The Trump administration’s push for a huge increase in tariffs on imports last week sent financial markets into a tailspin — and a host of new viewers to the cable channels who cover those markets.
The tariffs, announced by President Donald Trump at a White House event on April 2, triggered big sell-offs in markets worldwide over the next few days. In the United States, the S&P 500 index has declined by almost 11 percent in the days since the tariff announcement; the Dow Jones Industrial Average and Nasdaq Composite have fallen by similar amounts.
A couple of lines, however, are going up: those representing the audiences on CNBC and Fox Business Network. Both saw their ratings jump in the days after the announcement.
From Wednesday to Friday (April 2-4), CNBC averaged 293,000 viewers during market hours (9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Et), 36 percent more than the previous four weeks. For its full daytime programming slate,...

Rushing to set today at 2:25 p.m. Et, Fox Business Network anchor Liz Claman (3-4 p.m.’s The Claman Countdown) saw a headline on Reuters: “Euro Extends Losses as EU Announces Retaliatory Tariffs on the U.S.”
“I immediately said, ‘That’s our lead,'” she told The Hollywood Reporter at 4:30 p.m. There was just one problem … Thomson Reuters was not quite right. What the EU actually said was that they’re thinking about it; Claman and her producers uncovered the error at exactly 2:59 p.m. The joys of live television!
Well, sometimes it is a joy.
“We are happiest when we tear up the show five minutes before the top of the hour. However, we’ve been tearing up the show in middle of the broadcast,” Claman said. “Oh, my God. We’ve been moving things around like a chess board on steroids.

Not many people who work at Fox News Channel get to push back at Sean Hannity. Lawrence Jones is one of them.
When Jones was just getting started at the Fox Corp.-backed conservative-leaning news outlet, Hannity took him under his wing, and offered advice, even the chance to start appearing on his well-watched primetime program. At first, “I told him no,” Jones recalls, “I’m more libertarian. You’re more conservative. I just want to be able to do what I do.” Hannity told him the pair could use their differences to create interesting segments. “We will make it a thing on TV,” Jones remembers being told.
Lawrence Jones continues to do things differently at Fox News Channel. At 31, he is decidedly younger than many of the network’s best-known personalities. He is one of just a handful of people of color who hold regular posts on the Fox News schedule.

As Los Angeles waits for approval to move forward on reopening businesses, AMC Theatres CEO Adam Aron said his company plans to reopen theaters on March 19.
“It’ll take a few days to assemble staff, but all protocols are set and we will open Los Angeles theaters one week from tomorrow, no matter what,” Aron told Fox Business’ Liz Claman on Thursday.
Aron’s comments came hours before county health officials announced that L.A. will move into the second tier of California’s reopening system, allowing movie theaters to reopen at a capacity limit of 25%. Reaching the second tier requires counties to lower the number of daily Covid-19 cases to seven per 100,000 people, but that was raised to 10 per 100,000 people after California reached its goal of vaccinating 2 million people in lower-income communities.

Lou Dobbs’ program is off the schedule at Fox Business Network, and Larry Kudlow’s will soon be on.
Fox Business Network will launch a new 4 p.m. program led by Kudlow on Tuesday, February 16, putting the former Trump economic adviser and CNBC personality on screen just as the stock markets close for the day. Fox Business did not offer a title for the new program, but said it would “feature closing market analysis as well as interviews with major industry leaders influencing Wall Street, Washington and business in America.”
Fox Business announced Kudlow’s hire late last month.
Kudlow’s show will air again at 7 p.m., an hour previously reserved for repeats of “Lou Dobbs Tonight.” Fox Business abruptly announced Friday that it was canceling Dobbs’ “Lou Dobbs Tonight,” its most-watched show. Dobbs is one of three anchors employed by Fox News Media who have been named in...

Larry Kudlow, the former CNBC host turned Trump economic advisor, has found a new media job after his time at the White House — and it’s not with his former employer.
Kudlow, who took on the unenviable job of predicting a quick V-shaped recovery for the nation in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic and also tried to make the case the contagion was contained before it took full root in the U.S,, will launch a new weekday program for Fox Business Network. Starting February 8, he will provide financial analysis on U.S. and global affairs across all Fox News Media properties. Details of his new program will be announced at a later time.
He was named Assistant to the President for Economic Policy and Director of the National Economic Council in 2018, where he coordinated the administration’s domestic and economic policy agenda.

A little-known Washington state group raised eyebrows earlier this month when it filed a lawsuit calling for a judge to keep Fox News from airing false information about the coronavirus pandemic. Now it has raised some hackles, too: Fox News has moved to dismiss the legal proceeding.
The Fox News Media motion, filed Tuesday, asks the Washington state court to reject a suit from a little-known group known as the Washington League for Increased Transparency and Ethics, or Washlite, that Fox News says would essentially impose a gag order on its opinion and commentary. In the filing, Fox News Media says the “claims here are frivolous because the statements at issue are core political speech on matters of public concern. The First Amendment does not permit censoring this type of speech based on the theory that it is ‘false’ or ‘outrageous.’ Nor does the law of the State of Washington.

Trish Regan, who gained notice on Fox Business Network for a primetime program that developed a specialty for heated political talk, is leaving the network, just days after the show was removed from its schedule.
Regan’s show was taken off the air earlier this month in a bid to devote more newsgathering staff to coronavirus coverage. Several other programs have been trimmed as well, but Regan had captured attention for a vociferous segment that aired earlier in March suggesting liberals were overstating the effects of the spread of coronavirus to discredit President Donald Trump. A graphic that accompanied one segment that aired read “Coronavirus Impeachment Scam.”
“Fox Business has parted ways with Trish Regan – we thank her for her contributions to the network over the years and wish her continued success in her future endeavors,” the network said in a statement. “We will continue our reduced live primetime schedule...

Robin Roberts, one of the most familiar faces in morning-tv news, will start to co-anchor ABC’s “Good Morning America” from home, after a doctor recommended she do so due to her medical history and the nation’s continuing struggle with the spread of coronavirus
Roberts has no symptoms and is in good health, but has grappled in years past with myelodysplastic syndrome, a bone marrow disease, and took time off from the show in late 2012 and early 2013 for a bone-marrow transplant. “It’s hard to leave because you want the normalcy. You want it not just for yourself, but for your viewers,” Roberts said Tuesday in what will be her last broadcast for the time being from the Times Square Studios that house “Gma” production in New York. She added: “I’ll be able to keep my slippers on the whole morning.”

Liz Claman is the latest Fox Business Network anchor to go into self-quarantine as a result of the coronavirus epidemic.
Claman appeared briefly on her usual hour, the 3 p.m. “Claman Countdown,” to tell viewers she was six days in to a quarantine process. “I miss you guys,” she said.
Claman is one of a handful of on-air personalities to be taken out of regular rotation due to the spread of coronavirus. Charles Payne told viewers last week he was staying at home, owing to his wife having a compromised immune system in a town that has suffered during the outbreak, while evening host Lou Dobbs has also decided to isolate himself. Four employees at Fox News Media have tested positive for coronavirus in recent days and top executives at the Fox Corporation-owned unit have vowed to keep employees informed about workplace conditions.

Fox Business Network plans to trim two more hours of its daily programming schedule, the latest in a series of maneuvers by news organizations amid an intense cycle related to the coronavirus outbreak.

Fox News is making a return to Twitter, more than a year after going silent on the social-media platform.
At 2:18 p.m. on Nov. 8, 2018, the Fox Corporation-owned cable-news outlet issued a tweet telling its followers that a federal appeals court had ruled against the Trump administration’s desire to end the U.S. program that gives immigrants a chance to continue working and living in the United States. After that, the network’s main feed went silent. Since that time, there has not been a headline, a video, an alert or even a programming note.
Now the news outlet is poised to resurface on the venue, with executives envisioning the chance to use it as a service or a means of getting information about the coronavirus outbreak to followers. Approximately 18.5 million people follow the network on Twitter.

Fox Business Network said it would scrap most of its primetime schedule by putting two of its programs on hiatus “until further notice” in order to staff coverage of the coronavirus crisis elsewhere within Fox News Media.
The network said in a statement that its 8 p.m. hour, “Trish Regan Primetime,” and 9 p.m. hour, “Kennedy,” would be replaced by long form programming.

Hustler Magazine founder Larry Flynt is offering $10 million for information that leads to the impeachment of Donald Trump, according to a screenshot obtained and tweeted by Fox Business host Liz Claman and retweeted by Flynt. The porn kingpin’s full-page ad in Sunday’s edition of the Washington Post offers the cash reward “for information leading to the impeachment and removal from office of Donald J.
