Back in 2010, legendary producer Roger Corman and his wife/producing partner Julie Corman teamed up with the late director Declan O’Brien – who is best known for making several of the Wrong Turn sequels – to bring the world the creature feature Sharktopus, which is about exactly what it sounds like it would be about. A shark/octopus hybrid that goes on a man-eating binge. That film received two sequels, Sharktopus vs. Pteracuda and Sharktopus vs. Whalewolf… and now it has been given the remake treatment. In China! A trailer for the Chinese remake of Sharktopus can be seen in the embed above.
Scripted by Mike MacLean and Stephen Niver, the original Sharktopus had the following synopsis: Aiming to create the U.S. Navy’s next hyper-weapon while fiddling with shark and octopus DNA, the visionary geneticist, Nathan Sands, comes up with a nightmarish prototype: the genetically enhanced “S-11” hybrid. However, after a...

In my review of Mega Shark vs. Crocosaurous (Feb. 23 of this year), I suggested the folks in charge of The Asylum watch some of Roger Corman's older films and take a few notes on how to make a great monster flick. I hope they had pen and paper handy when Sharktopus hit the Syfy Network, as their chief competition just showed them how it's done. A gleeful mix of one part monster, one part bathing suit clad victims, and a lot of "how can we top the last scene" effort shaken into the mix, the film became one of Syfy's biggest successes. All I can say is, I told you so, The Asylum.
The film opens in California, with a young swimmer about to become a white shark snack.

A genetically mutated cross between a shark and an octopus, that was meant for military purposes, starts to run amok killing random vacationers.
A throwback to all those cheesy monster movies that Roger Corman used to make back in the day. While this one is nowhere near as fun as those movies, it certainly is watchable and has its moments. It doesn't have quite the energy or the conviction of those earlier films in their outrageous premises. The overall camp factor could have been amped up a bit more. The violence and the situations that unfold could have been a bit more cheeky and spirited in their overall approach. And the cast, with the exception of Eric Roberts, could have been more awful in their delivery or more in tune with what...

Why can’t people make decent monster movies? I’m a huge monster movie fan. From classics such as Godzilla (1954), Mothra (1962) and Gamera to more recent films such as Cloverfield (2008) and Host (2006), I love anything that has a giant monster destroying things.
They might not have the best effects, but they have a certain wonder and charm that entertains me no matter how bad they are (Terror of Mechagodzilla (1975) is a great example of this).
However, there has been a recent trend towards making really cheap monster movies with ridiculous titles that are high on digital effects and low on pretty much everything else.
I first encountered this phenomenon when viewing Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus (2009); I was expecting to get some tongue-in-cheek laughs from a silly film, but instead got a terrible film that actually appeared to be taking itself seriously.
The subsequent, emergent trend would lead me down a dark path of disappointment,...

Director: Declan O’Brien. Review: Adam Wing. Contrary to popular belief, very few sharks are dangerous to humans. Out of more than 360 species, only four have been involved in a significant number of fatal, unprovoked attacks. An octopus has three hearts, eight arms (generally), likes to hide and doesn’t get a whole lot of sex. Probably because the male dies a few months after reproduction and the female kicks it as soon as the eggs are hatched - that would really put me off too, come to think of it. They’re intelligent though, incredibly flexible and have a great sense of touch. Which brings us neatly to the most fearsome creature of the deep, the once fabled half-shark, half-octopus - created for the military by a team of highly intelligent, not to mention incredibly stupid, scientist types. Not much is known of the sharktopus, apart from his obvious...

It's a very mixed bag this week for horror title releases. We're not sure how Dread-worthy the supernatural drama Hereafter (directed by Clint Eastwood and starring Matt Damon, Bryce Dallas Howard and Jay Mohr) is but have included it because of its afterlife aspects.
On the list you'll also find a couple of schlocky monster movies, one a double-feature of classic Gamera entries and the other from the Syfy channel featuring Sharktopus (a sea creature that is both a shark and an octopus) with an over-acting Eric Roberts. In addition Syfy is releasing its mockbuster Battle of Los Angeles to take advantage of the current Aliens-Invading-Los-Angeles craze.
Hereafter
Directed by Clint Eastwood
Starring Matt Damon, Bryce Dallas Howard, Jay Mohr, Cécile de France, Frankie McLaren, George McLaren
George is a blue-collar American with a special connection to the afterlife dating from his childhood. French journalist Marie has a near-death experience that shakes her reality.

Naval scientist Nathan Rand (Roberts) and his brain-box daughter Nicole (Lane), have developed a hybrid half-shark/half-octopus (Why? That’s a question that’s never answered – most likely because the name sounds cool) for use by the Us military. However when the control system malfunctions and the “sharktopus” escapes during a training session, Rand, his daughter and their hired help – Flynn, a world-renowned former shark hunter no less (obviously) – must head off the popular tourist resort of Puerto Vallarta in Mexico to track down the man-hungry mutant killer before it causes havoc and starts to eat both the locals and holidaymakers. However Rand and co. are not the only ones after the beast – also hot on its tail are a scoop-hungry news reporter and her cameraman, and an obnoxious pirate...

I'm finding it very difficult to embrace Syfy's new range of low-budget TV horror movies, particularly the ridiculous water-based flicks such as 'Mega Piranha' or 'Dinoshark'. Well producer Roger Corman will see his latest mini-budget horror sci-fi movie 'Sharktopus' (yes the story of a Shark and Octopus hybrid killing machine) hit DVD and Blu-ray this March and a new trailer to help early promotions has been revealed. I'm not particularly a fan of the b-movie-esque attempts by Syfy of late. They look cheap and nasty and don't have any of the qualities true b-movies had from years back. I don't know, maybe it's an age thing. Anyhoo, the latest Roger Corman produced hybrid fest is 'Sharktopus'. It hit our TV screens a little while back and now its hitting DVD and Blu-Ray on 15 March 2011. Eric Roberts ('The Dark Knight', 'The Expendables'), Hector Jimenez, Ralph Garman, Sara Malakul Lane, American beauty queen Shandi Finnessey (below), Brent Huff, Roxana Ortega and Kerem Bursin all star. You can check out the synopsis and artwork below....

SyFy often brings us movies that have low budgets and are full of science fiction fantasy to make us laugh, smile, and even sometimes cry. During the Halloween season, we get a lot of horror flicks that deal with the supernatural and sometimes with outer space and other such sci-fi goodness. But those are low budget too.The SyFy low-budget original motion pictures though are what seem to be the best and most anticipated cheesy movies. With that I present to you...Sharktopus.Sharktopus Director: Declan O'BrienStarring: Eric Roberts, Ralph Garman, Sara Malakul Lane, Kerem Bursin, and...
