The Mountain Goats have shared “Fresh Tattoo,” the latest single from Jenny from Thebes, their sequel album to 2002’s All Hail West Texas. Plus, they’ve announced new stretch of US tour dates for Winter 2023 (get tickets here).
“Fresh Tattoo” assembles an impressive group of collaborators including Bully’s Alicia Bognanno, horn players Matt Douglas and Evan Ringel, and singer-songwriter Matt Nathanson, whom frontman John Darnielle credited in a statement with helping the band get their start after hosting an open mic night in the ’90s.
“Listening to Matt put down the harmonies on [“Fresh Tattoo”] in Tulsa earlier this year was one of the best moments I’ve ever had in my musical life,” he shared. “It meant so much to make something new with him, I wouldn’t even be here without him. I’m very happy to share it with the world today.”

The Mountain Goats have announced their new album, Jenny from Thebes. Billed as the sequel to 2002’s All Hail West Texas, it’s out on October 27th via Merge Records and includes the lead single, “Clean Slate.” Stream the track below.
According to a press release, Jenny from Thebes is “a story about the individual and society, about safety and shelter and those who choose to provide care when nobody else will.” Of course, that individual is Jenny, who longtime Mountain Goats fans will recognize from the All Hail West Texas cut bearing her name as well as “Straight Six” from Jam Eater Blues and “Night Light,” a track that appears on side two of Transcendental Youth.
Produced by Grammy-winner Trina Shoemaker, the 12-track project features contributions from Bully’s Alicia Bognanno (guitar) and Matt Douglas (horn and string arrangements). Kathy Valentine of The Go-Go’s and Matt Nathanson also provide backing vocals.

Matchbox Twenty are back with the grunge-pop single “Don’t Get Me Wrong,” the second single from their fifth studio album Where the Light Goes.
The track kicks off with a crunchy guitar riff before singer Rob Thomas kicks into the catchy, soulfully delivered tune.
In a statement, Thomas explained the meaning behind the song, “A lot of times, when people have been together for years, you can have arguments that get really heated and keep you on edge. It’s only natural for someone to sometimes think it may be the end.

Matchbox Twenty are back with “Don’t Get Me Wrong,” another song from their upcoming album, Where the Light Goes. Check it out below.
“Don’t Get Me Wrong” begins with a quietly strummed guitar before exploding into a genial chorus — a staple for the pop rock veterans. Matchbox Twenty leader Rob Thomas explained the origins of the song in a statement, referencing the ups and downs of being in a band for several years.
“A lot of times, when people have been together for years, you can have arguments that get really heated and keep you on edge,” he said. “It’s only natural for someone to sometimes think it may be the end. This song was just someone saying, ‘I know I get mad sometimes, but I’m not going anywhere.’”
The single is the second look at Where the Light Goes, due out May 26th via Atlantic Records.

I know several people with hearing loss, so any time I see a link for a video of a person hearing for the first time, I watch. It is amazing and inspiring to witness someone’s joy when experiencing something that I take for granted. Around the world, hearing loss is a sentence to silence; in the developing world, something as simple as a trip to an audiologist is an unaffordable expense. Singer Matt Nathanson traveled with the Starkey Hearing Foundation to give the gift of hearing to impoverished people in Lima, Peru. There’s a saying that you’re only as sick as your secrets. If that’s the case, then Mary Lambert is very, very healthy. On her new single, “Secrets,” the singer best know for her feature on Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’ “Same Love,” proudly declares all her secrets: she’s bi polar, her family is dysfunctional, sometimes she cries all day, and some less secret ones— she’s overweight and gay. All these confessions are sung over an impossibly jaunty tune as she refreshingly reveals all in the lyric video. “‘Secrets’ might be the first fun song I’ve ever written,” says Lambert. And, indeed, the bouncy track has an irrepressible Katy Perry, “Roar” vibe. She co-wrote the track with Eric Rosse, Benny Cassette and MoZella. Rosee and Cassette are also executive producers on her new album, “Heart On My Sleeve,” out Oct. 14 on Capitol Records. The song is about accepting yourself,...

Despite oft-overlapping acts, massive music festivals have a tendency to always reflect their surroundings. No matter if Coachella is being headlined by a holographic Tupac or a bill brimming with early-90s Britpop nostalgia, the festival is always going to to feel like an outgrowth of Los Angeles--and be very different from Chicago's Lollapalooza.

Taylor Swift accused of stealing song lyrics for her new 'Red' album. According to a new report from Hollywood Life, Country Music sensation Taylor Swift is now being accused of stealing music lyrics of all things! What the hell? She's known for writing her own unique lyrics, but that's not the case, here. Some guy named Matt Nathanson recently threw up a tweet about Taylor the other day, which said, "she’s definitely a fan… and now she’s a thief." Apparently, he's claiming she ripped off lyrics from one of his 2003 songs called "I Saw," and used it in her song titled, "All Too Well," which is a track on her new "Red" album. They say, he later went on and deleted the tweet on October 24th. Then on November 2nd, Matt hopped back on Twitter to write, "so far, my favorite thing about today is the wave of...

Taylor Swift is still riding high from the gangbusters sales of her new "Red" album, but has the "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" singer been caught stealing a lyric red-handed?
As pointed out by the Oh No They Didn't blog, a line from Swift's "All Too Well" sounds a lot like one from singer Matt Nathanson's 2003 song "I Saw."
Here's Swift's lyric: "And I forget about you long enough to forget why I needed to."
And Nathanson's: "And I'll forget about you long enough to forget why I need to."
But is it thievery or just homage -- as Swift is a fan of Nathanson, even writing some of his lyrics on her arm before shows (as kids these days are wont to do ...).
Nathanson certainly seemed to take notice, tweeting on Oct. 24, "she's definitely a fan... and now she's a thief."

Taylor Swift, 22, is known for her amazing song lyrics, but now, singer Matt Nathanson, 39, is accusing Taylor of stealing a line he wrote back in 2003 in his song called "I Saw." He tweeted, and later deleted, on Oct. 24, "she's definitely a fan... and now she's a thief." The blog Oh No They Didn't! pointed out the similar lyrics on Oct. 31, adding, "I wouldn't think much about it normally except for the fact that she is a fan of his...she has written His lyrics on her arm at her concerts before [during her Speak Now tour]." Matt went back to his Twitter on Nov. 2, saying, "so far, my favorite thing about today is the...

Taylor Swift is hailed for writing her own music, often because they're usually about her exes. But it seems she may have sampled from another artist without permission.
In her new track All Too Well off her chart-topping Red album, Swift, 22, sings around the 2:13 minute mark: "and i forget about you long enough to forget why i needed to."
Video - Taylor's Tremendous Cma Performance
This lyric may sound familiar if you're a fan of Matt Nathanson's music. In his song I Saw, which was released in 2003, he too sings around the 1:44 minute mark: "and i'll forget about you long enough to forget why i need to."
While imitation is said to be the highest form of flattery, Nathanson doesn't see it that way. The singer, 39, tweeted about the lyric similarities: "She's definitely a fan ... and now she's a thief."
What do you think? Did Swift steal this lyric?...

NBC has picked up a new Michael J. Fox sitcom for 22 episodes for fall of next year. The show will be about Fox as a dad, battling the day to day, and also Parkinson's disease, which Fox has been living with for some time. Not only am I thrilled because I've had a crush on Alex P. Keaton since I was a teen, but I think it's a bold move to write his disease into the show.

We were excited when Matt Nathanson and Sugarland’s Jennifer Nettles released their ’Run’ video last month, but it was even more exciting when Matt decided to stop by and pay Fox All Access a little visit.
Matt has admitted in the past that he’s a huge nerd when it comes to music. When he was a young boy, he was influenced by bands like Kiss and when the ’80s rolled around he was gravitating towards the female songwriters like Tracy Chapman and the Indigo Girls. Nowadays, Matt is inspired by his own music. He feels like this album, “Modern Love,” is taking on a life of its own.
He appreciates how it touches and affects his fans, even some of his fellow musician friends. He was surprised to hear Taylor Swift had written lyrics from his song, “Queen Of (K)nots,” on her arm. Those type of expressions...

It's never easy to see a "Dancing With the Stars" hopeful get the boot in the very first elimination round of the season, but the mood for Tuesday's episode was brightened a bit by an appearance from Matt Nathanson, who performed his new single "Run" with Jennifer Nettles. Tristan and Peta did a contemporary routine choreographed to the uber-sexy power ballad.
And then came the tough part. The bottom three came down to Martina Navratilova and Tony Dovolani, Gavin DeGraw and Karina Smirnoff, or Roshon Fegan and Chelsie Hightower. After a few harrowing moments, it was revealed that Roshon and Chelsie were safe.
Ultimately, Martina and Tony got the boot -- so Gavin and Karina (who won last season!) have some time to improve and hopefully stick around past next week.
Do you think the fans voted correctly? Sound off in the comments section below!

We've been obsessed with Matt Nathanson since his song "Laid" was on the "American Wedding" soundtrack back in 2003, and now he's bigger than ever, with songs from his album "Modern Love" appearing everywhere.
On Tuesday night, he kicks off the "Dancing With the Stars" elimination shows by performing "Run," featuring Jennifer Nettles of Sugarland, on the first elimination episode of the season. Hopefully the song is so awesome that it takes some of the sting off being the first celebrity to get the boot.
In the meantime, you can check out the newly released "Run" video here. We love the sexy vibe of the new clip -- plus, you know, having the words projected all over everyone's bodies really helps with the sing-along factor.

Dancing with the Stars Week 2: A Night of Chaos
Dancing with the Stars Season 14 returned for Week 2 and yes, showed us that last week was nothing but a dream. What was bestowed on us tonight was nothing short of a nightmare. There were mishaps, the judges were all over the place, Len Goodman was insane, some song choices were horrible and the show even aired the wrong voting numbers for one couple! Dancing with the Stars could have changed its name to Dancing with the Chaos.
All started well when Roshon Fegan gave another stellar performance, this time mastering a quickstep which earned him two 9s. This boy has some serious skills. We may be looking at a finalist here. Len was happy and commended Roshon appropriately.
Then the trouble started. Sherri Shepherd gave what should have been a brilliant jive but she “missed a pass.” It was very apparent on camera,...

As Kelly Clarkson kicks off 2012 with her highly anticipated Stronger tour, MTV News caught up with her opening act, singer/songwriter Matt Nathanson.
Clarkson fans may recognize Nathanson from his single "Come On Get Higher," which received heavy radio play in 2008 and then again with 2011's "Faster." For someone who hasn't heard his music yet, it can best be described as acoustic rock with a squeeze of country and a pop garnish. He cited a wide range of musical influences including U2, Poison, White Snake, Def Leppard, Bon Jovi and Van Halen.
Nathanson will also be playing several headlining shows while he tours with Clarkson. He opened up about different being an opening act is compared to having your own show.

In the real world, there are plenty of things a woman can say to signal she’s on the worst first date of her life: “I’d rather do anything else.” “I feel like I want to die.” “Holy Hell, what am I doing here?”
But on The Bachelor — where producers have carefully cataloged (and willingly exploit) every fear, phobia, and life trauma experienced by its participants — the overwhelming urge to evacuate one’s bowels in a state of pure, unadulterated terror is simply Step No. 1 on the path to”love feelings.” And that’s how Ph.D. student Emily,...

The Bachelor visited Ben's hometown of San Francisco this week (at least I think it was his hometown, did that ever come up?), as the shaggy-haired star went to the top of a bridge and the top of a snow-covered street with his suitors.
He also stopped briefly in Dumpsville with Lindzi, later sending Shawntel Newton there in what may have been the most contrived ABC set-up in show history.
But we're getting ahead of ourselves. Let's go over the highlights from the episode before we tackle the lowlight of what, for once, might truly have been the most emotional Rose Ceremony ever...

Note: The following contains spoilers if you have not seen Season 16, Episode 3 of ABC's "The Bachelor."
I began rolling my eyes roughly three minutes into last night's episode of "The Bachelor," fearful that the show was losing steam early into the season. It's week three and Ben already has Emily, who is studying to secure her PhD in germaphobia, scaling the steep incline of the Golden Gate Bridge. Not a single viewer watching was surprised to learn that Emily had a fear of heights and the process of overcoming this fear with Ben is a direct metaphor for their nonexistent relationship. Both blabbed on about "getting through this" and "overcoming challenges together will make us a stronger unit" and Emily even went above and beyond this tired scenario by saying that "bridges bring two things together."
I took a sip of my beverage of choice and wondered if the producers...

I gave you fair warning that this week’s episode was a wild one. We started by making the short trip over from Sonoma to Ben’s hometown of San Francisco. I love this seemingly simple change in the show of going to locations that mean so much to our bachelor. Obviously we always travel to the contestants’ hometowns towards the end of the season, but this is completely different. It’s great for these women to see Ben in his hometown and get a real glimpse of what life will be like with him… minus Matt Nathanson, climbing the Bay Bridge,...

The latest "Bachelor" episode sees the girls heading for San Francisco, which is where Ben lives when he's not filming romance shows for ABC. His sister Julia lives there too, so he gets to see and talk to her about the experience.
The girls who get mentions to Julia are Lindzi, Kacie, Courtney, Emily and Jennifer. He hilariously thinks his sister would hit it off with Courtney. Mmm hmm. We've barely seen his sister, but she seems cool and I think she would see through Courtney in about four seconds.
Emily's Date
Her date card clue is "love lifts us up" - I mentally add "where we belong! Where the eagles fly! On the mountain high!," so my theory is that they are heading to boot camp or perhaps a factory. "I got nowhere else to go!" Heh.
But it turns out they are climbing the San Francisco Bay Bridge.

Music and Muppets go hand in hand and if one song from Kermit can reduce grown men to tears then as the new Muppet movie nears our cinemas it’s time for some of the popular tracks from the Muppets’ previous movies and episodes to get the cover treatment with The Green Album.
There are some old favourites among the new tracks with Ok Go’s rendition of the Muppet Theme getting the whole shebang off to an unconventional start, proving a divisive version of the classic tune. Alkaline Trio’s Movin’ Right Along is a jaunty punk cover of the Fozzie/Kermit duet from The Muppet Movie and it demands a replay or two and will end up in your head but leave it to The Fray to cover the infamous Mahna-Mahna which is likely clamped to your subconscious already. You have to hand it to the team behind this first teaser for "American Reunion," the latest sequel to 1999's "American Pie," it's perfect. In a so-simple-it's-genius concept, it evokes nostalgia for the original film, as well as the original films era, and piques the interest for the next movie. It's a series of photo-booth style pictures of the original gang including Jason Biggs, Alyson Hannigan, Sean William Scott, and even Dad Eugene Levy, accompanied by Matt Nathanson's soulful cover of the song "Laid," originally performed by the band James (making it even more nostalgic for those who know the original...

[1] Tough as it is to believe, it's been over a decade since we first met the American Pie cast in 1999. If that made you pause and think "Wow, that makes me feel old," you're just where Universal Pictures wants you to be. The marketing team behind American Reunion has been pushing the nostalgia angle (not surprisingly), and I, for one, have found it totally effective. Their latest effort is a montage of the core cast goofing off inside a photobooth -- a simple idea that might nevertheless have you going "awww" as each familiar face flashes by. Hit the jump to see the slideshow, plus a promo image of the Class of 1999. And here's a small still of the old gang: [2] [via Vulture [3]] Seeing everyone together again, it's striking how some of the actors look exactly the same while others have changed considerably. Kind of like at a real high school reunion,...

After growing up with the American Pie series as a staple for raunchy sex comedy, the series deteriorated with its many spin-offs, but now it is officially back. Harold and Kumar creators Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg have helmed American Reunion. It sees the return of the original cast including Jason Biggs, Seann William Scott, Eddie Kaye Thomas, Thomas Ian Nicholas, Chris Klein, Alyson Hannigan, Mena Suvari, Shannon Elizabeth, Tara Reid, Jennifer Coolidge, Natasha Lyonne and Eugene Levy.

We know, we know. A fourth 'American Pie' movie, who asked for that?
For a franchise that's better known for its high school nostalgia factor and an endless string direct-to-dvd spin-offs, it's been a long time since we've really cared about 'American Pie.' But now that the first teaser trailer is here to bring back the old crew for the first time in ten years, we're getting a bit sentimental over here. Who are we kidding, that song by Matt Nathanson gets us every time.
Still no details on the story and still have a while to go until its April 6, 2012 release date, but click through and take a trip down memory lane with the first teaser for 'American Reunion.'
