Paradise Square makes quite the reach. A musical about the build-up to New York’s horrific Draft Riots of 1863 reaches to the past to tell us about the present. It reaches across cultures to tell us about assimilation and appropriation. It reaches across styles of music and dance to celebrate diversity and commonality. It reaches to contain both epic realism and mythical nostalgia. And somewhere along the line it reaches a point of no return, when all that reaching just wears itself out.
The musical, opening tonight at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre, is big in a way that calls back to the Cameron Mackintosh productions of the 1980s and their ’90s Broadway offspring like Ragtime and Kiss of the Spider Woman – those latter two courtesy of Garth Drabinsky, the producer attempting a comeback with Paradise Square after some financial flim-flam landed him in a Canadian prison; he was paroled in 2013 after serving 17 months.

Covid has caused a lot of uncertainty around Broadway. Several shows have had to suspend performances, go on hiatus, or close permanently. And the American Theatre Wing hasn’t announced key dates for this year’s Tony Awards yet. Though with that being said, we are now about halfway through the Broadway season, and there are six productions of musicals set to open this spring. Could we see any of them contend at the next Tonys? Below is a look at the plot of each musical as well as the awards history of their authors, casts, and directors, plus the opening and (where applicable) closing dates.

A ships-passing-in-the-night weepie aimed as much at sensitive men as the women with a soft spot for them, Steven Alexander's A Night Without Armor is a two-hander whose attempts to transcend staginess generally fall flat. Some who happen across it will respond to its talky earnestness about love and idealism, but Before Sunrise it ain't, and commercial prospects are very slim.

While the Sundance Film Festival is the better known film festival located in Utah that runs in January, it is not the only one, as the Slamdance Film Festival has been running in the same place during the same month for over 20 years. The unique aspect of the Slamdance Film Festival, however, is its Narrative Features and Documentary Features program, which restricts its selection to films that are directorial debuts, made for under $1 million, and don’t have Us distribution. The 2015 incarnation of the festival is set to run from January 23rd to the 29th, and ahead of the festival’s premiere next month, organisers have unveiled the lineup for the aforementioned categories. The lineup is as follows.
Narrative Features Program:
Across The Sea (Turkey/USA), making its North American Premiere
Written and Directed by Nisan Dağ and Esra Saydam
Starring Damla Sönmez, Jacob Fishel, Ahmet Rıfat Şungar, Hakan Karsak,...

“It’s very exciting to bring this dynamic lineup to audiences in Park City,” said festival director Anna Germanidi. “We are proud to help launch these filmmakers’ careers and celebrate the success we all believe these films deserve.”
“Our success in showcasing emerging artists is most obviously linked with American talent, but increasingly at Slamdance, we want to also support new international talent,” said co-founder and president Peter Baxter.

The Sundance Film Festival dominates Park City in late January, but there is also the upstart Slamdance Film Festival. We’ve not really highlighted that fest or its program, but I always stay at Treasure Mountain Inn where Slamdance is headquartered and they’ve kind of grown on me. Last year they brought Christopher Nolan to speak (the fest had the good sense to program his first film) and Joe Mangianello came to vamp his male stripper docu. This year, there’s every chance of seeing Dennis Rodman, the flamboyant former rebounding machine and Bff of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, for the docu Dennis Rodman’s Big Bang In Pyongyang. So let’s all root for an international incident! Here are the films they’ll be playing from January 23-29:

Another Hollywood marriage bites the dust, as "True Blood" star Rutina Wesley is taking steps to end her union with actor Jacob Fishel ("Without a Trace").
TMZ reports that Wesley filed divorce papers on Tuesday (Aug. 20) to initiate the end of her 8-year marriage with Fishel, citing irreconcilable differences. With just a few credits on his resume, it's fair to say that Wesley has reached greater acting success than her husband, but she's reportedly requested that the judge reject any claim he may make for spousal support.
Wesley and Fishel met while the two were attending Julliard and made it official after they graduated in June, 2005. The two have no children together.

"True Blood" star Rutina Wesley is ending her marriage, but she's taking steps to make sure she's not sucked dry ... TMZ has learned. The actress -- who plays Tara on the show -- filed divorce docs to end her 8-year-marriage to actor Jacob Fishel ... citing the go-to reason -- irreconcilable differences. Rutina is more successful than Fishel and presumably pulls in a lot more bank, but she's asking the judge to reject any claim he might make for spousal support.

New York -- If the idea of a posthumous wedding onstage is intriguing, then John Ford's 17th century, darkly-humored drama "The Broken Heart" will have immense appeal.
The classy production presented by Theatre for a New Audience, currently performing at The Duke on 42nd Street, has an expressive, talented cast, and a rather high body count, though only one of them gets (tastefully) married as a corpse.
Before everything turns Gothically gory and "revenge proves its own executioner," there are a couple of engrossing hours of human tragedy, tinged with comic moments that are energetic and smoothly paced.
Ford, whose best-known play is "`Tis Pity She's A Whore," is considered to be the last great dramatist of the English Renaissance. The timelessness of his characters' emotions enables director Selina Cartmell, in her American debut, to make the work completely accessible to a modern audience.

How I Got Lost… Well, maybe you should start to answer that with the drunken cab ride out New York to Philadelphia. The film by Joe Leonard follows Andrew (Aaron Stanford) and Jake (Jacob Fishel) a year after the 9/11 attacks. They were two promising kids who grew up into mediocrity. Jake, an aspiring novelist who settles for sports writing, loved and lost a beautiful blond girl named Sarah (Nicole Vicius), a girl who tends to disappear a lot, and Andrew, in the midst of a drunken downward spiral, just lost his father. Andrew tricks Jake into attending the funeral, hence the “surprise” trip to Philadelphia, and then on to Ohio. On their journey, Jake meets a small town waitress, Leslie (Rosemarie Dewitt), and the flirtatious outcome that is more than predictable follows. Andrew, being the loud, obnoxious one of the duo, makes a rude, loud speech to all of the guests at the wake,...

Monday was Arbor Day for me. That is, I watched two Austin Film Festival films up at the Arbor Cinema. The best anyone can do is three features a day from this point on, but I was too busy watching a screener to make it any earlier (and more on that later).
I don't know how much of it was rainy Monday, post-conference, or just being out of downtown, but the Aff movies at the Arbor were not crowded. That's not to say it was empty -- there was a respectable sized crowd for both films I saw -- but no one was forced for sit in the front row. Keep that in mind for all venues for the next three days; unless you're late, you're likely to get into everything now. If it's at the Paramount, you'll get in.
