Fox’s newest drama, Gang Related, made its intentions loud and clear last night with a solid debut. The premise may sound familiar, and it is, but besides how rushed the pilot feels, the characters and storyline stray far enough from the formula to make you want to know what’s coming next. If you’re looking for something to compare it to, essentially, it’s a grittier version of USA’s hit Graceland.
The network put together a serious cast for this one, which gives this show some added credibility going into things. So many of the series that are coming out lately seem to feature fresh faces in key roles. That’s not necessarily a negative, but it also doesn’t give you much of a built in fanbase, either.

If you’ve seen Martin Scorsese’s The Departed, then the plot for Gang Related may sound a little familiar. Ryan Lopez is a detective for L.A.’s elite Gang Task Force leading a double life as an actual member of the Los Angelicos, a powerful Latino gang. It all makes a little more sense, though, when you hear about Ryan’s backstory and how gang leader Javier Acosta took him under his wing when he was younger, only now to mastermind Ryan’s entry into the force to protect la familia. A predictable moral dilemma arises for Ryan...

The relevant recommendation for Fox‘s new series, Gang Related, may begin and end with the knowledge that it is created/written by Chris Morgan. If the writing abilities that brought you the last five Fast & Furious films, Wanted, and 47 Ronin has left you impressed, you’re all set. Lock in to your new favorite show now.
If that fact alone doesn’t mean much to you, the show obligingly lays all its cards on the table in the first fifteen minutes of the pilot. You only have to invest that amount of time to know exactly what’s coming your way, I imagine for the entirety of the show’s run, but at least for the first few episodes. The show, and you have to give it some credit really, puts it out there and says, “Look, you’re in, or you’re out.”

I didn't have time to write a review, but if you've watched this week's Firewall & Iceberg video show, you know I like Fox's "Gang Related." "Gang Related" comes on strong with a confidence that you don't expect to see from a show premiering a week after the network upfront season. The pilot, written by Chris Morgan and directed by Allen Hughes, is brash, explosive and features a strong cast ably chewing scenery. It is, in short, like a summer movie only on TV. As often happens with the transition from pilots to series, subsequent episodes maybe don't have quite the same scale, but they still offer tight pacing, terrific use of La locations and an interestingly twisty narrative focusing on Ryan Lopez (Ramon Rodriguez), a cop torn between his gang task force and the gang family (fronted by Cliff Curtis' Javier Acosta) that raised him. With most of Morgan's...

The Fall TV Season presentations for all the new network shows take place this week with the second announced yesterday. Here's a full breakdown of which concepts have made the final list over on Fox.
While "The Following" proved a breakout winner, Fox had few success stories last season. So, it is going a bit more ambitious this year with numerous dramas, comedies and one-off "event series".
Several pilots didn't make the final cut and won't be seen including the family of government-sanctioned assassins drama "Boomerang," the adaptation of Lauren Oliver's book trilogy "Delirium" about a world where love is illegal, the legal interns workplace comedy "To My Assistant," the U.S.S. Lexington-set "The Wild Blue," and "The List" about the hunt for a thief who stole a file containing the secret identities of people in the Witness Security Program,

Fox has one of its better slates coming your way with the new season, especially if you take the midseason shows into account. Some of these shows may not jump out at you now as must-see, but some of them are going to take over, if I’m any judge anyway.
Clear showcase offerings Dads, Almost Human, and Us & Them are guaranteed to take off early. Almost Human has J.J. Abrams recognition to pull people in, though it looks to be a show that could flounder after a few episodes, even if I hope it doesn’t. The other two are going to become hits. Unfortunately, we have to wait until mid-season for the Gavin & Stacey remake.
Rake also looks like a winner, as long as the translation can be made to work as an Americanized product, and the show actually delivers what made the Australian original so brilliant.

My favorite time of year is upon us, when the networks announce the new additions to their fall lineups. It’s exciting to see, out of all the pilots that have been developed over the last few months, which are getting the order to series and will be given the chance to capture the attention of audiences across the country. But for every pilot that gets picked up, even more are left behind and completely forgotten. Fox has come out as the first network to give out its fall drama pickups. One or two are surprising, but otherwise it looks like a good bunch of shows.

Fox has picked up four dramas, including Greg Kinnear's "Rake," for the 2013-2014 season, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
"Rake" is Kinnear's broadcast TV debut, with Miranda Otto and John Ortiz co-starring. According to Deadline, "Rake" is being considered for a midseason launch in the vein of "The Following," one of the few hits of last season. Kinnear will play a "House"-esque criminal defense lawyer named Keegan Deane, described as "brilliant and frustratingly charming ... whose chaotic and self-destructive personal life often gets in the way of his professional one. He takes on the cases that nobody else will touch, ruled by a resolute optimism, belief in justice and dogged determination to defend those who seem beyond redemption -- much like himself." Sam Raimi directed the pilot, and the show was created by Peter Duncan, who came up with the original Australian version.

Terry O'Quinn may have had a rough year, but "Lost" fans know you can't keep Locke down for long.
Deadline reports that the actor has replaced Emmy winner Tom Berenger in the Fox pilot "Gang Related."
The pilot centers on gang member Ryan Lopez (Ramon Rodriguez), who is sent to infiltrate the San Francisco Police Department. O'Quinn will play Sam Chapel, "a tough, dynamic police chief who oversees the Gang Task Force," according to Deadline.
In the 2012-2013 TV season, O'Quinn starred opposite Vanessa Williams in ABC's now-canceled "666 Park Ave."
Before the show premiered, Vulture asked the actor why he joined the series. "I like working in television, a lot. I really enjoyed my time on 'Lost,'" O'Quinn explained. But he knows the show, on which he played the mysterious John Locke, set a difficult precedent for his work to come. "I don't think anything's going to be 'Lost.

Exclusive: Tom Berenger has departed Fox’s drama pilot Gang Related. The move comes after the project’s table read last night. Gang Related, from 20th TV and Imagine TV, centers on Ryan Lopez (Ramon Rodriguez), a gang member sent in to infiltrate the San Francisco Police Department. Berenger was to play Sam Chapel, a tough, dynamic police chief who oversees the Gang Task Force. I hear Berenger, who has done mostly features and mini-series/limited series in his career, did not quite mesh with the rest of the cast and his vision of the character was different from that of the show’s producers. Berenger is coming off winning an Emmy for his most recent TV effort, blockbuster History miniseries Hatfields & McCoys.
