“Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio” has picked up another award on its march to the Oscars, nabbing the feature prize at the 50th Annie Awards, presented by Asifa-Hollywood, on Saturday evening.
In addition to being named the top film by the animation industry, “Pinocchio” led the winners’ list with five trophies overall, including the award for best direction for del Toro and fellow director Mark Gustafson. Guillermo del Toro's latest film is a beautiful, emotionally resonant stop-motion animation adaptation of the classic children's tale "Pinocchio," but fans expecting a fluffy, frolic-filled romp like its predecessors are sure to be disappointed. "Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio," now streaming on Netflix, is set in Italy during the rise of fascism circa World War II, and it's a much darker take on the material than we've seen before. To start, we have returnee Calleen Koh, who made a splash two years ago with her hilarious (and strangely erotic) short, “Sexy Sushi.” This year, she returns to Cartoons Underground with a newer, longer short, “To Kill the Birds and the Bees,” which similarly revolves around the theme of sexual taboo – though this time in the confines of a hyper-sexual, yet hyper-prudish, society. This year's Emmy season has come and gone, and amongst the historic wins for Sheryl Lee Ralph, Quinta Brunson, and Lee Jung-jae, Netflix also took home the statue for Best Animated Program for the very first time. The streaming giant has been nominated in the past for "Big Mouth" and "BoJack Horseman," but it was "Arcane" that finally brought home the gold, and made Netflix the first streamer to ever take home the award.
This year's category was absolutely stacked, with "Arcane" besting the already Emmy award-winning series "The Simpsons," "Bob's Burgers," and "Rick and Morty," as well as the Chadwick Boseman-voiced episode of "What If...?" for Disney+. Netflix’s horror blockbuster ”Stranger Things” and HBO’s black comedy/whodunit “The White Lotus” led the Creative Arts Emmys this weekend with five awards apiece. “Euphoria,” the gritty teen phenom, followed right behind with four prizes, while Netflix’s global sensation, “Squid Game,” the Korean survival drama, captured three wins, as did HBO’s popular “Barry” comedy. However, the critically-acclaimed, mind-bending “Severance” (Apple TV+) managed only two wins.

Fans of the Netflix animated anthology series "Love, Death + Robots" can thank their lucky stars, because the streamer just announced a fourth season! The acclaimed series from executive producers Tim Miller ("Deadpool") and David Fincher ("Mank") will return for another round of robot-related realities, drawn forth from the minds of some of the world's greatest writers and animators. Netflix's episode of "Love, Death + Robots" Vol. 3 titled "Jibaro" was recently nominated for an Emmy for outstanding short form animated program. The short was directed by Spanish director Alberto Mielgo, who won an Oscar earlier this year for his short animated film "The Windshield Wiper." For those unfamiliar with Netflix's "Love, Death + Robots," the series consists of a collection of animated shorts that all center on three core themes: love, death, and robots. Sounds simple enough, right? But there's a lot more abstraction, complexity, and depth than one would imagine. While the short was created with the intention to leave room for many different interpretations, one thing that's not clear - particularly for Latinx viewers - is why it was named "Jibaro."

In coming up with the idea for the “Jibaro” episode of “Love, Death + Robots,” Alberto Mielgo actually found inspiration when looking inward. “I wanted to talk a little bit about myself, and I wanted to talk about characters that are not necessarily heroic. I wanted to talk about something that is pretty much a toxic relationship,” the writer and director tells Gold Derby during our recent webchat (watch the exclusive video interview above). The Emmy award-winning animated anthology series "Love, Death + Robots" is back for a third installment of, well, love, death, and robots! This season will see the series' first sequel episode, with a short dedicated to the "Three Robots" that stole everyone's heart in season 1. Growing a dedicated animation film fund, Catalonia looks set to grab an ever-larger piece of this action. Fresh off the first-ever Netflix is a Joke comedy festival, the streamer confirmed which performances will be available to view in the coming weeks, including tributes to late comedians such as Bob Saget and Robin Williams and the yet-to-be-announced date for Gabriel “Fluffy” Iglesias’s groundbreaking set at Dodger Stadium.
Featuring a wide range of events and stars, the festival also made headlines for some of its comedians’ jokes, such as Pete Davidson’s digs at Kanye West. After a two-and-a half year hiatus, renowned Spanish producer Manuel Cristobal has returned to toon production, joining the team behind animated feature project “The Glassworker,” directed by Usman Riaz, and created by Pakistan-based Mano Animation Studios.
“The Glassworker” marks the first hand-drawn animated feature from Pakistan. Scheduled for a 2023 release, the project is tipped for a big fest Wip berth in the upcoming months.
Targeting family audiences, the film is set in a location loosely inspired by Pakistan, telling the story of young Vincent and his father Tomas, who run the finest glass workshop in the country and find their lives upended by an approaching war in which they want no part.
The arrival in their town of an army colonel and his young talented, violinist daughter, Alliz, shakes their reality and tests the relationship between father and son.
The love that develops between Vincent and Alliz is challenged constantly...

Exclusive: Barry Jenkins, Adele Romanski and Mark Ceryak’s production company Pastel has hired Kiva Reardon as VP of Film, appointing Karolina Peysakhov as VP of Television. Both have already started working out of Pastel’s Los Angeles office.
Prior to joining Pastel, Reardon served as Associate Director of Film Programs at the Academy Museum, and Lead Programmer of Contemporary World Cinema at the Toronto International Film Festival. She also previously worked with the Miami International Film Festival, Hot Docs, and the International Film Festival Rotterdam, and in 2013 founded cléo journal, an online publication dedicated to creating space for feminist voices in film criticism, which ran until 2019. Reardon has spoken on numerous panels and served on festival juries around the world.
Peysakhov most recently served as VP of Film and Television at Blue Harp, where she helped set up projects for Netflix, Amazon, Showtime, FX, Lionsgate, Sony, UCP, Peacock and Gaumont.

The directing duo behind “The Lego Movie” and co-producers of “Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse” penned an opinion piece for Variety calling out the Oscars’ handling of the animated categories, especially when “Encanto” won Best Animated Feature. Presenters Lily James, Halle Bailey, and Naomi Scott (who’ve all played Disney princesses) took to the stage, saying, “So many kids watch these movies over and over… and over and over and over and over… I think some parents out there know exactly what we’re talking about.”

Chicago – Usually these Oscar wrap ups are ordinary. But in a shocking event at the 94th Academy Awards, eventual Best Actor winner Will Smith slapped presenter Chris Rock after Rock made a joke about Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith. Oh and by the way, Coda wins the Best Picture in a historic honor.
The Chris Rock joke was in reference to Jada’s hairline … apparently he didn’t know that she had an Alopecia diagnosis, which includes hair loss. He asked, referring to her bare scalp, if she was to star in G.I. Jane 2 (Ed. Note: I thought she’d been a young recruit in G.I. Jane the original). Will Smith took exception to the remark, walked on stage and slapped Rock. The ABC-tv feed bleeped the remarks, but international feeds caught Rock reacting by saying, “Will Smith just smacked the sh*t out of me.” Smith, not done,...

“Dune” cinematographer Greig Fraser and editor Joe Walker were among those who spoke out about the Academy’s decision to cut eight categories from the live telecast at Sunday’s Oscars.
Earlier this week, dozens of sound designers, engineers and mixers signed a petition challenging the move to award the sound Oscar during its pre-telecast hour on Sunday. As threatened, guild members wore their badges upside down as a form of silent protest.
In the press room after winning the cinematography Oscar, Fraser, whose category was shown in main part of the show, said, “Everybody in this crowd realizes why this happens, we understand the economics. I just want my particular collaborators, the production design, editing, makeup and hair people to be equally rewarded for their jobs.”
Walker, who won for editing “Dune,” said, “I feel strongly that that was a disservice to our eight categories that were not televised live.
