“RuPaul’s Drag Race” has had many memorable guest judges for its season premiere: Lady Gaga in Season 9, Christina Aguilera in Season 10, Nicki Minaj in Season 12 and Ariana Grande in the currently airing Season 15, to name a few.
But Britney Spears — whose discography has been a lip sync mainstay on the reality competition series (four times in Season 13 alone!) — has yet to make an appearance on the show, despite numerous efforts.
“Of course,” replied “Drag Race” creator and executive producer Fenton Bailey when asked if Spears has been invited to judge. “Many stars are approached for ‘Drag Race.’ And it hasn’t been possible – whether her schedule or people or her own desires, you know?”

When Britney Spears attorney Matthew Rosengart appears in Los Angeles probate court September 29 before Judge Brenda Penny and argues for his client’s release from a 13-year conservatorship overseen by her estranged father, the motion stands to correct a wrong that began long before #freebritney, or Chris Crocker’s plea 14 years ago to “Leave Britney alone!,” or even her 1993 debut on the Mickey Mouse Club.
The abuse of Spears’ conservatorship, which rendered her the legal equivalent of a child, also speaks to an abuse that threatens many child performers — kidfluencers, TikTok and reality stars, and anyone who lives in the 44 states that don’t embrace the Coogan Act. Child labor laws have not kept up with the entertainment landscape, and it’s the kids who stand to suffer from it
As a former child actor who later became a homeless teenager, I think about stage parents and our inadequate child labor laws a lot.

Chris Crocker once called on people to leave Britney Spears alone. Now, more than 13 years later, the influencer is happy the singer's voice is finally being heard. At a virtual hearing on Wednesday, June 23, the pop star read a lengthy statement by phone calling her 13-year-long court-approved conservatorship "abusive" and "stupid" and requesting that it come to an end without her being evaluated by a therapist. It marked Britney's first public statement about the arrangement, which was first put in place in 2008, after she was hospitalized and received psychiatric treatment, and comes amid an ongoing court battle to remove her father Jamie Spears from his...

Internet personality and content creator Chris Crocker minted their famous 2007 “Leave Britney Alone” video as a non-fungible token and sold it for about $44,000.
Crocker launched the sale on the Nft marketplace Foundation on April 9th with a starting price of 10 ethereum (the cryptocurrency used most frequently to buy and sell NFTs), or $23,729.20. Based on the auction history, it looks as though there was a bit of a bidding war over the next week between two people. Craig Ferguson may be no Chris Crocker, but the Peabody-winning television host recently went viral for defending Britney Spears during an opening monologue from 2007.
In the old Late Late Show clip, Ferguson asks for sympathy and understanding for the pop singer as she publicly went through a rough patch. From shaving her head to checking into rehab, the “Toxic” singer became the subject of jokes and grabby headlines for all forms of media.
“I’m starting to feel uncomfortable making fun of these people,” he said. “Comedy should have a certain amount of joy in it. It should be about us attacking the powerful people, attacking the politicians and the Trumps and the blowhards, going after them. We shouldn’t be attacking the vulnerable people.”
Ferguson continues: “I think my aim’s been off a bit and I want to change it. So tonight no Britney Spears jokes. This woman has two kids.

Chris Crocker is speaking out about the death threats he received after posting his "Leave Britney Alone" video in 2007. In the viral video, the then-19 year old expressed utter sadness over the way the media and public treated Britney Spears. At the time, a tearful Chris implored, "All you people want is more, more, more, more, more—leave her alone!" This emotional clip became a talking point for comedians and talk show hosts, mainly at the expense of Crocker. Now, Crocker is once more back in the spotlight, but this time critics are seeing the error of their ways. As one person tweeted, "The 'Leave Britney alone' dude was right all along. History will look...

Britney Spears is one of the most-covered and least-known celebrities of the modern era. She is a millennial icon whose songs were the soundtrack of a generation. A choreographed contradiction from her earliest burst onto pop stardom, the singer became a blank canvass for anyone carrying a paint brush. The FX docuseries The New York Times Presents “Framing Britney Spears” is an attempt to find the artist’s place in the gallery. It is also searching for Britney’s whereabouts in general. Spears was placed into a conservatorship when she was 26 years old. That was 13 years ago this month, and she has been petitioning the court to have that changed.
Britney’s conservatorship, overseen by her father Jamie Spears, has been profitable. With a net worth of over $60 million, maybe too profitable to ever get resolved. It could be a form of life imprisonment and wannabe jailers appear to come...

"Leave [Britney Spears] alone!" Jonas Mekas exclaims, in this excerpt from his 365 Films Project in 2007. The project, all of which can be found on Mekas's website for free, records the filmmaker's daily interactions with mundane artifacts , including the tabloids surrounding Britney Spears after she'd shaved her head. Spears's plight strikes Mekas as a sign of the impossibility for an artist to be truly "normal." As Ed Halter points out, Jonas Mekas's video-blog entry (published in January) comes "months before Chris Crocker," whose video "Leave Britney Alone!" echoes Mekas in its front-facing camera and strong defense of the pop star. When returning to many of Britney Spears's music videos one also notices that she, like Mekas, remolds dimensions of personal experience to explore grander notions of the self in the world.Three months following his analysis of Britney Spears and the disparaging press, Mekas films this encounter with a young Harmony Korine,...

"Tide Pod eating is so yesterday,"— today's youth, I assume. Just months after eating laundry detergent went viral, there's a new challenge plaguing today's youth: The deodorant challenge. Teens are allowing their peers to spray deodorant on them for as long as they can stand, and they're getting seriously burned as a result. England native Jamie Prescott, 42, told Fox News that her 15-year-old daughter, Ellie, may now need a skin graft after participating in the craze. In hopes that she could save someone else's child from harm, she took to Facebook to warn parents, and it's now been shared more than 4,500 times. "For any parents who have children, please, please sit them down and show them these pictures," she wrote in the post. "These are the damaging results of something known as 'The Deodorant Challenge' which is currently doing the rounds. It literally involves spraying deodorant on to someone else for as long as possible.

Madonna has been openly critical of Lady Gaga, but in a new Netflix documentary, Gaga turns the tables and takes a shot or two at Madonna. Will it be the start of a whole new celeb feud?
Via Decider.
Lady Gaga is a performer who’s used to giving her audience a little bit more. More costume, more attitude, more high-concepts, more red meat on an awards-show dress. So when she showed up at the Toronto International Film Festival on Friday night for the world premiere of her new documentary Gaga: Five Foot Two, she not only made herself available for a post-film Q&A, she also performed a piano-only version of “Bad Romance” (similar to the one she performs in the film at Tony Bennett’s 90th birthday party) before the gathered press, fans, and...

YouTube's tenth birthday is worth celebrating, and content creator Luc Bergeron has given the site a gift. The man known for his "Best of Web" montages has released a three-minute compilation of the most well-known videos in YouTube's ten-year history.
Bergeron posted his montage on February 24th, 2015, one day after the ten-year anniversary of "Me at the zoo," the first video ever uploaded to YouTube. The compilation features many of the viral videos that are responsible for turning YouTube into a cultural phenomenon. The "Double Rainbow" guy is in there, as is "Leave Brittney Alone" star Chris Crocker and Antoine Dodson of "Bed Intruder" fame. Naturally, there are also plenty of cute babies, adorable animals, and embarrassing fails. Toward the end of the video, Bergeron highlights several of YouTube's homegrown stars--everyone from the Action Movie Kid to Dude Perfect to PewDiePie.

At last year's Sundance, Chris Moukarbel and Valerie Veatch's "Me at the Zoo" was a surprise hit. The documentary, which explores YouTube and Internet celebrity through the story of one Chris Crocker, was picked up early in the festival by HBO and has had a nice run on television and at festivals. The film brought Crocker, best known for his "Leave Britney Alone" viral video, to a mainstream audience and exposed Crocker's intelligence and long-standing popularity on the web video platform. Using archival videos from all over YouTube and Crocker's channel, the film weaves an incredible story about Crocker's rise to Internet stardom. Glee’s much hyped second Britney Spears tribute episode aired Thursday. This episode was always going to be a challenge in regards to musical numbers – all the most loved Britney songs were quite rightfully covered in the first Britney tribute. So instead of focusing on the singer’s career highlights, this episode attempted to replicate some of Britney’s more troubled moments, with nods to the head shaving incident, Britney attacking the paparazzi with an umbrella and her much criticised 2007 VMAs performance. It even included a shout out to Chris Crocker’s viral “Leave Britney alone!” video. Moreover, the first Britney tribute is probably one of the episodes that come to mind when any fan is asked to recall a really awful episode of Glee and in my opinion the start of the show’s decline. Was the second tribute better than the first? Marginally – it could hardly be worse.

"Glee" did its second Britney Spears tribute episode last night -- and while the first go-around was light and fluffy fun, "Britney 2.0" went to a much darker place. With no guest appearances by the pop star herself this time around, Heather Morris' "Brittany S. Pierce" was left acting out the real Spears' very public mental breakdown on the show. The episode, which aired right after Britney on "The X Factor," contained jokes about hair shaving, umbrella-packed paparazzi fights, Chris Crocker and Cheetos ... leading up to a reenactment of Spears' infamous 2007 Vma performance of "Gimme More."Sure, there were moments about the real Britney's "comeback" -- including a reference to her $14 mil payday for her new judging gig -- but was it all in bad taste for a "tribute" episode?Check out some highlights from the episode above. What do you think? Read more...

Britney Spears begins her wild/weird/potentially boring journey on The X Factor this week, and AfterElton will definitely be present to see if the pride of Kentwood, Louisiana, is a worthy judge in the tradition of unimpeachable greats like Paula Abdul, Steven Tyler, and Lil Mama. But before we begin that trek, let's remember why Britney Spears is worth celebrating in the first place. Here's the problem: Britney fanatics are essentially obsessed for nonexistent reasons. For all of Ms. Spears' superstardom and success, she is not a visionary. Or a self-possessed artist. Or even a thundering performer. And that's fine. She is simply a very likable person in some fundamental ways, and it's fine to love her for those reasons. But I'd like to offer nine more reasons that Britney Spears may be worth some idolatry, particularly to her gay fans. Ready? Here are (as far as I can remember) Britney's most lovable attributes.

Sorry, Kristen Stewart, but "Twilight" fan Emma Clark is on Team RPatz.
The Twi-hard community was dealt a devastating blow on Wednesday when Stewart, who plays Bella Cullen née Swan in "The Twilight Saga," released a statement publicly acknowledging that she cheated on "Twilight" star Robert Pattinson with director Rupert Sanders. What looked like the perfect relationship -- the pair had been dating offscreen for many years; remember those happy faces! -- ended in a fit of tears ... Clark's tears.
Taking a page out of Chris Crocker's handbook, Clark -- otherwise known as the Nutty Madam in the "Twilight" community -- posted a video on YouTube with the following message: "How Could You Do This Kristen?"
Despite Stewart's public apology -- "I love him, I love him. I'm so sorry." -- Clark is still visibly upset over the actress' poor decision.
"You were stupid enough to get photographed doing it!

Internet superstar Chris Crocker is best known for his "Leave Britney Alone" video, which has racked up close to 44 million views since it hit YouTube in September 2007.
Since then, Crocker has continued to record videos discussing everything from gender identity to dying his hair, has become a recording artist and has found himself referenced in all corners of the pop culture landscape from "South Park" to "Hannah Montana" to "Glee."
The Huffington Post last spoke to Crocker in January as he was preparing to debut a documentary about his life, "Me @ The Zoo," directed by Chris Moukarbel and Valerie Veatch, at the Sundance Film Festival (see the trailer above). I've always had a thing for Ryan Phillippe, going back to Little Boy Blue, which was an admittedly twisted movie, but at least he showed off his butt. Now he's set to direct himself in Shreveport, in which he'll play a fading movie star that gets kidnapped and tortured.
My friend Rod McCullom has a fantastic piece in Ebony looking at the evolution of gay rights in Kenya, and how outside of South Africa, they're leading the way for gay rights on the continent.

The RoboCop remake. Booo. Blah blah blah. The end. [You need more than that, - Ed.]. Fine. RoboCop remake – yeah, you know the one. You may know it from the anticipation that it inspires in your household during conversations similar to “Oh, they’re remaking RoboCop? Please pass the salt. What were you saying?” Yeah, you could say I’m not really keen on this remake. Perhaps unfairly so. But I doubt it. Have you not watched the video I made where I dressed up like Chris Crocker and cried “Leave RoboCop alone!” (24 views and counting, natch)?
Anyway, the fucking RoboCop remake keeps casting pretty awesome people. First up, it cast Gary Oldman. I love him. Then it cast Sam Jackson. I love him like I do my father – in a vaguely terrified fashion. Then Abbie Cornish. Again, great. Now, THR is reporting, it may be casting Hugh Laurie.

Little did he know she was tweeting the whole thing to her 13,000 followers. He was evidently drinking beer and was wasted, which is a no-no for someone who's appeared on The View talking about kicking addiction. It's also worth noting Presley's final tweet before the flight.
We now have a supercomputer that can simulate a nuclear explosion down to the molecular level, giving us insight into how our arsenal is holding up, or possibly how we can turn Mark Ruffalo into The Hulk for real.

I'm not going to talk about the concept that was unveiled for the fourth season of Glee, because technically it's a spoiler for the rest of this season. But TV Guide has a good analysis about why it will and won't work.
Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie are teaming up again now that Laurie has been freed from his shackles on House. They're being incredibly secretive about the whole thing, but it's sure to be comedy gold. I just hope it makes it to this side of the pond.
Do you know what true f*ck you money is? It's when you're George Lucas, and your rich snooty neighbors won't let you use a giant ranch you own to build a state of the art movie studio, so you decide to build low income housing on it since they insist that it's a residential neighborhood.

Days before its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival, HBO bought television rights to Chris Moukarbel and Valerie Veatch's "Me at the Zoo," a film about Internet celebrity told through the story of Chris Crocker. The film will debut on HBO on June 25, 2012. Crocker catapulted to fame in 2007 after he asked the world to "Leave Britney Alone!" in response to Spears' tough times in the media spotlight (e.g. the head-shaving incident). When this happened, Crocker had already been developing a modest loyal fan base for his performative videos. Indiewire spoke to the directing team and Crocker earlier this year at Sundance. Check out the trailer below:...

Josh Dixon is half-African-American, half-Japanese, a Stanford graduate, adopted, and a likely Olympic gymnast. He also just came out publicly as gay in a great interview at Outsports. He says that being gay in the sport has been met with a shrug by his teammates, and we couldn't be happier to have a new out world-class athlete.
The list of records The Avengers broke this weekend is nearly endless, with $200.3 million in U.S. box office, the fastest film to reach $200 million, biggest domestic opening ever, and the highest Saturday ever. It's now pulled in $641.8 million worldwide, and has to help ease the pain of John Carter at Disney, sadly too late to save out studio head Rich Ross, who was fired last week.
In sad news, George Lindsay, most famous for playing Goober on The Andy Griffith Show, has passed away at the age of 83.

Over the last five years Chris Crocker has racked up over 270 million views on YouTube, many of which came from his 2007 "Leave Britney [Spears] Alone!" clip.
The Internet star has kept people talking -- and guessing -- with his unconventional approaches to everything from music to sex, but recently the thing that has gotten him the most attention is his new look.
Crocker, who in January told HuffPost Gay Voices that he lived as a woman for three years, is featured in the latest issue of V magazine and many who are only familiar with his once feminine appearance might be shocked by his transformation, captured for the fashion publication by photographer Danielle Levitt.

HBO has announced its summer doc schedule, which includes nonfiction films about performance artist Marina Abramović, "Leave Britney Alone" internet celeb Chris Crocker and gay activist Vito Russo, as well as examinations of dog ownership, birdwatching in Central Park, the 2011 tsunami in Japan, supermodels and unemployment in Long Island. The films will air Monday nights, kicking off on June 18th. One Nation Under Dog: Stories Of Fear, Loss And Betrayal (debuting June 18) reveals the sobering realities behind America’s obsession with dogs, using startling images to show not only how far some dog lovers will go for theirpets, but how far the nation has to go before it treats all dogs humanely. Americans have conducted a long love affair with canines, but lost amidst all the pampering are unpleasant truths about dog ownership, care and commerce, not to mention the daunting odds that face millions of unwanted shelter animals. If you take a look at the music charts today, it’s rare to see a Top 10 that isn’t filled with glossy American popstars who just want to dance on the floor/party rock/put their hands up/raise their glass (I could keep on going) so sometimes it’s healthy to take a look at things from the other side of the world. Over in South Korea, China and Japan it is very rare for any of the artists we take for granted to dominate the charts considering these countries are each filled with their own pop culture. Cracking the east Asian market is the equivalent of British musicians trying to crack America – near on impossible. You may think ‘What’s the point? I’ve never heard of any of these people and the only ones listening to them are those crazy asian kids who stay on chatrooms...

"Game of Thrones" fans have a lot to be excited about. A brand-new 10-episode season is set to premiere Sunday night, bringing viewers back to the wicked world of Westeros for the first time since poor Ned lost his head in the spring of 2011. With the series' de facto protagonist dead and gone, it's time for other characters to step up and fill the void — such as the heroic Robb Stark, the villainous Joffrey Baratheon, and even the morally ambiguous Tyrion Lannister. As "Thrones" moves further along in author George R.R. Martin's original "Song of Ice and Fire" timeline, fans can expect more and more cheers, jeers and flat-out dumbfounding shocks all season long.

As The Advocate turns 45 years old, they've put up a hall of fame, from Pat Rocco to Dustin Lance Black and everyone in between. It's a great, brief gay history lesson.
A new way to maim myself – a self balancing unicycle. But it would be great to pick up boys. I know I hit on the cute guy at Bridge Day two years ago on the unicycle with the puppy.
Speaker Boehner has appointed National Organization for Marriage founder and author of the anti-gay Manhattan Declaration Robert George to the Religious Freedom Commission, making him a government employee for the next two years.
Cutie (and equality advocate) Josh Hutcherson has been named Breakthrough Performer of the Year by CinemaCon. That's a bit of an understatement after The Hunger Games.

Well, no one saw this one coming — except for maybe Willam herself.
“Will you please step forward?” RuPaul asked the controversial queen at the very end of last night’s new episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race, sending what should have been the routine elimination of Phi Phi O’Hara or Sharon Needles into a totally different — and weird — direction.
It was only after Willam — who was actually the winner of the night’s fremeny challenge, alongside partner Latrice Royale — came back to the front of the stage that — Spoiler Alert — it was revealed that she was being disqualified from the show.

This is basically my version of Chris Crocker's 'Leave Britney Alone' video. Except it's about Elena. And it's not a video. I've got a bone to pick with you, Vampire Diaries fans. Ok, some of you. I'm used to seeing strong, often crazy, responses following a particularly intense episode -- but the comments I saw from "fans" after the Feb. 9 episode, "Dangerous Liaisons," were borderline disturbing. A quick search in the comments section of my recap yielded more than 25 results for the word "hate," all of which were directed at Elena (Nina Dobrev) for what she did to Damon (Ian Somerhalder.) I think it's time we all take a massive chill pill. I don't care which ship you sail on; you need to take a step back and look at Elena's situation objectively. Elena may have strong feelings for Damon, but she and Stefan (Paul Wesley) dated for a...

"As soon as people hear it's the Chris Crocker story," Crocker himself told Indiewire, "people are like 'There's so many other stories that deserve a documentary.'" Crocker became an Internet sensation after he took to YouTube to shame the media and America for intruding too far into Britney Spears' personal life. His "Leave Britney Alone" video has over 42 million views. The reaction Crocker describes others having to the film is unsurprising, sure, but "Me @ the Zoo" is an exciting exploration of Internet media culture. The film also shows Crocker take his genderbending personae around his small Tennessee town and, following his Internet-fueled fame, around the world. Those not familiar with Crocker's videos beyond "Leave Britney Alone," may be surprised at how artful Crocker is, and his story of finding connection to a larger world through YouTube is a success story from the...

Our film Me @ The Zoo began in another form entirely. We were making a long form art video for the NYC-based arts organization Rhizome. The artwork was about exploring the ways that technology mediates our lives as a generation comes of age watching reality television and using social media. It seemed like what is considered to be performance has shifted and “acting” was losing ground as a popular medium. Video technology enables us to turn the content of our lives into a kind of show. If you grew up watching reality TV, there are so many representations of young people performing their own identity as if they are characters. We even spent a few months shooting at the New York Reality TV School, where you can be trained to become a reality star.
