischler. This clearly connects back to the brilliant Spanish film The Platform, with a similar concept, both critiquing the endless mill of capitalism. Might be worth a watch.

The BBC is reportedly preparing to renew its crime drama Strike, which is based on the Cormoran Strike books by Jk Rowling.
The news comes weeks after the broadcaster apologised to the Harry Potter author after its news hosts failed to challenge a guest who called the author transphobic.
A sixth season of Strike has yet to be confirmed. However, Deadline’s Jake Kanter reports that the deal is close to being made.
The Independent has contacted the BBC for confirmation.
Season six will adapt The Ink Black Heart, the sixth novel in Rowling’s detective series, which she wrote under her pseudonym, Robert Galbraith.
The adaptation sees Tom Burke take on the role of gruff private investigator Cormoran Strike alongside Holliday Grainger as his partner Robin Ellacott.
Earlier this month, the BBC received 200 complaints after host Evan Davis allowed a guest on Radio 4’s Pm show to claim Rowling...

The Great British Bake Off showrunner Richard McKerrow has admitted that the last series of the show was “not our strongest”.
The cookery competition returned for its 13th series last year, with viewers criticising the complexity of the challenges and claiming that judges Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith were being too harsh.
In a review of the series opener, The Independent’s Sean O’Grady claimed that “there are too many contestants making too many cakes”. Over 5 million viewers tuned in to watch the series finale, down 2 million from the previous year.
Appearing on The Media Podcast, Love Productions chief executive McKerrow said that the production team had taken criticism about the last series “seriously”.
“I’d be the first to hold up our hands and say that I feel that the last series was not our strongest,” McKerrow said. “We’re having lots of conversations, and I think you have...

After starring in the comedy Vacation Friends and its upcoming sequel Honeymoon Friends for the Hulu streaming service, Lil Rel Howery has taken the lead into another Hulu Original: the sci-fi horror movie The Mill. It’s said that The Mill is largely a one-man show, but Scoot McNairy (Monsters), Pat Healy (Station 19) and Karen Obilom (House Party) are also in the cast.
Directed by Sean King O’Grady (We Need to Do Something) from a screenplay by Jeffrey David Thomas (All American: Homecoming), The Mill sees Howery playing the role of a white-collar businessman who mysteriously wakes up in an open-air prison cell containing only an old grist mill. Forced to work as a beast of burden to stay alive, he must find a way to escape before the birth of his child. An image of Howery’s character in the cell can be seen at the bottom of this article,...

Bradley Walsh has denied reports that The Larkins has been cancelled by ITV.
The Chase host stars opposite Joanna Scanlan as Pop Larkin in the channel’s adaptation of H E Bates’ novel The Darling Buds of May.
The series, which follows a family in rural Kent in the 1950s, made its debut in 2021. At the time, it divided critics, with The Independent’s Sean O’Grady calling it “a Brexit television abomination”.
Last week, reports emerged in The Sun claiming that the show was being axed after losing two million viewers between series one and two and alleged “cast disagreements” on set.
However, appearing on This Morning on Tuesday (10 January), Walsh vehemently denied the claims.
Walsh said that he’d “had a few calls” about the rumours which he said were attributed to “some problem with the viewing figures”.

There’s something a bit magical about television on Christmas. Maybe it’s the cold weather driving everyone indoors. The gluttonous, slowly digesting roast dinners pinning everyone to the sofa. The intra-family arguments that need drowning out with noise. For whatever reason, Christmas always seems to be the time when most everyone agrees to convene around the TV screen and watch whatever’s on – an ingrained, sacred ritual somewhat befitting a religious holiday. I’m not sure Christmas TV has ever been less nourishing, however, than this year.
With a few notable exceptions, the UK’s 2022 Christmas TV line-up may have been the worst on record – it’s certainly the worst I can remember. There were a few highlights dotted around the festive period, of course, such as I Hate Suzie Too and a festive Motherland special. Children were well serviced with BBC One’s charming animation The Boy, the Mole,...

Brendan O’Carroll has said that he isn’t fazed by accusations that his show Mrs Brown’s Boys is transphobic.
The Irish actor has starred as matriarch Agnes Brown in the sitcom since 2011, having originally imagined the character for a radio play in 1992.
Over the years, Mrs Brown’s Boys has been near-universally panned by critics, with The Independent’s Sean O’Grady writing that the 2021 Christmas special was “a hellish place where wit has gone to die”.
However, the show has remained hugely popular, with the show returning for a Christmas special once again this year.
Speaking to The Sun, O’Carroll was asked about critics who apparently claim that the show is transphobic for featuring the actor in a female role.
“I don’t think about them, I write the show I write,” he responded.
“I don’t ever think of myself as being a man playing a woman – when Mrs...

Addiction is a scourge on America; it ruins lives, devastates families, and leaves gaping psychic wounds that, in many cases, never heal. This is true whether it's opioid addiction, alcoholism, or an eating disorder. And when it comes to families, the pain and suffering are often passed down, generation to generation.
The 2022 documentary "Our American Family," directed and produced by Hallee Adelman and Sean King O'Grady, shows how for one close-knit Philadelphia family, this reality is all too familiar. Viewers meet the documentary's subjects at a pivotal point in their lives: Nicole is a young mother in rehab who, several months earlier, nearly died of an overdose while alone with her two-year-old daughter, Giovanna. The toddler is now under the care of Nicole's mother Linda and stepfather Brian. Also living in the home is Nicole's brother Chris, who has his own mental health and addiction struggles. The battle lines between the BBC and its former star news presenter Emily Maitlis continue to be drawn, with BBC insiders lending their support after she claimed a BBC board member had interfered in editorial matters as “an active agent” of the Conservative party.
After Maitlis made the claim in her lecture at the Edinburgh TV Festival this week, referring to Robbie Gibb but without naming him – in the context of the BBC making a swift apology and rebuking her after she made political comments on air – The Times reports insiders at the Corporation sharing the same concerns about Gibb’s intrusion into editorial matters.
Before taking his place on the board, Gibb – who used to be the editor of the BBC’s live political programmes – was an aide of former prime minister Theresa May. Now The Times quotes Maitlis’s view on his interference as “widely shared” by her former colleagues,...

Well, this is a doozy of a take on “How I Met Your Father.”
SXSW Grand Jury Prize winner “I Love My Dad” stars Patton Oswalt as Chuck, a desperate father looking to reconnect with his estranged son Franklin, played by writer/director James Morosini. Chuck impersonates a waitress (Claudia Sulewski) online to strike up a relationship with a depressive Franklin, who has blocked Chuck on all forms of social media. The only issue? Well, Franklin metaphorically swiped right on Chuck’s alter ego.
Per an official synopsis, “Things begin to spiral when Franklin falls for this imaginary girl and wants nothing more than to meet her in person, as Chuck has inadvertently catfished his own son.”
“The Sex Lives of College Girls” and “American Horror Story” alum Morosini wrote the screenplay based on his own real family experience.

Magnolia Pictures has acquired North American rights to “I Love My Dad,” one of the biggest breakouts from this year’s SXSW.
Critics loved “I Love My Dad” reserving particular praise for the direction of James Morosini and for Patton Oswalt’s lead performance. The movie, which won the Grand Jury Prize for Narrative Feature as well as the Narrative Feature Competition Audience Award at the festival, certainly gets points for originality. It follows a young man (Morosini) who is catfished by his hopelessly estranged father (Oswalt) in a desperate attempt to reconnect. Blocked on social media and concerned for his son’s life, Oswalt’s character impersonates a waitress online and starts checking in with his son. But things begin to spiral out of control when the son falls for this imaginary girl (Claudia Sulewski) and wants nothing more than to meet her in person.

While time has seemingly ceased to exist in year two of the global pandemic, we’ve had no shortage of entertainment options. More films have had simultaneous theatrical releases and digital releases and most film festivals have been hybrid this year, offering both in-person and virtual access to journalists as well as audiences. We’re hoping this trend continues in 2022 to allow accessibility to all.
With that said, 2021 has been a great year for horror. I’ve been very fortunate to be able to view and cover some truly amazing horror films this year. As the world still feels like it’s in a state of chaos, I’ve continued to turn to horror as a form of therapy. I’ve seen some fantastic horror movies and shows this year that not only provided an escape from reality, but also showcased some wildly talented filmmaking. In no particular order, the...

After a number of years in which it maybe wasn’t the case, it seems like we horror fans are continually spoiled year after year. Every December or January when it comes time to make my list of favorites for Daily Dead, I’m blown away as I look back and see just how many incredible books, films, TV shows, conventions, streaming offerings, DVDs, boutique Blu-rays – you name it – are released in a given year. Though it may have been a challenging disaster in so many other ways, 2021 was no exception when it came to horror. Here are just some of my favorites.
Chucky
As a huge fan of the Child’s Play film series – particularly some of the latter Dtv entries that have taken the franchise into bizarre and exciting new directions – I was out of my mind excited about the new Chucky TV show, which aired on both USA and SyFy.

Scrappy Halloween fare set in a bathroom delivers more whimper than bang in its end-of-the-world horror
A decade ago, Jeff Nichols directed Take Shelter, a remarkably prophetic, big-picture drama with Michael Shannon as a construction worker alienating his loved ones with his insistence on building a bunker in readiness for gathering storms. It may be a sign of a withering US indie sector that this far scrappier genre item aims to generate comparably doomy vibes on a single set measuring barely 40 square feet.
Adapted by Max Booth III from his own novella, Sean King O’Grady’s film unfolds primarily in a domestic bathroom, to which uptight corporate drone Pat Healy, put-upon wife Vinessa Shaw and the couple’s two children are confined after a felled tree dissects their Tornado Alley property. It’s soon clear this is one of those metaphorical bathrooms, representative of a much bigger space. Squandering any...
