A poison-tipped portrait of living through his parents’ divorce, “The Squid and the Whale” has long been understood to be Noah Baumbach’s most explicitly autobiographical film. And yet, so much of his subsequent work — from the slapstick solipsism of “Mistress America” to the generational broadside of “While We’re Young” — is snagged on the perils of letting other people determine one’s self-worth. A Barnard freshman is desperate for the approval of her school’s most exclusive literary society. An esoteric director feels attacked when his new documentary about a leftist intellectual isn’t as warmly received as his doting protege’s dumb movie about some guy he knows on Facebook. Even “De Palma” hinges on an artist having the opportunity to reckon with his own reputation; it’s an extremely generous gift from one filmmaker to another.

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of film critics two questions and publishes the results on Monday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best film in theaters right now?”, can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: What fall movie are you most excited to see?
E. Oliver Whitney (@cinemabite), Screencrush.com
Is there any acceptable answer besides “The Killing of a Sacred Deer”? No, no there is not. (Unless you count December as ‘fall,’ which means the new PTA is my most anticipated.) “The Lobster” would’ve been my favorite film of last year had “Moonlight” not taken the top spot, and “Dogtooth” leaves me in a mix of amazement and horror each time I watch it. So new Yorgos Lanthimos is like a drug for me. But while I’m at it, I also can’t wait for “The Florida Project,...

Eddie Redmayne. Jared Leto. Jeffrey Tambor. John Lithgow. David Duchovny. Matt Bomer. The number of cis men who have played trans women could fill pages.

When they do it well in a critically-acclaimed project, they are praised endlessly for taking on such a “brave” role. Often, it’s a slam dunk for awards nominations and wins. Tambor has won the Emmy for outstanding lead actor two years running for playing Maura on “Transparent.” Redmayne was nominated for an Oscar for his performance in “The Danish Girl,” and Leto won for “Dallas Buyers Club.”
Those are just the recent, generally positive portrayals of trans women. Let’s not forget about “The Silence of the Lambs,” “The Crying Game,” and “Dressed to Kill.” Those are just some of the many examples trotted out by ScreenCrush senior editor E.

On the seventh episode of CBS' Survivor: Game Changers, which aired April 12, castaway Zeke Smith was outed as transgender by Jeff Varner in a desperate attempt to save himself from elimination. "There is deception here. Deceptions on levels, Jeff, that these guys don't even understand," Jeff said, looking at Zeke. "Why haven't you told anyone that you're transgender?" Ten months after the episode was filmed, Jeff told Entertainment Tonight that the moment was not planned, but the fallout was swift. Not only was Jeff immediately rebuked by fellow cast mates, who sent the three-time contestant home, but he was later fired from his real estate job as backlash grew. In the weeks since, Zeke has told Et that he was ready to embrace his former cast mate “because that's how we encourage people to change and turn adversaries into allies.” Ahead of the live finale, which will see Jeff reunited with Zeke, the former...

Remaking a beloved film isn’t always the easiest task, but what happens when the original wasn’t all that good to begin with?
The 1988 theatrical release of “Beaches” was a lachrymose lovefest that baffled the critics who found its schmaltz and manipulative melodrama far too heavy-handed for consumption. That didn’t keep filmgoers from buying tickets or wringing out their tear ducts for this earnest story of lifelong friends. No matter how hard-hearted you were, it was clear that the Garry Marshall-directed film had its charms, not the least of which was Mayim Bialik and Bette Midler as the older and younger versions of the brassy C.C. Bloom, and the latter’s ability to sell “Wind Beneath My Wings” to anyone with a Bff.

If you’re wondering where the next Damien Chazelle will come from, look no further than the 2017 Sundance Film Festival short film lineup.
Sundance has a long history of discovering the next generation of acclaimed filmmakers by first championing their short films. Chazelle made his first big splash by winning the 2013 Grand Jury Prize for “Whiplash” (the short). Last year, Jim Cummings won that prize for “Thunder Road,” and he’s back this year with a new short. Also generating a lot of pre-festival buzz is Kristen Stewart, making her writing/directing debut with the short “Come Swim.”
Before the Sundance Film Festival commences on January 19, 2017, here’s a briefing on Cummings’ “The Robbery,” Stewart’s “Come Swim” and eight other buzzworthy shorts (two of which are viewable online).

Jessica Rabbit kidnapped by Nazis. Costner rescuing Princess Diana. We look back at a few strange movie sequels that were never made…
The multi-million dollar success of any movie will inevitably leave Hollywood executives clamouring for a sequel. And while there are plenty of movies whose stories are open-ended enough to warrant a return to the creative well, there are many times when coming up with a follow-up idea requires all sorts of imaginative leaps. Just look at something like Alien: Resurrection, which had to come up an elaborate reason why Ripley had (spoiler alert) managed to survive a swan-dive into a lead foundry in Alien 3.
Which brings us to this list, which is devoted to a few of the weirder sequel ideas that never made it to the big screen. An E.T. sequel in which little Elliott gets tortured by aliens? Forrest Gump dancing with Princess Diana?...

As the music industry plans to hand out awards for the best of 2014, it’s hard not to reflect on the GRAMMYs ceremony that happened just 15 years prior. The year was 2000, but in actuality it was a reflection of 1999, when just about anything could happen. Jennifer Lopez launched her musical career, Britney Spears brought back the Catholic schoolgirl outfit, and TLC was suddenly a group again (and not just a TV channel). But the year was more than that. And the 42nd annual Grammy Awards attempted to capture that – for better or worst.

Whitney Houston fans may have to do a double-take after seeing the first image of actress Yaya DaCosta as the late singer in Lifetime's upcoming biopic.
DaCosta, who was once a finalist on "America's Next Top Model," recreated the cover of Houston's 1987 album, "Whitney," which went on to sell over 9 million copies and spawn the hit single "I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)." That modeling background came in handy, as the 31-year-old mimicked Houston's hair, smile, and body language to a T.
DaCosta told Entertainment Weekly, which premiered the image, that she "just looked at the [album] picture and did the pose!" If her portrayal of Houston throughout the entire film is this effortless, audience expectations should be high.
The biopic, tentatively titled simply "Whitney Houston," is directed by Houston's "Waiting to Exhale" co-star Angela Bassett. It's set to air sometime in early 2015.

When we look back at Em’s career, we know that he’s notable for constantly making fun of other celebs. So it’s not surprising that in his new song, ‘Evil Dead,’ he dropped a line about the Biebs.
Eminem‘s new record, MMLP2, is already a fan favorite — but is he dissing Justin Bieber on a new track? The rapper makes fun of everyone from Casey Anthony to Britney Spears in the new song, “Evil Twin” — and yes, he mentions the Believe singer.
Eminem’s ‘Evil Twin’ Disses — Did He Bash Justin Bieber?
It looks like Eminem is actually taking the high road! He explains in the new song, that he’s bummed there aren’t any boy bands to make fun of anymore (apparently he’s unaware of One Direction).
So, he straight out asks:
So who’s left? Lady Gaga? Messed with the Bieber? Nah.

Before we jump into the parent-approved Rock Power of Top 7 week, a word about the group performances that I omit in my recaps: They are just so terrible. Thank God we have a fluorescent-haired watchdog like Nicki Minaj to look Kree Harrison and Janelle Arthur in their buttermilk-sweet eyes and howl, "Cheesy, please Stop It." Ultimately, the group performances don't really factor into the home vote, so it's safer to evaluate each remaining singer based on what they achieve in solo performances. Because what they usually achieve is "being better than Lazaro," which I consider the unofficial theme every single week.
Anyway, here we go, #7-1. I give these kids credit for belting out old rock anthems, because the playlist looks like a gym teacher's iPod. Ride that power chord, little Lazaro!
7. Lazaro Arbos, "We Are the Champions"
Lazaro clearly wants my vote, because 1) he wasn't awful this week, and 2) he was sweaty.

Most people would give their right arm to snag a coveted invitation to Clive Davis' Grammy party -- but not Cissy Houston.
The mother of the late Whitney Houston, who died last year on the night of Davis' shindig, expressed offense at having been invited to the record executive's annual celebration, calling the invitation "unheard of."
"I got an invitation to the party, which is the most obscene thing," Houston, 79, told "Access Hollywood" on Thursday. "I don't know why they would want me to come to the party in which she died, you know? ... I guess maybe he just sent me a copy for remembrance sake."
But unlike their mother, Whitney's brother Gary and sister-in-law Pat will take part in Saturday's festivities. They told "Entertainment Tonight" that they will attend in support of Davis.
"[Clive] was such an important part of Whitney's life. I mean, that was her industry father,...

Strangers on a Train & Dial M For Murder I received review copies of these two Blu-rays only yesterday afternoon so I've only had a chance to remove the cellophane, but I can't wait to give both a watch and will relay the results once I do. Initially, looking at the features alone, it appears the Blu-ray copy of Strangers on a Train has all the same features as my 2-Disc DVD edition from 2004. It should be noted the "Preview Version" of the film, also known as the British release, which runs two minutes longer, is only presented in standard definition at 480i and not high definition like the final release version, which does still have the included audio commentary. The Dial M for Murder disc lacks the "3D: A Brief History" that was found on the previous DVD release while keeping the "Hitchcock and Dial M" documentary. My assumption here...
