Team USA Torches Czech Republic With Dominant Performance By Kevin Durant, Advances To Quarterfinals
Team USA has finally gotten their mojo back.
Since their disappointing loss to France on July 25, Coach Gregg Popovich and the American men’s basketball team now have back-to-back blowouts under their belt.
In a masterclass performance, Kevin Durant dropped 23 points, 6 assists, 8 rebounds and 1 block on the Olympic stage in the game against the Czech Republic. Jayson Tatum also put on a shooting clinic, tacking on 27 points on 10-for-16 shooting. Though close after the first half, Team USA went on to blow out the Czech team 119-84.
“I’ve had a lot asked of me every team I’ve been on since I was eight years old. It’s no different here,” Durant said. “But I feel I have to available to do every single thing out on the court…I’ve worked to be at that point and it’s fun.”

Team USA basketball is used to rolling out the balls and taking home a victory in its Olympics games. The team was 39-0 in its last three Olympic seasons, including exhibitions.
Make that 39-1 after Saturday night. That’s when upstart Team Nigeria smacked a US team led by all-world forward Kevin Durant by the score of 90-87. It was only an exhibition game, but it sends a message that Olympics gold is not guaranteed for a US squad led by some of the NBA’s greats.
Team USA had to feel confident heading into the game. The US has beaten Nigeria by 127 points in its last two meetings, one at the 2012 London Olympics, the other a warm-up exhibition for the 2016 Rio games.
But the Nigerian team, made up mostly of fringe NBA players with a few college stars, wasn’t having it.

Bipartisanship in Washington is in short supply these days, but there is one roiling issue around which Democrats and Republicans are united: Hong Kong. Since demonstrations against China’s authoritarian control of the territory began this summer, top lawmakers from both parties have rallied in support of the protesters. Last week, as pro-democracy activists who barricaded themselves inside Hong Kong Polytechnic University squared off with police, Congress nearly unanimously declared official U.S. support for the moment. The Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act passed through the Senate on Tuesday...

The National Basketball Association continued to dig deeper into a public relations hole today, as an executive shut down a question from a CNN anchor on the league’s China problem.
CNN’s Christina Macfarlane was cut off at a Japan press conference after an exhibition game between the Houston Rockets and Toronto Raptors. The Rockets have been at the center of a dispute that started when one of its executives, general manager Daryl Morey, tweeted support for the pro-democracy demonstrations in Hong Kong.
Macfarlane attempted to ask Rockets stars James Harden and Russell Westbrook whether they would feel comfortable speaking out on political and social issues in the future after the uproar from China in reaction to Morey and the events of this week. The unidentified Rockets media relations person stopped them from answering – even though Harden appeared ready to respond – saying that “basketball questions only” were the only permissible path.
