- Slipped into the coma in March 2007 after undergoing surgery to remove a cyst from his forearm, and never regained consciousness. In 2008, Springs's wife filed a medical malpractice suit, claiming that the two doctors who performed the surgery caused Springs to suffer brain damage.
- He played football at Lafayette High School in Williamsburg, Virginia with Lawrence Taylor.
- He played a year at Coffeyville Community College in Kansas. He spent three years as a standout player at Ohio State University under Coach Woody Hayes. He was elected co-captain in 1978. He was drafted to the Dallas Cowboys in the fifth round in 1979. He played eight pro seasons; six for the Cowboys and the last two for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
- After playing professional football, he coached Howard University in Washington D.C. under Steve Wilson and worked for the New York Giants under Coach Dan Reeves in the minority internship program.
- He is survived by his wife, Adriane Springs of Plano, Texas; his son, Shawn Springs; his two daughters, Ayra Springs and Ashley Springs; and at least two grandchildren.
- After kidney failure from type 2 diabetes, this led to the amputation of his right foot, two toes from his left foot, withered arms, and gnarled hands. He received a kidney transplant from Everson Walls in 2007, fell into a coma, and never regained consciousness until his death in 2011.
- Inducted into the Coffeyville Community College Lettermen's Hall of Fame in 1998.
