Chicago – On September 9th, 2017, it seemed like the whole of The Second City theater on Wells Street in Chicago let out a collective cry of “Norm!” The favorite barfly of TV’s “Cheers,” George Wendt, came back to his old comedy stomping ground at The Second City to participate in “I Can’t Believe They Wendt There: The Roast of George Wendt.”
The roasters included the hottest current TV and movie stars, including Bob Odenkirk (“Better Call Saul”), Keegan-Michael Key (“Key & Peele”) and Jason Sudeikis (“Saturday Night Live”), along with The Second City alumni and celebs Julia Sweeney, Betty Thomas and Joel Murray. The roast was a benefit for Gilda’s Club Chicago, the cancer support community named for the late comic legend, Gilda Radner.

Of all the franchise reboots due to be churned out by Hollywood in the coming years, one of the most highly anticipated is The Predator, from 20th Century Fox. Directed by Shane Black (who starred in the original Predator in 1987), from a script he co-write with Fred Dekker, it’s intended to reignite the iconic film series and draw an entirely new generation of fans to its high concept premise. Updates on the production have been few and far between, though – which is why it’s noteworthy that a recent conversation between Stacey Snider and Variety provides a new perspective on the movie.
Stacey Snider gave the interview to mark her first anniversary as Chairperson and CEO of 20th Century Fox, and in a wide-ranging discussion, the studio head took time to detail her...

“You’re tearing me apart Lisa!” – The Room, written and directed by Tommy Wiseau, is on the biggest cult films of all time with special screenings, fan events and “quote-along” films appearing across both the UK and Us all the time.
Indeed, Wiseau himself has become something of a legend with the film and it was no surprise that a film based on the making of the film and the director’s conception of the story would make its way to the big screen. Well, thanks to James Franco (Why Him?, The Interview), we now have that film in the form of The Disaster Artist, based on the book by The Room co-star Greg Sestero and it now has a prime awards season spot at the end of the year (via The Hollywood Reporter).

Win It All fluctuates the highs and lows of Joe Swanberg’s cinematic lyricism (indie and simplistic), but smartly pushes all-in at the right moments. Dramatic beats are so in-tune with the gambler’s lament in this pursuit of mega-buck paydays that are always “right around the corner.” It’s more than just an addiction, though. The gambler is someone who becomes accustomed to losing, because risk and reward go hand-in-hand. Adrenaline spikes even when cash flows outward, because there’s always a chance for redemption. Taking down a massive pot with pocket Aces makes you feel invincible until your full-house gets busted by quads – trust me. Then it’s doubt, self-depreciation and another stack of chips that are going to turn your life around until they vanish, too.

The eighth season of Archer picks up where the seventh left off, with the titular character’s bullet-riddled body floating in a Los Angeles swimming pool. It begins without humor, in the midst of death. Woodhouse is eulogized and buried, while Archer lies in a coma and a voiceover recites Bible verses. Lana and Mallory wait next to Archer’s comatose body for him to wake up, wondering what he might be dreaming about.

Though Arnold Schwarzenegger sadly won’t return to engage his old extraterrestrial nemesis in battle again in The Predator, director Shane Black has assembled an impressive cast of potential victims to take his place. The likes of Thomas Jane (The Punisher), Keegan Michael-Key (Keanu), Boyd Holbrook (Logan), Olivia Munn (X-Men: Apocalypse) and Yvonne Strahovski (Dexter) are already in the firing line, and now we can add one more to the list.
The movie has been shooting for a couple of weeks already, so we figured the cast was all filled out, but now Deadline reports that Jake Busey has signed on to join the fun. Though he’s never been a very prolific actor, Busey has had memorable turns in the likes of From Dusk Till Dawn (the series), The Frighteners, Starship Troopers and Identity.

After many years establishing himself as a comedian--first on Mad TV and then teaming with that show’s Keegan--Michael Key for the equally successful Comedy Central show Key and Peele--Jordan Peele has decided to go behind the camera to make his directorial debut with the horror-thriller Get Out.
It stars Daniel Kaluuya (Sicario) as Chris Washington, whose girlfriend Rose Armitage (Allison Williams of Girls) wants to take their relationship to the next level by having him meet her parents, who she hasn’t told that her boyfriend is black. At first, it doesn’t seem to matter, but as they spend the weekend together at her parent’s remote house, they’re joined by family friends who are acting equally oddly around Chris. As Chris tries to figure out what is happening, he is led down a dark path towards something quite malevolent and deadly.

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of film and TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Monday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best film in theaters right now?”, can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: Here we are again, staring down the barrel of another year at the movies, one sure to be filled with its fair share of discoveries, disappointments, and trucks that are powered by monsters. Many of our most anticipated new films can be seen coming a mile away, but what’s the most exciting movie of 2017 that no one is talking about?

For many years, John Hamburg was known as the guy who wrote Meet the Parents and its sequels, but in 2009, he directed a comedy that would become a popular favorite, I Love You, Man, starring Paul Rudd and Jason Segel. It also helped solidify the terms “bromance” and “man-cave” in the public vernacular.
Hamburg returns this week with Why Him? a comedy that pits Bryan Cranston against James Franco in the high concept of a father having to adjust to his daughter’s new boyfriend. In the case of Franco, he’s playing an eccentric billionaire named Laird Mayhew, while Cranston plays the straight-ahead Ned Fleming, Midwest father of Zoey Deutch’s Stephanie, who has been seeing Laird without her family knowing. To make up for it, Laird invites Ned, his wife (Megan Mullally) and Stephanie’s younger brother Scotty (Griffin Gluck) out to his Silicon Valley mansion over the holidays to impress them.

For the love of all things adorable and cuddly, Keanu is the Key and Peele movie so many fans have dreamed of. After the conclusion of their smash Comedy Central sketch show, Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele have not only picked up exactly where they left off, but continue to advance their effortless comedic chemistry.
You’d think this trailer-worthy gag might run thin after the umpteenth heart-melting “meow,” but Peele and co-writer Alex Rubens have enough sense to build a story around the scene-stealing kitten. This isn’t a rehash of famous Key & Peele sketches, or a cheap branding cash-in – Jordan Peele and Keegan-Michael Key mature as comedians (through gut-busting immaturity), and adapt their off-the-wall humor for a longer, sustainable feature format.
Key and Peele star as Clarence and Rell (spelling might be off, not announced yet), two cousins who find themselves in gang trouble when Rell’s cat goes missing.

Key and Peele star as Clarence and Rell (spelling might be off, not announced yet), two cousins who find themselves in gang trouble when Rell’s cat goes missing.

The most important aspect of any comedy is whether or not it is funny. Like any movie in a specific and emotion-based genre (horror, romance, suspense, etc.) the main concern on an audience’s mind will be a simple one: does this film deliver the goods? A movie that markets itself as “bone-chilling” but winds up being laughable is a failure. So if a movie is marketed as a comedy, it has to deliver laughs. That’s the easily summed up majority of what matters.
In the spirit of that simplicity, let me state simply: Keanu is uproariously funny — so much so that you might actually miss lines of dialogue due to the volume of laughter in the theater. This fever pitch of hilarity is sustained uniformly throughout the entire film despite many aspects of the plot dragging and dipping, making the movie feel slightly longer than it actually is.

I love Keegan Michael-Key & Jordan Peele, so I'm thrilled to see that the red-band trailer for their first feature film together, Keanu, looks hilarious. The comedic duo play a couple of normal suburban guys who have to act like gangstas in order to save an adorable adopted kitten. In typical Key & Peele fashion, it looks like there's a great mixture of comedy and commentary here, touching on concepts of masculinity, identity, and culture, and I'm very excited to see what they do in a full-length movie. Key & Peele series director Peter Atencio is behind the camera here, so we know at the very least, it'll look terrific.
Keanu arrives in theaters on April 29th.

It’s original title, Kitchen Sink, tells you all you need to know about horror comedy Freaks of Nature. The movie welcomes us to the town of Dilford, where vampires top the social order, with zombies on the bottom and humans stuck in the middle. But this delicate balance is thrown into chaos when the apocalypse arrives in the form of interplanetary invaders. So yeah, it’s humans vs. vampires vs. zombies vs. aliens, and the first Nsfw trailer definitely lives up to the promise of that insane premise. Throwing in every conceivable horror trope may seem like overkill, but it works incredibly well here, with Freaks of Nature finding the perfect balance between horror and comedy. On top of that, it has a brilliant comedic cast, including Dennis Leary, Patton Oswald, Keegan Michael-Key, and Bob Odenkirk. At the very least, Freaks of Nature has future cult classic written all over it.

The follow-up to Key & Peele is here.
Jordan Peele and Keegan Michael-Key are heading to Fox for a single camera sitcom with the help of Vine star King Bach, Deadline reports. Produced by Key and Peele, the untitled comedy is loosely based on a King Bach Vine and stars Andrew Bachelor (Bach’s real name) as an undercover cop who grew up on the streets and goes back to his old neighborhood to take down the bad guys who bullied him when they were kids.
This is Key and Peele’s first project together since the end of their Emmy- winning Comedy Central sketch comedy show. Bachelor has become Vine’s biggest star, boasting 14 million followers and 5.1 billion loops. The Groundlings alum has parlayed his Vine success into a rising acting career with recurring roles on The Mindy Project, House Of Lies and Black Jesus. He also appeared on Key & Peele.

This was a hard one to say goodbye to. It felt like the end of Key and Peele totally snuck up on us, and we were not prepared. We're still not prepared, even though we have now seen how it all ends: with one last, sweet, "biiiiiiiitch," right before the guys drive off back to wherever it is they came from when they started their little True Detective homage at the start of this season. In five short seasons, Key and Peele, starring Jordan Peele and Keegan Michael-Key, gave us new vocabulary words, new, hilarious ways to talk about cultural issues, and especially new methods of finding out who our true friends are. We'll never be able to talk about Liam Neesons again without that S at...

Special effects legend Rick Baker formally announced his retirement this week. Baker cited a “cheap and fast” philosophy in the movie industry that was at odds with his desire to ensure things got done right as the catalyst for his retirement. Baker’s work stretches across several prominent films, from An American Werewolf in London to Videodrome to The Rocketeer to Ed Wood to Tim Burton’s Planet of the Apes and Tropic Thunder. Baker also worked on the Men in Black films and Michael Jackson’s famous “Thriller” music video. The 2014 feature Maleficent will now stand as his last work.
Baker will, however, be auctioning off his famous work via The Prop Store, beginning today.

Harold Ramis, John Hughes and Chevy Chase helped take the family road-trip comedy and, with National Lampoon’s Vacation, turned it into an R-rated, ’80s institution that carried on with three additional sequels. As the trend of updating old characters and checking in on them several years later continues, Ed Helms is now a grown Rusty Griswold, complete with his own dysfunctional family. He and Christina Applegate lead the latest R-rated installment, Vacation, arriving this summer.
And while the original film was plenty dark (a troublesome dog is dragged for miles tethered to a rear bumper, the Griswold grandmother dies while sitting in the backseat, etc.), this first red-band trailer for Vacation shows just how much further writers and directors John Francis Daley and Jonathan M. As someone who still doesn’t really see the point in a Vacation reboot, I can at least acknowledge that the first red-band trailer for Warner Bros.’ new take on the classic comedy seems to have its head in the right place.
After Rusty Griswold (Ed Helms), now a father, announces his plans to take his family on a cross-country road trip back to Walley World, his wife (Christina Applegate) wryly asks, “So you want to redo your vacation from 30 years ago?” He promises, “This time it will be totally different.” Quips son James (Skyler Gisondo): “I’ve never even heard of the original vacation.” Rusty assures him,”Doesn’t matter, the new vacation will stand on its own, Ok?”
That willingness on the part of writer-directors Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley (who scribed Horrible Bosses 2) to be upfront about their movie’s innate pointlessness and still...

Over the course of its four-season run, the Comedy Central show Key & Peele has grown an audience with a combination of humour and satire, with leads Keegan Michael-Key and Jordan Peele, both of whom previously worked together on the sketch comedy show MADtv, proving their versatility. The show has, over the course of its run, done everything from explore the dark side of Family Matters‘ Steve Urkel to poke fun at the Super Bowl and college football, with their “Substitute Teacher” sketch poised to become a feature length film.
The duo, and the series, have often released full sketches outside of the series, whether it involves their cinephile valet characters meeting their idol “Liam Neesons”, or two humans finding a previously unseen way to determine real humans from alien lookalikes. George Clooney and newcomer Britt Robertson (Under the Dome) adventure into Tomorrowland this May. With today’s new full-length trailer, Disney has finally given us a closer look into its upcoming dimension-jumping film, which has been shrouded with mystery since its inception.
Boasting a script from Damon Lindelof (“Lost,” Star Trek Into Darkness) and director Brad Bird (The Iron Giant, The Incredibles, Ratatouille), you can rest assured that Disney’s Tomorrowland will deliver on its promise of fantasy/sci-fi spectacle that’s simultaneously both delightful and exhilarating.
And honestly, we’ll watch any movie with rocket bathtubs.
Tomorrowland hits Cineplex theatres on May 22, and also stars Hugh Laurie, Judy Greer, Kathryn Hahn, and Keegan Michael-Key.

Fans of USA Network’s sitcom Playing House, and/or of creators Lennon Parham and Jessica St. Clair can rest easy, as Deadline is reporting that the channel has renewed the show for an 8-episode second season, following six months of speculation about the show’s fate after its first season finale.
This news is particularly heartening, as the show had appeared set for cancellation following USA’s announcement that it would be moving away from half-hour comedies and focus on hour-long dramas going forward. Playing House joins Benched and Sirens as the only three representatives of the genre on the channel.
The show’s seemingly poor ratings were a source of concern for USA. However, the series’ strength lay in its popularity on On-Demand outlets, which will lead to a unique distribution model. When the series returns, it will be premiering on VOD platforms Xfinity, TV Everywhere, and USA...

In a summer that seems to be lacking in truly great, original comedies, Let’s Be Cops certainly has the potential to break the mould and offer something a little different. With a host of great weapons in its arsenal, including two rising stars in Damon Wayans, Jr. and Jake Johnson, we also see them joined by the talented leading lady Nina Dobrev, and a revered Andy Garcia as the film’s chief antagonist. The premise itself is the stuff of comedy gold – two ne’er-do-wells from Los Angeles dress up like cops and use the power that comes along with the position to do everything from smoking marijuana in public, getting into trendy night clubs, and turn the tables on those who’ve wronged them in the past. But halfway through this film, it simply becomes all too familiar.

One of Comic-Con's worst-kept secrets was confirmed by Comic-Con International today. Daniel Radcliffe, who never made it to San Diego during his "Harry Potter" years, will finally visit the pop culture fest in conjunction with a panel for the new indie comedy "Horns." That's big news in and of itself, but besides a massive two-hour presentation from 20th Century Fox, Friday is going to be pretty weak on the movie side. Most of the excitement Friday will actually come from the "Game of Thrones" and "Walking Dead" panels that are part of the Hall H mix. That being said, here's a rundown of Comic-Con's Friday offerings. "Horns" and "Everly" When: 3:00-4:00 Pm Where: Hall H Who: Radcliffe, Hayek Lowdown: Radius-twc will bring "Horns" with Radcliffe, Juno Temple, director Alexandre Aja and novelist Joe Hill. The show has had its ups and downs so far, but with its seventh episode Fargo is suddenly a series worth celebrating as a standalone entity. With “Who Shaves the Barber?” I finally forgot about all the Coen brothers blood that was pumping life into the heart of the show from the beginning. This was the best episode since the pilot, and in some ways it was even better because it didn’t rest on all that pastiche and influence. It’s a shame that we only have three more installments to go, as now I could see it actually continuing beyond its predetermined ten parts. That’s a big change of my mind from a few episodes ago when I wondered how series writer Noah Hawley was going to stretch out the show’s two main storylines for the whole series. But now we have the introduction of comedic duo Key & Peele — sorry, that...
