Since 2007, Venice’s Queer Lion Award has reflected and elevated the best in LGBTQ cinema. Fifteen years later, founder Daniel N. Casagrande said this year’s Venice Film Festival will be “the most queer edition ever.”
Among the fest’s 30 LGBTQ-themed titles, 19 are competing for the Queer Lion, including a record six films from the main competition. The series include Detective Forst, from noted Polish writer Remigiusz Mroz, which revolves around a crime-solving journey across the Polish Tatra Mountains. Jakub Żulczyk’s novel Feedback is also being adapted for a series starring Arkadiusz Jakubik, which will be helmed by Leszek Dawid.
On the film side, Anna Szczypczyńska’s romance novel Tonight You Are Sleeping With Me will be adapted for a feature helmed by Robert Wichrowski, while the famed Polish novel Mr. Car & The Knights Templar is also getting the film treatment, with Rafał Skalski directing and Matylda damięcka, Lena Góra, and Aleksandra Domańska starring.

The Polish Filmmakers Association (Sfp) and Poland’s Camerimage festival have offered employment to refugees coming from Ukraine following the Russian invasion last Thursday.
In a letter to Ukraine’s Ambassador to Poland Andriy Deshchytsa, Sfp’s president Jacek Bromski said if some of the refugees crossing the border into Poland included representatives of the Ukrainian film industry, “we can help them find employment in the productions of the Munk Studio operating within the structures of the Polish Filmmakers Association.”

The coronavirus pandemic couldn’t have arrived at a worse time for Leszek Bodzak, the producer behind Jan Komasa’s Oscar-nominated “Corpus Christi.” With just five days to spare before principal photography was set to begin on “Leave No Traces,” the latest feature from acclaimed director Jan P. Matuszyński (“The Last Family”), Bodzak was forced to postpone the shoot.
Yet in the four months of hand-wringing before cameras finally began to roll last July, Bodzak’s French co-producer, Les Contes Modernes, was able to secure additional financing from Arte and regional French funds, giving the film’s budget a much-needed boost. “That was something unexpectedly good from the pandemic,” says Bodzak, whose Aurum Film is also prepping Komasa’s next project, “Shine of the Sun.”
That strange twist of fate is perhaps emblematic of these uncertain times for the Polish industry, in which producers determined to soldier through the pandemic...

The third film from emerging Polish talent Kuba Czekaj was shot in his homeland, in Germany and on the Baltic Sea. Kuba Czekaj is a Polish talent to look out for, his projects drawing the attention of both critics and the industry ever since he directed Don’t Be Afraid of The Dark Room, a short noir fairy tale in 2009. His feature films The Erlprince and Baby Bump screened at many international festivals, including the Berlinale and Venice. Czekaj is currently in post-production with his third film, entitled Lipstick on the Glass. “It’s a film about the need for equality, harmony between men and women, family and self-realisation, and – above all – about the freedom to be who you want to be and to choose your own sexual identity,” the director told Cineuropa. When the coronavirus pandemic arrived in Poland earlier this year, producer Jakub Razowski, of Watchout Studio (“The Coldest Game”), was already prepping a summer shoot for “Prime Time,” a thriller starring Bartosz Bielenia, fresh off his breakout role in Jan Komasa’s Oscar-nominated “Corpus Christi.”
Razowski and first-time director Jakub Piątek had cast from a deep pool of veteran stage actors, whose availability was limited to the summer months when Polish theaters traditionally go dark. If the production didn’t move forward, Razowski says, “we knew that the next possibility to book our cast would be the summer of 2021.” The cameras rolled, with cast and crew using a rigorous set of coronavirus protocols introduced by the Polish Film Institute.

Among six completed films are Andrzej Jakimowski’s Once Upon a Time in November and Maciej Sobieszczański’s The Reconciliation.
Eleven films will be presented at the pitchings event while nine films will be presented in the work-in-progress section.
Around 150 guests from Poland and abroad are expected to attend the event in Wrocław, which has been organized since 2013 in co-operation with the Polish Film Institute.
Projects presented in past years include Spoor, The Last Family, The Birds Are Singing in Kigali and All These Sleepless Nights.

The 2017 Berlin Film Festival has revealed the first raft of titles selected for its Generations sidebar, which features youth and children’s films.
Michael Winterbottom’s music documentary On The Road [pictured], which follows the band Wolf Alice on tour, will open the Generation 14plus programme this year.

Exclusive: Wroclaw moves 2017 dates to accommodate World Games; Polish festival reveals 2016 New Horizons winners.
The film festivals in Wroclaw and Locarno are set for a collision course as both festivals will be held concurrently for the first time next year.
A Locarno spokesperson confirmed to Screen that the Swiss festival’s 70th edition will be held from Wednesday 2 to Saturday 12 August, while New Horizons will kick off its 17th outing a day later, from Thursday 3 August, according to the New Horizons press department.
New Horizons’ organisers were obliged to change its dates from the traditional slot in the last two weeks in July as the Polish city will be hosting the 10th edition of sports event the World Games.
Speaking exclusively to Screen, New Horizons festival president Roman Gutek explained that the decision to move to August for 2017 had been made two years ago in order to avoid a strain on resources in the city.

Biennale College - Cinema, the Venice International Film Festival’s emerging filmmakers initiative, has selected four 2015/16 projects to move into the production phase of the programme.
The four teams will receive $160,000 (€150,000) to produce their projects, and will premiere them at the 2016 Venice International Film Festival (Aug 30 - Sept 10).
Now in it’s fourth year, the Biennale College program aims to nurture new international filmmakers by helping them to develop micro-budget films through workshops and industry mentors.
The four teams were chosen from the 12 projects that participated in the first round of workshops earlier this year.

Tom Hooper’s The Danish Girl wins Queer Lion
Veteran director Marco Bellocchio’s Blood Of My Blood (Sangue Del Mio Sangue) has won the Fipresci Award at the 72nd Venice Film Festival (Sept 2-12).
The film is a vampire-themed period drama starring Alba Rohrwacher, who won last year’s Volpi prize for best actress with her performance in Hungry Hearts, as a 17th-century noblewoman who becomes a nun and seduces a young army officer and his twin brother. The film is sold by The Match Factory.
Venice’s ‘Collateral Awards’ - prizes assigned independently by film critics and cultural associations - also saw the Queer Lion Award go to Tom Hooper’s The Danish Girl, starring Eddie Redmayne as Danish artist Lili Elbe, one of the first known recipients of sexual reassignment surgery.
The film, which receives its North American premiere at Toronto tonight (Sept 12), is a hot contender for the upcoming awards season.

Starring Kacper Olszewski and Agnieszka Podsiadlik , it charts an 11-year-old boy's relationship with his mother and his own body as things begin to shift and change. Venice Festival artistic director Alberto Barbera has hailed the success of the Festival’s groundbreaking Biennale College - Cinema programme in nurturing new work from young filmmakers around the world.
“We have gone beyond every expectation,” Barbera said of the programme. which was launched in 2012 and has now inspired similar initiatives in music and theatre in Venice.
Barbara himself has taken a intimate role in the running of the programme. The idea is to give 12 teams of emerging film directors and producers the chance to participate in high level workshops with feature film projects. Three of the projects will be commissioned and fully financed.
The 72nd Venice Film Festival (Sept 2-12) is screening all three films greenlit last year:
grotesque, surrealistic comedy Baby Bump by Kuba Czekaj;
Blanka by Japanese director Kohki Hasei (but which was shot in the Philippines) , about a young girl who survives in Manila begging and stealing from tourists; and

Smack dab in the middle of the fall film fest season, the Venice Film Festival via Sala Web screening room (September 3rd to 16th) will be serving up fifteen offerings (12 feature films in the Orizzonti Competition and 3 feature films from the Biennale College) for the streaming VOD platform set up by the Festival Scope folks. Among the titles that lovers of world cinema will have the unique opportunity to see the likes of Italian Gangsters from helmer Renato De Maria (Tiff preemed La prima linea) and Jake Mahaffy’s long-awaited sophomore film, Free in Deed (see pic above). The films will be made available for five days after the films have premiere screenings at the festival. This year’s selection of films includes 15 world premieres: 12 from the Orizzonti Competition and three features from the Biennale College, Venice’s laboratory that supports micro-budget films.
Directors having their films featured include Merzak Allouache (The Rooftops), Jake Mahaffy (Wellness) and Gabriel Mascaro (August Winds), as well as numerous first-time filmmakers.

Polish Days constitutes the most important industry event at the T-Mobile New Horizons International Film Festival. There, more than 250 movers and shakers of the Polish and international film industry, from producers and film funds to buyers and festival programmers from Berlin, Semaine de la Critique, Rotterdam, Venice, Tribeca and New Directors/New Films, met to watch the latest Polish films at closed screenings. This year, the event took place from July 29 to 31 in the city of Wrocław, Poland.
The 2015 edition focused on funding and German producers. Polish and German film producers met at a conference organized by the Polish Film Institute, the Film Commission of Poland, Mitteldeutsche Medienförderung (Mdm), Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg, German regional funds and the Cottbus Film Festival.
A total of 26 films and projects by both first-time directors and well-established filmmakers were selected for the industry event.
In fact, among the works shown in full at closed screenings were Karlovy Vary competition titles "The Red Spider" by Marcin Koszalkaand "Chemo" by Bartosz Prokopowicz as well as the debut features by Wojciech Kasperski "The High Frontier," "Berlin Diaries" by Przemysław Wojcieszek, "My Sister" by Kinga Dębska and Krzysztof Łukaszewicz’s "Karbala."
As far as the work-in-progress section is concerned, it presented 10 films. These were "Baby Bump" by Kuba Czekaj, "Journals" by Wiktoria Szymańska, "Waves" by Grzegorz Zariczny, "Into the Spirale" by Konrad Aksinowicz, "All These Sleepless Nights" by Michał Marczak and two projects pitched at the festival last year - "Wild Roses" by Anna Jadowska and "Volhynia" by Wojtek Smarzowski. Two documentaries were also presented here: "21 x New York" by Piotr Stasik and "When You Return" by Anna Zamęcka.
Pitchings presented Polish films at an earlier stage of development and production included new works by Marcin Wrona ("Lili"), Dorota Kędzierzawska ("Speedway") and Marcin Dudziak ("Presence"), as well as the following debut features: "The Last Family" by Jan P. Matuszyński, "Tower" by Jagoda Szelc, "Forest" by Joanna Zastróżna and the Cinemart project "Hurrah, we're still alive!" by Agnieszka Polska. Moreover, three projects by foreign directors but developed in Poland were also pitched: "AA" by Jack Faber, "Marie Curie" by Marie Noelle and "People I'm Not" by Francesco Rizzi. Post-production awards from Toya Studios (sound) and Chimney Poland (image) went to "People I'm Not" by Francesco Rizzi, "Tower" by Jagoda Szelc and "Speedway" by Dorota Kędzierzawska.
In the case of "The Last Family," David Ogrodnik, one of the stars of the critically acclaimed hit "Ida," has been cast in the film as Tomek, the son of Polish artist Zdzislaw Beksinski, played by Andrzej Seweryn, a veteran film and theater actor.
According to Joanna Łapińska, the head of Polish Days and the artistic director of the T-Mobile New Horizons International Film Festival, the program “contains, in equal measure, expressive, original works, along with interesting genre films, moving features, and courageous documentaries.” As far as Agnieszka Odorowicz, the general director of the Polish Film Institute, is concerned, Polish Days has become “one of the most interesting events dedicated to promoting Polish cinema and showcasing film projects in early stages of production. The importance of Polish Days for the international promotion of Polish cinema cannot be overstated. ” Łapińska was adamant on “making it clear” that “Poland is a place for interesting coproductions.”
Polish Days is co-organized with the Polish Film Institute. The event’s partners include the Film Commission of Poland, the Mazovia-Warsaw and Wrocław Film Commissions, the Adam Mickiewicz Institute, the National Audiovisual Institute and post-production studios Toya Studios and Chimney Poland.

The 40th Gdynia Film Festival (September 14-19) will feature a total of 18 titles in its main competition this year.
Jerzy Skolimowski’s Polish-Irish co-production 11 Minutes, starring Richard Dormer, Agata Buzek, Beata Tyszkiewicz and Mateusz Kościukiewicz follows the same 11 minutes in the lives of several different characters, while the action of Bajon’s Panie Dulskie is set in 1914, 1954 and the 1990s, with a cast including Krystyna Janda, Katarzyna Figura and Maja Ostaszewska.

Polish Days, the showcase of national films at the T-Mobile New Horizons International Film Festival in Wroclaw, Poland, has announced 26 titles this year.
Among six completed films are Karlovy Vary features The Red Spider and Chemo.
Ten films will be presented at the pitchings event - for projects in development and the early stages of production - while nine films will be presented in the work-in-progress strand.
This year’s Polish Days will have a focus on German producers and film funds, including a meeting of Polish and German film producers organised in co-operation with the East German film funds Mitteldeutsche Medienförderung (Mdm) and Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg, Cottbus Iff, the Polish Film Institute and Film Commission Poland.

Polish Days, the showcase of national films at the T-Mobile New Horizons International Film Festival in Wroclaw, Poland, has announced 26 titles this year.
Among six completed films are Karlovy Vary features The Red Spider and Chemo.
Ten films will be presented at the pitchings event - for projects in development and the early stages of production - while nine films will be presented in the work-in-progress strand.
This year’s Polish Days will have a focus on German producers and film funds, including a meeting of Polish and German film producers organised in co-operation with the East German film funds Mitteldeutsche Medienförderung (Mdm) and Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg, Cottbus Iff, the Polish Film Institute and Film Commission Poland.

Alexey German Jr.’s Under Electric Clouds has become the first high-profile title to fall victim to Ukraine’s new distribution ban on Russian films and TV series, which came into effect last week.
One law entitled ¨On the Protection of the Information, TV and Radio Space of Ukraine¨ forbids all audiovisual works that contain the ¨popularization, agitation for, propagation about all law enforcement agencies, the armed forces, and other armed, military or security forces of the occupier state¨ from being shown on Ukrainian territory.
In addition, a law banning the distribution and showing of films and TV series produced in Russia after January 1, 2014, came into force at the same time, according to Unian Information Agency.
The ban coincided with the film’s theatrical opening by distributor Paradis in Russian cinemas and was all the more surprising given that German’s film was made as a co-production between Russia, Ukraine and Poland between Artem Vasiliev’s Metrafilm...

Up to three low-budget features will be greenlit from the 12 selections.
La Biennale di Venezia has unveiled the 12 projects selected for the third round of the Biennale College - Cinema programme.
They attended the first workshop in Venice from Oct 4-13. Further workshops will be held in December and January, and up to three of the features will be greenlit to screen at the Venice International Film Festival in 2015.
The College has backed previous low-budget features including Memphis, Short Skin and Blood Cells.
The group of participants hail from Argentina, Brazil, Bulgaria, France,, Italy, Japan, New Zealand, Poland, Portugal, Sri Lanka, the Us and the UK.
The selections, with information provided by the Biennale, are:
Baby Bump – Kuba Czekaj (director, Poland), Madgadalena Kaminska (producer, Poland): a story centred on the fear of puberty and the sexual transformation of an eleven-year-old. As his body changes, a dark and fantastic world begins to take hold of his life...

The 17th annual Slamdance Film Festival is all set to run for eight days and nights Jan. 21-27. The festival is featuring a bold theme this year of “All Is Not Lost” where — due to the current devastating economic climate — Slamdance will donate 10% of ticket proceeds back to the filmmakers.
The fest is screening 14 feature films — 10 of which are in competition — and 8 feature documentaries, all of which are in competition. In addition, there will be 56 short films screening.
Plus, there are a couple of special screenings, including the Straight 8 event where anybody can register to receive a single roll of Super-8 film that they can use to direct their own in-camera edited mini-masterpiece. Also, on the 26th, there will be a special retrospective of the works of renegade ’60s filmmaker J.X. Williams.
