Producers of Dancing with the Stars are opening up about controversial casting decisions over the years, like Sean Spicer (Season 28), Carole Baskin (Season 29), and Adrian Peterson (Season 32), among many more.
Speaking to reporters at the Television Critics Association winter press tour on Saturday, EP Deena Katz said “clickbait” casting is something that has to be done.
“Unfortunately, in this day and age, have to do a little bit of that clickbait wow that gets people there,” Katz said. “But the hope is that all of us are great storytellers. And at the end of the day, we’re all telling really great stories in all different ways on this panel.”
Katz noted that during casting of the reality competition, “it’s really important every single season to bring new people in that audience members may not know.”

The producers of “Dancing With the Stars” are responding to the controversial casting of Sean Spicer (Season 28) and Adrian Peterson (Season 32), among others.
“We’re a silly ballroom dance show, we’re teaching people how to cha cha. The country is divided, so half of the people may have one political view and the other half have the other. At the core of it, we always just go for nice, good people,” executive producer Deena Katz told Variety following ABC’s unscripted panel at the Television Critics Association press tour on Saturday.
Katz added that former White House press secretary Spicer became friends with many members of the cast during his time on the show. However, there was a great deal of controversy amid his casting, with former host Tom Bergeron among those expressing disappointment over how the show was being politicized.
“I think everyone needs to, for the two hours you’re watching,...

“Dancing with the Stars” underwent a couple of big changes going into its 32nd season in 2023. After streaming exclusively on Disney+, the show returned to its original home on ABC (though still simulcast on the streaming service). This was also the first season of the show since the death of beloved head judge Len Goodman, though the show’s grand prize was renamed in his honor: it’s now the Len Goodman Mirror Ball Trophy. So who was sent home from the competition when and for which dances? Below, see the complete results of “DWTS” season 32, updated every week as additional couples are sent home.

Sharna Burgess‘ absence from Dancing With the Stars‘ Len Goodman tribute was a grave oversight that her “family in the ballroom” should have spoken up about, her fianceé and former DWTS partner Brian Austin Green said Wednesday on social media.
“I can’t begin to tell you how disappointed I was for @SharnaBurgess to not be invited for the tribute last night,” Green posted on Instagram. “It’s disappointing as well that note of her ‘family in the ballroom’ stuck up for her or spoke out. She’s an incredible soul and has always been a friend to everyone. She deserved better.

A week after NFL athlete Adrian Peterson was eliminated from “Dancing with the Stars” following his strongest performance on the show, Oscar winning actress Mira Sorvino had her highest-scoring routine on “Most Memorable Year Night” only to be sent home from the competition early. What did you think of the contemporary routine that landed her in 10th place? Watch it above, and vote in our polls at the bottom of this post.
Sorvino’s routine was especially moving for her because it referenced her film “Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion” and also featured her own daughter along with pro partner Gleb Savchenko. The judges appreciated the joyfulness of the performance. They thought it was uplifting and heartfelt. Though Bruno Tonioli critiqued that she needed to engage her core more during lifts. She ended up scoring sevens from Tonioli and Carrie Ann Inaba and her first ever eight from Derek Hough.

[Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for Dancing with the Stars] The 10 couples left on Dancing with the Stars took a dance down memory lane for Monday’s “Most Memorable Year” show. For the occasion, the celebs and their partners performed routines inspired by a pivotal time in their lives. NFL great Adrian Peterson and pro Britt Stewart’s straight 7 scores were not enough to keep them safe last week. This further cemented how important viewership voting was to keeping duos alive. Outside the competition, DWTS formally paid tribute to Len Goodman with a special waltz choreographed by Val Chmerkovskiy and Jenna Johnson Chmerkovskiy to the sounds of Henry Mancini’s “Moon River.” Current pros, as well as Derek and Julianne Hough, joined returning faces to honor the late lead judge. Among them Val’s brother Maksim Chmerkovskiy, Kym Johnson-Herjavec, Tony Dovolani, Anna Trebunskaya, Edyta Śliwińska, Karina Smirnoff, Louis van Amstel, and Mark Ballas. But there was no sign ...

NFL football star Adrian Peterson was a controversial contestant on “Dancing with the Stars” to say the least due to allegations of child abuse and domestic violence. Thus, many fans online celebrated his elimination on “Disney100 Night.” But we got different results when we polled fans of “DWTS” after last week’s results. When we asked who should have been eliminated from the competition, 21.92% voted for Peterson. That means more than 78% of respondents would have eliminated someone else. Scroll down for our surprising poll results.
The vast majority of fans were split between five contestants. Getting the most votes (29.08%) was “Real Housewives” star and real estate agent Mauricio Umansky. He landed in the bottom two on “Premiere Night,” so it didn’t seem like he would last long in the competition, but he has been safe from elimination ever since. On “Disney100 Night” he performed a paso doble, a difficult...

Tonight is the “Dancing with the Stars” theme night most inclined to elicit tears from the contestants and audience alike. “Most Memorable Year” will feature dances inspired by a life-changing year in each celebrity’s life. But whose journey will come to an end at the end of the evening? “DWTS” fans have been placing their bets here in our predictions center for the past week. You can still make or update your own forecasts before tonight’s show.
It looks like it might be bad news for “Brady Bunch” star Barry Williams. As of this writing he gets leading odds of 19/10 of being eliminated from the competition. He was one of the three celebrities in jeopardy last week when the final results were announced along with Lele Pons and Adrian Peterson. That doesn’t necessarily mean Williams was actually in the bottom three, though. Peterson was eliminated, so all...

At the end of “Disney100 Night” on “Dancing with the Stars,” the three celebs in jeopardy — though not necessarily the actual bottom three — were Lele Pons, Barry Williams and Adrian Peterson, with Peterson ultimately eliminated based on the combination of judges’ scores and viewer votes. “I figured he wasn’t going to last,” says Gold Derby contributor Cordell Martin. But the fact that the show has stopped announcing the real bottom two is getting annoying. Watch my slugfest with Martin and fellow contributor Jeffrey Kare above.
“I think the approach that they’ve had the last two weeks has kind of thrown off the typical way we’re used to seeing the results,” Martin explains. “So maybe they wanted to switch it up just so people won’t feel like, ‘Oh, my gosh, America must think I suck'” if they’re consistently revealed to be in the bottom two. “On the flip side,...

It was an up and down few weeks on “Dancing with the Stars” for NFL athlete Adrian Peterson, culminating in his elimination at the end of “Disney100 Night” in week four. Did he really deserve to be eliminated for the Viennese waltz he performed inspired by the movie “Dumbo”? Watch the routine above, and vote in our poll at the bottom of this post.
His “Premiere Night” dance got mixed reviews and a score of 18 out of 30. That actually placed him pretty high on the judges’ leaderboard, and he was ultimately safe from elimination. “Latin Night” was a step back for him. He scored 15 out of 30 and was second to last on the leaderboard. This time he was in the bottom two when viewer votes were added in, but Jamie Lynn Spears was sent home instead. “Motown Night” was a slight step up from there, but he was still struggling with technique.

On past “Disney” nights on Dancing with the Stars, producers have opted to skip eliminating anyone from the competition because why eliminate anyone on such a magical evening? Alas, that wasn’t the case this year. Even though they weren’t the lowest scoring duo of the night, NFL running back Adrian Peterson and pro partner Britt Stewart were sent home after earning 21 points for doing a Viennese Waltz to Baby Mine from Dumbo. Two other couples were in jeopardy — Barry Williams (The Brady Bunch) and Peta Murgatroyd, who earned 18 points after making a misstep during their jazz, and, surprisingly, YouTuber Lele Pons and Brandon Armstrong, who scored 22 points for their Rumba. Two out of the last three couples not called safe aren’t necessarily in the bottom two, but they don’t know for certain whether they are or not. “It’s never, ever easy to be in that position,...

For a minute, I wasn’t sure if the latest episode of Dancing with the Stars was a tribute to Hyundai’s Ioniq 5 or a celebration of Disney’s 100th. Looks it was a whole lot of both! Ah, the magic of product placement.

“Too Hot to Handle” star Harry Jowsey had a bit of a scare on “Dancing with the Stars” last week on “Motown Night.” Despite showing signs of improvement and slightly inching his way up the leaderboard, he was announced to be in jeopardy at the end of the night along with model Tyson Beckford and actress Alyson Hannigan. Luckily for him, Beckford was eliminated instead. But might Jowsey be on the chopping block again tonight on “Disney100 Night“? And was he really even in the bottom three to begin with?

It’s that time of the year again: Disney synergy on “Dancing with the Stars.” The top 11 couples will perform to tunes from Disney films on Tuesday’s Disney100 Night. Good news from the ratings people: ABC says the season 32 premiere of Dancing With The Stars held even with the series’ prior season on the network in fall 2021, when it averaged 6.50 million viewers. That means the people who used to love their favorite fringe show before it moved to Disney+ for Season 31 came back to re-enjoy their favorite fringe show!
This isn’t the worst news. Though DWTS remains a loss leader, it’s a loss leader we all need — more than we truly can appreciate these days. What was it that they sang at the beginning of tonight’s episode? It’s just an invitation across the nation, a chance for folks to meet. There’ll be laughing, singing and music swinging, dancing in the street!
Time to kick off Motown Night with guest host Michael Strahan, who’s really not that bad with the superlatives when it comes to judging the celebrity hoofers.

This article contains spoilers for the Oct. 10 episode of “Dancing With the Stars.”
Singer Jason Mraz who was tied at the top of the leaderboard last week, earned the first “9”s of the season on Tuesday night’s “Dancing With the Stars.” Later in the show, “Vanderpump Rules” star Ariana Madix, who danced in flats due to a possible unrevealed injury, was shocked to also be given two “9”s and two “8” scores.
Mraz and partner Daniella Karagach shook it up for Motown Night with a spirited Jive to “Do You Love Me” by The Contours. Carrie Ann Inaba called it “brilliant,” while Derek Hough raved that Mraz made the dance look “effortless.” Tonioli gushed that it was “like watching a scene from a movie.”
Motown Night saw extra points for everyone as “The $100,000 Pyramid” host Michael Strahan joined as a guest judge.

Week three of “Dancing with the Stars” brought “Motown Night,” in which the celebrities performed new dance styles — mostly foxtrots — to songs like “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell, “You Can’t Hurry Love” by The Supremes and “I Want You Back” by The Jackson 5. So who busted a move, and whose moves were busted? Follow along below with our live blog for all the minute-by-minute developments and commentary as the night progresses.

It’s been an interesting couple of weeks for real estate agent and “Real Housewives” personality Mauricio Umansky on “Dancing with the Stars.” But he has survived into week three, and tonight he and the other 11 remaining celebrities will dance to the music of Motown. Will he continue to have the support of viewers at home, or will they leave him hanging?
SEEGet ready for a ton of foxtrots on Motown Night on ‘Dancing with the Stars’
Umansky scored 15 out of 30 on “Premiere Night,” not the worst score of the evening, but he still landed in the bottom two, indicating that he came up short in viewer votes. Comedian and actor Matt Walsh was eliminated instead, though. Then on “Latin Night” Umansky struggled mightily through his choreography and scored 12 out of 30. That did leave him at the bottom of the judges’ leaderboard, but this time viewer votes kept him out of the bottom two.

It’s Motown Night on “Dancing with the Stars” this week and nothing says “Motown” more than… Michael Strahan. The “Good Morning America” co-anchor will guest-judge the remaining 12 couples’ routines to soul hits.
Prepare yourself for a whole lotta foxtrots. Half of the dances are foxtrots and the other six are two quicksteps, one cha-cha, one tango, one rumba and one jive. Jason Mraz and Daniella Karagach have the jive, marking the second consecutive week they are the only couple assigned a particular dance style (last week was rumba). Tptb are really testing out his extra vertebrae, huh?
After sitting out last week due to Covid-19, Artem Chigvintsev is back in the ballroom this week with Charity Lawson.

“Latin Night” on “Dancing with the Stars” had a surprise ending. Jamie Lynn Spears was eliminated from the competition despite having decent judges’ scores. Did she and her pro partner Alan Bersten really deserve to be sent home after their “Latin Night” cha cha? See what the judges had to say and watch their routine below.
Carrie Ann Inaba: “Love seeing you having fun. I can tell you’re enjoying yourself. We lost a step in the middle just a little bit, but what was missing for me was a little bit more of an elongation of your torso. I feel like thinking of it as lifting as opposed to pressing down into it because you’re very strong. So try to allow a little air to flow.”
Derek Hough: “I beg to differ. I think softball moms are hot. That said, there was a little timing issue.

“Dancing With the Stars” kicked off Latin night on Tuesday in week 2 of the season 32 competition, and the 13 stars still standing — along with their pro partners — brought their very best to the ballroom.
The second week of competition proved to be a particular challenge for the couples, with a focus on Latin routines that required a bit more style, speed and physicality. As always, some celebs shined bright as standout talents, while others stumbled hard.
After two hours of passionate and greatly improved dances, it was up to America to vote on who deserved to perform once more next week, and whose time was already up.
In the end — through a combination of judges scores and audience votes — two couples were determined to be in jeopardy: Jamie Lynn Spears and Alan Bersten, as well as Adrian Peterson and Britt Stewart.

The reality star spoke with Et on Tuesday after dancing his heart out on ‘DWTS’ Latin Night.
Mauricio Umansky isn’t ready to let his marriage to Kyle Richards go without trying to make things work — and he’s putting in the effort while also trying to stay in the competition on this season of Dancing With the Stars.
The reality star danced his heart out on Tuesday’s Dancing With the Stars, alongside pro partner Emma Slater. However, a mistake made during the performance subsequently lead to the pair earning the night’s lowest scores. However, they still managed to avoid getting ousted.
“It feels amazing to be safe,” Umansky told Et’s Deidre Behar backstage after the episode. “I feel blessed, I feel lucky. I thank my fans.”

This article contains spoilers for the Oct. 3 episode of “Dancing With the Stars.”
Latin Night saw a lot of missteps on “Dancing With the Stars,” but also some very sexy Sambas, Salsas and Rumbas. Actress Xochitl Gomez and singer Jason Mraz tied at the top of the leaderboard with 24 points each.
Marvel star Xochitl joked that with a name like hers, people would expect she was “born knowing how to Salsa,” but that it wasn’t true. “Salsa is your superpower,” said judge Carrie Ann Inaba, who compared her to Egot singer, actress and dancer Rita Moreno. Derek Gough gushed, “Your spins are out of control,” calling her performance “exceptional,” while Bruno Tonioli proclaimed it “superb.”
Singer Jason Mraz, a surprise breakout dance star in Week 1, had the last dance of the evening, a romantic Rumba with Daniella Karagach. Derek raved, “You nailed it.”

Just when you thought the pandemic had stopped kicking at the shins of Dancing with the Stars, then comes news that — argh! — it’s not over yet. Poor Artem Chigvintsev has Covid! Now his Bachelorette partner Charity Lawson has to dance with Ezra Sosa, a lucky member of the background troupe who now gets his 15 minutes under the mirror ball. It shouldn’t hurt Lawson’s standing; she was the only quasi-ringer to emerge from the premiere night performances.
Notice how I said quasi. That’s right, DWTS watchers: unlike previous seasons, this batch of hoofers didn’t come armed with a decade of dance lessons or a previous life as a TikTok dance star. This season is chock full of straight-up amateurs, people! Finally, some perfectly passable dancing that makes us all warm and fuzzy about the golden days of DWTS.
Enough with the reminiscing. Bring on Latin night!

Who really gave the best performance on “Dancing with the Stars” during “Premiere Night“? We asked fans to respond in our poll at the end of the show, and they were divided pretty evenly three ways. Overall, they agreed with judges Derek Hough, Bruno Tonioli and Carrie Ann Inaba about the top three performances, but disagreed about the order. Scroll down to see our complete poll results.
The best performance of the night according to the judges with a total score of 22 out of 30 was “The Bachelorette” star Charity Lawson, who danced a tango. Tied for second place with sevens across the board from the judges for a total of 21 out of 30 were “Vaanderpump Rules” reality star Ariana Madix dancing another tango and Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Jason Mraz with a cha cha.

“Dancing With the Stars” Season 32 kicked off right on schedule on Tuesday night, with all 15 couples, even temporary holdout actor Matt Walsh, hitting the dance floor for the first time.
“Bachelorette” star Charity Lawson and partner Artem Chigvintsev earned the highest score of the evening for their Tango, which judge Bruno Tonioli proclaimed to be “exquisite,” while Carrie Ann Inaba said it was “stunning,” especially for Week 1.
Charity took the lead from singer Jason Mraz, whose Cha-Cha-Cha with Daniella Karagacha to his own song, “I Feel Like Dancing,” prompted Bruno to dub him “the one to watch.” Jason, who claimed his higher-than-average dancing skills were due to an “extra vertebra,” earned a “7” from each judge.
After the audience votes were added, “Rhobh” star Mauricio Umansky and “Veep” star Matt Walsh were in the bottom two. Matt’s “non-traditional” Cha-Cha-Cha with partner Koko Iwasaki received a “4,” from each judge, a decision the audience booed.

“Dancing with the Stars” is back on ABC and some things just stay the same: if a celebrity has a song or is associated with a song, they will likely perform to it for their first dance.
ABC has unveiled the 14 dance styles and songs for Tuesday’s Season 32 premiere, and would you be shocked to learn that Jason Mraz is dancing the cha-cha to one of his own songs? And that the song is “I Feel Like Dancing”? Similarly, Barry Williams will perform a foxtrot to “It’s a Sunshine Day” by The Brady Bunch. Gotta get these outta the way. Mraz is one of six stars who will make their “Dancing” debut with the cha-cha. Williams, however, is the only one doing the foxtrot. Four couples have the tango, Two have the salsa and one has the jive.

With just days to go before Dancing With the Stars kicks off season 32, one celebrity contestant has paused their involvement in the series. However, this exit has nothing to do with their ability to dance.
Which celebrity paused their appearance on season 32 of ‘Dancing With the Stars?’
Matt Walsh, two-time Emmy nominee for Veep, took a step back from competing on Dancing With the Stars. He paused his appearance on the show to support the striking Sa-/AFTRA writers.
