- Coached Carson Palmer while at the University of Southern California.
- Only quarterback in NFL history to pass for 400 or more yards in a game and earn a perfect 158.3 rating.
- Part of the 1983 NFL "Quaterback Class", which saw six QBs drafted in the first round: John Elway, Todd Blackledge, Jim Kelly, Tony Eason, O'Brien (by the New York Jets out of California-Davis), and Dan Marino. Inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1997.
