“Bohemian Rhapsody” star Lucy Boynton smoulders as 1950s nightclub owner Ruth Ellis in a new image from upcoming ITV drama “A Cruel Love: The Ruth Ellis Story.”
Ellis was the last woman to be hanged in Britain in 1955 after she was convicted of shooting dead her lover, racing driver David Blakely.
Boynton is joined by Toby Jones (“Tetris”), Laurie Davidson (“Cats”) and Mark Stanley (“Trigger Point”) in the four-part series, which promises to expose the British obsession with class, sex and death.
“Set in 1955 in the glamorous and intoxicating world of London club-land, Ruth found huge acclaim, aged 28, as the capital’s youngest club manager,” reads the logline. “But her success soon unraveled as she became entwined in an abusive relationship with racing driver David Blakely. On trial for his murder, Ruth was condemned to hang by a system which judged her for far more than her crime.”

The top honorees at the 2023 Laurence Olivier Awards were plays that focused on cultures outside of London. “My Neighbour Totoro,” which is based on the beloved Japanese film of the same name from Studio Ghibli, won six trophies, the most of the night, including Best New Comedy, Director, and four craft categories. A revival of the American classic “A Streetcar Named Desire” by Tennessee Williams claimed three: Best Play Revival and for lead Paul Mescal and featured player Anjana Vasan. Meanwhile, the British-based “Prima Facie,” which is set to bow on Broadway this month and will thus compete at the Tony Awards, took home two prizes for Best Play and for star Jodie Comer.
The only other productions to win more than one trophy were all musicals. “Standing at the Sky’s Edge” won two of the top prizes: Best Musical and Best Original Score or New Orchestrations. “Tammy Faye,...

Mescal landed the Best Actor award for his reincarnation of Stanley Kowalski in Rebecca Frecknall’s buzzy adaptation of the classic Tennessee Williams play A Streetcar Named Desire. Two new works based on existing material dominated the nominations for the 2023 Olivier Awards, the top theatre honor in Britain. “My Neighbour Totoro” and “Standing at the Sky’s Edge” lead the play and musical fields with nine and eight bids apiece. The former is a stage adaptation of the Studio Ghibli film of the same name, brought to life in a visually stunning production featuring impressive puppetry by Basil Twist. “Standing at the Sky’s Edge” uses songs from the Richard Hawley album and new material to tell the story of three families in a Sheffield housing complex.
Revivals had strong showings, too. Director Daniel Fish’s remounting of “Rodger & Hammerstein’s Oklahoma!” and the Paul Mescal-led “A Streetcar Named Desire” netted seven and six nominations, respectively. This production of “Oklahoma!” previously played Broadway and received eight Tony Award nominations, including wins for Best Revival and Featured Actress...

This year “Succession” swept the drama guest acting Emmy nominations, nabbing seven of the 12 available slots. I thought about that while watching “The Sandman” on Netflix. It’s a supernatural fantasy drama based on a comic book series by Neil Gaiman, the type of TV show that might not normally get on awards voters’ radar even in an era when genre shows like “Game of Thrones” and “Watchmen” collect trophies left and right. Sure the sterling crafts of “The Sandman” may be major players in the year to come, but allow me to make a case for the actors who already make a strong case for sweeping next year’s guest acting races. This post contains spoilers for The Sandman season one and beyond.
“Ideas in abundance.” Believe it or not, that’s a curse pronounced by Morpheus in “Calliope,” one of the best stories in The Sandman. “Ideas in abundance” sounds like a particularly strange curse for The Sandman, the seminal Neil Gaiman comic book series so rich in concepts and themes that the Netflix adaptation retains much of its depth, even as it necessarily cuts or reimagines some elements. Fans of the series will get to see more of those abundant ideas soon, as Netflix has announced a surprise 11th episode to The Sandman season 1, which adapts not only “Calliope” but also another fan-favorite tale, “A Dream of a Thousand Cats.” Both stories flesh out Dream’s world and the rules of the Dreaming but “Calliope” has deep implications for Morpheus’s larger career arc, paving the way for the end of his story.

Dreams don’t always have a habit of coming true, especially when it comes to Netflix giving the green light to people’s favorite shows. While many fans assumed that The Sandman Season 2 is a lock, the Master of the Dreaming himself, Neil Gaiman, says otherwise.
Gaiman posted a cryptic tweet to his Twitter account on Friday, referencing a bonus episode for the first season that’s available to watch now. Before Gaiman revealed the nature of his mysterious message, a fan asked if he was confirming a Season 2 pick-up for the series. Unfortunately, Gaiman says the future of The Sandman is uncertain, and Netflix is playing a game of wait-and-see before opening their wallet for another journey into the Dreaming.

Netflix has released a surprise two-part bonus episode for The Sandman.
Fans had speculated about the possibility of a bonus episode earlier this week when the streamer deleted a YouTube video that reportedly contained unaired footage.
Adapted from Neil Gaiman’s graphic novels of the same name, the 10-part drama series covers 16 editions of the 75-part comic.
It follows the titular Sandman (played by Tom Sturridge), who has been held prisoner for centuries and must travel across worlds and timelines to mend the chaos that’s ensued in his absence.
The new bonus episode covers additional stories from issues 17 and 18 of The Sandman, including an animated version of “A Dream of A Thousand Cats” and a live-action adaptation of “Calliope”.
It will feature newcomers Sandra Oh, James McAvoy, David and Georgia Tennant, Michael Sheen, Anna Lundberg, Arthur Darvill, and more.

Netflix’s hit fantasy series “The Sandman” hasn’t been renewed just yet, but if you want more from the adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s beloved comic book series, your dreams (sorry) just came true.
Right now you can watch “A Dream of A Thousand Cats/Calliope,” a brand new, surprise bonus episode of “The Sandman,” featuring guest stars Sandra Oh, Michael Shannon, James McAvoy, David Tennant, the great Derek Jacobi, and many more.
Like “The Sound of Her Wings” before it, “A Dream of A Thousand Cats/Calliope” combines two different “The Sandman” comic book stories for a single-episode story.
“Calliope,” directed by Louise Hooper and based on “The Sandman” issue #17, follows Richard Madoc, a one hit wonder novelist crippled by writer’s block who is offered a guaranteed cure — for a sickening and cruel price.

The CW made a final decision for Legends of Tomorrow last week, and it was not the news fans expected.
The beloved drama series was canceled after seven seasons, and understandably, the cast is emotional about its demise.
Caity Lotz originated the role of Sara Lance on Arrow back when the show premiered in 2012.
She went on to land a lead role on Legends of Tomorrow, alongside Victor Garber, Brandon Routh, Arthur Darvill, Franz Drameh, Ciara Renée, Falk Hentschel, Dominic Purcell, and Wentworth Miller.
While the rest of the original cast gradually exited the series, Lotz remained a pivotal figure right up to its cancellation.
“I am bummed! I am sad, I’m going to miss it so much,” Lotz shared on Instagram of the announcement.
“I’m going to miss our amazing cast and crew. But at the same time I recognize how lucky have been to play Sara Lance for this long.

Caity Lotz is understandably sad about Legends of Tomorrow‘s cancellation after seven seasons, yet incredibly grateful to have played Sara Lance for so long.
Lotz of course first played Sara aka Black Canary on Arrow in October 2013, and was a steady presence there (brief death and all!) until The CW decided to spin the hero off into a new series that debuted in January 2016 and originally also starred Victor Garber, Brandon Routh, Arthur Darvill, Franz Drameh, Ciara Renée, Falk Hentschel, Dominic Purcell and Wentworth Miller.

One of the defining features of "Doctor Who," for better or worse, is the show's tendency to undo death. Characters like the Master will meet their seemingly final, permanent ends about once or twice per decade, just to pop up again whenever the show feels like bringing them back. "Death is for other people, dear" was the explanation Michelle Gomez's version of the Master gave, after seemingly being blown up in the previous season's finale. Companions like Rory Williams (Arthur Darvill) and Clara Oswald (Jenna Coleman) died repeatedly throughout their time on the show, only to be brought back a few episodes later. (Sometimes, just a few...

HBO recently confirmed that former Doctor Who and The Crown star Matt Smith is going to portray Daemon Targaryen in the upcoming Game of Thrones prequel spinoff, House of the Dragon.
The story, set many years before the events of A Song of Ice and Fire, will chronicle the history of the Targaryens from Aegon’s conquest of Westeros to the Dance of Dragons and the breaking of the once majestic Valyrian house. And while it’s really difficult to imagine the quirky 11th Doctor as a character in the Seven Kingdoms, much less a noble, it’ll be interesting to see what the actor can bring to the role. If anything, Smith has shown such range and talent in his numerous projects over the years that there’s little to no doubt that the performance will be spectacular, if not downright inspiring, even by Game of Thrones‘ standards.

Neil Gaiman has iterated his desire to write a Doctor Who episode for current Tardis incumbent Jodie Whittaker. The writer previously penned two episodes for the show during Matt Smith’s tenure, 2011’s critically acclaimed “The Doctor’s Wife” and 2013’s slightly less critically acclaimed “Nightmare in Silver.” Seven years since his last contribution, Gaiman has now explained to Digital Spy why he’s been unable to return since then, saying:
“Everything to do with anything about Doctor Who is always about time. I love The Doctor. I think Jodie Whittaker is a fabulous Doctor. On the one hand, I’d love to write for her, but on the one hand, I really, really, really wanted to write something for Peter Capaldi, and never got there because I was writing and making Good Omens through the Peter Capaldi years. Good Omens was adored by critics and audiences alike, with particular praise reserved for Michael Sheen and David Tennant’s chemistry as the angel Aziraphale and demon Crowley. Ever since the first season ended, fans have been wondering if they’re going to get more, as a big hurdle to overcome is that the first run adapted the entirety of Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett’s novel.
As Pratchett is now sadly deceased, some concluded that that as enjoyable as Good Omens was, we’d better get used to it being a single season. But now, there’s light at the end of the tunnel.
Gaiman was recently interviewed by Digital Spy and sounded positively upbeat about continuing the story of Aziraphale and Crowley. When asked about it, he said:
“I think the probability [of making more Good Omens] is pretty good. It’s not like anybody doesn’t want to make more Good Omens.

Screen adaptations of Neil Gaiman’s celebrated graphic novels have been teased since the 90s, with various talent attached but none as yet managing to materialize in physical form. While a TV series for Netflix is in pre-production with Wonder Woman writer Allan Heinberg showrunning and David Goyer and Gaiman exec producing, an audio book has arrived from Audible boasting super-high production values and a starry cast. More like a radio play than a straight up reading of the text, this adaptation works surprisingly well and stays very faithful to the books, adding in physical descriptions of characters where necessary.

‘The truth is it never goes away’ says David Tennant. ‘It’s 15 years since I did it and I’m here today!’ He’s talking, of course, about Doctor Who. To mark the show’s arrival in the Us on streaming service HBO Max, Tennant united for an online panel with fellow Doctors Matt Smith and Jodie Whittaker to reminisce about their respective tenures in the Tardis.
Speaking from their UK homes to IGN’s Terri Schwarz, Tennant and Smith spoke about their experiences handing over the role, while Whittaker gave her advice to whoever would take up the mantle next. She told the eventual next-in-line (whoever they may be) that the pressure of the show’s history needs to be forgotten and the newcomer isn’t expected to repeat what’s been done before, only to continue to make it different and new.

Although we still have quite a long wait for new episodes of the main Doctor Who series, there’s been plenty of new content to enjoy during the lockdown, including an ambitious multi-platform event. The Big Finish audio line is now set to achieve a landmark though by casting its first openly transgender companion for the Doctor, to be played by Rebecca Root as part of an adventure involving Paul McGann’s Eighth Doctor.

Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill made a surprise return as Amy Pond and Rory Williams in a new Doctor Who scene today and fans are having a difficult time handling their emotions.
Amid the Covid-19 pandemic, Doctor Who alumni have tried their best to entertain us and help us go through this difficult period of self-isolation. After Steven Moffat and Matt Smith joined folks on Twitter to rewatch the 50th-anniversary episode, “The Day of the Doctor,” Neil Gaiman decided to participate in a similar event today by revisiting his season 6 episode, “The Doctor’s Wife.” And joining him were McU star Karen Gillan and The CW’s Rip Hunter, Arthur Darvill.
Of course, Whovians know the two as entirely different characters. The Ponds served as the main companions to Matt Smith’s Eleventh Doctor, but since their tragic departure from the show in 2013 in “The Angels Take Manhattan,” we haven...

Or as Peter Capaldi’s Twelfth Doctor once said, “where there are tears, there’s hope.” And the importance of the Doctor’s message is now more relevant than ever.
With the novel coronavirus pandemic winding through different states around the globe and claiming victims by the minute, this show is a powerful reminder that we should all try to be the Doctors of these trying times, for as Steven Moffat taught us in his tenure as showrunner, the name of the Doctor is a promise, and that promise is to never be cruel,...

At this stage, this news is unconfirmed, but The Mirror previously shared some reports about season 12 last year that turned out to be pretty spot-on – talking of the return of...
