Paramount Pictures has acquired rights to the bestselling novel Nevermoor, with Michael Gracey attached to direct the musical adaptation. Gracey is creating original music for the film, with Drew Goddard adapting and producing alongside Sarah Esberg via their Goddard Textiles.

The original novel was penned by Jessica Townsend and tells the story of Morrigan Crow, a girl born on the unluckiest day and blamed for all local misfortune, from hailstorms to heart attacks. Morrigan’s curse dooms her to die on her next birthday. But in a narrow escape, she is spirited away by a man called Jupiter North to the magical city of Nevermoor. Morrigan has a chance to escape her fate and join the Wundrous Society, an elite group of remarkable people with remarkable talents — but only if she can triumph over hundreds of other children in a series of difficult, dangerous trials.

Exclusive: Despite a wave of rumors she might be headed for the executives suites of Paramount or Warner Bros, Emma Watts is staying put at Fox/Disney. Deadline hears that the vice chairman and head of production is in the middle of formalizing a plan with the studio to stay on in the future and continue to steer Fox’s film division. There was no comment or confirmation from Disney.

Sources familiar with what’s going on there tell me that while Watts had to give up the Marvel properties that include Deadpool to Kevin Feige, her decision to continue was certainly incentivized by continuing to oversee the Avatar sequels generated by James Cameron. CAA has brought on Dana Spector as an agent in the books department where she will focus on repping the motion picture, television, and theatrical rights, of authors, journalists, life rights holders, and other intellectual properties.

Prior her new post, Spector worked at Paradigm’s Media Rights department, specializing in adaptation deal for as Misty Copeland (Life In Motion), Drew Daywalt and Oliver Jeffers (The Day The Crayons Quit), Jessica Townsend (Nevermoor), and Andrew Smith (Grasshopper Jungle).

While at Paradigm, Spector, who began her entertainment career at UTA, worked to expand the film and television careers of emerging writers, including Brit Bennett, who is adapting her debut novel The Mothers with Kerry Washington’s Simpson Street and Warner Bros, and Thomas Pierce, who is adapting his short story Chairman Spaceman for Genre Films and Fox Searchlight.

Dora the Explorer: Michael Bay, Andrew Form and Brad Fuller will produce a big-screen, live-action version of Dora the Explorer. Based on the long-running, animated television series for children, the movie will follow Dora as a teenage girl who moves to San Diego. Nicholas Stoller (Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie, The Muppets) will work on the script. 20th Century Fox has tapped Drew Goddard (Cabin in the Woods) to write and produce their upcoming film Nevermoor: The Trials of Morrigan Crow, which is based on the upcoming Jessica Townsend Young Adult novel.

Deadline reports that the book, which is due out this Halloween was a popular title that sold at the Frankfurt Book Fair last year, with the middle-grade novel selling in 27 countries so far. Here is the plot synopsis:

After picking up the rights to the upcoming novel Nevermoor last year, 20th Century Fox is moving forward with the movie adaptation. The studio has brought on filmmaker Drew Goddard to write the screenplay adaptation for Nevermoor while also serving as a producer. The filmmaker does have a number of directing credits to his name, such as Cabin in the Woods, but there is no indication that he will be the director of this new adaptation.

The fantasy book, entitled Nevermoor: The Trials of Morrigan Crow, will be published on October 31, from Little, Brown Books for Young Readers, with the children's fantasy novel already selling translation rights in 27 countries.
