It was 20 years ago today.
No, it’s nothing about “Sgt. Pepper”, but rather two decades exactly since Lucas, A.J, Cory and the gang banded together to save Empire Records.
For those unfamiliar, “The Empire” was one of the last great vestiges of independent music ownership and the scene of one of the great cult classics of the 1990s. The unfamiliar can be excused, however, since the film was, by and large, a failure. It grossed just over $300,000 in the States and was gone from theatres just two weeks after its late 1995 release. So, why the fuss?
It gained popularity with a certain age group – pretty much anyone currently in their 30s – thanks to early performances from some would be stars (Liv Tyler and Renee Zellweger most notably) and its all-timer of a soundtrack.
But why celebrate 20 years of the cult classic in April instead of on its Sept.

"Saturday Night Live" is set to return from its current hiatus on March 28 with Dwayne Johnson hosting for the fourth time. To be more specific, Johnson has hosted "Saturday Night Live" twice as The Rock and once as Dwayne Johnson, most recently in 2009, when he introduced the world to The Rock Obama. Joining the "San Andreas" and "Furious 7" star is musical guest George Ezra, the first time "SNL" has featured an "Ezra" as host or musical guest, in case you were wondering if Better Than Ezra ever stopped by. They did not.

"Why is there a soundtrack for everything except the show with music in every single second of it?" So asked "Arrested Development" creator Mitch Hurwitz when he introduced the Arrested Development Band for their record release party in Hollywood last night. Celebrating the release of "At Long Last... Music and Songs from Arrested Development," a 42-song soundtrack from the recently resurrected television show, the party at The Record Parlour put the eclectic group of musicians who churned out more than 80 songs for the beloved comedy front and center. Featuring musicians Louis Price, Gabriel Mann, Steve Mazur (Our Lady Peace), Lucy Schwartz and Michael Jerome (Better Than Ezra), the Arrested Development Band was helmed by the man of the hour, David Schwartz, who served as the soundtrack's composer and bass guitarist. Hurwitz had plenty of praise for Schwartz, calling his work ethic "prolific." "It's hard to express how quickly he did that music consistently,...

If there are any filmmakers who’ve worked their way through record stores as much as folks like Quentin Tarantino or even Wes Anderson, it would have to be John Hughes and Allan Moyle. So perhaps it’s no real surprise that on annual Record Store Day, where you can come out and support your local independent record stores on April 21st this year, there will be soundtrack reissues from both filmmakers.
First is Hughes’ “The Breakfast Club,” which will surely find many record enthusiasts doing some Judd Hirsch-style fist pumping as they pick up their all-white 12-inch vinyl pressing of the album. It’s hard to capture an entire mood of a film with a single soundtrack, especially when that film lingers on a dreary Saturday spent in detention with a few high school students looking to find themselves like in “The Breakfast Club,” but between the seminal...

David Cook is not a morning person.
Throughout his new album, This Loud Morning, available everywhere June 28, there are numerous references to falling skies, suns and stars. The "night keeps calling" him. On the nearly six-minute closer "Rapid Eye Movement," he hoarsely sings his desire to "kill the blinding lights of day."
Who could blame him for wanting to escape reality? In the year that preceded the studio sessions for This Loud Morning, Cook experienced new highs of a successful post-"American Idol" world tour and crushing lows after losing older brother Adam to cancer. Happy Mardi Gras, everybody! Though it falls a little later on the calendar this year, that just means that revelers are slightly more well-rested for the partying, fun and debauchery that will be unfolding today and all week in New Orleans. As is typical of most celebrations this season, the weather won't be playing nice with anybody (most of Louisiana will be under a blanket of severe thunderstorms today and tomorrow), but that shouldn't stop people from raising their glasses and flashing their naughty bits at total strangers.
In order to put yourself in a proper Mardi Gras mindset, take a spin through the video playlist below. It's a six pack of killer tracks, including Better Than Ezra's "King of New Orleans" (as thrilling a bayou anthem as there is on the rock scene), Miley Cyrus' "Party in the U.S.A." It's always a bit of a bummer for kids whose birthdays are so close to Christmas. They always get somewhat shafted on gifts growing up, right? But that probably hasn't mattered in a few years for David Cook, who turns 28 years old today. The man who won the seventh season of "American Idol" (arguably the show's second or third best season ever) has two albums, a bunch of singles and a number of dream collaborations under his belt, and you can be certain he is celebrating this holiday season.
Cook grew up in Missouri and started playing guitar at age 12. He famously had no intentions of auditioning for "American Idol" (he was only going to the auditions as support for his brother (who ironically was not given a pass to the Hollywood round). He was something of a quiet underdog in the beginning, but he slowly began to amass a number of excellent,...

After a year as impressive as 2009, Taylor Swift followed suit in 2010. She toured the world, released a chart-topping album and even starred in her first feature film. Swift kicked off the year winning awards and ended it dominating the charts, and in between, she never looked back.
(They're more than just pretty faces, but you can still check out photos of our Men and Women of 2010!)
Swift proved that she was more than just a crossover coincidence thanks to catchy songs and girl-next-door charm that appeals to the masses. She managed to scoop up awards and be surprised by each win. The other shoe isn't going to drop anytime soon, and 2010 proved that.

We sure love when a reality show winner falls flat on their face here at The Dish Rag, but we also have to give props when one of them graduates on to bigger things. We've been keeping an eye on CariDee English since her win on Cycle 7's "America's Next Top Model," because we liked her so much.
She's on a whole new journey now as she works on her first album with members from the alt-rock band, Better Than Ezra. She announced she was going into the studio last year and from following her on Twitter, it's clear she's giving it everything she has got.
Listen to her take on Tom Petty's "Free Falling" and let us know what you think. Don't be shy! She wants to hear from you.
"Judge me," English says during the performance. "I've been on reality television."

Here's a fact that might not be shocking to close observers of the MTV Newsroom Blog: I have something of a fixation with the music of the 1990s. And I have a particular obsession with the soundtracks of that era, partially because I think the movies are interesting and partially because those soundtracks usually act as delightful little time capsules that express exactly where the zeitgeist was at the time (down to the month, usually). Plus, music was all over the place then, so the beginnings of nu-metal lived next to hippie dippie rock, post-grunge, post-riot grrrl, industrial, dance music and most everything in between (this was especially true of the late '90s — pre-millennium tension did strange things to people.
With that in mind, I got really excited when I came across Buzzfeed's list of the top 13 '90s soundtracks posted today. They touched on many of the best,...

Happy Mardi Gras, everybody! Today marks the actual date on the calendar when New Orleans dedicates itself to throwing a gigantic party, with parades, public nudity, masks, beads and lots of drinking. The wonderful scene on Bourbon Street is a fantastic combination of tradition and modern debauchery, and when you compound the fact that the New Orleans Saints just won the Super Bowl and that we're coming off a three-day holiday weekend, the party should be extra energized.
Like any great party, it will require a killer soundtrack. That's why the MTV Newsroom is proud to present the official Mardi Gras video playlist, which features the likes of Lil Wayne (New Orleans' favorite son), Ludacris (who is from Atlanta but sums up the spirit of Mardi Gras with "One More Drink"), Miley Cyrus (who is always looking for a good "Party in the U.S.A."), Jon Bon Jovi (who...

Though many football fans were skeptical, the New Orleans Saints and the Indianapolis Colts managed to turn in an extremely memorable Super Bowl on Sunday night (February 7), with the Saints prevailing by a score of 31-17. New Orleans, a weighted underdog coming into the match-up in Miami, trailed for a bulk of the game and saw their normally potent offense stifled by the Colts early on. But a few key plays (including a gutsy on-sides kick and an acrobatic two-point conversion care of Tk that shifted the momentum heavily in the Saints favor) allowed New Orleans to pull away and ascend to championship status in their very first Super Bowl.
Though the biggest play in the game came courtesy of defensive back Tracy Porter (who intercepted a Peyton Manning pass and took it to the end zone for a score that put the game away for the Saints), quarterback Drew Brees...

The "Hope for Haiti Now: A Global Benefit for Earthquake Relief" telethon is underway, and a number of stars and performers have taken the stage. "Hope for Haiti" benefit concert has been kicked off. Madonna performed from the New York City studio, singing "Like a Prayer" with a choir backing her up, while Taylor Swift strummed her guitar, playing Better Than Ezra's "Breathless".
Prior to their performances, Alicia Keys opened the telecast, sitting behind a grand piano and singing her song "Prelude to a Kiss". George Clooney then appeared, explaining why this benefit is so important while the camera shoots the bank of all-star phone operations.
Coldplay was the next performers. They sang a rendition of "A Message" from London. Bruce Springsteen then followed it with an acoustic version of "We Shall Overcome", calling it as "a small prayer for Haiti." Afterwards, Stevie Wonder performed "A Time to Love" and "Bridge Over Troubled Water" with a choir.

While earthquake relief in Haiti was the reason for and inspiration behind "Hope for Haiti Now: A Global Benefit for Earthquake Relief," there's no question that it featured some amazing, one-of-a-kind musical performances.
The songs chosen by most of the artists had a thematic connection to the occasion, and the soaring lyrics delivered by the likes of Bruce Springsteen, Mary J. Blige and Justin Timberlake underlined the hope for the country that's coming from around the world. The songs' unplugged, often gentle renditions underscored the seriousness of the situation.
George Clooney helped organize the event, and his hope is that the songs carry the event beyond the evening and into the following weeks, months and years.

"Tom, he plays bass guitar, he's doing a separate project, and he asked me to be the singer for it," she explained. The '90s were a great time to be in a band, especially in the post-grunge era. Since it took the rock world so long to figure out what to do with itself following the death of Kurt Cobain, just about anybody could get song on the radio with a slightly crunchy guitar riff and an earnest chorus. That's not to say that everything was hacky; in fact, some of the stuff that came from that era was great. One of those great things? Better Than Ezra, who first broke big with the single "Good," which owned modern rock radio in the summer of 1995. The band's videos also dominated MTV, especially "In the Blood" and "Desperately Wanting," that latter of which came from the group's 1996 record Friction, Baby.

Kevin Griffin made a name for himself in the '90s with Better Than Ezra, but these days, when he's not busy working with the band and releasing new music, he's writing with some of the biggest names from "American Idol."
He's worked with everyone from Jason Castro to David Cook and David Archuleta, and this time around, he's written some songs for Kris Allen and Adam Lambert for their top-secret, highly anticipated debuts, both out this fall. He's hoping the songs he submitted for Lambert make the final cut.
"As a songwriter, you want to get on the projects that are high-profile but you hope are going to be successful," he said about collaborating with "Idol" alumni. "And certainly, the 'Idol' things are successful.

Our pal Christopher Campbell has put together a pretty cool top ten list over at Spout Blog. Inspired by the frenzy surrounding Paramore, who has been fortunate enough to land two songs on the Twilight soundtrack, he's put together a list of one hit wonders made by the movies. As memorable (and impossible to eradicate from easy listening stations) as Lookin' For Love, King of Wishful Thinking, and Stay (I Missed You) are, they're really just that one song from that one movie -- you know the one ... yeah, that movie! (By the way, the above three are from Urban Cowboy, Pretty Woman, and Reality Bites, respectively.)
The best thing about these lists is the debate they inspire. I disagree that Chris Isaak's Wicked Game fits the mold, as I think it's associated less with Wild at Heart than with a sandy and sexy Helena Christensen. In coming up with nominations of our own,...
