I feel like the horror genre has had a recent surge in movies that seem to centre on a certain theme or story, say a couples struggling relationship and then almost adding on anything horror-related after, or at least that’s how it seems. This is not necessarily a new or a bad thing but in the movies I have watched recently it does seem to be happening more than before.
Shot in the Dark focuses on a guy, William (Kristoffer McMillan), who is still struggling with something that happened in his life two years previous. Now suicidal, his career is failing and he has moved to his home town in the hope that old friends and familiar surroundings...

"Do you feel like someone has been in the house?" ShineHouse has released an official trailer for an indie horror thriller titled Shot in the Dark, from director / actor Keene McRae making his feature directorial debut. This first premiered at a festival in the UK last year, and it played at the Boston Sci-Fi Film Festival earlier this year. Lawton, Nevada’s once successful writer—now small town pariah—William Langston, fights for his life as the final victim of a serial killer. Over the course of one day, William is captured and tortured. The pain launches him into the past where he is forced to confront his unresolved trauma of 'love lost' and the actions that led him into this trap. The film stars Kristoffer McMillan, Christine Donlon, Kelley Mack, Keene McRae, Jacqueline Toboni, Austin Hébert, and Brandon Sklenar. Yeah it looks very creepy with a more distinct style than most serial killer horrors,...

Expanded from the 2016 short of the same name, Broadcast Signal Intrusion stars Harry Shum Jr. as James, a bereaved video archivist who, while logging tapes of old TV broadcasts, comes across a surreal and disturbing clip of a masked entity. He believes it’s the product of broadcast signal hacking, but his discovery takes a sinister turn when he tracks down similar broadcast intrusions that turn his mission even more rabbit-hole obsessive.
Ok, let’s get the elephant in the room out of the way first. Yes, Broadcast Signal Intrusion is Remarkably similar to Brian De Palma’s Blow Out, and to a lesser extent the 2021 horror Sinister. This just-inside-realism drama about hackers interrupting terrestrial television broadcasts teases with the possibility of a plausible explanation, but finally loses its way
At one point in this unsettling paranoia thriller, a character warns protagonist James (Harry Shum Jr) that he’s at risk of going down “a rabbit hole”. Just in case you didn’t catch that Lewis Carroll reference, another character who helps James out on his quest is a young woman with long flowing hair named Alice (Kelley Mack). There’s a bad guy who wears a hat later on too, but that might be an exegesis too far.
Nevertheless, director Jacob Gentry’s horror-tinged drama, its script by Phil Drinkwater and Tim Woodall, ventures into the oneiric underground world of conspiracy theories and creepy online culture in 1999, when the latter at any rate was only just getting started. Like the recent British horror feature Censor or 2012’s Berberian Sound Studio,...

Chicago – In 1987, one of the oddest incidents in broadcast history took place in Chicago, when a local news sports segment and an episode of “Dr. Who” on PBS was interrupted by a bizarre video sequence featuring a man in a Max Headroom mask. This infamous event was the inspiration for the new film “Broadcast Signal Intrusion” – directed by Jacob Gentry – which was release to theaters and through Video-On-Demand on October 22nd, 2021, after playing at the 57th Chicago International Film Festival.

Hellboy: The Bones Of Giants: "Timed to the twentieth anniversary of the publication of Hellboy: The Bones of Giants, legendary Hellboy creator Mike Mignola and bestselling novelist Christopher Golden are adapting their classic prose novel into an all-new four-issue comic book series, drawn by Barbarian Lord creator Matt Smith and featuring colors by Chris O’Halloran (Ice Cream Man) and lettering by Clem Robins. The debut issue of Hellboy: The Bones of Giants comes to comic shops this November.
“Matt Smith’s Barbarian Lord is one of my favorite contemporary comics,” said Mignola. “It’s awfully hard to imagine an artist who is a better fit than Matt to draw Hellboy: The Bones of Giants, with its mix of Norse mythology and action-packed drama.”

"Only the creepiest unsolved mystery hack of all-time." Dark Sky Films has unveiled an official trailer for the mysterious lo-fi tech thriller Broadcast Signal Intrusion, which first premiered at the 2021 SXSW Film Festival earlier this year. In the late 90s, a video archivist unearths a series of sinister pirate broadcasts and becomes obsessed with uncovering the dark conspiracy behind them. This isn't actually a "sci-fi" film, because it's set in the 90s and all the technology in it is real, and some of the pirate broadcasts referenced actually happened (you can read about them for real). The only fiction in this is the noir mystery that James tries to solve by attempting to figure out what these broadcasts mean and if they have any connection to the disappearance of his wife. Harry Shum Jr. stars as James, with a cast including Chris Sullivan, Kelley Mack, Steve Pringle, and Justin Welborn.

As someone who grew up in the Chicagoland area, I have vague memories of there being a discussion of what would become known as the “Max Headroom Incident,” but never actually saw either of the videos in question until a few years ago. But this real-life occurrence that involved both WGN and Wttw getting their feeds hijacked with a Headroom impersonator has continued to be a mystery after all these years (the hackers were never caught), as well as a bit of technological folklore for anyone growing up in Illinois during that time. It also serves as the inspiration behind the latest feature film from Jacob Gentry, Broadcast Signal Intrusion, which is loosely based on those incidents, but utilizes far more horrific imagery as the means of crafting a tension-fueled tech thriller that managed to creep me out in ways I wasn’t expecting.

It’s tricky to pull off the kind of cryptic mystery labyrinth that “Broadcast Signal Intrusion” attempts, and Jacob Gentry’s film only works to a point — whatever point at which the viewer decides this thriller’s elusive menace is just too vague to generate sufficient urgency or suspense. As long as the promise outweighs the frustrating lack of payoff, however, it’s an intriguing and atmospheric puzzle, with “Glee” star Harry Shum Jr. chasing down a possible link between the titular phenomenon and his wife’s disappearance. The SXSW-premiering feature will be a viable item for home format sales; theatrical prospects are slimmer.

“Happy Anniversary” says new Hilltop member Hilde to her husband Miles. The penultimate episode of “The Walking Dead” Season 9 leads viewers to believe that this happy couple will become series mainstays. But as we chart their relationship through years of anniversaries, their stay on the show is cut short. On the way to the fair, their cart winds up overturned, Hilde’s cache of cute Hilltop pendants strewn across the forest floor. The couple is dead, murdered by Alpha (Samantha Morton). This brutal episode expands upon this opening montage, as joyous characters are destroyed by the end credits. These are the five most shocking moments from “The Calm Before.”
The Charter
Everyone unites at the fair. Ezekiel (Khary Payton) gives a rousing speech about joining to celebrate their accomplishments and friendships. Not everyone is in a celebratory mood however, particularly Tara (Alanna Masterson). She’s angry Lydia (Cassady McClincy) was granted asylum by Alexandria.

Sasie Sealy's short The Elephant Garden won a Student Visionary Award at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2008. In fact, it was Sealy's second win of a Student Visionary Award, one she also took in 2005 with her short Dance Mania Fantastic (about an out-of-work guy who spends his days playing Dance Dance Revolution; it looks wonderful). The Elephant Garden is gorgeously shot (Sealy's biography mentions work with photographer Gregory Crewdson; you can see that influence here) in a color-soaked North Carolina, and it follows an eleven-year-old girl, Chloe (Kelley Mack), whose world of childhood slowly fractures as her beloved older sister Elisabeth (Elise Couture) gets a boyfriend (the spooky-eyed Billy Magnussen) and shuts her out of their universe. Sealy captures the hazy feel of childhood, and how it conflicts with the burgeoning mysteries of the world; you feel, greatly, for Chloe's newfound loneliness, and you get in her head. Sealy's...
